A better and easier way to organize CC maps

Post by Kabanellas »

Now that we have a lot of maps available (I could count 136 maps) one can get lost while figuring out what games to play. And it actually tends to get a bit messy when you browse them.

I’m suggesting that all those maps are inserted in categories or themes, so when you want to pick a game you search for a wanted theme.

Those are my suggestions:
-World regions
-Fantasy
-Historical
-Miscellaneous

Well, just some options, they could be more or even be sub-divided

that would be a very good idea, gives the user better options when picking, and more maps may get played.

There has been a lot of discussion about ways of organising and classifying maps..
MrBenn wrote:chipv has already compiled a Map Info Database, which is stickied in the Viewing Gallery.

As for Deciding Map Complexity, there's already plenty of discussion on the subject, with more relevant discussion in the Map Organization Project and the Map Information Project threads.
...
I would love to see the maps presented in a more friendly way, but for now (and probably the foreseeable future) it looks like we're stuck with the drop-down list :-(

It used to be better, with the whole thing that had little previews of the maps and you checked off the ones you wanted for the game finder and whatever.

What about two drop down lists? One with General Categories (N America, S. America, Africa, Europe, Oceania, Asia, World, Fantasy, games) and then the next drop down list reflect the maps that fit into each subcategory.

I think rather than general part of the world the geographic maps ought to be organized by scale: World, Continent/Hemisphere, Country, City. Or something like that.

I think organizing by gameplay would be better: Conquest, Large, Medium, Small, maybe Objective?

Oh, certainly. If nothing else, by gameplay.

That would work fine Helix :)

I'd still keep the categories like:

-World (World 2.1 / Africa / Europe / Australia and so on....)
-Historical (Europe 1914 / The 13 American Colonies :) / Imperium Romanum and so on....)
-Fantasy (Midgard / Age of Realms .....)
-Miscellaneous (Chinese checkers / City Mogul / Crossword ....)

Historical maps could be divided by: Battles / Ancient history / WWII / Recent history....

This might actually be a better way to organize, I think.

I just don't like the idea of setting historical maps separate from the others though. i think geographical regions might be the way forward.

Well, there's no reason a map can't fall into multiple categories, is there? They'd be more like tags, if anything.
