Real or artificial christmas tree, and if you post, why?

Instead of buying a real or artificial tree, I should go outside next time and decorate the nearest Oak or Magnolia tree. Saves money, use cheap ornaments, the whole neighborhood would enjoy it or think I'm a bit crazy (night time operation would be better).

Christmas trees are non-pc. We put up a box and decorate it with stickers of Obama, and then circle 'round and bow until our spines break.

I have some friends that planted a silver fir in the yard, and they are decorating it every cristmas

I don't have much choice. There aren't too many artificial trees in the woods near where I usually spend Christmas.

Real, likely due to family traditions more than anything else. I enjoy going out and cutting down my own tree (on a tree farm, for those environmentally concerned individuals).

In the nordic countries we still call it jul and julgran (Yule in anglosaxon).
The decorating of the tree has many origins but none of them are actually christian.

The yule goat is more common than baby jesus in large parts of scandinavia. It is one of the goats that pulled the wagon of Thor as he flew across the skies - which of course is the origin for modern santa flying around with a sled.

Christmas is the christian adaptation of old pagan and roman celebrations of the midvinter solstice.
Sacrifying animals (and sometimes humans) was a part of the pre-christian celebrations, so that south park pic (or whatever it is) actually isn´t very far off..
Jesus was born during the summer.

I grew up with a fake one, and my girlfriend grew up with real ones. She prefers real, and I couldn't really give a shit. I suppose if we're doing the pagan thing, we may as well go all the way.

I always used to stick with a pretend one in the UK, but now we go for a eal one (bought it yesterday).
I think it's because so much of our traditional christmas faded away when we moved to the US. The kids don't get to see their grandparents, and they tend to get sent cash rather than having a pile of presents to unwrap. So the real tree makes it more Christmassy.

My dad was like Clark Griswold when it came to the tree (my mother wouldn't allow him to do anything other than a single 7-watt candle in each window for lights); always getting something too big for the house.

If I end up having kids, I think I'll end up doing the same thing, and make it a big adventure going to find the perfect tree at a tree farm as the kids groan and complain about my enthusiasm. Until then, I've got a little plastic thing.

Sure! Lay plastic sheeting on your floor and lay the Christmas tree on its side on top of the plastic sheet.

Now pull down your trousers and squat. The results will be original.

Take a picture and post here and we will give you a professional rating on your decorated Christmas tree.
