Welcome Comrades to the 80th edition of the Dispatch
We start of with another review on the latest from the
danger mafia zone, and Macbone wax lyrical in his interrogation.
TPA is the highlight of the tournament arena right now, while WC4J is always good value with his wrap-up on the latest tournaments on the go at the moment.
Foundry continues with it's interactive experience with a new competition on the go this week as our most popular section continues to have widespread appeal while Clans is all about CC3/CL4 since apparently the other 50 wars aren't interesting enough to share
Unfortunately it's been a comedy of errors getting this latest issue out as without Sully we seem to be a somewhat headless bunch. We'll still be running without a Strategy section, but I hope you won't despair as we bring quality news on the latest & greatest from the world of CC.
Leehar Aide d'Exec If you would like to apply to join the news team, please visit the thread below for more details!
Click here for Recruitment Details... Welcome back to Freestyle readers. This issue, macbone talks about the Far East, the SoC, and some history. There's a new Scum Insider for your perusal, and it is sweltering out here in California. Just thought you should know.

The Scum Insider Newbie Help Want to get into the Mafia scene, but don't know how to play or even what it is? Consult these threads: Mafia Information , Mafia and You , and Rules and Terms of Mafia . Too much work? Too lazy to read through everything? No worries, you can always jump right into a game and ask for other players or the game runner to help guide you. What is "Mafia"? Mafia, for those of you that don't know, is a game that generally takes place in a town, where the townspeople have to determine who the mafia (or "scum") is and lynch them via a majority vote during the day and the mafia try to kill everyone at night and bluff their way out of getting killed by the town.Mafia News Official H.P Lovecraft Mafia is now taking signups. Grab your trusty rifle, your best spellbook, and some elder signs, we've got us some unspeakable horrors to banish back to the nether realm. Medals and a continued existence to the winners, unending despair and torment to the losers.Mafia Callouts Calling all players interested! Some mafia games need some filling: Sign-ups: Seeking Replacements: Consult the Replacement Thread to see what games are in need of reserves/replacements. Now get out there and investigate Mafia for yourself: viewforum.php?f=213 Advanced Roles and Strategy by safariguy5 This issue, we discuss an armorer's role. The Gunsmith What is It? The Gunsmith is a role that generally comes in two variations. One variation is where the Gunsmith can investigate someone each night and see if they have a gun. This shows whether or not this person is a killing role. While mafia and SKer's carry guns, so do town vigs. The other variant is a role where the gunsmith manufacturers a one-shot kill device and gives it to one person. This can either be done the same night or the subsequent night depending on balance and mod preference.Example Jack is a Gunsmith. He investigates Alice and finds she has a gun. He knows she has a killing role now.How to Play this Role Gunsmiths that are of the investigative variety are pretty straightforward to play. With minimal risk of outing a town power role, claiming guilty results is pretty straightforward. As discussed before, town vigs generally are most powerful towards late game when played correctly, so an early outing wouldn't necessarily put them at the top of the mafia kill list. The more unique role is a bit trickier to play. One-shot kills can be very powerful if given to mafia or SKer's, as it gives them the ability to kill twice. If the mod allows it, it's probably best to store one or more "guns" and give them to people who are confirmed town later on in the game.
show: Interrogation of macbone
Hi macbone! Hola, saf! Q. Okay, mac.... why are you such a cool dude? Did you take cool dude lessons, and where? Me, cool? Definitely not. I’m so nerdy it’s painful. =) I’ve been fortunate enough to be friends with a number of cool dudes, though, so maybe I absorbed some through osmosis or something. Q. Are you a Scottish skeleton? Mac-bone? Ha! Yeah, I was going for a Scottish vibe with my username. I’m part Scotch-Irish, among other things. Q. Any relation to Macbeth or Macduff? This guy, actually. Q. What does it take to become a Lvl. 3 Arcane Trickster? Hard work, sleepless nights, and a limitless supply of banana peels! Q. Tell us about SoC team training? Wow, the answer to that question could be an article in itself. Short version – students join a training squad and are taught by their teacher, an experienced team player, the fine art of team games. Q. What is life like in Hong Kong? Are you a native or transplant? HK is very hectic! I’m an expat, and I’ve lived here for two years now. Q. If you were a pokemon what pokemon would you be? Oh, definitely Togemon. Q. Have you ever talked to a psychotherapist about your helper syndrome? It’s a gift, friend. Do you know how hard it is to find a good helper these days? Q. How much of your CC time goes into helping others? Dhallmeyer preaches 80/20, and I think I stick to that. I kinda feel guilty for not doing more, honestly. Q. What is your favorite food/dish? Oh, without a doubt lasagna, with ricotta cheese, Italian sausage and ground beef, and mozzarella and parmesan, layers and layers of the stuff. I’m sure there’s good lasagna to be had somewhere in HK, but I haven’t found it yet, though I did find a couple of good Mexican joints. Q. What was your favourite moment in the Ten Cities tournament? Oh, the Excursionist challenges, definitely. Dukasaur had the awesome idea of tying in a cultural challenge to each city stop along the way in the tournament, jokes about Montreal, Berlin’s connection to Hong Kong, stuff like that. Very fun, and very educational! Q. So.. Mac, why do you hate people so much that you get them hooked on CC? what dark traumas stands behind your vindictive obsession with catching casual gamers and through lessons transforming them into risk-fiends? I blame wacicha and mpjh, personally. First one’s free! Q. As a sort of boss of the street-level dealers what is your kickback to the don (lack) and how does the upper echelons of the mafia offer their protection? Andy sometimes gives me back massages, and I can have all the banana peels I can carry. I do it mostly for the psychic energy I drain from my students, though. Q. Since you started your get them while they are young program, does lack and andy no longer storm into your irl risk-games flipping the board over and proclaiming it an accident? Real-life Risk games? What are those? The Escalating Juggernaut does work, though. Unleash that bad boy on unsuspecting players, and it’s better than Park Place and Boardwalk with hotels! Q. Do you own a mac? If so, please give a short summary as to why you think they are better than Windows based operators. I never felt the need to own a mac, chiefly because they didn’t have as many games as Windows PCs did back in the day. But let me tell you, I love iPod touches. They’re wonderful little pieces of tiny computer goodness, and I don’t think there’s a Windows equivalent of a device that has all the conveniences of a smartphone without the phone. The Galaxy Tabs look nice, though – I wish the iPod touch was about twice as wide. It’d be just about perfect. Q. Mountain Dew or Dr. Pepper? Excuse me while I spew Dew all over my screen. What kind of a question is that? But seriously, I heart IBC Black Cherry. The Dew in HK is surprisingly good, though, much better than the Canadian crap. You can’t get the Pepper in packs in HK, either, and at HK$9 a can, it’s a little pricey, but I do splurge sometimes. They used to sell Dew in this strangely green luminescent bottle, but cans are colder. It’s weird, but I see it more in the mainland than I do in Hong Kong. Q. Do you come with MacFries and a soda? Ha! That reminds me of a night in college. We were hanging out a Taco Bell, and this dude asked my friend, “Does fries come with that shake?” Q. Are you a nice guy in real life as well or just role-playing in CC? This question reminds me of "Combat Chuck," a horrible song by the greatest undead ska band in the world, Five Iron Frenzy. =) I used to think I was a nice guy, but man, to my eternal shame, I am one mean, selfish dude in real life. Marriage has held up a mirror to my life and revealed stuff about myself that I had never known before. Better out than in, certainly, and it's been worth it, but we're all very much like the ghosts in C.S. Lewis' book <i>The Great Divorce</i>. Q. Have you been to Austria/Europe already? I spent a couple of weeks in Germany about fifteen years ago. Great people, great drinks, great food (well, ok, it was mostly bratwurst and sauerkraut, but I had a fantastic pizza while I was there). Q. How do you spent your holidays except from CC powerplaying? So we’re at the tail-end of a four-day weekend, courtesy of Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day. We hit our local park two nights in a row and walked around carrying lanterns and checking out the mobs of people. I guess you guys heard about the tragedy on the ferry Monday night. Awful, just awful. For holidays, we hike a lot, hit the beach, or barbecue at a country park. Usually great quantities of food are consumed, because Chinese people eat like crazy. Basically, the first thing anyone says when we have a day off is, ok, we’re not at the office today, so let’s go out and do some stuff. Q. What's the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning? Wander into the living room, maybe fix a cup of coffee, look out the window at the harbor outside, and think, Man, we live in a beautiful world. Q. Where is the first place you go when you log on to CC? Usually my inbox to see if there’s anything I need to attend to right away. Then I run through my Chatglove games, then the rest of my waiting games, and then swing by the SoC and FOED forums if I have time, and get in a little Team CC reading. Q. Do you miss the old days? Yeah, I’m pretty nostalgic. I wish there was some way to stay in college forever, stay out all hours of the night, go to rock shows, but still have a decent job and keep my awesome wife and kids. Q. How many random children have you kicked off your lawn? See, I live in a hotel, so we don’t really have a lawn. =) Q. How would you spend $5.2 million yen? That’s not much, but I’d probably put it towards a village house in Hong Kong. That might be enough for a down payment, but I dunno. Either that or comic books. Q. Why is the lid of a coffin nailed down? To keep the brains from leaking out, of course! But the second reason is the European vampires don't want the new breed rising from their graves, so they nail those suckers in. Q. Name your top 3 CC pet peeves. 1. Cool people leaving (wacicha, emelar, mpjh, oldrisky44) 2. People who get incredibly riled up over a game. I mean, we all get upset every now and then, and blowing steam off is good and healthy, but acting all internet rude is just uncivilized. But hey, it's the internet. People going nuts is just par for the course. 3. Players who take advantage of other players and make the site less enjoyable for those folks. If I went over to a buddy’s house, and every week he sprang a new game on me with convoluted rules that he had already mastered and completely destroyed me before I had a chance to even ask what the game was called, I’d find a new friend. Q. Kapa haka or Hongi? Q. Haere mai or Haere ra? Q. Tapu or Mana? Q. Rangatiratanga or Tohunga? Q. Ka pai or Utu? Q. Or with the MacSow's blood, that hath eaten Her nine MacFarrow, MacGrease that's sweaten From the MacMurderer's gibbet throw, Into the MacFlame? `Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe: All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe. Q. What do you like most about Conquer Club? The cool people, the thrill of an escalating table sweep, and the complimentary martinis in the SoC teachers’ lounge. Q. Why be a SoC Training Academy Instructor? That’s a very good question! I’m still trying to figure that one out. =) For me, it’s a way of saying thank you to guys like denthefrog, dhallmeyer, and Bruceswar. They helped me become a better player, and they’re still doing it for the latest generation of students. Q. What are your thoughts on TeamCC as a whole? I’m not as involved with the other departments as I should be. I respect the volunteers for their work at making Conquer Club a better place. Q. What do you think about the institution of the SoC Training Grounds? I think we have a good system worked out, but it can always be improved. What we do isn’t rocket science, but the SoC is the reason I stuck around CC back when I was a new player, and I’ve enjoyed the friendships and camaraderie we have there. Q. As an SoC trainer, are there any stupid questions? We do get some off the wall questions from time to time, but when we do, that’s a good chance to look at what we’re doing from another point of view. What might be obvious to me isn’t always obvious to someone else, and questions that bring that up are a good reminder, I think.Q. Why won't you train me (chapcrap)? Chap, I doubt there’s anything I can teach you, old boy. =) Q. That goes double for me (L M S)? L M S, didn’t we sign you up as a team trainer? And I seem to remember you being a good hand at solo Escalating in that one crazy tournament you ran. =) Q. Why did Sid Vicious cross the road? To do it his way, of course. Q. What is your favorite Manga / Anime? I really love Miyazaki. “Castle of Cagliostro,” “Howl’s Moving Castle,” “Whisper of the Heart,” “Spirited Away” – the man is a cinematic treasure. Q. Are you a fan of Mila Superstar? Never watched it. =) Q. Which of the Sailormoon girls would you want to marry and why? See, I’m already married to Kiki, so the question is moot. =) Q. How did you join SoC? I signed up as a new recruit. I don’t even think I’d finished a game yet. I found the SoC through the forums, I think. Q. Did you start as a teacher? No way. =) I worked my way up through the ranks, same as almost all of our teachers. =) Q. Was what was taught at the Society different from how you already played and if it was in what way was it? The SoC teaches primarily Escalating Terminator and Standard in our non-team training, and like a lot of players, I was focusing on taking continents, spreading out my forces. The whole Escalating Juggernaut idea was completely foreign to me. Q. Other than the Redman who was most instrumental in getting you to where you are now? I’ve mentioned them already, but mpjh, dhallmeyer, denthefrog, and Bruceswar all played a part, as did folks like gloryordeath, Lt. Futt, General Roy, and Deli. Q. How excited are you that Wacicha has resurfaced? I told them he wasn’t gone, but did they listen? Nooooooooo. =) OK, so he’s only checking in via phone, and he probably won’t return to his previous level of involvement, but any wacicha is a good thing. =) He’s still the toughest Escalating player I’ve played against. He and gloryordeath built the SoC, and it’s awesome to see him still lurking and helping out students. =) Q. What are your three favourite eras in history? I’m not really a history buff, but I guess I’d say the Greek Heroic era, the Victorian world of the League (well, let’s just say late 19th century fictional England in general), and the literary movements of 19th century America. Thanks for your time macbone! It’s been a pleasure! Sorry for all those stupid answers. =)
Hello again my friends, and welcome to your favorite part of the Newsletter, "War Games", where you can find information about CC Tournaments!
The new TPA season is under way. Several TPA3 tournaments are already either started or in signups now. For those who are just starting to notice now, our own DaveH has taken over the running of TPA for the new season, as well as cleaning up the scoreboards of the first two. Below you will find both of Dave's articles reflecting this fact, as Tournament Tips discusses his advanced techniques for compiling the scores, and his TPA update gives a general overview of what's happening. And on a personal note, I will be launching a TPA3 effort of my own on October 8th!
Meanwhile, the
other multi-tournament series, Capture the Flag, is coming to an end. We've been somewhat remiss in covering that one, compared to the heavy coverage we give the TPA, so I promise you that in our next issue we will have a full Capture the Flag Update!

Tournament Tips by DaveH show: TPA2 Scoring Spreadsheet.
Tournament Players Association Year 2 (TPA2) is a series of tournaments that goes on over a year. The first year there was one tournament released every week, this year I am helping to maintain the scoring for the 46 tournaments either completed or in progress and have used the spreadsheet that I will be describing in this article. Last issue's article described the routine used to update the individual tournament scores from the finishing positions. Each tournament has its own sheet, so the routine needs to do the following actions: * Input the tournament that you want to add its scores to the main spreadsheet scores; * Add the players names and their scores to the main spreadsheet; * Sort the spreadsheet by players names; * Check for duplicate names - if you fine a duplicate, add the scores to one and delete the other; * Sort by scores And that's it - basically. It is complicated by the fact that the three types of tournaments have their own sub totals and also that it is such a large spreadsheet that I have found some anomalies with the way in which Excel works. For instance, I like to maintain totals as a way of checking and have found that the formula used in Excel, SUM (A1:A300) say, needs to be restated as it can reduce in value even though the routine has not changed it. I therefore found that checksums were incorrect when the size of the spreadsheet increased beyond a certain point. OK. The spreadsheet looks like this:Click image to enlarge. This is sheet 1 of the spreadsheet. Sheets 2 to 48 hold the individual tournament results and sheet 49 is the Scoring sheet that I referred to last week and holds the table of possible scores for the three different types of tournament. We start, as usual, defining a few variables and assigning them values:Code: Select all Sub AddTourney() 'name of this routine Dim irow As Integer 'row number for start Dim icol As Integer 'column number for start Dim isheet As Integer 'sheet stating number Dim iplayers As Integer 'number of players Dim itourneys As Integer 'number of tournaments Dim aplayer As String 'player's name Dim asheet As String 'sheet number irow = 7 'starting row position icol = 2 'starting column position iplayer = 0 itourneys = 52 '52 maximum tournaments isheet = 3 aplayer = "" addsheet = True 'this is a flag to erase a tournament score
Then we have a call to a subroutine to count the number of players:Code: Select all Call FindNumber(irow, icol, iplayers) 'find number of players
This subroutine takes the starting row and column position of the player list and also the starting number of players to the routine and is is coded as follows:Code: Select all Sub FindNumber(irow, icol, iplayers) 'Find number of players on master sheet Sheets("Summary").Activate 'ensure you at the master sheet (called "Summary") iplayers = 0 'number of players already aplayer = Cells(irow + iplayers, icol).Value While aplayer <> "" 'do this loop until we find a blank player name iplayers = iplayers + 1 'increment number of players aplayer = Cells(irow + iplayers, icol).Value 'get next player name Cells(irow + iplayers, icol).Value = StrConv(aplayer, vbLowerCase) ' convert to lower case Wend Cells(irow - 1, icol).Value = iplayers & " Players" End Sub
The conversion to lower case is to minimise the chance of mistyping players names. We now want to find out which tournament is to be added to the master score sheet.Code: Select all 'Add a sheet For i = 1 To iplayers + 100 Cells(irow + i - 1, 1).Value = i 'put ranking order in Next i ' which sheet? B = InputBox("Add a tournament's scores? Enter week number (or 0 to exit) Enter a negative week number to subtract the scores.") If B < 0 Then addsheet = False 'subtract that sheet B = -B End If If B <> "0" And B <> "" And B < itourneys Then 'b=week number asheet = "Week " & B 'go to Sheets(asheet).Activate Else Exit Sub 'invalid sheet number End If
The ranking order is copied to the first column as this was found to change as the spreadsheet grew - without doing anything to it. Perhaps Excel 2007 gets over this? You enter the week number of the tournament to enter and you can also enter a negative number to erase a sheet's scores. Entering zero or a sheet higher than 52 or pressing cancel will exit the routine. The sheet is then activated so that you can get the information you need. Now we need to get the players names.Code: Select all i = 0 aplayer = Cells(i + 2, 1).Value 'player name If aplayer = "" Then 'no players' names in MsgBox ("Week " & B & " is not completed yet.") Sheets("Summary").Activate Exit Sub ElseIf Cells(8, 1).Value = "Entered" Then MsgBox ("Week " & B & "'s results have already been entered.") Sheets("Summary").Activate Exit Sub End If While aplayer <> "" i = i + 1 'i=number of players on the individual tourney sheet aplayer = Cells(i + 2, 1).Value If addsheet = False Then Cells(i + 1, 4).Value = -Cells(i + 1, 4).Value Wend Range(Cells(2, 1), Cells(2 + i - 1, 1)).Select Selection.Copy 'copy list of players atype = Cells(1, 5).Value 'type of tournament
The sheet is checked to see if there is a players name in the first position. If not then there is an error message. If the cell in position (8, 1) has "Entered" in it then an error message is given and you return to the main spreadsheet screen. Otherwise the list of players is counted and copied as is the type of tournament. Note that if the scores are to be subtracted from the master spreadsheet than the scores are all changed to negative scores.Code: Select all Sheets("Summary").Select Cells(irow + iplayers, icol).Select ActiveSheet.Paste 'paste list of players below last one on master
It is a simple matter to paste in the copied list of players into the master sheet below the set of names already there.Code: Select all Select Case atype Case Is = "Major" j = 1 Case Is = "Premier" j = 2 Case Is = "Standard" j = 3 Case Else MsgBox (atype & " is not permitted") Exit Sub End Select l = 1 If addsheet = False Then l = -1 For k = 1 To i Cells(irow + iplayers + k - 1, icol + j).Value = Cells(irow + iplayers + k - 1, icol + j).Value + l 'increment number of Tournaments Next k
The tournament type is checked to be a valid one of the three types and there is a "1" or a "-1" put into the tournament number next to all the new players' names under the correct column for the tournament type.Code: Select all Sheets(asheet).Activate 'back to individual sheet Range(Cells(2, 4), Cells(1 + i, 4)).Select Selection.Copy 'copy score list Sheets("Summary").Select Cells(irow + iplayers, Val(B) + 9).Select ActiveSheet.Paste 'paste in next column Cells(irow + iplayers, icol + 3 + j).Select ActiveSheet.Paste 'paste
Back to the tournament page to copy the score. Returning to the master sheet this is pasted under the correct column for the tournament itself and also the column for the type of tournament.Code: Select all If addsheet = False Then Sheets(asheet).Activate 'back to individual sheet Cells(8, 1).Value = "Entered" For k = 1 To i Cells(k + 1, 4).Value = -Cells(k + 1, 4).Value Next k Sheets("Summary").Select End If
If the scores were negative than the routine returns to the individual sheet and turns them positive. "Entered" is copied to the sheet to inhibit repeated entry.Code: Select all Call FindNumber(irow, icol, iplayers) 'find number of players Rows(irow & ":" & irow + iplayers - 1).Select 'select the players rows Application.CutCopyMode = False Selection.Sort Key1:=Range("B" & icol), Order1:=xlAscending, Header:=xlGuess, _ OrderCustom:=1, MatchCase:=False, Orientation:=xlTopToBottom, _ DataOption1:=xlSortNormal 'sort into alpha order
The new number of players is found by calling a subroutine and the whole set of rows copies and sorted by players names.Code: Select all For k = 1 To iplayers - 1 aplayer = Cells(irow + k - 1, icol).Value aplayer2 = Cells(irow + k, icol).Value If aplayer = "" Then ElseIf aplayer = aplayer2 Then Cells(irow + k - 1, icol + j).Value = Cells(irow + k - 1, icol + j).Value + Cells(irow + k, icol + j).Value Cells(irow + k - 1, icol + j + 3).Value = Cells(irow + k - 1, icol + 3 + j).Value + Cells(irow + k, icol + 3 + j).Value For l = 10 To 10 + itourneys - 1 Cells(irow + k - 1, l).Value = Cells(irow + k - 1, l).Value + Cells(irow + k, l).Value If Cells(irow + k - 1, l).Value = 0 Then Cells(irow + k - 1, l).Value = "" Next l ActiveWindow.Panes(1).Activate Rows((irow + k) & ":" & (irow + k)).Select Selection.Delete Shift:=xlUp End If Next k
The next block of code is to scan down the list of players' names and, if it finds two identical ones then each column value is added to the top row and then the bottom row deleted.Code: Select all Call FindNumber(irow, icol, iplayers) 'find number of players For k = 1 To iplayers Cells(irow + k - 1, 9).Value = Cells(irow + k - 1, 8).Value + Cells(irow + k - 1, 7).Value + Cells(irow + k - 1, 6).Value Next k Rows(irow & ":" & irow + iplayers - 1).Select Application.CutCopyMode = False Selection.Sort Key1:=Range("I" & icol), Order1:=xlDescending, Header:=xlGuess, _ OrderCustom:=1, MatchCase:=False, Orientation:=xlTopToBottom, _ DataOption1:=xlSortNormal
The number of players is then recalculated and the whole set of data resorted into score order.Code: Select all Call FindNumber(irow, icol, iplayers) 'find number of players For i = 1 To iplayers Cells(irow + i - 1, 1).Value = i 'put ranking order in Next i Range("F4").Select ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "=SUM(R[3]C:R[" & iplayers + 10 & "]C)" Range("F4:I4").Select Selection.FillRight Range("I6").Select ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "=SUM(R[1]C:R[" & iplayers + 10 & "]C)" Range("I6:BD6").Select Selection.FillRight End Sub

koontz1973 's adept cycling of foundry maps - you are loved but gone - for this is the last time you will see it! One last taste of the Koontz magic and then, phwwoom, it's gone! Personally, I dunno, but we are nothing if not here to listen! And to top it, given the Turtle's speed, we are going to step our motion on that column to a monthly cylce from this point on! Doodly by Qyu show
Please, make your way ... a very very long way ... to the smallest of our maps ... and maybe one of the cutiest: Doodle Earth . Some say there are two sort of maps: those which are easy, and the others. Except the Classic map, literally offside of all contest, Doodle earth is the most played map. As at the writing of this article, there are 666,196 finished games! That is above 9% of all finished games - excluding Classic games. Yes, it's huge: near one game out of every ten is played on Doodle Earth map. Why such popularity? Is it because of the low territories number - for lazy people? Because of the sweet colors - making it pleasant to look at? Because of the child-sight used to create this map - waking up the small kid soul living in each of us? Why do we love Doodly (yes, it also has a cute name. Cute, isn't it ?)? I would like find answers with Evil DIMwit , the Doodly's daddy. But he is away (since last May) and I couldn't reach him. So I will look at his legacy in the Foundry instead. He gave us two reasons behind his idea:The Classic map is, of course, beloved by (mostly) all, and we hold it dear; however, it once emerged that a larger world map would create an interesting variation. Thus we have now World 2.1. Indeed, our large map needs are met -- but what of the other extreme? The smallest map has a full thirty-two territories. And so for anyone, like me, who doesn't mind tight quarters, who loves to just bunch in and rub up against people, who just feels like playing something light for a change, I say, in this age of the thumbdrive and the RAZR, we can make it smaller.
Fair enough. ok for the official reason. But another origin is this: the world seen by Ronald Reagan . At the end, Doodly denied most this lineage, but it's still here: simple and... hum ... simple! (A tip for map creators - this idea is still free for a new map!) So let's set it back in context. The first draft was in April 2007. The 1st (already a joke?) version was released in August 2007. The 28th, the smallest map, at that time, was Circus Maximus (another strange map), with 30 territories, and Australia (with 36). So, 18 territories was a revolution ! Take a look at the first draft :Click image to enlarge. In only 24 hours, tens and tens of reactions, all positives (but two grouchies). Then come some discussions about some technicals problems with so few territories. So, not enough spoils to be drawn, but that was solved before the map was even created. Other issues included: the lack of New Zealand or other real territories; the names-too-similar-as-the-Classic-one; and what to call it? Small world? World 0.5? Crayon Club? But just ten days later we received a nearly finished draft:Click image to enlarge. And again, a lot of good reactions! The same grouchies: gniagniagnia - too small; gniagniagnia - incorrect names; gniagniagnia - childish picture, and still no title name. But for the first time "Doodle Earth " is suggested, even if by then World 0.5 had the most approvals! Many arguements were about the name of each territory. How to make them as childish as possible? Quebec became Atlantic City, then Washington, then USA ... while South Africa became Tarzania then Good Hope, then Conga. At least, it seems that the map will be named World 0.5, but when Evil DIMwit added two penguins to the "Doodle " word. Well, that did it, Doodly hit the hearts of people. But that wasn't the biggest problem. Grouchies came back against the map and echoed themselves to require that a poll be carried out as to the viability of a such map. Too childish for them, too small, unplayable with 6 players (at this time, the 8 players setting didn't exist yet), so, a Shame (with an upper S) for all players for the 10 next generations. Epic fail!! The poll gave 77% to yes to the map - as it was or continued in the same way. One month after the start, we nearly got it. The graphic is at 99% complete:Click image to enlarge. One more month for another blabla about territories names (especially Europe name, that reminds me of the real Europe) and the xml is done. The map entered the finale forge. And, at last, after 3 months of arguements and nearly 1000 messages (certainly one of the Foundry records), the map was quenched few weeks later:Click image to enlarge. I'll add, in conclusion, those words from Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr - which give all sense about this childhood map :Men do not quit playing because they grow old; they grow old because they quit playing.
Agendas koontz1973 and thehippo8 show
I once asked: is there a map that is it too much of a political hot potato that the site would not allow it? The answer came as a resounding yes - albeit from some unexpected quarters. This got me to thinking about the work of other mapmakers. Here are six maps that I thought might make a good map/idea (please keep in mind, these are chosen to see how far boundaries can be pushed).1. Assassination of JFK. 2. Using the KKK in southern America. 3. Swastika (Banned by Lack). 4. South Africa (apartheid). 5. Map of Concentration camps 1945. 6. Map of a real serial killer kills (Jack the Ripper). And the CC community responded:1. Could be done tastefully. 2. Seriously? This is a bad idea all the way. 3. Lack has made the decree, and there's a while thread about it elsewhere. 4. This could be done in a "unite the nation " way, but would gave to be done carefully. 5. This feels like another bad idea to me, that couldn't be done in good taste. 6. I struggle to see a way this could be done tastefully; you could probably get away with a jack the ripper themed map with weird masonic links etc, but it would be a stretch. Any more recent serial killer or massacre maps would only probably be in bad taste. As you can see, with the 6 topics, 3 could be allowed , one hits the bin because of a site ban and two would be deemed in such bad taste that they would never happen. These are pretty stark examples, but there are other maps that have been caught up in the politics of it all. That leads me to the question: do maps like these get seen as a glorification of ideals? To prove how easy it is to bring politics into a discussion, and thereby a reason for it's demise, I take a look at the binned map from DiM. Remember this map got all the way to the Final Forge only to be binned just before Beta. Let me come back to that at the end. Unification First two maps under my spotlight are the Unification maps (Germany and Italy) by Industrial Helix . Sorry Helix, seemed like a good place to start. Both maps show Kingdoms as they were in time but with expansionist plans. Sorry France, but Germany wants Paris back, again. Does anyone really believe that Industrial Helix thinks this is how Europe should be? Considering the Germany map was made after this time and also after they had tried to do it again, twice . Is German expansion through force and military might a good idea? I mean, it is only 67 years since World War II, memories are still fresh, analysis continues, but a map? Maybe some people would get the wrong idea and think that this somehow glorifies the wrong things? If that was the case, then all maps based around wars would have to be removed. Italy, well now that is a different story, not by much, but would that inspire thoughts of Lo so, lascia invadere la Francia ? These are all rhetorical questions, and I am sure you immediately get where I am heading!Old World Views Our next two maps that show a political agenda from the point of view of Europeans are New World and The Dark Continent . Colonisation is the word de jure . The United States of America may not be a particularly old country, but its history is replete with fighting. From its colonisation by the British, Spanish and arguably others, it is so easy to forget its more richer past (prior to colonisation) to the days of native tribes eeking their way in the world. As the great US of A grows up and learns that it's richness as a country includes embracing its Native American Indians, there remains a lot of introspection and recjoning to do. So does a map like this just fly in the face of those heady issues? How could a map showing the atempted destruction of a people be allowed onto the site? Again, the questions are rhetorical. A map all about the colonisation of Africa. This quote was taken from a Wikipedia article (unknown contributor):Africa is called 'The Dark Continent ' NOT because of the complexion of the original inhabitants nor the absence of lights, primarily because most people know very little about it. It is not a dark continent but a land flushing with sunshine and vivid light. It is last of the continents to feel the influence of Western civilization; therefore many people consider it a backward continent.
And what of this ...many people consider it a backward continent ? Seriously?! One thing we should all remember here and that is, The Bison King , who made this map, can in no way be held responsible for the beliefs of others. Colonisation of Africa is still with us today - just ask Mugabe! The whole concept of a vast land with a wondrously diverse array of people and languages simply being carved up around a board table to satisfy a lust for the spoils of war is frankly insulting. But does having these two maps on the site say that Europeans want Africa and America back? More importantly, would the removal of these maps stop the suffering? More rhetoric!Mexico Of this next map, someone asked, would it be offensive if a Mexican player had made it? Or is it alight because an American player made it? Texas, the Lonestar state has three central armies fighting for one thing. Texas. Mexico wants it back! The Native Americans want it back! The Americans want to keep it! Click image to enlarge. But seriously, how can a map change opinion or stand point if a Mexican player had really made it? The same can be said for any map that shows real life events. Would Pearl Harbour change if a Japanese person made it? How about Stalingrad if a German or Russian had made it? This is getting closer to the issues at hand. Politics are personal. Perspective is subjective.Rorke's Drift Rorke's Drift was my first map and the first time I had ever been accused of being a colonialist dog!? A player who had just played the map came over to the thread and said that it was in bad taste that this map had been made by someone from Britain as it glorifies Britain's colonialist past. It was nothing from the map that had him worked up but the story placed at the bottom of the map. It read:January 1879, around 4000 Zulus attacked the tiny British outpost at Rorke's Drift. The 11 soldiers named were all awarded the Victoria cross, Britain's highest military honour.
It was changed to:January 1879, around 4000 Zulus attacked the tiny British outpost at Rorke's Drift. The 11 soldiers named were all awarded the Victoria cross, Britain's highest military honour. This map is dedicated to both sides who fought bravely.
This change may be just semantics as both versions are factually accurate. But does that little change of dedicating it to both sides make me less of an colonialist Dog!? Well, it seemed to do the job. The most political map today? Now here is a map that really does have political fall out today. 1982 is a map of a war 30 years ago. Based around the Argentine invasion of the British held Falklands Islands. The political rhetoric has increased over the last year in the run up to the 30th anniversary. Argentina wants the islands back and Britain does not want to give them back. Both sides have a long claim to them. Not only that, a lot of the soldiers who fought in this war are still alive - passion for this place still runs high on both sides. In the bottom right of the map, you can see two territories named after HMS Conqueror and ARA Belgrano. For those of you who do not know about this, the Belgrano was sunk by Conqueror in the biggest single loss of life in the entire war. So why is it on the map? Does it not glorify the loss of life? And show the map makers (British by the way) feelings towards this issue (something that was initially said no to as well). Would it surprise anyone that it was not the map maker, but someone from Argentina and others who wanted it on? What possible reason could they have? It adds to the map, that's what!Whoops, I did it again. Dang it, more politics in a thread! And I wasn't even trying. This map, based on Hungary, has caused some genuine head scratching- not least of which for me as the mapmaker. But does this map make me a fascist, something I am not incase you are wondering. This discussion actually had less to do with politics and more to do with concept. Much like the Texas map, it wasn't really supposed to be fixed in a time or place but rather on a general concept. Although the discussion became intense - again the question remains whether it is possible for a map to be the furtherance of an agenda? Certainly , this map didn't do it, but it may be possible for some to read too much into it. In the end it all comes down to personal opinion in the end and geography . Slovakia. Remember this map. This map was chosen for this article because it is in the bin and will probably never get made now as DiM is out for the count. As I said at the start, politics is an easy option to stop a map and I chose this one as it proves how easy it becomes. Slovakia has roughly 5 million people and an area 49 thousand square kilometres. It is a member of the European Union, NATO, UN and many more impressive bodies. Slovakia became a country on the 1st January 1993 after a happy break from its neighbour Czech. Slovakia existed before as an independent state during the second world war, dependent on Nazi Germany. But apart from that, it has a very short history so surely, it could not of annoyed too many of its neighbours. Slovakization and the Slovak National Party would suggest this map should not be made by some. I am glad that no one wanted this map stopped. And one day soon, it may be taken up again, if not by DiM, then maybe by one of the countries own countrymen.Conclusion. Should politics be a reason to stop a map, absolutely not! Should a map be off limits to anyone if their country had offended another? Well, that would pretty much stop any map made by an American would it not!Sorry Americans, but you were once British, French, Mexican, Native American and any map that does not say so cannot be made. You took over that land by force, killing everything that did not agree with you, and I can go to Wikipedia to also prove you have plans to invade any country that does not agree with you today. On top of that, you cannot make a map correctly, you consistently insist on putting cities and countries in the wrong place.
If you do not believe me, then go and take a look at USA 2.1 in the main foundry. You see how ludicrous this sounds! Good thing we are not run by idiots, but we as a diverse community on CC and all the better for it - sometimes have to deal with them. I do not mind the odd scrap but keep it friendly. On a final note, I received this message among my travels:AndyDufresne wrote: Koontz, you should tackle an Israel and Palestine map next. Lets see if we can compound the number of opinions about everything!
--Andy
Thanks for that Andy. I do not mind a Palestine/Israel map, but this one will offend someone so I will take a pass on doing it. No matter what someone does with a Palestine/Israel map, you will cause no amount of grief for that map maker. Happy gaming everyone, whatever map takes your fancy.

Quarter-finals Empire vs AoC - Both AoC & Empire had relatively simple progressions to the Quarterfinals, with the former accounting for the likes of 1RFG & BOFM, while the latter took out AKA & Mythology. Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of their advancement, is the identical scoreline of 37-24 that both teams achieved in their last encounter.TSM vs AFoS - TSM were relatively untroubled in their progress to the quarterfinals taking the scalps of TLW & MD; while AFOS put on a strong display to dump IA out of the quarter-finals for the 2nd successive year (after IA's similarly shocking defeat to Foed in the previous competition), after their success over TNC in the first roundTofu vs Pack The match should commence soon after Pack have been slightly weakened over the past few months. They are still enjoying an undefeated stretch of 10+ wars so can never be discounted, but Tofu looks a strong side after some confident results off their own over the past year. They also have the psychological advantage of victory over their foes in the CL4 Cup, so should be an interesting contest all roundKort vs OSA The double-defending champions come up against the surprise package of the tournament so far, with OSA being the only clan outside of the top 20 to make it this far. Indeed, very few people predicted this course which has led to a substantial jump for those who did in our CC2 Prediction competition. However, the odds are still very much against them, as the F400 ranking gives over 96% chance of victory to the CC2 HoldersCC3 Predictions Emmdizzle & Snake242 lead the pack, with only 2 picks wrong so far, while swimmerdude99 is in a solitary 3rd, 4 points adrift. However, we're starting to see the effect of bias coming into play, as the likes of uckucki & Conchobar , even though currently in the top 10, will miss out on almost 50 points due to their Champions having been already knocked out in the round of 16
Clan League Bracket Tournament winners show
After a grueling campaign of pure bracket competitions, we finally have our winners from the respective tournaments as Tofu are crowned winners of the Premier Championship, the Clan League Cup. It was certainly a tense affair throughout between evenly contested sides, as only 1 point separated the finalists in both the Vase & Shield as 1rfg & foed missed out respectively.Cup (Clans 1-8)Trophy Vase Shield
Latest F400 Ranking show
The Top 8 remains relatively unchanged, with 7 of them still involved in the CC3 Quarters. Empire face a small dip as their victory over Tofu of a years back falls off the charts. Also expect AFoS to get a boost to their rankings in the next edition as their victory over IA hits the books. Of interest is LoW making a resurgence up the top 20, as they have perennially been a top 5 ranked clan (indeed successive semi-finalists in the first 2 Conquer Cup editions) before somewhat dipping of late. On the other end of the spectrum, The middle-latter stage of the table remains as malleable as ever, with results coming in thick and fast to make it an ever-changing presentation. The last 6 or 7 clans also experience a slight rise, as a couple of clans drop off the table due to insufficient competitions.
