Anyone a doctor (...or had a kidney infection before)?

Just wondering if it's possible to have a kidney infection and not feel sick at all? I have pain in my lower right back in the kidney area. Of course I have no time or desire to go to the doctor unless I really really really have to. How can I tell if it's soft tissue or something else?

I love internet diagnoses!

Are you peeing blood?

Does it hurt when you DO pee?

Are you going to the restroom more often than usual?

Then it is not a kidney infection...

Maybe it's just PMS...? 8)

Well, on a more serious note, it could be you just strained a muscle or tendon and need to take it easy for awhile. I had similar problems a while back.

Thank you Dr. Ank. The symptom checkers I read didn't make it seem that you had to be peeing blood, hence my question. I have something big coming up next week and don't want to be sidelined for that, but also hate doing to the doctor...lol. The back pain didn't seem muscular and was waking me up at night.

I think I know the symptoms of PMS pretty well by now!

Cranberry juice, helps if there's an infection, harmless to healthy if there isn't. Be prepared to urinate, mild dieretic.

Cranberries are for bladder infections I thought?

Kindneys are ahead of the bladder in that chain, but yes also for bladder.

Verdict: Congested bowel syndrome

Your body has tried channeling it out of your mouth for too long.

Cure: sex

Wicked, I'm not a doctor, just a herbalist, but I have had about 6 kidney infections in my lifetime, all within a 2 year period.

Contrary to many of the kidney infection 'check lists' you will find, bloody urine does NOT have to be present, nor does painful urination. Symptoms will vary from person to person.

Mine always started with pain in the kidney area of my back for a few days before I started to get sick. From there it graduated to fever and pain so severe I could barely walk.

Once I grew familiar with the initial warning signs that another kidney infection was starting up, I began my herbal treatments to help clear them up before they led me to another hospital visit and strong rounds of antibiotics. Its been a while, but I think I used a combination of Uva Ursi leaf, Marshmallow root, Pipsissewa leaf, Buchu leaf and Pau D'Arco bark.

However, if a patient ever came to me with a suspected kidney infection, I would send them to a doctor right away. They are serious, and can cause permanent kidney damage if left untreated, or if they are treated too late.

What sort of pain are you having? Dull ache? Stabbing? Shooting? Constant? Intermittent?

Does the pain lessen or increase with particular movements or positions?

Have you applied any treatments to rule out muscular or nerve problems such as cold, heat or rubs?

Have you ever had an injury in that area? Or other back problems related to bad vertebral alignment?

Is there any discoloration or swelling in the area?

Is it painful to touch?

In any case, I strongly urge you to either see your doctor, or go to a walk in clinic, just to be sure. A simple urine test will determine whether you have an infection or not. If not, you may wish to request an ultrasound to check for kidney stones.
