I personally believe the internet itself, or rather the global internetwork that it has become, is here to stay, though the technology involved is sure to continue to evolve, as will the use it gets put to (take for instance how it went from the US defense agency's plaything to a field of porn)

nah, they're working on making it more affordable; gigabit networks very much exist already

Books were replaced by newspapers, newspapers by the radio, radio by television, and TV to some extent by the internet and social media. So the question I have is what looks like it'll be the next step in communication?

wait, we replaced books? damn, I'm behind the times...

honestly though, newspapers didn't replace books, they replaced town criers... books were originally for the rich until the advent of movable type

What I mean is if you want to spread a message/ idea quickly and effectively, whats the best method. You could circulate and newspaper or send out a broadcast a helluva lot quicker than writing a book about it. Books and letters used to be the best method to spread the word, as resources and technology were not at the level they are today; but in terms of spreading the word nowadays the time the it takes to write and book and get it published is so long that it is not as efficient as the others.

in this I guess I kinda agree, though again it was more a product of the advancement of printing technology than the form it was put to that made it easier (as newspapers were around in a form for about as long as books, but it wasn't until movable type presses that the current form of them took off in popularity). and yes, modern electronic technology is making paper forms less easy and viable as communications forms, but they still have their place
