The Great Kantō Earthquake
100 years ago, on September 1st, 1923, the island of Honshu in Japan was devastated by the worst earthquake in that nation's history. The devastation from the estimated 7.9 magnitude earthquake was compounded by a firestorm, a tsunami, a typhoon, and civil strife culminating in the Kantō Massacre. Altogether the death toll from quake, the fires, the tsunami, the typhoon, and the violence, is estimated between 105,000 and 142,000 dead. Another two million were left homeless. Property damage is estimated at over $1 billion, or about $17 billion in today's terms. It was a greater disaster than the atomic bombs would be two decades later.
September 1st is nowadays marked in Japan as Disaster Prevention Day. Past disasters are remembered, and drills and educational activities are conducted to help prevent or control future disasters.
The map for this month's challenge will obviously be Japan.
There are two ways humankind gets through disasters. At the moment of the disaster, it is purely individual. One must survive, oneself, before anything else. After that, it becomes a community effort -- we must rescue and heal our families, then our neighbours, then the wider community, and all must begin to rebuild.
The settings for this month's challenge reflect that duality. First, you must survive, yourself, alone, in a multitude of others who are also trying to survive. This will be reflected by 12-player Standard games. Zombie spoils will represent the dazed and confused people in the immediate aftermath of the disaster. Second, you must help friends and neighbours. This will be reflected by Doubles games, where you must partner with another.
The larger contribution to score will be the number of Doubles victories -- the number of things you accomplish to help your community. You must win AT LEAST ONE game in the solo category, but there is relatively little reward for winning more than one. (In role-playing terms, once you have proven your ability to survive, there is little advantage to proving it multiple times. You only have one life. It's the lives of others of which you can help a large number.)
