The official language of the United States and the language of commerce are English. It is entirely possible to celebrate the wonderful unity our nation engenders under a flag that proudly waves above anyone who wishes to be a part of her, without enabling those unwilling to learn a common tongue.
It is blatantly idiotic to assume that people wish to celebrate their mother tongue are "unwilling to learn a common tongue." It makes perfect sense to me that someone would participate in the common culture of the place they live in on a routine Monday-to-Friday basis, and still celebrate their original culture on the weekends, on holidays, feast days, family anniversaries or other special occasions. Your fears of subversion are unwarranted. A man who wears lederhosen to an Oktoberfest party will still be back in the office on Monday morning with his boring blue suit.

"According to wikipedia," there's no federal law making English the official language; 29 states have state laws making English their official state language, 3 states recognize two languages (Hawaii [English and Hawaiian], New Mexico [English and Spanish since 1912], and Louisiana [English and French]), and 18 states have no official language. The territories have separate official languages, Puerto Rico (Spanish), Guam (Chamarro), Northern Mariana (Chamarro), and Samoa (Samoan).

This -
http://www.narf.org/pubs/edu/pink.pdf - says 12 states grant "special status" to various Native American languages.
According to the National Park Service -
http://www.nps.gov/mava/index.htm - Martin Van Buren's family exclusively spoke Dutch in the White House on weekends and after 5PM.

It makes one wonder why they left their native lands if they do not want to be a part of the land they immigrated to? It really is the apex of conceit.
Mmm..just as the first European immigrants(uninvited) to the Americas assimilated to the existing conditions/culture/language they found,or maybe they were at the apex orf conceit?

Right. Assimilation isn't the only goal when people travel abroad for better social and economic opportunities.
People, who insist that cultural assimilation is a necessary goal which should be imposed by the state, are acting like a bunch of thugs. State socialists, fascists, and the KKK use similar reasoning. This disqualifies those adherents from being libertarian or even liberal--in the true sense of the word.

And for that comment, you've been bumped up from #87 to #3 on my Assimilation List.

Yeah... right. Like there were clocks in 1788.

Sweet thread and good topic, but I want to go ahead and take the next step. So if it is bigoted just to call someone a pro-lifer or to be pro-life, what is it when a governor of a state tells you you are no longer welcome there, and that you have no place there?
Is this your fiscal policy coming up again?

Yes, that's all he talks about is fiscal policy.
Almost done trolling?

Ready to admit that you lied and you do care about stuff other than fiscal policy?
