[Tutorial] Terraforming Video

Postby mibi on Mon Jun 25, 2007 9:08 pm

Here is a youtube video of how i made the following island in a similar style to the Trojan War map.

unfortunately the original screen capture was 1GB so I had to speed it up x4 and cut the quality down big time to get something on the net. I used windows movie maker which blows. If anyone knows how to compress avi's let me know.

Image

I used photoshop and the standard brushes. sorry you cant get any details out of this but the process might be interesting. I will try to get some better videos in the future.

well if you have any questions let me know. I mostly used variations on the paint brush. the mountain was dodge and burn.

Damn… I should say, however, that my photoshop skills are much better. I've managed to slightly understand BOTH paint brush and text.

*gets a smug look on my face*

i don't use photoshop so i didn't understand much of the process :(

the quality is so poor i can't understand many of the tools used :(

could you perhaps do something with text and images?

like this:

How to make your very own old map.

step 1. find a piece of white paper. crumple it into a ball then neatly unfold it. place it under a big book for a few minutes. in this time prepare a cup of coffee.
step 2. spill the coffee onto the sheet of paper and let it soak for a bit.
step 3. put it in the oven until the paper is dry and the margins start to turn brownish. now you have your very own olp paper.
step 4. take a high quality pic of it and put it on your pc.

you got this image:
Image

now you decide the paper should appear even more realistic.
edges and burn are your friends.

so start fireworks and open your image.
Image

then click on burn tool and modify the various properties for this tool. go for midtones with a decent exposure and lots of edge for a smooth look.

Image

now with a single move go around the edges of the map and burn it.
or go over the whole map. it's up to you to choose the style you want.
and you'll get a nice burnt paper.

Image

now all you need is some torn edges.

select the image and click on the little plus sign at the bottom then go to edges
Image

perfect. now select the tearing more you want. i recommend torn paper and modify the parameters until the image preview looks ok.

in the end you'll get this:

nicely done Mibi. I could follow a lot of that - but I didn't know you used freehand paint brushes for most of your maps. They look great though. A better quality movie @ maybe 2x speed is just what this site needs. You certainly do rule :D

Wow. I have PhotoShop CS2, but I've never used it, maybe I'll dust it off and give it a try...

The owners of CC should pay you to run a series of YouTube Tutorials.

after looking at the tutorial i've decided to toy around and see if i can do something similar in fireworks 8.

i never realized how easy it is. basically i used just the brush, the polygon lasso, the eraser and dodge. for effects i used some bevel and some shadow.
quite simple. i had no idea it was possible. unfortunately i just realized the limitation of fireworks when it came to making the mountain. fireworks does not have the set of brushes you find in photoshop. :(

valuable things i learned:

1. houses. very nice houses made with the polygon lasso and filling them with colour. add some shadow and inner bevel.
2. paths. the dodge tool works miracles. different shades to make the paths more worn on some places.
3. waves. again the dodge tool used for shadow or midtones did wonders.

things i'm not satisfied with:

1. the trees. i have no idea how mibi did them because the video is of poor quality but i suspect he used a brush or something. i had to add them tree by tree and it was soooooo boring.
2. river. gotta work on this one. i'm not satisfied with the river banks.

That was pretty fun to watch, Mibi. Perhaps videos are something to look into later in the future.
