WHAT EVERYBODY MAKE$

Postby Nobunaga on Mon Feb 04, 2013 7:02 am

A lot of talk here recently on women, jobs, money, etc... Found this interesting link on Drudge last week, thought I'd share:

http://washington.cbslocal.com/2013/01/ ... -salaries/

From the article:

Article wrote:A ‘Paycheck Fairness Act’ introduced in Congress last week would require employers to show pay disparity is related to job-performance and prohibit employer retaliation for sharing salary information with coworkers.

Anybody else take issue with this? A person's pay is their own and their company's private concern.

Article wrote:Senator Barbara A. Mikulski and Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, both Democrats, said their legislation is aimed at closing the pay gap between men and women and would also address loopholes in the 1963 Equal Pay Act.

I understand the motivation, but there has to a better way than broadcasting everybody's salaries to the working population.

Article wrote:Mikulski and DeLauro said the Paycheck Fairness Act would also allow women to seek punitive damages for pay discrimination

And I can already smell the unforeseen consequences. Hiring women at all becomes a risk, a legal risk.

I don't have the same problems with the law that you do. However, I suspect that if you look behind the motivation for the law, you will find the American Bar Association and the Association of American Trial Lawyers. I suspect it will be much easier to convince would-be plaintiffs to sue if these kinds of things were public knowledge within a company.

Recently came to the light that the PAN party in Mexico is paying close to 30million dollars to their candidate in the last presidential elections. PAN pays that because the government gives away our taxes to parties. It's nice to know.

I'd like to amend the law to enforce payment only in Sax bucks. And then I'd like to create a socialist u/dystopia.

Another "good intentions, bad outcomes" story. Already went over the reasons why with Haggis in that "pentagon, military women" thread--I think.

Also, I'm down for Andy's udystopia.

The first one is weird. But isn't the second one just not allowing companies to restrict people talking about their salary? Sure you prob don't need a law for it but I have no problem with it.

This proposed law is stupid. Get ready to not be allowed to negotiate for your salary, and get a shit wage.

Ooh, interesting take. I'm embarrassed I didn't think of this.

Companies could use this law to justify paying everyone the same or similar amounts. They could use the "We have to pay everyone the same otherwise we could be sued" defense. Damn you government! Always looking out for big companies!

say what you want about whether this law is "moral" or not... but how the hell is it even enforceable?

boss says "i pay this employee less because they aren't working hard enough"

how can you disprove that?

laws HAVE to be enforceable, otherwise you get all kinds of loopholes and shit

and most unenforceable laws are either highly invasive, or some kind of stupid moral crusade, or both

But doesn't a market work better with better information? Wouldn't reducing the information disparity be a good thing in respect to achieving a more efficient allocation of labour?

If such a plan was perfectly implemented, costless, and provided no further impetus for government intervention, then sure. I don't see how the benefits justify the costs here. Information is costly, and the current means for determining the various productivity of individuals are sufficient--e.g. the gender wage gap, when controlling relevant variables, has been closing between males and females. No state intervention is necessary.

For such information to be useful, they'd have to require all businesses (small and large) to report wages + benefits per worker within several categories: age, specific job, work experience, education, etc. This would be as close to perfect as I would find acceptable, but this would be a time-consuming process whose costs would be passed onto consumers. Again, benefits fail to offset the costs.
