does it look like this could have decent playability with more impassables and some territory splits?

Nordic map (an icecream candy-coloured rough draft)

Postby snufkin on Mon Aug 13, 2007 5:18 pm

I´ve tried a couple of Nordic/scandinavian drafts before but almost no one was interested in my swedish empire map so I abandoned it quickly.
(why bother if not even swedes want one? )
The other one is a viking map but it would have to be twice the size limit to work.

I will try a contemporary Nordic map while we wait for Lufsen (don´t know if he´s going to include all the nordic countries?)

It´s not very detailed but I´ve set it up so every pixel can be changed easily.
The colours are mostly for development and yes, there are plenty of errors that I know about. Dont wanna hurry and spend a lot of work in vain.. in case something really beatiful surfaces in a month or so..

comments on playability would be good (there are a lot more impassables and territory splits possible..)

and yes I tilted the canvas 25 degrees east to make it less "top-down".
This can also be fixed of course together with further cropping to allow more detail.

draft for a small version:

The map shows good potential and it's nice to see you've not gone overboard with the size. Is there any reason you made it 630px wide though? There's quite a bit of wasted space on the sides of the map. Not sure if you're planning to fill this in with other details at a later date though.

As for the colours, draft or not, I think they're rather pleasant.

You might have to drop/merge some of the territories, some like Copenhagen/Sjaelland are a bit cramped.

yeah, the region of hovedstaden/copenhagen is a problem.. might use some older local danish borders. These are the new ones from this 2007.
..should be able to makethe "Copenhagen" territory larger by adding Roskilde but there are other alternative solutions as well.

I´m thinking about cropping it more to get rid of the dead space, but at the same time some background national landmarks could be nice.
Definitely the "northern cross" national flags (all based on the danish dannebrogen - the oldest national flag in the world).

Looks like this map may have decent playability once sea routes and more impassables are added.

Also, judging from this map, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Map_Norway_political-geo.png You could name West Norway 'Vestlandet' and East Norway 'Østlandet'

The problem with Østlandet is that I suspect the xml doesn´t support norwegian or any scandinavian characters?
but that´s just what I assume, I may be wrong..

Ostlandet would mean "land of cheese" in norwegian

iceland

is Iceland going to be part of the map or no? i'm confused because you display it but show no divisions and it doesn't show up on the list of countries.

Yes, Iceland is in the next update.
Four territories: nordvestur, nordaustur, sudur and a slightly enlarged Reykjavik area.

this rough draft has certainly peeked my interest levels, adn kudos to a very good looking rough draft. really helps the starting of maps.

but some issues i want to ask is how u ar going to put army circles on those island terrs? and u need a lot more impassable borders in the finland region. 3 bonuses withouth impassables is just asking to become a bloody war zone

A solution to the Copenhagen problem would be to drop the political divisions for Denmark and then go with more geographical names: Sjaelland, Fyn, Sonderjylland, Midtjylland, Nordjylland (or just Jylland) and Bornholm.

Looks good, tough a map maker needs to be able/willing to sacrifice all there time working on it, not just posting it and forget about it until a week or so later. This map has a lot of potential, please keep working on it.
