Prologue: 7:27 AM
He ran with all the force he had. Never had he spent so much. Nobody knew if he knew where he was going. Unlike all the early morning joggers of the park, he was a man consumed. As he left Garfield Park and tore into Lawndale he tripped over something which sent him tumbling. He could feel his face smashed off the concrete but he went to get back up again. "Looks like you ran out of time chaperoo". Without thinking he started swinging his crowbar. He caught the assailant in the face - a mulatto man with enough lambchops to feed a family. As he ducked the next kick, he heard the sound he was waiting to hear. A revving engine and squealing tires told him before his eyes did that a salmon color Dodge Ram was taking the corner. Even though a punch to the face stunned him, he kept enough composure to get out of the way of a stream of bullets that was bound to follow.
His crew had rescued him again, yes. The problem this time is that the city had woken up. He didn't bother looking around for witnesses. He knew that game was a never-ending spiral. He quickly said: everyone hide, and then took off again, as if his life depended on it. It did.
Chapter 1: 9ish AM
The bloodiest day in Chicago's history? I knew before the call came that the call was coming. It was all over the news. The Superintendent was going to be giving a press conference at 10. Since all the victims were Asian, it figures they would call me - Matt Greenwood, 'Cago's "Brightest Star", at least when it came to the triads. Sure enough, it came. Before I knew it people were crammed in my office. Everybody was on their phone while brandishing papers. I guess it's a new fad that I am not aware of. I'm not sure when it became polite to visit someone else while on the phone, but at least they're not talking to me, making it easier to assess the situation.
At 8:30 AM there was a shooting in Jefferson Park. 2 seconds later another slaughter - Belmont. The airport L, Logan Square, Garfield Park, the West Loop and Union Station. 7 attacks within 45 seconds of each other. Every shooting had exactly 3 victims, and they all seemed to be Asians, except the people at the Airport. I have to admit, I had no idea what was going on here, and I needed some quiet. "Get the cunt out of my office unless you want to get off your piss-guzzling phones!" I yelled, perhaps a bit more harshly than I had intended.
Pretty soon I was in the car, driving to the WLRS. My bitch of a partner was in the seat beside me as I drove. As she looked through the papers, she said that there is actually a 4th victim in all the incidents but not with the rest, and not asian. Do you think these are innocent standerby? I was going to tell her that there is no such thing as innocence in the big city and that I don't believe in coincidence and that I still can't believe she lied to me and that I'm not sure if I want to rape or just kill her, but I stayed silent and nodded.
The traffic was totally backed up, the trains were down for the day. This was going to be messy. A friend called in a quick tip. There were other killings last night that followed a similar pattern. At around 3 AM there were killings in Lincoln Park and Edgewater. So I said to the bitch, "Let's split up, I'll go check out the north and you see what you can find down here." She agreed, but seemed surprised when I pulled over immediately and waited for her to get out. Is a mile walk really all that bad for her? I don't think so.
I immediately headed north and whipped out my phone. I had to call my regular sources and see what was happening here. Tony at the Prestige didn't know what was happening. Wong on 97th street laughed at me - can't you see they're not Chinese? The phone was cut off quickly. The radio started playing a blanket announcement - Chicago is now in a State of Emergency. Curfew starts immediately and all telecommunications will be monitored for the foreseeable future. The boys with the stars were going to solve the case and the press conference is now pushed to noon, to ensure adequate security. I think this is when I realized this might be bigger than me.
