List of maps which I feel need revamping

Postby ManBungalow on Thu Apr 05, 2012 3:04 pm

Just as a point interest, really. I'm not suggesting some sort of contest (though - as a fan of the Discworld novels - I'd really like to see the Discworld map revamped), and I'm interested in your own opinions/lists.

Some maps can get away with being sort of...bland. These are the maps which probably wouldn't get past the graphics stage of the foundry process today, but I think are integrated into the site as classics, and subsequently will not be included in my list.

Other maps don't need a full revamp, but could do with some minor changes - EG. Age of Merchants because the font is often quite difficult to interpret. These maps won't be in the list either.

Furthermore, some maps just have poor gameplay and wouldn't benefit from a graphics revamp. Surprise, surprise, I won't be including them either.

(no disrespect intended to any of the artists who drew these maps, and remember that standards for maps on this site have changed over time)

Anyway, here we go:

  • Ancient Greece
  • Caribbean Islands
  • CCU
  • Discworld
  • Europe (could do with a change like Far East had because some borders are difficult to see)
  • Extreme Global Warming (a close call)
  • France 1789 (I guess this one has an old-timesy feel, but....eh)
  • Greater China (maybe)
  • Hong Kong
  • Madness (mainly because some borders are unclear)
  • Montreal
  • Tamriel
  • WWII Ardennes (this has some complicated bonuses to portray, however)

clandimonium should just be abolished... it is in the top 5 of completely utterly embarrassing to be apart of CC maps.

For what it's worth, in total agreement on Montreal and Hong Kong. Two great maps for gameplay whose graphics are just dated an don't fit into a greater theme. I'd put those two at the top of any list for a graphics revamp.

On the others, I either don't agree, don't play them or wouldn't make them a high priority.

Personally, now that we have Africa II, it's an afterthought for me. Same reason I wouldn't argue to revamp Europe... I play Europa instead.

Montreal and Hong Kong are distinct areas that play well but lack themes and have old/weak graphics. I think they could be greatly improved.

I agree with Gibbons about Africa & Europe. Europa is way better.

I think CCU is pretty decent for an early CC map. Its simple and plain, but unoffensive. Not everything has to be flashy.

Europe is fine imo i played it a lot and never found any trouble with the map.

i personally think haiti, indo china and portugal in addition to the other maps ManBungalow mentioned need a revamp.

Indochina would be a revamp of a revamp, then, and Portugal would be a revamp of a touch-up I think! Ha.

classic needs a revamp badly.
it's one of the blurriest maps i've ever seen.

Touching it up might be possible if you have specific concerns, but not much else would happen with the Classic! Too tough to do, and few rarely complain about it.

gimil started that revamp a while back but binned it as no one could agree on things. That is the problem with revamps, no one really likes the old version, but they seem to like it more than any new one.

Agreed on this... when the first North America revamp was tried awhile back, I remember I was part of the protest brigade.

That being said, I can't imagine people are wedded to maps like Hong Kong or Montreal. They just scream like they are 5-6 years old and from another era and not in a "quaint" way, either. They are great gameplay maps and I think revamps to make them look more attractive would greatly increase the amount of play on them.

Portugal, Caribbean, Ancient Greece, etc... I think reasonable people could disagree. And I know, in a sense, I'm only offering my own personal opinion here. But I'd bet you'd get near consensus for a revamp of either Hong Kong or Montreal if you put it to a sort of vote.

Aye, Hong Kong and Discworld definitely need a graphics upgrade. I'd put Tamriel on that list, too.

I disagree with WWII Ardennes completely. It is the perfect looking map.

Crossword is probably the ugliest. It should be redone with a '3D' feel to it maybe.

to me it isnt , it lacks any symbols of the region and it has grids type on it which i dont find appealing.

Also Ireland needs a serious revamp the map is tiny by CC standards and is just bland.
