Ah, so you've lived in the "city" where nothing bad happens except when your designer shoes lose a heel.

Checking paypal account balance....

Let's just say I never encountered a situation where a gun was necessary or even advisable. Of course someone can imagine all sorts of scenarios. If you're worried about your house getting broken into, which may be reasonable depending on your neighborhood, It would be more sensible to buy a better lock for your door.
As far as surviving while out and about I should think that your odds of harming yourself by slipping on the sidewalk are probably greater than your encountering a situation that required a gun but you don't walk around the city with a pillow tied around your bottom do you?

My cheeks are naturally cushiony. I've also fallen less (0 times) than been accosted (2 times).

I need to get my hands on one to play with. I suspect we need a "fire piston".

Probably a Sims Tactical solutions brand.

I can't find one locally but I'm thinking of trying to make one.

Here's a page with the pen flare on it and some good fire starting gear. http://www.mec.ca/Main/content_text.jsp ... search.y=0

The ones that are in an actual can typically have a pull tab to open them like a canof sardines. Can opener and some canned food might be a good idea for the cabin of sea container though. If you're setting up that sort of thing.

Don't forget to regularly check the expiration dates on those cans though, you don't want to be stranded and open it up to find just a pile of dust inside.

I'm thinking dust is not the worst thing to find when opening a expired canned food. You're right though, rotate your inventory, turn over your stock pile. If it's getting close, eat it or donate it before it expires then replace it.

If this is for a cabin, solar/wind generator would not need fuel.

If I had a place and a little spare coin I'd build a nice self sufficient little cabin. Currently we camp in my wife's luxury albeit smallish trailer.

http://www.kz-rv.com/sportsmen-classic/19BH.html perfect for us with two kids and a dog.

I have a cottage at the seashore but if sea levels rise it will be prone to flooding, so that's no good.

You might want to put it on stilts before you need to. The job will be tougher once the water's up.

Sell it and head to the hills is my plan, but the mosquitoes will be worse.

I rarely endorse products, so when I do you can be sure it's good.

I highly recommend one of these:

WaterBOB Bathtub Bladder

You're more likely going to need to (and want to) shelter-in-place than evacuate in 90% of all exigencies. This is the best $30 you'll ever spend.

Or you could buy some gladbags and fill em in your bathtub.
