[Abandoned] Op Drug War(GRX touchup)

Postby Telvannia on Sat Jul 23, 2011 10:10 am

Finally got round to working on this. New legend, any thought, particularly about the use of the words overrunning the perforation in the paper.

As most people probably know im touching up the graphics on operation drug war. The conditions i have put on this touch up are:
    No style change
    No XML change
So no gameplay or style changes. Admittedly the second condition will be broken, one or two army circles will need slight adjustments to stay in their territories, but that should be it.

Full Draft
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/24801217/Operation_Drug_War_L_New.jpg

Army number test

Done
Changed the special army circles to make them look finish. I reckon this is now a fully finished draft i think. So i have posted it with the army numbers aswell

To Do
Still got to finish the small map, post it soon.
But mainly moving a few army numbers to make it fit better.

General thoughts on the graphics please?

Poll
Border styles:
A - pen effect on the photo More about the style rather than implementation
B - Adding borders in gimp
C - Borders added in the 3D program when making everything else

Image

So here is my first (almost (special army circles and names need properly doing)) complete draft. Major questions i want answering:
Im planning to keep the legend the same, any comments?
Do the borders from the top 2/3 or bottom 1/3 look better? (ignoring the errors on the top part, it is just style im looking at, and the bottom ones can be made more bright)
Do borders going under things (cars etc) ruin them? Will people still be able to understand them?
Of course any general graphical comments will be appreciated, please remember though, no gameplay or style changes.

Original Image for comparison etc.

For starters, you certainly need to make your icons brighter. Also, where are your territory names? As for the border style, I could go for either.

By icons do you mean the army circles for patrol etc? If so in my post i said they needed work, they are just copied from the old map currently.
And i have not got round to doing names yet, i will try to get that done soon so the map is actually a complete draft.

The background could look more like a manilla envelope/folder (is that what it's supposed to look like?)
If it's supposed to look like printout paper, it looks like you used clouds (though I'm no specialist!). Anyway, I'd suggest using a different texture for it. To me, it looks like it could be made into better paper :)

Also, for when you put the new icons, I think a neon glow around the edges would look amazing and match the lighting effects you have going on here! Good luck, I'm excited.

Yeah they need to be done properly, just thought i would show people a better idea what it looks like when it is finished

Yeah you got me, clouds. :P I was not planning to redo the legend, and since i dont have the original image anywhere i cant really redo the paper without completely restarting the map, which i dont think im a big fan of doing, but if enough people think it is a problem i can do it.

Any thoughts about a colour? I will try it although it might take away from the map behind, but i will give it a go with a slightly transparent white glow.

Yeah i was not too convinced it just worked with the annotated idea, it is not the best implemented idea.

I think if you re-worked A a bit to make the red show up more and whatnot, I think it could be cool. I kind of like the concept myself.

I went with C as IMO they look cleaner and crisper.

Telvannia, i went for B for same reasons as Isaiah40 posted above.
However, i think there is disparity in the three options because they don't show the same region with different treatments.

C, just clear and crisp.

B, looks jagged but might fit the overall look of the map.

A, NO!

Still got to be C then B with A being a distant third. And when I say distant, I mean you cannot see it even with the Hubble telescope. :P

B is the best of all. it's clear simple and clean.
C is too bulky and intrusive. i don't like it.
A has merit for being different but i'm not sure it would work. graphically it fits the best with the theme of the map but it might cause confusion.

Any reason for not liking any of them?

C was not aswell implemented when i did it for the second time, but nevermind at the moment people seem to prefer B, which is fine as it is the one i have done the most on. I did like the idea of A but i dont think it is easy enough to make it work.

So for now im going to go on with it with B and i can always edit it later if there is a massive swing one way soon.

I think the whole thing is too dark and some of the symbols and the name blend into the background of the map. It just hard to pick up with the eye. It all just looks the same. I don't know if you ment it that way but I just find it kind of frustrating.

It is meant to keep the same style, so that is not going to change. However the symbols are as they are just there at the moment as placeholders till i got round to finishing them off correctly.
(hopefully something i can get done this weeked)

Slight update. Pretty much a finished draft now, although im sure i have missed something that i needed to do...

Any comments? Nothing in particular i need comments on, it is now more just general comments. Also thought i would leave the poll up, but it seems pretty decisive.
