Skill attribute for ratings (merged)

Postby PoohsTuger on Wed Jun 11, 2008 5:49 am

Concise description:
  • Skill rating

Specifics:
  • Add skill to the rating system

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • I don't think the new rating system says anything about the player ability. A player can play like shit and still have good fair play, attitude and attendence. with adding skill, you will be able to avoid "bad" players.

I believe that the idea behind the ratings is to rate "Behaviour" and not "Skill".

In the instructions for rating it' says: Ratings are valuable indicators of your reputation on Conquer Club. They are publicly viewable and stay on your record. Ratings can be useful to find good opponents and avoid bad ones.

Maybe more 'Gameplay' then. That way its more based on them playing sensibly and not suiciding and such as apose to them being really skilled. I do agree though...I think the feedback system should encorporate this.

The problem is, everyone has a different idea of what is good gameplay. lack does not want to deal with all the complaining about bad ratings for something that is that subjective.

Yeah, but anyway, if a player have few bad gameplay ratings, they may just had a slip up or played someone with diffrent oppinion. But if a player has 100 bad gameplay ratings is not just random.

That is what the ranking is meant to do...

Is it not the case that points & medals are indicators of skill?

Yeah, points can be an indication of skill, but I think much has to do with the dice. Have seen many excellent players drop to corpolar in days....So score dosen't always tell the truth.

I agree with points being an indicator of skill, but medals are just an indicator of how many games you've played.

This misunderstanding and abuse is one reason for the new system. Too many people were giving negatives just because they did not like how someone was playing ... AND, more often than not is wasn't the higher ranked players who felt they had the lock on the "only" decent strategies.

Skill is assessed by your rank. You play well, you move up. You play poorly, lose a lot ... you WILL go down. Granted, some losses/wins definitely are due to pure luck, but in the long run, skill weeds everyone out. Putting skill into the feedback system is redundant.

Now, that said, I DO NOT like the current system. I saw plenty of better ideas discussed. This took the worst part of the old system (the subjectivity) and expanded it instead of correcting the flaws. The flaws being that people want to know different things about how someone plays. In the feedback system, there was subjectivity, but you could usually tell why someone got a neg (I doubt most people read more than a couple positives not their own) by reading the comments. Now, you have no idea why a rating was given. AND there is no way to even get absolute idiot ratings removed ... like those who give bad ratings to anyone who beat them!

Rating change suggestion

Postby Strider53 on Mon Jun 16, 2008 8:36 am

I like the new ratings changes for the most part. I would like to see one additional category of rating included - Game Skill (or something representative of that). While still subjective, mistakes made during game play are not currently represented by the current ratings categories.

I recently made a blunder in one of my assassin games and accidentally eliminated an opponent which ended the game. It was a mistake and one dufuss in the game rated everyone in the game low in all categories. While my action was a mistake, it had nothing to do with "fairness" or "attendance", so a Game Play rating would be a nice addition to the ratings categories.

lack has said many times that there was intent in not having a skill rating. He wants to see if the ratings and the score/medals will make a nice complementary system. Give it some time. Also, try asking the player why he gave you the rating and see if he will consider removing it.

The ratig system does seem easy to abuse. There should possibly be some rules. Like for attendance, if they never miss a turn you have to give a five, UNLESS, you can provide proof from pm, callouts, or live chat, that they knowingly signed on to a rt. And if they didn't post in the game chat at all, you shouldn't be able to ding them for additude. Things like that.

Adding "Skill" Rating to list of Ratings.

Postby riskybusiness08 on Tue Jun 17, 2008 12:41 am

Concise description: I think it would be a good idea if a "Skill" rating was added to the list of ratings, along with Fair Play, Attitude, etc...

Specifics: Along with Fair Play, Attitude, Teamwork, and Attendance, I believe it would be a good addition if a "Skill" box was added to that list.

This will improve the following aspects of the site: By doing this, it would allow players to see the kind of skill level of the player as voted on by the players of Conquer Club. Many players are using the "Fair Play" box as a setting to rank a players skill and I don't think this is right.

Sincerely, riskybusiness08

Skill Rating... Yet again.

Postby Simon Viavant on Tue Jun 17, 2008 2:01 am

Concise description:
  • There have been SO many threads on this, so I decided to make a poll.

Specifics:
  • I think it shouldn,t count towards the current overall, but be it's own rating. For example, next to someone's name is 4.8---4.2. 4.8 is the current rating and 4.2 is their skill rating.

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • So many people have covered this in so many different threads, I don't think I need to go into this.

I feel like it is needed since I dont want to take my anger out on the other ratings, but they try to take try to take me out for my cards with a 20 while i have 50 guys. Its not attendance or additude, and not fair play either they just arent good enough to know, and yet their rank isnt bad since they mostly play 1v1s.

The whole thing (game/ratings etc.) is all just for fun. It's only a game after all. I enjoy competition and fair play (and board games) - that's why I'm here. I'll never take anyone's comments or rating too seriously. This one guy just had a chip on his shoulder and punished everyone on the game for my mistake. Just look at the emotional reactions to the server problems of the other day! Jeez, you'd think CC was their life. It's very sad! Thanks for your reply. I'm quite new here and only here to have a small diversion and some playful fun.

People like you are why the game is fun. But, you have to consider the people who do care and who do take the ratings and comments seriously. The feedback system was done away with because mods were spending 20 hours a week dealing with feedback disputes (because one person did not like what another person wrote about them) instead of catching cheaters. There may eventually be a skill rating, but we (as a site) have to wait to see how this pans out.

I think they intentionally left out skill as part of the rating. It is far more important to be a nice person, have good sportsmanship, and just have fun then to piss and moan about how horrible someone is. Simply give them suggestions in the game chat or PM them. A rating really isn't necissary.

Exactly. There's attendance. Unless they missed turns, you have to give them a five. Additude. Unless they're a total asshole you have to give them a five. Fair play. Unless they completely suidide or something you have to give them a five. Lack said he wanted the ratings to be more about having a good game with someone and stuff like that than about skill, so this way they could be both, and skill wouldn't effect the current ratings.

Been said before, worth saying again: there already is a skill rating. It's the wee symbol to the left of your name.

I can enjoy a good loss as much as a bad win! It's playing the game is the thing. Yes, I have a strong sense of fair play and am chagrined by having some early beginners luck and making it to Sargeant and since dropping back to Private, but I ain't gonna blow my brains out over it. :D

Well, I don't think it always tells the truth. I have seen excellent high ranked players drop becuase the dice turned on them over a long period of time.
