In other news im playing Star Trek Online at the moment. I have little tolerance for MMOs these days (played WoW for years, finally came to my senses) but this is actually pretty fun. The way they have split the game into two different, but polished, segments is pretty cool.

Its F2P (and F2download) so if you are into that type of thing give it a shot (and look me up :))

I don't know if it's one that has been discounted or not, but I'll put in another plug for Recettear as being worth looking to see if it has been discounted.

What does it cost?

Does actual role-playing play into it much?

Woodruff (or anyone), are you into 4x games? I pretty much am a sucker for space based games, movies, science, etc. Via Steam's sale, I stumbled across Endless Space (2012 release) plus its new DLC that just came out a few weeks ago, for ~$12. It looks like a strategy game I could get into, so after watching some "Lets Play" youtube videos, I am hopping into it.

Here is a Part One of a Lets Play, showing a little about the game. The detail and variability and replay value looks pretty frickin' sweet.

The core game is free. You pay for optional extras on a microtransaction basis.

Not sure what you mean by your second question but like most MMOs (WoW, Eve, GW2 etc etc) you can RP to your hearts content. There is a pretty linear character progression with the usual specialisation options (do you want to shoot big lazors or do you want to drop awesome mines etc etc).

Most MMOs, in my view, don't handle role-playing much at all. That's my concern. For instance, in WoW, if you roleplay, you don't really advance.

Depends on your definition of role play.

But as with WoW, genuine roleplay (e.g. screaming over ventrilo saying "BEAM ME UP SCOTTY YOU FUCKING USELESS WHORE" as you get reamed by the borg) is purely optional.

There are pretty sweet inbuilt roleplay aspects such as you needing to manage your officers to ensure optimal running of your ship etc (i.e. you roleplay a captian of a starship).

Interesting...I've not seen this one before. I may have to look into it. From that video, it reminds me a lot of Masters of Orion (one of my favorite games, though it is quite old).

I wasn't a fan of endless space. I found it to seem too much like Armada 2625. For what it's worth.

I am playing Rogue Legacy right now. Meth style addiction. My kids are suffering.

Have you played Masters of Orion (or Moo 2), by chance? You fast-posted my edit where I mentioned I thought it sounded like that game.

I've not played Armada 2625.

I dearly love the well-made Rogue-like games (I actually still play the original Rogue from time to time). I briefly looked at the Wiki for this, but it didn't explain things very well...how does the whole "pass on to your kids at death" thing work?

It's nothing so cool as actually passing something on, but when you die (which you will over and over and over again), you will be offered the choice of three "kids". These kids will be random classes of ones you have unlocked, and will have random feats/perks/whatever you want to call them attached to them, up to two. Most of them are aesthetic, such as making the game 2d (you are flat so when you turn backwards it makes you or enemies look like a paper mario), some are bad, and some are good. Each kid will also be assigned a random spell that ranges from useless to awesome. Each time you die you can swap into new gear you have unlocked to customize your class a bit better, and also attach runes to the gear to give some added powerups. It looks cheesy, but is really super fun.

GOG.com is selling Master of Orion 1, 2, and 3 cheap right now.

Also for Steam, Xcom Enemy Unknown is 9.99, and well worth the buy if you like tactical squad base combat against aliens.

Yeah, I saw that. I think MOO 2 is the only good one of the three though, and I already have that one.

So is Endless Space along the lines of MOO, or is it significantly different?

Don't know, its a bit like Civ4 in my opinion, but the best of the Sid Meier Simulations had to of been the old Alpha Centauri (maybe it was the only one I could win at.....)

I too prefer Alpha Centauri. Of the Civs, I probably like #3 the best.

Rugby Challenge is a fun game. Even for people who don't know rugby at all (the tutorial is very good).

I find it hard to expand your army, your Empire, and your tech at the same time, and If you optimize lets say on expansion through settlers, you are likely to get taken over by said neighbors (CPU's) which magically manage to do all of it at the same time  Either that or I'm not playing the game right.... 8-[

Got the new NCAA 14, some new features in this one, like Ultimate Team and the spread option offense.

I've been playing FEZ, and boy, is it deep. If you really, really like puzzle games, FEZ is for you. It's sort of MYST-esque in the fact that there's not much conveyance on how to solve the puzzles: it's almost all inference and noticing clues that are, really, in plain sight once you see them. The 2D in a 3D world was fun to mess around with and the soundscape is amazing.

Discount on Steam for $5, I believe.

Also to add on, even if you edit your roster to be 99 across the board (highest you can go), the game will still punish you for either not reading the defense properly or letting a guy get open on offense when you're playing defense.

Though with Road to Glory, they added a feature (along with the whole Heisman thing) where you can play as a player already on a team's roster and go until their senior year. Still can't play as o-line or tight end (kicker and punter as well).

Oh, and they finally implemented it so really stron d-linemen can push o-linemen backwards. That's something the game had been lacking for a while.

FEZ is a nice game to dink around with a couple of minutes each day. I'm saving it for some airport play right now. Ha. After playing it though for a time, I got the point where I was playing another game and for a moment I tried to use the FEZ controls to turn the world map. Ha.

Anyone watch EVO over the weekend? The Melee tournament in particular was awesome, I think I'll be picking that up again. Also, prior to this weekend I had not ever seen of (let alone played) King of Fighters, but that game looks beautiful.

I like to play as the Scientists (I don't remember their formal name). That way, the tech thing sort of gets taken care of.

But yes...the CPU players definitely get some heavy advantages with the higher-end difficulty levels.
