The brawling began during a procession of Armenian clergymen commemorating the 4th-century discovery of the cross believed to have been used to crucify Jesus.
The Greeks objected to the march without one of their monks present, fearing that otherwise, the procession would subvert their own claim to the Edicule — the ancient structure built on what is believed to be the tomb of Jesus — and give the Armenians a claim to the site.
The Armenians refused, and when they tried to march the Greek Orthodox monks blocked their way, sparking the brawl.
I'm not mocking you guys, I found this to be pretty shocking myself. They were pretty much argueing over material things. Unless there was some "I'm proving I love baby Jesus more" thing behind it.

There definitely is more to it, but that does not mean their actions were appropriate.

I feel that way too. There must be some history... probably of argueing over the Edicule, but I don't want to speculate too much.

It's odd, y'know - I didn't see anybody turn the other cheek. That woulda shown who was really a Christian.
Can't see what they're arguing about reallly - I mean, isn't it all right there in the divinely-inspired bible?

Google The historic divisions of the Jurusalem church and such and you will probably get some better information, but if I understand it correctly, the churches have to retain possession of certain areas and artifacts to retain their position. These churches, once very powerful are now bare footnotes for many Christians (if even that). So, if they lose this ... they basically lose all.

Am I the only one who sees the humor/irony in this statement?
I don't expect anyone else to think as I do. You apparently do (based on the "God" thread posting)... that makes you a lot less tolerant.

Of course it's a silly statement - but I can see where it's coming from.

Religious followers with a "holier than thou" attitude spilling into violent confrontations about who's holier than the other? Well this is the first time!

Don't the Greeks and the Armenians have bad blood going back generations?
I thought they were kind of like the French and English. They hate each other (and regularly fart in each others' general direction) but are nominally "at peace".

On the contrary, Greeks and Armenians have very good relations. That's because they share the same hatred towards Turks. The only problem is in Jerusalem. The patriarchate of Jerusalem is the richest one and that's why there are clashes there. I remember a few years ago that the previous patriarch was disposed after some economic scandals came to light.
