[Forum] Like Button for posts.

Postby nietzsche on Sun May 06, 2012 2:52 pm

Add a "Like" button for comments, just like in facebook.

Specifics/Details:
  • Every post will have a "Like" button, just like the "Quote" button.
  • It would say something like "X,Y and Z like this." at the bottom of the post.

How this will benefit the site and/or other comments:
  • No need to type too much to express you agree

Here's how to do it.

This is not my code, somebody did it already re-using the code for a similar function and modifying a bit.

Everything is there.

If we do this then we need a "x thinks this post is shit" button also.

Like, "Army of GOD thinks this suggestion is shit"

I would Like this suggestion if I had a button.

I would also like an unlike button... Maybe a thumbs up, thumbs down option.

So we will have a "wall" AND a "like" button... Helloooooo Facebook.

Wouldn't be too bad though. Maybe I would stop seeing the crappy "+1" posts

I could agree for a thumbs up/down or +1/-1 for threads, but not for individual posts.

But threads already have it's thermometer, it's views and replies, individual post don't have one....

Even though I would never use it because it's a terrible suggestion, considering the code is already written and it has the opportunity to get rid of spam posts, this is a no-brainer.

exactly. those who dont like it can ignore it. maybe have an option in the CP where you can turn off seeing the likes/ +1-1 ratings, so that you can see it if you want.

It would reduce spam
the code is written
even people who dont like the idea want it implemented.

I don't really care for the suggestion. But if Vodean (above) is right and it is already coded for phpbb or whatever it is called, who cares? I don't really like it when someone quotes 4 paragraphs of text just to write "+1"

I'd much rather prefer a +1/-1 anonymous thing rather than a facebook style like button.

The problem with anonymous is that you can bring your clan to support you in one point, and other posters might feel intimidated when they see "8 persons like this". But if you see who are those persons, you won't be intimidated to disagree if you can deduct the reason for the liking.

Same with religious, and political topics, if there are a bunch who think the same, they will like someone's point if its anonymous, it's cheap.

In fact, if it was decided to be anonymous, I wouldn't like the suggestion, it'll be sometimes like you are arriving at a party, and you are put in the spot, the groups are already formed, and there's the girl you like, and she might be watching you, you rather don't do anything rash, because you might make a fool of yourself and the groups will reject you. (God damn it, I'm usually good with analogies....)

Already guarding against the Like Button abuse?

What have we become, CC? Do you really see this feature as being something more than a slight novelty? So what if someone brings a bunch of clan members to come like a post? What will that hurt/accomplish?

There are groups. You can't deny that.

Also, this is relevant for politics and religion discussions, yeah, I'm not too fond of them either but they are like 60% of Off Topics.

Two or Three months ago, the Off Topics community was given 1 entry for the Conquer Cup. We were to choose who was going to represent us, so we chose saxitoxin. But this other guy, I don't remember his name, who I had never seen before in Off Topics (after this I did look and he did some times posted in Off Topics), well he proposed himself, and told everyone in his clan to vote for him. He won. This is only an example of how groups can be used to influence what otherwise would be a fair open competition of wills.

Ok, I understand something like that happening. I'm saying, how would that apply at all to a Like button?

I don't like the anonymous "like." Make if public. Make it a substitute for posting "+1"

Oh and haha to posting +1 after my last comment

Ok, you can list the names if you want.

But I still want a +1/-1 option rather than just a like button. Then you could actually have some relevant stats about the quality of the post (or popularity anyway). Something reddit style would be awesome (without the reordering of course, just the score).
