Oh, nice! I like that style. Graphic-wise, not much to say atm. I might explore some more, brush/Japanese-esque fonts. And gameplay-wise (what hasn't been said before about Japan, of course) how do provinces connect to one another?

.44

P.S. o.O I love the "written in Ink" very witty ;)

Thanks killing.

Still working on the game play obviously, but there will most likely be sea-routes connecting provinces both near and far away.

Very nice Ink....
not too fussed on the cross in the background - it's vewry distracting, but otherwise a great start. luv the font. :)

love it, but you should change the abbreviation for tokushima, with tok i thought it was tokyo.

great star ink.

* I like the legend font. I don't know why but it might be more Russian rather than Japanese?
* I don't like the patterns you have chosen for the territ backgrounds.
* Can you split up Hokkaido so it's not just 1 huge pink territ? Glad to see you fit everything in though.
* The territ names are a a little difficult to read.

* Agree - we need a japan map here. The problem is the shape of the map. Is there a way to utilize the dead space? What about some blow-up maps (like mibi did with Baghdad in the Battle for Iraq map). You could zoom in on Tokyo that way. I think for this map to work, something different is going to have to be done. Something creative. Hope you find it Ink. Nice start.

Hokkaido is what it is, I'm fine with it being a single territory. (or not merging smaller ones into a larger mass.)

Perhaps the abbreviations can be the first two syllables - Waka, Toku, Sai, Yama, Oka, Kana. This way, they'll be easier to find on the drop down menus. (this appears to work for anyone but Yamanashi, because of Yamaguchi and Yamagata.)

Oita looks like it says Olta, but otherwise I like the nice, clear font you are using for the territories.

As someone else said - the cross in the background is distracting. The background is fine, but no cross.

Alright, I'll consider your suggestions. Though I'm surprised you don't like the patterns, Rj - I thought they were a nice touch!

I love this map!

I don't find the cross very distracting at all...however, for some reason the differing sizes of the abbreviation key is bugging me slightly...

also, I don't see okinawa, even though it's on the key....not a big deal, but just wondering if I'm blind, or what...

Finally, maybe you could add more islands to get rid of the "dead space"? If not, it's still one of my favorite maps.

Great looking map from the start!

1) Mind posting the territory count as of now

2) You talking about ports or like ships?

3) Personally I really like the graphics and look forward to you going forward with this :D

Very good map. I like the style of it, makes it look very Japanese with all the patters you put in. How much time did you spend on it? Looks about as good as most maps that get into the main foundry now days.

I am pretty sure there is no set vertical limit on map size. There is a strict width limit since scrolling sideways is a lot harder, but the height is merely a suggestion.

With that said, I think that you can actually place Japan's northern island on the top of the map.

Any map makers have a thought on this?

1) I'll get on that

2) I'm thinking sea-routes Italy-style to add circularity. For example, I'm thinking about these connections (I bolded the ones that will really add circularity):

Wakayama - Tokushima
Kochi - Oltia or Miyazaki

Fukuoka - Yamaguchi
Saga - Hyogo
Chiba - Mie

Aomori - Hokkaido
Hokkaido - Akita
Hokkaido Niigata

3) Thanks :D

No, sadly the vertical limit is a limit, not a suggestion :(

But thanks for the compliments.

Also I forgot to add

1) Mind making the territory names more black?

2) Get rid of those lines in the background. They are not so hot...

3) Why not just make a few ports and connect the needed spots. Sorta like Philippines map. Seems to work well for that map.

Well, ports need to be explained in the legend, and would probably all attack each other, which isn't necessarily what I want. Although, maybe it is... :-k

Also, it'd be harder to make space for them.

Quick thoughts:

1.) I'd change the title "Bonuses" to "Provinces" — the term bonuses usually refers to the troops that are coming from the continents or whatever (in this case provinces, unless I am wrong).

2.) Why is Okayama's text bigger than the others? (by the way I'd stick the title "Bonuses" there).

3.) You don't necessarily have to get rid of the cross, but maybe decrease the opacity somewhat.

4.) Love the water/ink splatter in the top right.

No need to make extra spots. Just make some places ports. Works great :D

Maybe you could make Hokkaido like quad in CCU, with it connecting to a territory in tohoku, chubu and chugoku to mix the game up a bit.

I was talking about the port icon, not extra territories. I do need extra space...

Not such a bad idea, except Hokkaido is the northern most island in Japan, so that wouldn't make too much sense geographically.

It's a really nice first draft. Well done =D>

The unplayable area is going to be, and always has been, the hardest thing about Japan... the bonus legend looks ridiculously large, but I know that's becasue you're just trying to fill up space there.

The textures in the background are a nice touch, but I think they're a little bit over-done, and are a bit harsh on the eye.

Gameplay-wise, you haven;t got connecting lines between any of the islands, so I can't really pass judgement on any of that yet ;-)

As far as making use of space goes, it will probably be worth your while starting with 888s to see if they fit - there's no point having to jiggle everything around later on...

Update:

Image
Previous Version

Done:

  • Toned down background texture
  • Made an abbreviation box
  • Made the bonus box smaller
  • Removed background cross - well actually just lowered the opacity by a LOT
  • Made 'Bonuses' into 'Provinces'
  • Made 88's into 888's
  • Changed the Tok. abbreviation
  • Added and made a port icon for placement of ports

Still to do:

  • Draw up some bonus numbers
  • Decide if I'm going to enlarge Tokyo and have it as a new continent
  • Tidy up/replace some of the edge texture.
  • Place ports.
  • Decide on whether I should split Hokkaido - thinking about it, I CAN'T have a one territory continent, can I?

Thoughts?

Edit:
It also needs a good font for territory names.

Yes, don't worry about it — as long as the +1 makes sense there are many examples of single territories being worth +1 (i.e. Downtown in Montreal, Lux City in Lux, etc.)

What does Hokkaido connect to, though?

i was wondering the same as you, but if you look at his to do, you will see, he plans to draw sea connections (or ports)

EDIT: no wait, i just realized that I can't read anything in the '3 letter word box'.
Could you put a simpler font in there?
