The only thing we do know is that it was a long time ago and he played for the Red Sox, which is why I thought it was Williams
Is it Ty Cobb?

All right.
New question:
Name two baseball players who won MVPs while playing for a last place team.

Alex Rodriguez and... Steve Carlton?

Yes to A-Rod, but Carlton never won an MVP.

Frank Thomas?

No to the aforementioned.... however, I fucked this up a bit. The other person that I know of that won an MVP on a last-place team actually did so on a team that finished second-to-last... so, yeah, I mildly fucked this one up. But I'll make it better with a clue: the team this gentleman played for is in the AL East.

Carlos Delgado w/ the Jays?

Neither.
Okay, another hint: the year the other bloke won the MVP (for the second-to-last place team) was 1991.

Now I feel stupid (at least I was on the right team)
Cal Ripkin Jr.

by Incandenza
Yep, Ripken it is... the overall question came from a debate I had with a buddy over whether Cecil "Heavy C" Fielder won the MVP that year he hit 84 million homers for the Tigers, which devolved into the whole 'who played for the worst team yet still won an MVP' debate... beers may or may not have been involved...
Even tho spurg got A-Rod, I'll pass this off to Cheese, who got the arguably more difficult of the two.

This one may be easy
In 1998 an American League team switched to the National League, who was that team?

Milwaukee Brewers
Pretty positive on that
