The Scum Insider Newbie Help Want to get into the Mafia scene, but don't know how to play or even what it is? Consult these threads: Mafia Information , Mafia and You , and Rules and Terms of Mafia . Too much work? Too lazy to read through everything? No worries, you can always jump right into a game and ask for other players or the game runner to help guide you.What is "Mafia"? Mafia, for those of you that don't know, is a game that generally takes place in a town, where the townspeople have to determine who the mafia (or "scum") is and lynch them via a majority vote during the day and the mafia try to kill everyone at night and bluff their way out of getting killed by the town.Mafia News Muppet Mafia was a C9 game run by a first time mod, ShaggyDan . Both mafia players survived, and eventually endgamed the remaining townies. Great job from a new mod, who has promised a Dragon Ball Z mafia in the future.Mafia Callouts Calling all players interested! Some mafia games need some filling: Sign-ups: Seeking Replacements: Consult the Replacement Thread to see what games are in need of reserves/replacements. Now get out there and investigate Mafia for yourself: viewforum.php?f=213 Advanced Roles and Strategy by safariguy5 We discuss a dastardly mafia role this issue.The Suicide Bomber What is It? The Suicide bomber is a role who has a one-shot night action which will kill any target while sacrificing the bomber as well. This kill will ignore any protections, but should the bomber be roleblocked, nothing happens. This is an extra kill that does not count as a mafia's regular nightkill.Example Jack is a Suicide Bomber. He targets Bob for the bomber nightkill. Although Alice protects Bob, Bob still dies. Jack dies as well.How to Play this Role Suicide Bombers are almost always Mafia . Generally, they are used in games where multiple antitown factions exist. If the mafia has a suicide bomber, it's generally in the bomber's best interest to save his kill until a town power role or another powerful threat to mafia is identified. A suicide bomber trading his life for a VT or a less useful role generally is not a good trade.
show: Interrogation of agentcom
Hi agentcom! Hello there! Q. You've recently joined The Fallen, one of CC's up and coming clans. What do you guys hope to achieve? First of all, I hope that we can show that we are in fact “one of CC’s up and coming clans.” It’s very competitive out there, but we have a solid core group of players that I think can play at the top levels. We’re definitely still working out some kinks, but our compelling victory in our first clan war was quite a good start. I'd say that our goal over our first few clan wars is to make it into the top 10. Q. What is your favorite map and game settings? I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE All Your Base. Before that it was Waterloo. Those are the only two maps that I’ve ever tried to “specialize” in because I had to pick a “home” map for some tourneys I was in. I like to think of myself as an all-around player who can compete on any map and settings combination. As for the settings, I generally prefer foggy, chained, escalating games. My favorite game type is probably 1v1, but playing with a good dubs partner like you (Benzorrr , Xman5151 , chapcrap or Jippd would be a very close second. Q. Who are your favorite people to team up with? (careful with this one mate) See above. There’s a reason that Benzorrr and I have 185 games together at last count. Hard to turn away from a teammate that has netted me 1000 points and a 2/3 win ratio. Benzorrr and Xman were really my first consistent teammates on this site and we will probably continue to join tournaments together until the day we leave. Also, both are very dependable sitters when I need to slip out of town for a day or even a week. They both have made my CC experience much more enjoyable. Jippd is easily the best player that I have played with. I have a great deal of respect for him and his clan, and I would never turn down an invite from them. Recently, I’ve obviously been playing games with Fallen. I’d say that chapcrap has been my favorite teammate so far. There are a lot of other honorable mentions from both inside and outside my clan, but I’ll move on … Q. You were like 10 points away from making Brigadier. When are we going to see that happen? I know, right! I was checking my score very frequently around that time. Unfortunately, I then went on a 450 point slide from which I am only now recovering. I like 1v1 games and 1v1 tournaments too much to think that I’ll ever hold onto Brig for too long (if I get there). But I thought the same thing about Colonel. I love points, but I also love the wide variety of maps, settings, and opponents on this site. There are particular game types that I have proven good at, but just don’t like. For example, multiplayer, no spoils and flat rate games that go into the hundreds of rounds. I have collected quite a bit of stats on my gameplay and I’m pretty sure that I could get to Brig if I tried. The one way that I might make and hold Brig is if I continue my recent increase in team games with quality teammates. I have definitely benefitted (pointwise, among other ways) from my recent teammates. Q. When you go 'out of town' and I have to sit for you, where do you go? What is your favorite vacation spot? I usually go to visit my fiancée, who lives in a bordering state. We’ve been together for about 8 years, engaged for over three and have spent roughly half of all that time separated by at least a state (if not an ocean!). I’m very thankful for the time I get to spend with her, so I would say my favorite vacation spot is wherever she’s at. (BTW, she hates this site haha.) As for geographic locations, I love heading back home to northern Nevada--the Lake Tahoe area, specifically. I like the combination of gambling and lots of outdoor options that you can’t find in many other places. Q. Who do you think you are? I AM AGENTCOM. BOW BEFORE ME. Q. Currently you are with suggestions team, have you considered another volunteers team? I hadn’t even considered the suggestions team when I was asked if I was interested. There’s not enough time in the day to read through everything in the Forum, so I had started keeping up with and contributing to some of the subfora, including Suggestions. I am glad that I ended up there, as I don’t think that I would be interested in moderating a lot of the other ones. Maybe someday I’ll move up in the moderator hierarchy, but don’t expect a lateral movement from me. Q. What is the meaning of your username? I wish, there was a less nerdy response, but it is actually the website of some company that I hope to have someday. “A.G.” are my initials; “Ent.” is short for “Enterprises”; and “com” would be the top level domain for commercial (and other) websites. It’s been a common username that I have used since high school when I came up with my "plan" to eventually own a company. Of course, I had no idea what business I would end up in, so I thought that “A.G. Enterprises” would be a cool name for whatever I did. I just checked and agent.com directs you to a real estate search. I’ll probably need quite a bit of money to pry that away from them. Q. If you were a pokemon what pokemon would you be? I play sports … or at least did when Pokemon was popular. Is that still a thing? Q. How many PMs have you sent to teammates in the last 4 weeks? LOL. X actually turned me on to this PM Team thing, which I 'm sure he now regrets. My Sent Messages tab isn’t even big enough to go back 4 weeks! Out of my most recent 50 PMs (which only goes back a little over a week), 28 of them have been PM Team or responses to them. So over 4 weeks, I’d say it was somewhere between 75 and 100. Maybe I should cut back And this is even now when most of the people I play with have Chatglove, so those PMs are only from the portion of my team games that we are with teammates sans CG! Q. Why did you assemble that rifle so quickly? Hmmmm … the last time I assembled a rifle was years ago. But I was being timed on it, so it was probably the pressure! Q. Where would you like to visit, and why? I have been interested in China and India for years. Studied them lots, but never been there. Someday … Q. What's your favorite excel formula? So many to choose from! I’m no Excel pro by any means … wtf are macros?! I recently discovered “eq.rank”, which is pretty cool, but not the most useful function. And I’ve had to go back an delete it from my larger spreadsheets to speed them up. Vlookup and Hlookup have proved increasingly useful to me. But I also have found a lot of use for the find/mid/left/right functions to pull specific data out of a text string. For example:Code: Select all =IF(B12,"-",IF(ISERR(FIND(" ",Input!$A$7, SUM(FIND( B2, Input!$A$7)+ LEN(B2)+ IF(MID(Input!$A$7, FIND( B2, Input!$A$7)+ LEN(B2),1)=" ",1,0)))),RIGHT(Input!$A$7,LEN(Input!$A$7)- SUM(FIND( B2, Input!$A$7)+ LEN(B2)+ IF(MID(Input!$A$7, FIND( B2, Input!$A$7)+ LEN(B2),1)=" ",1,0))+1),MID(Input!$A$7, SUM(B6: LEN(B2)+ IF(MID(Input!$A$7, FIND( B2, Input!$A$7)+LEN(B2),1)=" ",1,0)), FIND(" ",Input!$A$7, SUM(FIND( B2, Input!$A$7)+ IF(MID(Input!$A$7, FIND( B2, Input!$A$7)+ LEN(B2),1)=" ",1,0)))- SUM(FIND( B2, Input!$A$7)+ LEN(B2)+IF(MID(Input!$A$7, FIND( B2, Input!$A$7)+ LEN(B2),1)=" ",1,0)))))
Is a function I wrote to pull some settings data from Maprank, where B2 is the name of the setting and Input!$A$7 is cell containing the “Options” cell. Of course, I broke it down into a bunch of different steps, but the above is the full code of what is executed. Q. Let's say you were a cashier... Would you check me (chapcrap) out? Why do I have to be a cashier? Q. What do you like about being a Suggestions Moderator? Even when I was a common user, I liked the Suggestions Forum and disliked the cynicism toward it. For $25 per year (or for free for many!), this site provides me and each of many, many users with hundreds of hours of entertainment. Starting from that baseline, it’s hard to be as cynical. Furthermore, the Archived Implemented Suggestions Forum shows 650+ suggestions that have been implemented in the past 6 years. I’m sure some of those are repeats, but that number doesn’t include who-knows-how-many updates that did not go through the “regular” suggestions process. That said, there is a lot of room for improvement. The “process,” for one thing, could be better defined. When Suggestions was separated from what is now Bug Reports, not everything was been put in the proper place, something that many of the Suggestions followers have seen me trying to rectify in past weeks. The stages of getting a suggestion implemented—Suggestion, Sticky, Submitted Suggestion, Implemented Suggestion—could be better defined. The process for major suggestions will always take a while, but there are numerous “quick fixes” that take just as long because there’s no way to separate them from the masses. This is another thing that I hope to work on during my time here, and I have received the support and encouragement of other mods above me and from different teams. We shall see where it goes. Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten about your question: I like being a suggestions mod because I like this site, want to support it, dislike the cynicism, and think that there are areas that I can really contribute. Q. Let's say you were Santa Clause and I (chapcrap) was on your list... Would you take a second look? I wouldn’t have to … I just realized you wrote Santa “Clause” … like the Tim Allen movie? Q. How many multi's are you hiding from me (TheForgivenOne)? And how will you bribe me to keep it quiet when I become a Multi Hunter and discover all of your multi's? I wish I had time for all my games AND enough multi accounts that I could boost my score. Not that that’s what I would choose to do with my time, though. If you did catch me or my 6 multi accounts, I would bribe you the same amount everyone else bribes CC when they’re busted: $25. Then I would start the process over again. Q. What's your favorite shade of green? I'm not really a big fan of green, but it's the color I'm stuck with. My favorite color would have to be red Q. Do you want me (rdsrds2120) to bribe TFO to stop bribing you to hide the multi's? He knows, I know, we all know. Wait, so now TFO is bribing me to hide his multis? Or is he bribing me to hide my multis? Did you mean “extorting”? Well, whatever the answer, I’d say just add or subtract $10 to the amount—whichever makes me better off! Q. Would you push rds's buttons premaritally? I think premarital button pushing is the best kind of button pushing, but I haven't done any postmarital button pushing. Also, you can replace “button pushing” with a lot of other things and those sentences still work. Q. How many maps would you call yourself a master at? I know I talked a good game to get me into the Fallen, but I would say All Your Base is the only map that I have truly mastered. I believe that I could take on all comers in with any settings on that map. There are plenty of other maps that I think I am really good at, but that is the one that I have mastered. Q. What is your worst map? I lost a shitload of points on the stupid fking St. Pats map back in March. I was in a tournament in which I got killed, then in an attempt to earn some points back I started making some other types of games on that map. In foggy games, I failed to strike at the right time. In 2-player games, I failed to kill neutrals. In large games, someone always seemed to be able to outplay me no matter what strategy I used. It was a very frustrating experience that cost me about 1000 points. The only map that even comes close to that is Luxembourg, on which I have lost 500 points. A lot of it has to do with playing low-ranked opponents, but I abhor those two maps now. Q. If you were going to make CC more like Harry Potter, what would the 3 unforgivable curses be? Rant time! I do not like Harry Potter. I know this is an unpopular stance, and it has led to many arguments with the Potterheads out there. This is not because I think wizard books are lame or anything like that. Also, I gave HP a chance to impress me. I read the first couple books and watched the first couple movies. And I’ve got to say, he’s just a shitty wizard. This guy is supposed to knock the socks off of Lord Voldemort and it seems that he would have trouble finding his wand if it was stuck in his eye. Hermione is a far superior wizard in those first two books (and far cuter in the movies). The saving grace of Potter in those first two books was either (a) the coincidental arrival of friends with what happened to be just the right skills or powers for whatever bind HP had gotten himself into or, relatedly (b) dumb luck. I am not a fatalist. It takes a good work (literary or cinematic) for me to appreciate a movie which contains coincidence on the level that makes things seem like they were destined to happen. I feel like I'll allow the suspension of disbelief to take me a lot of places. Just not there. In answer to your question, I don't think I made it far enough to read about unforgivable curses. Q. What do you think of Agent Orange? Well, I guess I can say that it seemed to be effective for what it was designed for. Gotta love Monsanto. (Actually, I just read that Dow Chemical also had a part in it's development. Did not know that.) Q. What do you think of Agent 86? Had to Google this one. Are you talking about DJ Agent 86 ? I'm listening to that now. I like it. Or maybe this Agent 86 band. Ugh, the singer has a really annoying voice. Or maybe this Agent 86 . I'll just say TV has improved greatly since that time, in my opinion. Well, some of it has. Q. What do you think of Agent Coulson? Heading back to Google ... Oh that's Agent Coulson . I like him. But Robert Downey, Jr. is probably my favorite from those movies. Q. What do you think of Travel Agents? Do they still exist? I would think the internet would have rendered them useless by now. Q. Do you thing you're as good as Agent 007? Sean Connery's 007, no. Daniel Craig's 007, yes. Q. If 007 actually played CC, would he be conqueror? He would hold the position briefly until Chuck Norris came along. And then not only would Chuck Norris be Conqueror, there wouldn't be anybody left on the scoreboard. Because ... Chuck Norris would never lose a game. When Chuck Norris wins a game, you die in real life. You can never decline a Chuck Norris invitation. Chuck Norris can play all 15,124 players in speed games, at the same time. Chuck Norris is able to invite freemiums to speed games. Let's hope Chuck Norris never gets on CC. Q. If not, what rank would he be? Conqueror, but only briefly. See above. Q. How long before you're a brig? I'm at 2866 right now, but with the games I'm in now, it's gonna take a while Q. Would you support CC moderators as fellows or would you instead scrutinize them more, now that you know them? I'd say both. Almost all of the moderators that I've dealt with on this site, in the areas that I frequent have been good people trying to make this site a better place. So, I fully support them in that. But behind the scenes, we all scrutinize each other's actions and try to keep ourselves from getting out of line. Q. What do you feel about the various departments(and their interaction with Joe the non multi public)? Other than a limited number of instances where I've seen mods lose their cool, I think all the moderators act professionally, respectfully, and appropriately toward other users. Especially, when they're acting in their "area of influence" (i.e. when I'm in Suggestions, or when TD's are in tournaments, etc.). I don't know if other users know this, but when a moderator gets out of line, it usually turns into quite a behind-the-scenes discussion telling them to cool it. We do try to hold ourselves to a higher standard in our interactions with other users no matter what part of the site we are on. Q. Do you consider yourself to be the best player among the mods? Yes At least in the games that I like to play. I'm sure there are better freestyle players or trench players, for example. There are only a couple of higher ranked moderators that I know of. Q. Who is your most favorite actress/actor and name your top 10 must see again movies.. Actor: I don't know. Brad Pitt and Edward Norton came immediately to mind (and I haven't even seen Fight Club in a long time) Actress: Natalie Portman Top 10 movies: Shawshank Redemption A River Runs Through It The Matrix Trilogy (yeah, even the second one) V for Vendetta Stepbrothers Wedding Crashers The Hangover The Lion King (have to throw a Disney movie in there) Hamlet 2 The Hammer If you haven't seen the last two, you must. Q. Is there a Mrs. agentcom? Soon. May 26, 2013 Q. When can we expect agentcom Jr? Hopefully a few years after that when we get settled. Q. If you were a Buddhist, would you be a Mahayana or Vinayana Buddhist? "The older version of Buddhism (the Hinayanas) believed that the only way to attain nirvana was by leading a monastic life of austerity, abandoning all worldly pleasures." (Source ) That doesn't sound promising " the Mahayana sect has a much larger following because of their more liberal interpretation of the teachings of the Buddha than the Hinayanas. The newer school allowed for the possibility of enlightenment to all those who followed the path of righteousness, irrespective of their status in society. Synonymous with the Mahayana sect are the values of love and compassion combined with that of knowledge. " Id . So, I'll go with that one. Q. Do you believe in Ghosts? Not really. I'm kind of a Deist, so I don't really believe in much supernatural interaction with this world. Q. Is Elvis really dead? "No, Elvis is not dead. He just went home."Q. Can you describe the view when you are looking up at a T-player hoisting the trophy in HAs 200th... ? Unfortunately, I cannot. HA's 200th tourney has been ABANDONED !! From what I hear, they aren't even looking for a replacement director. This is a travesty. We discussed this in the http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=91&t=134927 and it's probably the biggest Risk tournament of all time. ... Wait! What?! I just went back there and realized that it has been moved back to active status. THANK YOU HA!!!! Sorry if I caused any panic there. Q. How sad are you going to be when we crush your team in the A team tournament? I think I'm the one who should be asking you that! Thanks for your time agentcom! Thanks for having me!

Office of Strategic Services ! Ol' Sully will be your guide for this issue! Today I've got for you an interesting discussion I had with some fellow Live Chat frequenters about "the ultimate strategy". Is there even an ultimate strategy? If so, what is it? Well, see if you agree with any of the fine players that participated in the survey!

Hello again my friends, and welcome to your favorite part of the Newsletter, "War Games", where you can find information about CC Tournaments! My writers have really had a burst of activity this time, and I am absolutely delighted to bring you an edition with no fewer than five excellent articles! I'm really proud of my team, and very pleased to present their work to you.
First, let me dispense with one bit of bad news, and then we'll get on with the good. The promising new writer I introduced to you in the last issue,
Campin_Killer , has been busted from breaking Rule #1. I liked his writing, but our standards require us to remove major rulebreakers from the team, so with very mixed feelings we say "bye bye Campin".
Ok, on to the good stuff. The part of our
new , new writer will now be played by
woopintroysbutt . Woopin has produced "spotlight" kind of article about his favourite tournament organiser,
theRev1957 . I myself ring in with an interview with one of the greatest tournament players on the site,
BluU . DaveH has two features again, including the twenty-fourth installment of Tournament Tips, and of course the TPA Update. (Remember, even if you never organise any tournaments, you can earn college credit towards your Accounting diploma by studying Dave's advanced Excel macros!) Last but not least, WorldCup4James carries on the tradition of JoinThisOrNot! Enjoy.
Dukasaur Tournament Executive Who is the Rev? by woopintroysbutt show
Therev1957 joined Conquer Club on May 27th 2009 and has recently jumped into the Tournament scene. His first Tournament was started on April 6th, 2012 and since then has hosted 46 Tournaments. His first Tournament was a City Mogul Doubles Tournaments. He ran three Tournaments on City Mogul and then turned his attention to hosting a series of 43 (so far) 1 v 1 Trench based Tournaments on Random Maps. He has also hosted one Doubles Trench based Tournament. Based on his explosion into the Tournament world, I felt an introduction to therev1957 (Rev) was in order. Rev’s username is based on two things. First he is involved in the missionary field (a Reverend) and was born in 1957. Rev felt the calling to become a missionary at the age of 15 while listening to a preacher from Canada. He then began studying to become a missionary. He attended Maranatha Baptist Bible College in Watertown, WI where he majored in Bible and Missions, and minored in Spanish and Biblical languages. He then entered the mission field in 1981. He and his wife are missionaries in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. He is a church starter and teaches sects, cults and religions and his wife teaches others how to teach and also teaches piano. He joined CC in May 2009. He discovered CC from an advertisement on another website on which he played chess. He has long been a fan of strategy types of games and used to play many games with his family as he was growing up. His favorite Map is City Mogul, but also enjoys WWII Poland, the Fuedals, Lunar War and Arms Race (although he does not feel he is very good on it). He enjoys a variety of settings, but on City he prefers Chained, No Spoils and Fog, and on WWII Poland he prefers Unlimited, Nukes and Fog. Rev started Tournaments with City Mogul because he was familiar with the Map. But quickly switched over to Trench Tournaments on Random Maps because his goal was to achieve his Gold Medal in Trench Warfare and is good on a wide variety of Maps. So by hosting the Trench Tournaments, it was a quick way to get his Gold Medal. Rev has almost every medal in Gold, so getting his Trench Gold was his ultimate goal. Well, he was successful and on August 7th, 2012, he was awarded his Gold Trench Medal. He was awarded his Bronze Trench Medal on April 16th, 2012. So his tactic of starting the Trench Tournaments to get his Gold Medal was very successful. Finally, Rev has used his talents playing CC to teach others how to play and is a member of the Academy Team Game Teachers.
Meet the Tournament Winners: BluU by Dukasaur show
Major BluU has been a CC member since January of 2007. His wall shows 86 medals. 30 of those are Tournament victory cups, because 30 is the most of any one type that your profile will show. In truth, however, BluU has earned 91 victory cups. He is the third-highest name in the Tournament Winners Hall of Fame . Last week, I had a chance to have a few words with him. This will be a two-part interview. In this issue, I'm going to discuss with BluU his amazing record as a tournament winner. In the next issue, I will carry on asking him about his new career as a tournament organiser.Dispatch: You've got 90 tournament wins to your credit. I can't even imagine how long that takes! Any idea how many tournaments you played in overall? BluU: I've got 91 wins . One tournament finished but I've yet to be credited for. I started enrolling to tournaments on September 2010, so it took me less the 2 years to achieve it. How many tournaments, that is a good question. I was asking myself the same question. I guess above 1K. I can always query the forum and count, but I'm too lazy to do that Yeah, I checked Game Finder and found out you have almost 6000 tournament games in hand, but there's no easy way to extrapolate number of actual tournaments from tournament games. Anyway, let's talk about your 91st win, since it's still fresh in your memory. Which tournament is that in. (And don't worry about stealing anyone's thunder; it will be a week or more before this is published.) It was It's A Knockout!!! Age of Merchants . One of the 1 vs 1 tourney series by Serreski . It was a simple 32 players bracket, with the finals best out 3. I had a lot of experience with this Map in the past playing doubles, but not so much in 1 vs 1, so I didn't think I'd win, when I signed up. But this is a great map and nice settings, so I knew I'd enjoy the ride (and I did). I ended up playing the host at the finals, which is always sweet. The results of the matches were pretty obvious before they ended, so he actually proclaimed me as the winner while all 3 matches were still on . That was a first.Pretty impressive. You did have good luck going first in 2 out of 3. How often do you think luck overwhelms someone, and how often is it just a minor factor? Allow me to start my answer with the assumption that CC random engine is indeed Random. I know there are many players out there that doubt it. Luck is a great factor of the game, as it must be as we play with dice, but I really believe that if you play so many games as I did, luck evens out in the long run. I noticed too many times in the past that players credited their loses for bad luck while crediting their wins for great strategy. IMHO, what defines the good players is their ability to overcome bad drops and bad turns. When people are saying, “Oh I had bad dice against you”, do they take into account that the other player might have positioned himself defensively at the end of his turn to minimize the chance to lose his bonus? It is easier to criticize the game’s random engine than to be objective about your own tactics and dice management. Yes, I must admit that I had great runs of luck in the past, but I also had great runs of bad luck, but no one seems to remember those, but myself. I honestly believe that I’m a good player, All I have to testify on that is my tournament wins total and compliments dignified players write me from time to time on game logs.The fact that you're one of the players that manages to keep high rank despite playing in a lot of tournaments proves you're a good player! I looked at your MapRank graph and it looks as if you haven't dropped below 1800 since some time in 2008! I think what you wrote is an excellent summation of the luck issue. So, what are some of the most memorable moments from some of your past wins? Well, I obviously remember my first win. I was pretty anxious to get my trophy so I messaged Sniper08, the tourney host, asking if he knows how and when will I get it… I cherish every win in merch313’s DE series. I have 18 of those so it is 20% of my tourney wins. I led this series’ all time winners list for a long time, but Swifte passed me and now I’m in pursuit ., So whenever I meet him on a 313 DE Series match it is like the superbowl for me. Tell me a bit more about this series. (And by my count you have 19, not 18. Did you win another recently, or is there one that isn't counted as part of the series?) I have 2 wins in 313 tourneys that are not part of the DE series and 18 in the series.I interviewed Swifte a few months ago, and he too talked about this series. What is it about 313s Double Elims that seems to fire you up? I encountered several time in the past when TOs promised to conduct a series on all the CC maps. But most of them abandon their series sooner rather than later. Merch didn’t promise, he just delivers. When you have a series which has 168 tournaments and counting. When HOF board is being kept and maintained, and when you know more tournaments will come, that’s just makes it more interesting than winning another 16 players classic map tournament. Merch also is doing a great job with notifying the players after the tournament on who won, and were he sits in the HOF board. This motivates the participants to do better next time in order to climb that board. greenoaks is on the same route in his KISS series. When I see one of these I don’t even need to bother reading the rules, all I need is to sign up and wait for the invites to come.Strong endorsement indeed! I really will have to interview merch one of these days! Carry on, please. What are some other memorable milestones? Any tournament game against HighlanderAttack is exciting, both of us are obviously very competitive tournament players, so we get to meet quite often (135 tournament 1 vs 1 games thus far), so I believe we established a very good rivalry between us which is based on mutual respect. Specific tournaments wins I remember:patrickaa317 's Win 1 of 2 Singles Ladder tourney was a good one, with 76 players starting and you had to win at least one of your two 1v1 games in each round to advance. When only me and one player were left, we had 4 rounds in which we won one game each. Patrickaa317 asked if both of us want to go for a one and done decisive match. I wanted to continue playing two matches in each round until someone gets two wins, as I was enjoying the good matchup + I was confident I can win at least one every round. Unfortunately my rival opted to drop from the tournament as he preferred the one and done option, and refused to continue with two games as the rules initially stated. That was a sour end for a very enjoyable tourney.School Yard Bully was another I remember as it had a cool concept and lasted almost 5 months. You had to challenge other participants, so there was a strategic aspect on who you should challenge and when. I had to play 80 1 vs 1 games to claim the crown.Every one of those you mentioned is 1v1. Very obviously your favourite game. What do you like besides 1v1? You know that about half the tournaments are 1v1, so it has become my most common game, by virtue of what the tournament market has to offer … I really like Terminator and Assassin tournaments. They also help me chase those two golden achievement medals that I’m missing. Before I came into the tournaments scene I played thousands of Trips and doubles games with two guys, Amirberner and DarkSheet . We played so much that we rarely needed to discuss anything in the game chat as we grow some blind understanding. I enrolled for some tournaments with them, and still do. But I think that the fact the we used to play our double games back in the day in unlimited\flat rate mode is not helping us, as these are rarely used in tournaments. Amir is not that active anymore, so we have no team for trips and quads. I join a quad game from time to time on public games list, usually to chase a medal that I’m missing, like trench.I imagine you get losing streaks just like everyone else. What do you do to stay motivated and keep on trucking when things are going badly. Do you have any tricks to keep yourself positive? After you lose more than 5K games you kinda immune to losing (Funny winning is always fun no matter how much you do it). When I have bad rolls or pure bad luck, I might hit the table or curse. I can write a nasty message on the game chat, "complimenting" my opponent on his good luck, but I rarely ever press the "Post Message" button. . What I most commonly do is just move on to my next playable match, or from time to time attend some other non CC related issues, you know, that thing other people call "life". Oh, yeah, life! Where do I download one of those? Well, thank you very much for taking the time to speak to me! In our next issue, Part Two of my conversation with BluU will focus on the tournaments he is running. .
Tournament Tips by DaveH show: Excel coding to set up a tournament - Part 4
As we continue the coding for setting up a tournament spreadsheet, in this article we will define the coding for randomising the list of players. Firstly we add a "Randomise" menu heading to our "Tournament" Excel menu bar that will run the code in the subroutine "RandomCode". The extra code for this, which is added to the subroutine "CreateMenu()", is as follows:Code: Select all ' Add a menu heading for randomising the list of players Set cbcSubMenu = cbcCutomMenu.Controls.Add(Type:=msoControlButton) ' Give the control a caption cbcSubMenu.Caption = "Randomise" cbcSubMenu.OnAction = "RandomCode" 'Randomise programme cbcSubMenu.FaceId = 1376 'assigns an icon
This adds to the existing menu, so that you get the following: The complete randomise subroutine is as follows:Code: Select all Sub RandomCode() Dim irow As Integer 'starting row Dim icol As Integer 'starting column irow = 7 'starting row position icol = 3 'starting column position 'check that the table exists A = Cells(irow, icol).Value 'First Heading If A = "" Then MsgBox "You need to select 'Create Template' first." Exit Sub Else 'check that the table is full i = Cells(3, 2).Value 'Number of players k = 0 If Cells(4, 2).Value = "Doubles" Then i = i / 2 k = 1 End If j = 1 While j < i + 1 If Cells(irow + j, icol).Value = "" Then MsgBox "The player list is not complete" Exit Sub Else j = j + 1 End If Wend 'check that the list is not already random If Cells(5, 2).Value = "Randomised" Then MsgBox "The player list has already been randomised" Exit Sub Else 'copy and paste the table Range(Cells(irow, icol - 1), Cells(irow + j - 1, icol + k)).Copy Cells(irow + j + 1, icol - 1).Select ActiveSheet.Paste 'copy in a random number For i = 1 To j - 1 Cells(irow + j + i + 1, icol + k + 1).Value = "=RAND()" Next i 'sort and clear the random number Range(Cells(irow + j + 2, icol), Cells(irow + j + i, icol + k + 1)).Select Selection.Sort Key1:=Cells(irow + j + 2, icol + k + 1), Order1:=xlAscending, Header:=xlNo, _ OrderCustom:=1, MatchCase:=False, Orientation:=xlTopToBottom, _ DataOption1:=xlSortNormal Range(Cells(irow + j + 2, icol + k + 1), Cells(irow + j + i, icol + k + 1)).Clear 'Show that the list is now random With Cells(irow + j + 1, icol - 1) .Value = "Random" .HorizontalAlignment = xlRight .Font.Bold = True End With With Cells(5, 2) .Value = "Randomised" .HorizontalAlignment = xlRight .Font.Bold = False End With End If End If End Sub
There are a number of checks to make before randomising the list of players' names. Does the table exist?Code: Select all A = Cells(irow, icol).Value 'First Heading If A = "" Then MsgBox "You need to select 'Create Template' first." Exit Sub Else
Is the table full? Code: Select all 'check that the table is full i = Cells(3, 2).Value 'Number of players k = 0 If Cells(4, 2).Value = "Doubles" Then i = i / 2 k = 1 End If j = 1 While j < i + 1 If Cells(irow + j, icol).Value = "" Then MsgBox "The player list is not complete" Exit Sub Else j = j + 1 End If Wend
Has the list already been made random? Code: Select all 'check that the list is not already random If Cells(5, 2).Value = "Randomised" Then MsgBox "The player list has already been randomised" Exit Sub Else
If all these conditions are Ok then we copy the table and paste it below the existing table. Code: Select all 'copy and paste the table Range(Cells(irow, icol - 1), Cells(irow + j - 1, icol + k)).Copy Cells(irow + j + 1, icol - 1).Select ActiveSheet.Paste
Then we insert the Random Excel function. Code: Select all 'copy in a random number For i = 1 To j - 1 Cells(irow + j + i + 1, icol + k + 1).Value = "=RAND()" Next i
Then we sort by the random number and then "tidy up" by deleting the random numbers. Code: Select all 'sort and clear the random number Range(Cells(irow + j + 2, icol), Cells(irow + j + i, icol + k + 1)).Select Selection.Sort Key1:=Cells(irow + j + 2, icol + k + 1), Order1:=xlAscending, Header:=xlNo, _ OrderCustom:=1, MatchCase:=False, Orientation:=xlTopToBottom, _ DataOption1:=xlSortNormal Range(Cells(irow + j + 2, icol + k + 1), Cells(irow + j + i, icol + k + 1)).Clear
Finally we insert text that the list is now random - which also prevents the operation being carried out again. Code: Select all 'Show that the list is now random With Cells(irow + j + 1, icol - 1) .Value = "Random" .HorizontalAlignment = xlRight .Font.Bold = True End With With Cells(5, 2) .Value = "Randomised" .HorizontalAlignment = xlRight .Font.Bold = False End With
The table now looks like the following (depending on your settings!): All the code for all subroutines is as follows. (Those of you follow the coding closely may spot that some parts of my previous publications have been simplified. That's because I too am still learning!)Code: Select all Sub CreateMenu() Dim cMenu1 As CommandBarControl Dim cbcCutomMenu As CommandBarControl Dim cbMainMenuBar As CommandBar Dim iHelpMenu As Integer Dim cbcSubMenu As CommandBarControl Dim PlayerNumber As Integer '8, 16, 32 or 64 etc Dim GameType As String 'Singles or doubles etc Dim ColStart As Integer 'starting column number Dim Rowstart As Integer 'starting row number ' Put some default information in Cells.Select Selection.Font.Bold = False If Cells(3, 2).Value = "" Then Cells(2, 2).Value = "Tournament Settings:" Cells(3, 2).Value = "16" Cells(3, 3).Value = "Players" End If If Cells(4, 2).Value = "" Then Cells(4, 2).Value = "Singles" End If Cells(2, 2).Select Selection.Font.Bold = True On Error Resume Next Application.CommandBars("Worksheet Menu Bar").Controls("Tournament").Delete On Error GoTo 0 Set cbMainMenuBar = Application.CommandBars("Worksheet Menu Bar") iHelpMenu = cbMainMenuBar.Controls("Help").Index Set cbcCutomMenu = cbMainMenuBar.Controls.Add(Type:=msoControlPopup, before:=iHelpMenu) cbcCutomMenu.Caption = "Tourna&ment" Set cbcSubMenu = cbcCutomMenu.Controls.Add(Type:=msoControlPopup) cbcSubMenu.Caption = "Number of Players" ' Set the '8' player menu heading With cbcSubMenu.Controls.Add(Type:=msoControlButton) .Caption = "8" .OnAction = "Players8" If Cells(3, 2).Value = "8" Then .State = msoButtonDown Else .State = msoButtonUp End If End With ' Repeat for the 16, 32 and 64 player menu headings With cbcSubMenu.Controls.Add(Type:=msoControlButton) .Caption = "16" .OnAction = "Players16" If Cells(3, 2).Value = "16" Then .State = msoButtonDown Else .State = msoButtonUp End If End With With cbcSubMenu.Controls.Add(Type:=msoControlButton) .Caption = "32" .OnAction = "Players32" If Cells(3, 2).Value = "32" Then .State = msoButtonDown Else .State = msoButtonUp End If End With With cbcSubMenu.Controls.Add(Type:=msoControlButton) .Caption = "64" .OnAction = "Players64" If Cells(3, 2).Value = "64" Then .State = msoButtonDown Else .State = msoButtonUp End If End With 'Add the second menu item that will lead off to another menu 'Set a CommandBarControl variable to it Set cbcSubMenu = cbcCutomMenu.Controls.Add(Type:=msoControlPopup) ' Give the control a caption cbcSubMenu.Caption = "Game Type" With cbcSubMenu.Controls.Add(Type:=msoControlButton) .Caption = "Singles" .OnAction = "TypeSingles" If Cells(4, 2).Value = "Singles" Then .State = msoButtonDown Else .State = msoButtonUp End If End With With cbcSubMenu.Controls.Add(Type:=msoControlButton) .Caption = "Doubles" .OnAction = "TypeDoubles" If Cells(4, 2).Value = "Doubles" Then .State = msoButtonDown Else .State = msoButtonUp End If End With ' Add a menu heading for creating the template Set cbcSubMenu = cbcCutomMenu.Controls.Add(Type:=msoControlButton) ' Give the control a caption cbcSubMenu.Caption = "Create Template" cbcSubMenu.OnAction = "FormatCode" 'Main programme cbcSubMenu.FaceId = 625 'assigns an icon to the dropdown ' Add a menu heading for randomising the list of players Set cbcSubMenu = cbcCutomMenu.Controls.Add(Type:=msoControlButton) ' Give the control a caption cbcSubMenu.Caption = "Randomise" cbcSubMenu.OnAction = "RandomCode" 'Randomise programme cbcSubMenu.FaceId = 3817 'assigns an icon End Sub Sub FormatCode() Dim aplayer As String Dim irow As Integer 'starting row Dim icol As Integer 'starting column irow = 7 'starting row position icol = 3 'starting column position With Cells(2, 2) .Font.Bold = True .Value = "Tournament Settings:" End With Cells(3, 3).Value = "Players" i = Cells(3, 2).Value 'Number of players aplayer = Cells(4, 2).Value 'Type of game k = 0 'Flag = 0 for Singles) If aplayer = "Doubles" Then k = 1 'Flag = 1 for Doubles) i = i / 2 'Table is half size End If For j = 0 To k 'One or two player rows Cells(irow, icol + j).BorderAround _ ColorIndex:=0, Weight:=xlThin Range(Cells(irow, icol + j), Cells(irow + i, icol + j)).BorderAround _ ColorIndex:=0, Weight:=xlThin Next j For j = 1 To i Cells(irow + j, icol).Offset(0, -1).Value = j Next j If k = 0 Then 'Singles With Cells(irow, icol) .Value = "Players" .HorizontalAlignment = xlCenter .Font.Bold = True End With Else 'Doubles With Cells(irow, icol) .Value = "Player 1" .HorizontalAlignment = xlCenter .Font.Bold = True End With With Cells(irow, icol + 1) .Value = "Player 2" .HorizontalAlignment = xlCenter .Font.Bold = True End With End If End Sub Sub RandomCode() Dim irow As Integer 'starting row Dim icol As Integer 'starting column irow = 7 'starting row position icol = 3 'starting column position 'check that the table exists A = Cells(irow, icol).Value 'First Heading If A = "" Then MsgBox "You need to select 'Create Template' first." (These "tips" are ones that I have tried to make it a bit easier in managing my own tournaments. I am sure there are different and better methods than these, so please let me know. Any queries on the above I'll be glad to respond to! Please note that I use Excel 2003, so there may be variation in the menu instructions if you have Excel 2007)

I am now signing up prospective TO's, so if you want to join in, just select a free date and let me have your tournament details. Dave

Welcome back for another overview of featured tournaments looking for players. Surprisingly, as I was writing this article, I found that nearly every tournament I looked at is either completely full or just a few players shy of being full! Maybe because it's the end of the month? Regardless, here are some quality tournaments with just enough spots open so that, by the time you read this, you should be able to take part in the excitement.Jigs WWI Tourney jigger1986 offers a novel tournament concept centered around the Great War. Players declare to fight for one of the great powers of the war, and battle across five rounds in not only 1v1 games, but also 5-player Standard games, Doubles games, and Quadruples games. The tournament even offers a glimpse of the Trench Warfare map, showcasing the deadly, muddy stalemates that ensued across Europe. There's numerous parties to fight for and still some spots available, so sign up today!High Dollar Super 40 This Classic map tournament presented by Billdo not only offers the forty competitors plenty of chances to advance in each round, but the great twist is that all the Standard games have Freestyle turn order. It's not often that we find Freestyle tournaments, so if you're a " 'free-stylin' " kind of guy, don't miss out! Most games are either 5-player or 4-player, with the No Spoils setting.Mad Championship [Portugal I] Mad777 's time-honored 1v1 series continues with the tenth of the 24 challenges. The longer you survive in the tournament, the more points you'll earn towards the grand standings board, which compiles the scores of all players across all 24 individual tournaments. Unlike most tournaments, signups continue until the set date September 6, meaning an unlimited number of players can join! There's just around five days remaining to either continue your trek in Mad's Championship, or to join in for the first time. There's lots of points to gain!DKs Best of 2011 IV--Escalating In his thirtieth tournament (a milestone in the business of tournament organisation), Dukasaur has developed another of his popular multiphase tournaments across nine of his favorite maps, from Middle Ages to Fractured China to California. The nine, core phases offer an array of 5-8 player Standard games before the tenth phase, a massive series of 8-player Terminator championships. The tournament structure offers a relatively low phase-to-phase attrition rate, enabling you to stay alive for many rounds and thoroughly enjoy the variety of maps and games. These are my picks, but if you don't like any of these go to the Create/Join a Tournament or Tournaments Tab and take a look at the many others waiting to be filled. If you're craving tourney action now, check out the Requests for Immediate Players section of the tournament forum. You can be playing very quickly after signing up as a reserve.
Well, it's back to normal, for most, in the foundry. There's a couple of problems still struggling to get past the protest and there's a small storm brewing with
Oneyed but hopefully that will blow over before the next issue. If not then let's see if we can't get to the bottom of that then. In the meantime, another storm was
DiM and
koontz1973 has taken time out to investigate that story for this issue. I can assure you that one isn't over yet so read this issue and wait for updates.
koontz1973 is back on deck properly now so he's updated the

What's Where articles. PM me with your thoughts and suggestions. Do you like it? Can we do better? Is there something else you want? And, to round out the issue, I take another look at how the
Conditional Borders are impacting the foundry (yeah I know that
Nolefan5311 did a number on this last issue too but you can't get enough of a good thing!). Early days yet, but take a look and feel free to provide feedback on that too. In fact, I'd be keen on anyone PMing me their thoughts on the foundry part of the newsletter with your ideas of what would make it better for you (and to let me know that people out there are reading it
). And while we are about it, who would argue with Mob Wife Drita Davanzo:
They say what doesn't kill us makes us stronger ... I say what doesn't kill me better run faster than me.

The Feudals in winter would be nice to see, and how about Trench Warfair.Speaking of Trench Warfair Around 15 people since this map has been released, posted in the thread asking how to attack over the middle in a trench game as it has so many killer neutrals. So to help all you out, here are the rules for the trench setting as posted by the site.Special Gameplay: Trench Warfare With trench warfare you can only assault from regions held continuously since the start of your turn. If you conquer a region (or re-conquer a region) you cannot assault further from that region during the same turn. The one exception being 'killer neutrals' (explained on the Gameplay Notes page) from which you may continue assaulting. The game no longer involves steamrolling across the board. Instead you gradually advance your front!

DiM by koontz1973 show
These maps all have one thing in common. They have all been conceived and drawn by DiM . They have all, by DiM himself, had a notice to remove them from the site as a whole. DiM wrote: i'm currently in the process of amiably (or via legal methods) removing all my quenched maps from cc.
Can he really do this, not to sure but as a map maker, he would of recieved this as we all do.Conquer Club copyright agreement between the site and map makers. The author retains copyright on their work, and gives Conquer Club permission to use the imagery free of charge, for as long as Conquer Club sees fit on the Conquer Club website. Conquer Club cannot sell, lease, or lend the right to use the images to anyone else. The author swears that their map is their own work, or a legal derivative work and by submitting it, do hereby claim all responsibility for that being true.
Note the first sentence. He owns the image but Conquer Club has the right to use it for as long as it likes. So where does this leave DiM. Probably at a place where he should save his money from the layers, let the players have the maps and be thankful that for the last 5 years, he has produced some of the best loved maps for the site. It is just a shame that at a time when DiM is really polishing his craft to the highest abality, he felt he had to bin 4 new maps so close to the finish line.Click image to enlarge. Click image to enlarge. Click image to enlarge. Click image to enlarge. No one can say if DiM will get his maps removed, but if you like them, better get a few extra games started as they may be your last. Happy gaming everyone, whatever map takes your fancy.
Conditional borders: Fledgling Start by thehippo8 show
So conditional borders are here. The whole foundry has gone bananas. Everyone is getting on the bandwagon. There’s an avalanche. We can’t cope with the activity. It’s like a one-armed paper-hanger with an itchy foot. Calm down everybody, how are we supposed to cope with this influx? Seriously, where are all the ideas? Where are all the maps? Come on folks – give us maps to sink our teeth into! Ah well, at least we have the following three ideas. Escape by koontz1973 Click image to enlarge. Every now and again a mapmaker comes up with a map that is a game all in and of itself. This is about as far away from Classic as you can get. And about as exciting as Gameboy with freeze-frame playmode (ok I mean that in a good way). There’s an excellent back-story and a clever maze to scoot around. Things to do along the way and an objective to boot. Well, clever stuff. This could be one of those maps that can really throw the Zombie amongst the pigeons in Clan wars. Still a lot of thought to go into it, so get in there and throw in your thoughts. But, well done koontz1973 – you are well on the way to picking up that mapmaker of the year award (.. is that again?).River land by ManBungalow Click image to enlarge. Working on familiar territory, ManBungalow produces a map that looks peculiarly like another of his offerings still hurtling through the foundry. Obvious question, why not combine the two and have one map you really like? This is perhaps an example of where bunging in a new concept for the sake of it is probably not the best idea. And ideas is where this currently sits as it falls too short to be a draft.Knocking ladders by dakky21 Click image to enlarge. Single worst, half-baked load of old tosh that has had the unbelievable gall to thrust its rude visage into our presence in many a long day. And it doesn’t work! But weirdly, I really like the whole thinking behind this. Yeah, so it’s a crappy graphic and barely an idea ... but think here of Donkey Kong, Pinball or even Sonic the Hedgehog. Maybe the extra element of simultaneous decaying zones on the trigger of a condition is necessary or maybe it ain’t. But the thought process being employed here is very clever. Add to this a back-story, some gameplay and some decent graphics and you are on a winner my man! HIPPO assessment of Conditional Borders Heuristics – Adding Conditional Regions adds a degree of logic to games which is less rigid without them. This lends itself well to defining routines and structures in gameplay. In a sense this provides more realism to the map and gives the player more of a sense of involvement and interaction. Definitely a plus to the heuristics connoisseur. Intrigue – While other maps are static and lifeless, by adding conditional borders you bring you map to life. Perfect for turning a story into a game. Planning – Some maps defy any rational sense for planning (but then I am a moron so don’t worry if you disagree) but maps with conditional borders give readily discernible targets to go for. They also change the nature of the map from the before state to the after state. Progression – Some maps define progression in terms of territory alone. Games with conditional borders will enable clever clogs to take victory from otherwise certain defeat by sneaking through a door ahead of an opponent. Overall feel – This is where conditional borders come into their own. There’s no substitute. They are the real deal. They turn a map from static to dynamic. And frankly that’s got to be a good thing in my book! Future of Conditional Borders The options are limitless (well limited to the imagination of those who post in the foundry). This might help revive some maps languishing in the recycle bin and breathe new life into some of those great ideas languishing in the hidden recesses of the foundry. I think the future is bright, even if the uptake is not immediate. Well ... actually ... hold the bus! I think I was a bit hasty before because it’s not like there is no takeup. There are actually a number of map-makers tinkering with conditional borders within the maps that they are working on:Cairnswk has added conditional borders to his mindboggling 1588 Spanish Armada :Click image to enlarge. koontz1973 has added conditional borders to enhance his Labyrinth :Click image to enlarge. Mishalex considered conditional borders in his France 2.0 but rejected it as unnecessary.Oneyed has also rejected conditional borders from his Fragmentation of CSFR (or at least that was out before he retired his maps for the moment – hopefully not for long).BigBallinStallin contemplated conditional borders as being necessary before finding a work-a-round prior to conditional borders being available when working on his Israel map .MarshalNey came up with a work-a-round due to there not being conditional borders when working on his Secesh Heresy: Gettysburg (before he faded off for a while – but hope he comes back to finish it because he promised ... even if that was two years ago!).theBastard almost came to a grinding halt because he wanted conditional borders when working on his Baltic Crusades (before he faded off for a while – but hope he comes back to finish it because he promised ... even if that was two years ago!).Finally, Danyael really struggled with his Goblin Tribes and I believe that map would be here and working today as he said ... i like the idea of complete bonuses as well but with the xml
problem
(but the last work was November 2009 ... although there was a flicker of hope when Danyael commented in April 2011!). Well, there’s lots of possibilities and I can’t wait to see what you clever map-makers will come up with next! Although all my dreams would come true if Danyael would come back and finish his map (I ask selfishly!)!

Lets take a quick look at the round 2 match ups for NewComers Cup 3, which just went underway in the last week or so.AKA vs TNC TNC off their fresh win vs TFFS is looking to continue to show their power against a strong looking AKA clan. AKA received a bye in round 1, so are looking to hit the scene of NC3 with their first win of the tournament. TNC is currently leading 8-3. They are still in their first set of games.ROTS vs 1RFG 1RFG was able to take down MB in the last round to head into the war vs Riders of The Storm who received a bye. ROTS is still a very new clan for participating in clan wars. I expect 1RFG to have a pretty simple win vs these guys. The games are currently underway with a few that still need to be filled. The score is currently 0-0.Fallen vs HH Both of these clans have a very powerful list of members. Even though Fallen has been just recently formed I do expect them to be able to put up with the firepower that HH can provide. The current score of this match is 0-0, but I expect it to be a very close war all the way through, with the winner only taking it by a few games. Igni Ferroque has advanced through to the semi-Finals due to a forfeit and some major miss understanding from several members of Retribution. IF will be waiting on the winner of AKA vs TNC war.
