Issue #07:

Hello all and welcome to the seventh issue of the Conquer Club Newsletter!
Another fun-filled 2 weeks here on CC with some great moments and some sad moments. Firstly i would like to say farewell to [player]oaktown[/player] who took off his blue moderating cap last week, it certainly won't be the same seeing you with no colour in your name. At least oaktown will be hanging around the Map Foundry and Conquer Club, contributing the way he does best.
[player]Fruitcake[/player] is also taking a few weeks off the News Team to focus on some real life stuff, but he will be returning in a few issues time. In the meantime we have a new section to fill the fruitcake void, called "Guest Editorial". We will be running this for the next few issues in Fruitcake's absence, and will be asking a member of the community to volunteer to write about what CC means to them. This week we asked [player]Minister Masket[/player] to write an article on what CC means to him, what he likes/dislikes and a few other bits and pieces. If you would like to volunteer to write a Guest Editorial to appear in one of the next few issues, Please PM your interest to [player]samuelc812[/player].
We also sat down with [player]AndyDufresne[/player] for a chat in our Mod-Interview series. We hope you enjoy reading this issue!

Hello again, my fellow conquerors. A lone map was quenched this time, but our beloved (ex-) CA oaktown has left the building with his official role, although he will be staying on board as a FA (Foundry Assistant).

Foundry Stamp Competition
The competition is now in the voting stage, and your votes are wanted and greatly appreciated! Visit the thread with the entries by clicking the subtitle or visiting the CC homepage and viewing the announcements.
Stepping Down … (& Staffing Changes)
The longtime CA, [player]oaktown[/player], has officially stepped down from his moderator position and is now one of the regulars … well, to an extent. That brings us to our Foundry Staffing Changes: with the departure of oaktown, the CA position is filled by some non-moderator Foundry Assistants — [player]oaktown[/player], [player]wcaclimbing[/player], [player]thenobodies80[/player], [player]Incandenza[/player], [player]TaCktiX[/player], and myself, [player]the.killing.44[/player]. We will be helping out in our respective positions (see the Foundry Staff thread by clicking on this subtopic title) and lending the CA's a hand, whether it be by stamping or alerting the mods about things that need to be done. So, we bid farewell to oaktown and tip our caps to the Foundry Assistants
AUTHOR'S NOTE

The last few weeks have seen a few clans fade away and several new ones rise up. Both The Untouchables and Marvel/DC Heroes have now closed down. The Untouchables was a clan that was formed from the Knights of the Empire split, which also saw the creation of Legion of the Damned at the time, in 2007. Marvel, while having one of the best themes, lost momentum when the original founding leader left to join another clan.
Many of the Marvel/DC players have moved on to help form The Dark Knights of Chaos. Another clan (still forming) starting to gain momentum is The Spartans. Their leader has been running tournaments and appears quite organized, which is a great skill to have in managing clans and clan challenges.
With several clans folding, I reached out to a player who was part of both The Untouchables, and Knights of the Empire, the 2 most well-known clans to fold, [player]hulmey[/player].
What happened with KOE?
In my time here on CC, I have seen clans fold primarily due to 3 reasons being:
As always, you can find Clans who are recruiting here and you can see a list of all the clans and usergroups here.

“Flaming is a hostile and insulting interaction between Internet users.”
As of April 1st, 2009, Conquer Club no longer has a Flame Wars forum. Along with a few other changes made to the site that day, most figured it would be returned along with the original colors of the website, usernames and the dice. A few days after Conquer Club returned to it’s original demeanor, there was still a lack of a certain forum that had not slipped the eye of quite a few forum-goers.
The Community did not go without being heard on this issue. Many topics sprouted about the GD forum about the loss and they shared their opinions in this topic viewtopic.php?f=6&t=82963 among many others, including quite a few that were soon locked for flaming, ironically. Half of the voters were pleased with the removal of Flame Wars and did not have a problem with it being gone. A third of the voters wholeheartedly wanted and “needed” Flame Wars back and thought the people running Conquer Club fell and hit their heads, woke up and decided a war site was not the place for being mean to others. A few voters wanted Flame Wars back just so the people would strop griping about it being gone, and the rest said now that the forum was gone, they really didn’t see a need for it to come back.
“Much like a roll of the dice, life isn't always fair,” says [player]oVo[/player], as the discussion about the missing forum heated up within the thread. Visitors of the thread included [player]Robinette[/player], [player]KLOBBER[/player] and [player]owenshooter[/player] all giving their unique opinions on the matter. A few were more blunt than others when giving their outlook: “Flame Wars is dead, just let it go,” [player]BaldAdonis[/player] declared.
The official word came out from [player]Hyasri[/player], the Community Manager, on April 6 which you can read about in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=82967. So even though some people gave very good arguments on why Flame Wars should be returned, such as [player]Whitestazn88[/player] when he mentioned “I'd like to see flame wars come back so that people who do need to vent in an obscene way can do so without ruining my forum experience,” in the end the administrators put their foots down on the subject. To quote [player]Hyasri[/player], “It was becoming more clear that the flames were spilling out of that forum.” It seemed like the admins were just trying to look out for the site as a whole and wanted a better atmosphere in the forums. Assuring us that this decision was not made rashly but was given a lot of time and thought, the community has been dealing with their loss since (some better than others).
In closing, Flame Wars was a part of the site than many users enjoyed and some will miss. To those who wished Flame Wars was still around, I’m sure you can agree with [player]TheProwler[/player] as he poignantly yet briskly says “I miss Flame Wars.”

Thanks to everyone who put in their opinions, and if you ever have a suggestion for a Community Opinion piece, feel free to PM me any ideas!

The Strategy Guide Ad-Hoc Group
Hi folks, I’m [player]Nagerous[/player]! You may have seen me in the past trolling the forums and providing nonsensical comments sometimes irrelevant to the thread the statement is made in. However, I am not here today to talk jibberish but instead I am going to be discussing one important element of the Conquer Club community that not everybody knows about, and that is the Strategy Ad-Hoc Group. Currently, the Strategy Ad-Hoc Group is working on producing detailed strategy guides for every map and setting as well as guides on spoils and reinforcements. As everyone knows, there are a huge amount of maps now available for live play and therefore the job that the strategy group have given themselves is enormous. However thanks to the good work and leadership from [player]Gilligan[/player], [player]gimil[/player]and [player]The Fuzzy Pengui[/player] as well as a number of active members the list of maps is slowly being worked through. Guides have already been completed on a number of maps such as Arctic and the Caribbean Islands and there are many others that have been written and are near to being finalised. However, the Strategy Ad-Hoc Group needs your help! As mentioned earlier the task that the team are setting themselves is huge, but the more people we have helping, the quicker the guides can be churned out. More users giving more feedback would also be welcomed. If the concept of writing guides for your favourite map has attracted you, please feel welcome to join the group either by following this link --> The Strategy Guides Ad-Hoc Group and saying you want to join there, or by dropping [player]The Fuzzy Pengui[/player], [player]gimil[/player] or [player]Gilligan[/player] a PM. With your help, you can make Conquer Club a better place, by writing detailed guides to help new or inexperienced players, or if writing is not your thing, just joining the group to give those writing guides some feedback. There is also the possibility of incentives in the form of free months of premium memberships for individuals who work especially hard with the group over a long period of time, provided generously by [player]gimil[/player]. So if you are motivated by greed or just want to help/better the community, please apply.
Thank-you.

[spoiler=Interview with AndyDufresne]Q: Hey Andy
A: Ahoy Ahoy!
Q: How does it feel being the longest standing Admin besides the site owner?
A: Good.
It's been an interesting ride, and I like that I've seen the site grow, change, and adapt. I've seen many people come and go in the forums---and have been involved with a lot of the ancient history of Conquer Club! I kind of feel like the man behind the man who's been in the company for ages but doesn't plan on taking over, but who still likes to play marionette from time to time.
Q: How did you slip into the role of Foundry Foreman?
A: A few of the older people in the Foundry have heard me tell this tale before, but for everyone it goes a little something like this:
Back when I first wandered into CC, I went straight to the Map Foundry. It seemed like an interesting place to hang out---and it was! But there was zero coordination, because at the time, it was just Lack and Twill, and neither were very much involved in the process of Cartography. I remember one of Lack's only comments on one of the earlier maps was that it needed a small map. Basically, anyone could create a map (in paint, remember the old Middle East map?), and could have it open to feedback or 5 days, update it once, and then send it to Lack and he'd upload it. Anyways, the total lack of focus and oversight was crying out for someone to step up and take the job.
The particular moment that really did it for me was Freakshow's original Indochina map. He wasn't too keen on taking feedback from other users, which is the heart of the Foundry Process as I see it, and one day just sent his map off to Lackattack while there were still concerns that users wanted addressed. I remember PMing Lack and explaining that some oversight or something was needed. Within a short time after that I was asked to Volunteer first as Foundry Mod (which I termed Foundry Foreman) and Suggestions and Bug Reports Mod. Voila!
I had lots of crazy initial ideas for the Foundry and it's workings and mechanics, but I won't go into those.
Q: When you joined Team CC were you automatically made an Admin? Or were you promoted at a later stage?
A: Nope, as I mentioned in the last question, I was first just a Mod for the Foundry and Suggestions and Bug Reports. At the time, it was just Lack, Twill, and Myself, and then we added some additional users, eventually creating the Mod Squad. Only later did I get promoted to Admin status (and for a brief stint I was Community Manager, and a horrible one at that!), after juggling a number of things like E-tickets (and E-mail before we even had E-tickets!), Multi Hunting, and Global Modding.
Q: Who was already on Team CC when you jumped onboard?
A: I seem to be answering these questions in my earlier answers! Maybe I should read ahead! Anyways, just Lack and Twill were currently "Team CC" when I joined. Then we brought aboard Moz976, Wicked, Scarus (whom few remember), etc. Highborn also was brought on a Tournament Director soon after, and MrDexter was initially someone helping us with Chat. And then of course, a bunch more people followed!
Q: What is it about your position on Team CC that keeps you moderating the site?
A: Good question. The Foundry certainly keeps me around as a user. But the work I do as an Admin gives me the feeling I get after eating bananas, which is only a good thing. I like to think that I'm helping create a better site (mostly, of course
), and I like being apart of the overall idea of Conquer Club. Oh, and I enjoyed being "in charge of the website" when Lack and Twill would decide to take vacations at the same time.
Q: Are you happy with your name being red? If not what colour would you prefer?
A: I always thought Bold and Black would be cool, especially for Admins. But Red is still a nice default choice.
Q: Anything secretive planned for Conquer Club in 2009?
A: We always have things planned---we just have to execute those plans now!
Q: If you were to join a Competitve Clan, to which one would you apply?
A: Hrm, I was never much involved with Clans on CC, so I really have no idea. Hrm, whichever Clan likes Standard World Domination maps mostly, and likes mostly the "Classic" settings.
Q: Besides Cartography and the Administration of the site, which aspect of the site interests you the most?
A: I think the people in general? Lots of interesting characters, and I know in my time I've seen many come (and go, of course!). I've got a lot of respect for most of the people on CC---even the fun troublemakers, since I realize that Conquer Club operates in, hrm, an alternate reality.
But one of the things that use to interest me alot were Mafia Games. I loved writing and creating elaborate Mafia Games for people to play in. Perhaps one of these days I'll get one going again---I still have half of one that I wrote a couple of years ago that I could finish. I like the story and the idea behind it...so who knows?
Q: If you had to choose your closest friend on Conquer Club... Who would it be?
A: Hrm, probably the people I've known the longest: Lack and Twill. And of course, King Achilles, since I work with him so frequently also. That man has a lot of humor that some people may not know about. But also the good old C.A.'s, past and current, I've always especially enjoyed since I've worked the most with them---and they share my similar passion for Cartography. And of course, many of the early and current Foundry bunch, since I see them quite often.
Q: Favourite Mod/Admin?
A: Myself. It's always good to appreciate yourself, no? Bananas.
Q: Has anything on CC ever made you put down your banana's and go "WOW"?
A: In a good way or bad way? In a good way...hrm. Again, some of the old Mafia games did that...and, hrm, some of the awesome updates and events we've had also.
In a bad way...hrm. Hm, yes. Now that I think of it, some of the first multis we had, and the first real trollish multis that people never knew about---since they conducted their trolling through e-mail and e-tickets. In addition to that---I remember chuckling at a user who created nearly two dozen multis to fill up a tournament he was running. Almost felt bad for the poor fella. Almost. Bananas.
Q: How many past or present members of Team CC were suggested by you?
A: All of the C.A.'s (though as time went on, with additional input from C.A.'s I was currently working with), in addition to our past Multi Hunters. Those are probably the only ones I suggested, but I always gave feedback on prospective team members as we were looking for new options.
Q: What is with the love of the Shawshank Redemption?
A: I don't know what you mean. I'm a phantom. An apparition. Second cousin to Harvey the Rabbit. I don't exist, except on paper. Bananas.
Q: How many bananas a day do you eat? Any Particular brand of Banana you choose over any other? Do you only eat them whole or do you combine them, i.e smoothies, cake etc?
A: As many as I can find. I like Natural Bananas. Best whole, but still good in other concoctions. I eat most of my Bananas in The Longest Thread, Thread, which has always been an original hangout for myself and my banana eating habits.
Q: Will the foreman himself never make a map? And why have you never made one, despite contributing so much to other maps in the foundry?
A: Here's a secret. I once tried to make a map. Long ago I worked on an Iberia Map with Marvaddin, who made the Brazil map if you are not familiar with him. But it never got very far, and I decided not to pursue it. After that, I've vowed never to make a map, or have my hand in any official cartography as a "Map Maker." The irony, hypocrisy maybe even?, of being Foundry Foreman is too good not to continue. I'm a fan of absurd and extended jokes, and this just may be one of those qwerks.
Q: Which Map is your most favorite, and which is your least favorite?
A: My least favorite? Any of the difficult/non-standard/conquest/banana maps. I don't want to play them.
My favorite map? Hm, I've always liked the maps that were around in the early days that I had a lot of input on---like Space, USApoc, CCU, Africa, Greece, Discworld, etc, and of course Asia, USA, and Classic. Jota's maps---Space, USApoc, CCU, Discworld---those ones especially, really kept my interest in the Foundry, because he was the first cartographer to experiment with slightly non-standard gameplay like his idea of "shared regions," "negative bonuses," "regions not a part of a bonus group," and "a tiny bonus group for +1." Those things were revolutionary during the early part of the Foundry, and he certainly made it interesting!
Visually though---I love the look of Oaktown's maps, and of course RJbeals and Widowmakers and Mibi and Gimil and MrBenn too---their visuals always strike and catch me. They're like Bananas.
Q: Has there ever been a map that has taken your breath away, and you just wanted to Quench it right there and then but had to restrain yourself?
A: Nope. Strangely, I often dislike maps in the early production. Maps usually have to win me over, and show me that they've got some value.
Q: If you were forced to choose... Who is your favourite Map-Maker?
A: If I had to split this question, I'd split it 3 ways. Favorite early era Map Maker? Jota, for many of the ideas mentioned earlier. Favorite middle era Map maker? DiM, though I can't really stand his maps, and we butted heads a number of times in the Foundry!. He kind of took the torch from Jota in introducing non-standard gameplay. Favorite current era Map Maker? Hm, someone from the list I mentioned earlier. If I had to choose? Oaktown's visuals nearly always get me.
Q: What would do if a group of ninjas suddenly stormed into your house while you were doing your ConquerClub duties?
A: I happened to come across the "Deadliest Warrior" yesterday while perusing television. It's some show on Spike TV (if you are unfamiliar with it, think: a network mostly for men), where they would pit the world's "deadliest warriors" against one another. The show I happened to have just seen was Spartan vs Ninja. The Spartan won evidently. So I'd probably go grab my Spartan shild, spear, short sword, and bronze armor, and fight them because Spike TV has informed the world that is how you defeat ninjas.
Q: How big is your banana tree?
A: What are you asking here? I like veiled innuendos.
Q: Do you eat the peels along with the banana? Do you care if the banana is rotten or not?
A: Fresh is always the best. But in times of desperate bananas, any will do.
Q: What is your favourite novel?
A: Catch-22 probably---I enjoyed Heller's humor.
Q: Have you seen Snakes on a Plane? Did you think it was awesome?
A: I have not seen it unfortunately. Will I? Maybe if Bananas are involved.
Q: Do you miss Twill? How has your role changed since Twill has left?
A: Who doesn't miss Twill!
But I still see him on from time to time. So far, my role hasn't changed much. We'll see what Hyasri and Optimus Prime have in store for me, if anything!
Q: Is there a female monkey in the picture?
A: No, as you can see my avatar only has a picture of myself.
Q: What is the history behind your avatar?
A: Hrm, it's my second avatar. Though the only one used here. I had a strange skull as a while on some other websites while I went under an alternate alias. But anyways, who doesn't like Curious George? I like to think I'm curious...and a monkey. So it fits. I've another avatar image of Curious George that I've yet to use...it's in color, so it would be a change...but I'm not sure if I will change it. Thoughts?
Q: Penguis or Turtles?
A: Turtles, but only if they are nervous and of the painted kind. This a reference to a joke that no one on Conquer Club will ever get, but it makes me laugh inside and out, and that is all that matters.
Q: How many hours do you spend each day on Conquer Club?
A: On average probably 3-4. Somedays a little more, some days less. Some of that time is official, some of that time is just me playing games (which I'm getting better at mind you), or perusing the forum.
Q: Tell us what it is like in a day of the life of the Alpha Monkey & Foundry Foreman?
A: Usually the day starts off with Bananas, and then ends with Bananas. And usually there are Bananas in between. As you can see my reverence for Bananas is evident, as I frequently capitalize Banana for no reason. What was the question? Ah yes. Bananas, and then lots of E-tickets and PMs, and perusing secret hidden forums where we plot our evil Banana needs, and then regular CC forum perusing, and Foundry work also. Throw in some games, and then call it Banana.
Wait, this is the last question? No "What are your hobbies, talents, favorite movies, nicknames, favorite words, music, etc?"
I've got tons of favorite words and talents and hobbies and movies and nicknames, and I love old Blues from the 20' and 30's, and music from the 50's and 60's, and sometimes the 70's. But, but, but, alas, I guess its time for me to get back to work since that's the last question.
What junk.
I'd be outraged if I was you, reading this.
If I was you reading this, I'm not really sure what that makes you.
But certainly outraged.
Probably angry enough to throw away a Good Banana.
Maybe even two Good Bananas.
What kind of life is this?
That's what I'd like to know.
How about you fill me in?
I'm sure we'd all like to know.
Sometimes I feel like an old man shaking an angry fist at the sky.
Think about that one.
Twice.
What?
Q: Thank you for your time Andy
A: Oh, I'm not done yet. I just thought I'd switch to this question now.
Which really isn't a question, but is posing as one.
That's devilish.
I ain't leaving.
Not without my Bananas.
You can't take my Bananas from me.
Not without a fight at least.
I'll fight you to the bone.
I'll bone you to the fight...? Doesn't seem to have the same meaning.
I like fighting.
Where are we going?
--Andy[/spoiler]

Greetings fools!
I'm going to kick off this guest article by saying that concieving and then writing one is not as easy as it sounds. Already I've deleted three possible beginnings to this and I'm worried the finished article will be a load of twaddle. My consciousness is telling me to stick to general feelings about Conquer Club and try to write them as sensibly as possible, so let's do that. How hard can it be?
I enjoy logging on here every day, I really do. I look forward to taking the turns and annihilating the opposition, despite what my rank suggests. I find the general atmosphere and environment of the forums to be relaxed, intriguing and often very amusing. The moderators are genuinely likable characters, and you don't get that with all websites. The help and advice on offer for new players and veterans alike is second-to-none - a big thumbs up to the creators of The Training Grounds and the Strategy Ad-Hoc Group. I was introduced to mafia games here, and the responsibilty of leading a clan. Hell, I could even buy a CC t-shirt if I so desired. Finally, we have the hundreds, maybe thousands of regular posters who make the place what it is. My thanks to you, especially the people who put up with my shenanigans. I'm not naming you though, this isn't an Oscar speech.
I will however name the two CCers who invited me on a day trip to London back in February - the struggling alcoholic "nagerous", and the evil Australian "Skoffin". I had a brilliant time meeting you and wading through the seedy shadows of ol' London town. If any of you other readers get the chance to meet up with other people on the site, I would highly recommend it. Just make sure you meet them in a popular place of course...
Well this seems like the right place to round off, although a certain someone never mentioned how long he wanted this thing to be. A quick note to the future guest article writers, hopefully your pieces will be better written and more specific than this one was.
So then CCers, good luck out there on the field, although I know you cretins get more of it than I do anyway...

Hello again, my fellow conquerors. A lone map was quenched this time, but our beloved (ex-) CA oaktown has left the building with his official role, although he will be staying on board as a FA (Foundry Assistant).

What happened with TUC?hulmey wrote:hmmm KOE...I joined them when I first started on CC. Rayray (ex LOD leader) had joined them and I was invited to join by KoE_Razorsedge. I really enjoyed by time there and Razorsedge was a brilliant leader. However, he left to found LOD, due to KOE being abandoned by its leaders. I tried to help KOE and managed to increase its membership from just me to over 30 members. But there was a power struggle going on and KOE-LION, backed by his faithful warriors from another Risk site, started causing problems. So with 5 other members we decided to make our own clan The Untouchables, built on a democratic foundation.
What would you recommend that new and existing clans do to manage through the peaks and valleys of being a clan?hulmey wrote:TUC was built on democracy and we had 3 godfathers which were rebelmen, yorkiepeter, and myself. They both left and everything fell on me. I had passion and managed to get good players in and also people that were committed to clans. Once the clan was strong again, I believe it was probably one of the best clans to be in at the time, I wanted to return the clan to its roots of a democracy and to be honest my love affair with CC was over. I till today hardly visit this site and I only come on to check the forums, around once a week, when i got nothing else to do at work. Anyways, there was a lot of talk from xruan, wcaclimbing and others that they could pull this off with a clan council where everyone had certain roles to play. However, the problems began when one of links breaks, it will all come tumbling down. And it did, and there was nobody capable to pick up the pieces. I was gonna try, due to being nostalgic about TUC, but again my love affair with CC was over and my attempt died as quick as a beautiful sunset.
What is your role in your current clan?hulmey wrote:You got to have passion, dedication and most importantly time. Try and get people involved in the day to day running of the clan and reward them for their efforts. People love rewards. Get negative people out of your clan. Negativity is the end of everything. Most importantly, people need to respect their clan leader and I think I lost that due to my headstrong nature around the CC forums.
hulmey wrote:I'm not in a clan on CC anymore. I'm in a PS3 clan for the game Call of Duty: World at War. We have over 1000 members and our clan is built on a ranking system, much like CC's scoring system. I'm ranked Colonel and I'm in charge of a Brigade strong army of 100 members. Its fun, rewarding and I've made so many friends. I've found my home. If any xbox or PS3 guys are interested in a tactical gaming clan built on a military based system, they can pm me.
In my time here on CC, I have seen clans fold primarily due to 3 reasons being:
- Inactive Leaders
- Inactive Members
- In-Clan Disputes

[spoiler=Interview with AndyDufresne]Q: Hey Andy
A: Ahoy Ahoy!
Q: How does it feel being the longest standing Admin besides the site owner?
A: Good.
