6th USAS Contest -- South Dakota

Postby Dukasaur on Sun Apr 08, 2018 10:02 pm

Part of the USA Supertournament event.

Several maps in the USA have not been decided. These are indicated in the original list by "TBA". These contests are being run to determine the best maps to represent states which have not already been decided.

This contest is the fifth in the series, and it is here to determine the map which best represents South Dakota

Suggestions and reasoning:

I'm going to invite players to vote for up to two (2) choices.

General Rules of the Contest
  • There can be no duplications. A map that is already assigned to another state cannot be used again.
  • Before a poll is put up, the thread will be open for at least a few days for people to add suggestions.
  • Anyone can make a suggestion, but please limit yourself to one suggestion.
If the list is short, I may accept a 2nd suggestion from people who have already made one.
  • Once the poll has been posted, no more suggestions will be accepted.
  • The poll will run for at least a week.
  • Once the poll closes, if any suggestion has a majority of the votes, it will be accepted.
  • If no suggestion has a majority, but the top suggestion has more votes than the 2nd and 3rd place suggestions combined, it will be accepted.
  • If neither of those is true, the top 3 suggestions will be referred to the Community Team for a final decision.
  • The person who made the winning suggestion will get a lovely Image GA medal.
  • If the winner was chosen by clear majority or by the "1>(2+3)" rule, then the winner will also get 1000 credits!
  • If the winner was chosen by a Community Team shortlist procedure, then the winner will get 400 credits and the authors of the other two suggestions on the shortlist will get 300 credits each.

Wasn't there one map with Mount Rushmore faces on it?

I think 4 Star Meats would be a good fit. South Dakota is ranked 8th in top producing states for cattle.

New World. SD Capital is Pierre, named after a French fur-trader from St Louis.

Unification Germany. Neighboring Bismarck, ND named after Otto von Bismarck, architect of German Unification.

Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills
South Dakota has several sites administered by the National Park Service. Two national parks have been established in South Dakota, both in the state's southwestern part. Wind Cave National Park, established in 1903 in the Black Hills, has an extensive cave network as well as a large herd of bison.[42] Badlands National Park was created in 1978.[43] The park features an eroded, brightly colored landscape surrounded by semi-arid grasslands.[44] Mount Rushmore National Memorial in the Black Hills was established in 1925. The sculpture of four U.S. Presidents was carved into the mountainside by sculptor Gutzon Borglum.[45]

Other areas managed by the National Park Service include Jewel Cave National Monument near Custer, the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site, which features a decommissioned nuclear missile silo and a separate missile control area several miles away, and the Missouri National Recreational River.[46] The Crazy Horse Memorial is a large mountainside sculpture near Mt. Rushmore being built with private funds.[47] The Mammoth Site near Hot Springs is another privately owned attraction in the Black Hills. A working paleontological dig, the site has one of the world's largest concentrations of mammoth remains.[48]

Nuclear missile silo :)

I like the 4 star meats idea. Furthermore Sitting Bull came from south Dakota.

Nevertheless, I want to propose Doodle Earth.
S.Dakota got the second tiniest capital in USA (Pierre), and as It should be the fastest tourney, It will recall Rapid city :-)

Or staying with a quick map, Ethiopia could be another quick solution and as it located in Africa horn, It could be just a reference to little big horn battle, where Sitting Bull lead the native army with Crazy Horse.

Was going to give you precedence on this suggestion, but in scouring the original thread I found this:
Subject: USA Supertournament [167 ON - 37 DONE - 4/20/18]

biscuit boy wrote:South Dakota can be 5 star meat. It is a top 10 cattle producing state.

Biscuit boy gets credit as the originator of this suggestion.

Should be one of the Scandanvian maps. There are Germans there, but that was slowing down

I like the 4 star meats. Little big horn is in Montana even though the battle was fought with SD, WY and MT Indians. 30 years ago I would have picked duck and Cover but most of their Nukes have been decommissioned since then.(At one point SD and ND had more nukes than the rest of the world). since they are so far north and relatively flat they could fire at Russia straight over the north pole at low altitudes. With that said "1982" may be a good map also. With the options 4 star meats is my choice since not only a leader in raising cattle but also in processing.

The winning suggestion (4-Star Meats) was brought forward by several people independently, but biscuit boy was the first and is awarded the prize by virtue of precedence.

Congratulations biscuit boy on your brilliant suggestion, your shiny new General Achievement medal, and your 400 credits!

=D>

Other prizes awarded are 300 credits to jfm10 for the 2nd place suggestion, Duck and Cover, and 300 credits to djelebert for the 3rd place suggestion, Doodle Earth.

Thank you all for participating and the many great suggestions!

The 7th USAS Contest (Vermont) will begin imminently!

On further investigation, I found that jmyork82 had also suggested this map in an internal discussion on June 22nd, 2017. Going to credit his as co-suggestor and award him the medal also.
