I can't believe the school lunches either...we live in an excellent area and the schools are awesome but the food isnt edible...amazing. I've packed my kids' lunches for 12 years now

High schools have machines with pop for sale (here anyway)...grade schools only offer milk and juice....jr / middle schools, some have pop machines, some don't.

Pisses me off is that everything (grade schools) is outsourced (much like our country)....they still have the fancy kitchen in the cafeteria but it sits unused while they pay extra to have crap lunches carted in from gods know where. And our city was just voted in the top ten for liveability for families....cant imagine how bad the schools are for the rest of you pilgrims

Well it's not her direct fault ... the problem is that any uniform standard of cuisine is going to suck. It seriously takes a massive effort to make good food on a global scale with test kitchens and focus groups. This is especially true when you get to children of different age groups. Unless you have parents who are constantly bashing their children on the culinary heads, they are going to be the most nit picking people you have ever seen.

Seriously, my cousin would never permit spaghetti sauce on her spaghetti ... it had to be on the side.

The standards were horrible in a number of ways. They weren't even considering the average tastes of children. They weren't considering the diverse nutritional needs of children either, especially as there is a vast difference in the caloric intake of the nerd and the athlete. It was just all around bad.

Mind you, I don't think you would want me to be around a school cafeteria. I'd be the WIlly Wanka of healthy food. I mean tabbouleh ....

Sounds to me like the anger/backlash is misguided.

The problem is awarding the food contracts to the lowest bidder, as well as squeezing the cafeteria budget. I am unsure how this is Obama's fault. I assume she is just trying to ensure the food that is served is healthier than it has been in the past.

I think it was mac who posted that link about Japanese school dinners on here a while ago, which said that they give kids veg, rice, fish, soup etc. for about $3 a meal.

Don't give those fat little shits a choice. Design cheap, healthy meals and tell them they either eat those or go hungry.

It's asshole parents who feed their kids Hostess Twinkies three times a day that cause these problems. Given a choice between a Hostess Twinkie and a cucumber slice, of course the kid will choose the sugar coma. If he was capable of self-restraint he'd be an adult. Eliminating the Twinkies from the school is too late. By the time the kid gets to school, he's already learned all the wrong lessons. He'll gladly starve all day rather than eat something healthy, and then he'll rush home to his bloated pig mother and her Giant Economy Costco Warehouse Size box of Hostess Twinkies. Eating healthy is a habit that needs to begin with your very first solids, and it's difficult to turn back once you're on the wrong road.
