Editor in Chief I feel privileged to present to you another jam packed edition of the news hall. We have a short and sweet article from
Minister Masket on clickable maps,
Army of GOD supplying his Top 5 Topics of the fortnight and a further story of the CC experience from our resident newt
elfish_lad , who this fortnight discusses bad dice and the various characters one encounters in speed games. Making a mod grumpy messes up the rolls? Who would've known?! Guess I should cut down on the drunk forum trolling in the early hours of the morning. Also, if you want to hear
thegreekdog on wrestling
mpjh in the nude among other things, check out his interrogation. Oh and.....

Plugins and Addons: Clickable Maps! by Minister Masket show
Let's say after a hundred or so games, you're finally getting bored of scrolling through those drop-down boxes to find territories. Are you? If so, Clickable Maps might just be the thing for you. The clue here is in the name: the downloadable script allows you to select territories on the map by clicking them. It really is as simple as that. No graphs nor calculations this time to wrap your grey matter around. It's just the traditional point and click. If you wish you also have the option of selecting keys on your keyboard to perform certain tasks - such as starting your turn - if even moving and clicking the mouse is too much effort. So yes. A short and sweet entry this issue. And yes, you will need greasemonkey to run this script, but don't panic! You can find the links for both that and Clickable Maps right here:viewtopic.php?t=104488 Next issue is the big one: "Ingame Analysis " [/quote]
A Newt's Tale by elfish_lad show
Help Wanted Wow. I've been in some amazingly tough battles in the last month. One of note was with a couple former CC champs in a doubles deal. When the match-up was revealed my partner and I mouthed these words to each other from opposite sides of the globe: Oh. Shit. CC Lords. They had squires and matching outfits and everything. But we held our own for awhile. And in the midst of it all I checked our games while at work. I typed these words: "damn this is a crucial moment in this particular game... I'll come back to it after work! " Famous last words. I couldn't let it go. Had to check back in while at work... and take my turn. I do some damage! Right on! Going to make a key fortification to my partner that could lock this sucker up and...? My boss walks in. No worries I think. I have 25 minutes left of my turn. I drop the game to the bottom of the screen. My boss sits down... and chats with me for 25 minutes and 10 seconds. My boss leaves. I miss my fort. "SweetMotherFrickenPoop!!!" I say. My boss comes back in. "Pardon???" He asks. "Damn... stubbed my toe boss!" Damn I say again. Lost that game. Lost that round three games to five. Poop. ~sigh~ Note to self: don't play CC while at work... well... maybe just at lunch. And at coffee breaks. And when things get slow. And... ack. I'm hooked. A steady income is overrated anyway I hear.Dripping, Juicy Sarcasm As a newt half way through his freshman year I've started to keep a running list of players I lurv meeting in The Pit (names are changed to protect the innocent): - Can't Keep It Up . Everything is all hot, bothered and sexy when the speed game is started... but as soon as you are up 23 territories to 5? It's Honkin' on Bobo time pal. Yeah. Suddenly a case of "I'm gonna kick your arse interruptus " hits your opponent. Fine. Honk on this. - The Freak . No. Not that kind of freak. I'm one of those. I'm talking about the "you must be cheating with the dice you forker" kind of freak. Or "freak out" let's say. Happens to me about once a week. I'm pretty aggressive on certain maps with attackers' dice. I get called a cheater about... oh... once a week. - The Smacker . Now, buddies (a loose term to be sure on a website where most are anonymous) will talk smack before, during, and after a game. But isn't it awesome when a player you have never played against before lucks out, hits your 15 stack with an 8 and breaks your bonus... twice... and does the end-zone dance in your face and tells you that you suXorZ!!!!!!! Awesome. Let's play 3 out of 5 I say. - The "it is THAT time of the month club" player . Meh. We all get bitchy at times. All of us. Been there myself. But I'm tempted to hit the "flush" button when a player complains about EVERYTHING. All. The. Time. With a blow-by-blow break down of their sucky game. Dude. Shut. Up. And give me your points. - The Used Car Salesman . The fog game is just at the tipping point and you get this: "Man you are kicking my arse!!! Good game!!! I have never played this map before and you are smoking me!!! Dude, you rock!!!" Yeah. With your 37 stack sitting behind that bush. I'll just wait for my next bonus. But thanks for the sales pitch. - The Elf? Yeah. I'm sure other players in the Speed World could easily call me the "I quit CC for the next 24 hours" guy. 'Cause... I get ticked at the dice... after a bunch of crazy losses and... a bottle of wine and some B.C. greenery. Not that I ever complain about the dice!!!! ~ahem~One Flew Over the CC-Nest Truth be told... I can complain about the "assault cubes" with the best of them. And, it seems pretty clear, that over the long haul, sun spot craziness notwithstanding, that they even out in the end. But for the sake of argument, let's make some dice assumptions here, shall we? Let us, for the sake of argument, say that the CC assault cubes (read "dice" if you will) are hooped. Let us say, again to just agree to one salient point in a hypothetical manner, that random.org and their brainy math wizardry based in the organic chaos of our universe is full-on-whacked and lack is double-whacked for paying random.org for their bogus snake-oil and that as a result his minions are no more than those flying monkey things from the Wizard of Oz and that we paying members are drunken circus freaks in light of the fact that we shell out coin to be here. Let's just say, shall we? I'm not saying that I believe any of that, but let's just begin here: that we all agree these things are true. So then, with regard to these screwed up aggression squares: what are we observing? - Having certain players on/off foe list? Messes up the rolls. - Posting crazy posts in GD? Messes up the rolls. - Making a MOD grumpy? - Playing late at night? - Too many speed games? - The dice have ALWAYS been crap in January. (Or insert month of your choice.) - They are streaky after you stand on you head for five games. (Or insert game amount of your choice.) - They personally hate you for days and days at a time because you _______________ (fill in the blank). All these things then mess up the rolls. Okay? Well then, here is the kicker: assuming all of that is true it affects us all . Which makes the dice generator fair and unbiased. I'll be damned. Who knew our very own craziness could be used against us?!?! Funny that. (Stupid logic anyway, eh?) Okay. That's it for me this issue. Odd random thoughts all over the map from The Newt. See ya'll in The Pit and may the sun-spots and dark matter of the universe bless each of your battles with rolls that are slightly above average compared to your opponents over the mean average of data collected from 1000's of players in 10,000 games. Or? Just go kick some arse brothers and sisters! E.
Interview with thegreekdog show
Q. Hey there thegreekdog A. What's crackin? Q. Approximately how much Greek are you? A. 50% exactly. For those that don't know, the name originated in college. I was friends with this guy and he asked me what ethnicity I was. I told him. So, anytime the bunch of us went out, he would tell people "This here... this is the Greek, dawg." Q. Favourite Ancient Greek? A. Pericles. He was Mr. Greece. He was an Athenian leader, general, and speaker. He promoted the science and the literature too. A true classical Greek. Q. Favourite Mythical Greek? A. Odysseus. He is the best. His story is fantastic and, as we can see from current novels and movies, his story has stood the test of time. How many movies are basically the Odyssey? I can think of five off the top of my head. Die Hard? The Odyssey. Garden State? The Odyssey. Monthy Python's Holy Grail? Not The Odyssey. Q. Favourite breed of dog? A. We had a black lab when I was growing up (Chewbacca), so I'll go with that. Q. How canine are you? A. In bed? 100%. Ruff. Q. Now the name questions are over, lets get things started with the following question from rishaed : what is your most embarassing life moment? A. I played high school football. In 9th grade I rode the bench (which really meant standing on the sidelines, not sitting). Anyway, I had to take a piss in the first game of the season in the first half. I didn't know the procedure, so I pissed my pants. My high school's football games were widely attended and people noticed. Q. A question from respected society mod mpjh , do you wrestle in the nude with men? A. Yes. If mpjh would like to take me on, he may pm me at any time. He can bring the oil. Q. The cafeteria sells each apple at one price and each banana at another price. For 1 apple and 3 bananas George pays $2.05. For 4 apples and 2 bananas Fred pays $2.70. Anne buys 2 apples and 2 bananas. How much does she have to pay? A. Each banana costs $0.55. Each apple costs $0.40. The answer is $0... her man pays for it. Q. Favourite book and why? A. Can we just stop a minute here. Why "favourite?" Why not "favorite?" Do you not know I have a problem with British English? Jeez. Seriously though, Gene Wolfe's The Book of the New Sun (collecting The Shadow of the Torturer, The Claw of the Conciliator, and The Sword of the Lichtor) is my favo rite. It's basically a science fiction version of the Odyssey (see above). Very well written; very vivid; very unapologetic. I was hooked during the introduction when the narrator and main character indicated that the account was his and maybe some of it was a lie. GO READ IT NOW! Q. How do you like your current CC clan? A. Love the Firestorm. FP did a great job setting things up. The only thing I miss is the camaradarie that we had in Flame Whores. Q. If you had to rename a CC map that is currently in play to reflect your personal thoughts on the map what would it be and why? A. Peloponesian War - "Thegreekdog's Kryptonite" - I love this map. I've played about 50 games on it (unofficial count) and have yet to win. In fact, I'm usually one of the first eliminated. Q. Bush or Reagan? A. I could make a sex joke here.... ..... um ..... I will... I like bush, because I don't know what a reagan is. In any event, President Reagan was much better. Q. Sticks or squeaky toys? A. Sticks... I like going all natural. Q. Who is the best looking girl in PF? A. Besides dnucci, I'd have to go with Alex. Q. What does PF stand for, for those that are not in the know? A. Project Firestorm. New clan. Fireside Poet set it up. An ode to himself maybe? He is a poet after all. Good players, good group. Building as I type. Q. Why does the sun rise in the east and set in the west? A. Something to do with how the universe revolves around Earth? I don't know dude, look it up... google.com. Q. Does God exist? A. I believe he does yes. Q. If you and Army of GOD would get married and had a child, would your child's name be thegreekgod or Army of DOG? A. I have pretty potent sperm, so I'd say we have twins. So the answer is "yes." Q. If you had to choose one of these women as your companion for the evening, who would it be and what is the reasoning behind your choice? A. We need to make a few assumptions first. First, we have to assume that I'm single. Second, we have to assume that it would not be illegal for me to spend an evening with one of these women due to age restrictions. Third, we'd have to assume that they are all intelligent and witty women. If we assume these things, I'd choose all of them... oh wait, that wasn't the question. I'd choose the one in the middle back behind the Asian woman. She looks Greek... and young Greek (beautiful face, perky ass)... not old Greek (wrinkles, moustache and a cottage cheese ass). Q. Why don't sheep shrink when it rains? A. Steel wool. Q. Why are cigarettes sold at gas stations where smoking is prohibited? A. This has to do with convenience. If I want to go get some gasoline for my car and also grab a fresh pack of smokes, I'd normally have to drive to two different places. However, if they are sold at the same place, I can avoid going to two places. Seems pretty simple to me. Q. What do you call a male ladybug? A. A sexuallyconfusedbug. Q. What hair color do they put on the driver's license of a bald man? A. Depends on the color of his skin I suppose. Q. Why is it that rain drops but snow falls? A. Rain doesn't drop. Rain falls and snow falls. No one says, "we're getting 2 inches of rain drop today." They say, "we're getting 2 inches of rain fall today." Q. Why do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections? A. Federal government overregulation. Q. Have you ever imagined a world without hypothetical situations? A. No. If I did, the world would implode. Even McGill University can't do this. Q. What is your favourite CC map? A. I don't really have a favorite. I have a bunch of favorite. I really like Waterloo (and Pelo War). I'm really excited for Antietam. Q. What is your best Conquer Club experience? A. I have a lot of favorite things. Nesterdude and nippersean have kind of helped me out, especially with team games. They are both very good players. Ronc, Uncle Death, and dnucci have been especially good teammates in quad games and they are good guys (despite Ronc's reputation around here). I love the fora... endless entertainment. Pimpdave, Sultan, Timminz, GabonX, nesterdude, Player, everyone... it's a lot of fun for me and is honestly one of the big reasons I do this every day. Gilligan's madness tourneys are awesome. And of course, I'm really looking forward to Project Firestorm. Q. if you were to be stuck on a desert island with one CC mod and one CC user who would they be? A. Hmm... If it is a desert island, there wouldn't be much water. Sorry. I'll stop. I'm assuming the popular answer here is InsomniaRed (the whole woman thing), but I'm going to go with Andy... he's a funny guy, he gets what he is (if that makes sense). For users, it's too tough to decide... a tie between Sultan and Pimpdave... both for entertainment purposes. Q. Have you ever hosted a tournament? Would you ever think about hosting one? A. I have never hosted a tourney. I would think about hosting one if I had time. Those guys do a great job. Q. What about maps? Do you have any secret graphical skills? A. HA! I don't unfortunately. I'm great with word and excel, but everything else... well, it's Greek to me. If this some sort of attempt to make me a moderator, I accept. Just kidding, I'd be horribly liberal with the rules. Q. What is your favourite movie and your favourite actor? A. I don't have one favorite movie or actor. I'll provide the following movies in no particular order - Braveheart, Black Hawk Down, Gettysburg, The Great Escape, Godfather II, Serenity, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, The Dark Knight, anything by Monty Python. My favorite actors (actresses too, but I tried to shy away from "she's a great actress because she's Christina Hendricks" type things) - Natalie Portman, Ed Norton, Robert DeNiro, Brad Pitt, Heath Ledger Q. if a film was made about your life, who would play you? A. You'd have to use a bunch of actors. I'd say John Belushi through age 40, George Clooney through age 60, Sir Alec Guiness through 180. Q. Who is your favourite American president? A. Abraham Lincoln, mostly because he had to deal with the Civil War. That takes a whole lot of doing. However, since that is the most popular answer, let me also go with Theodore Roosevelt. He was very entertaining. Q. What made you join Conquer Club and what has made you stay active for so long? A. A friend of my little brother's introduced me to the game. I started playing some games, started getting my ass kicked, got the obligatory pre-farming rules pm from King Herpes ("Want to play a fun speeder"), started hitting the fora and was hooked. The biggest plus for me is the amount and variety of maps. Those guys do a fantastic job; seriously, they should get paid. The other big plus is, of course, the off topics forum. I also enjoyed Flame Wars while it lasted. Q. Thanks for your time thegreekdog! A. Anytime. Thanks for choosing me to do this.
Welcome to the newest tournament article. This issue features an interview with
Optimus Prime as well as a look at the various Olympic tournaments that have been run on the site. This issue again does not include a list of tournaments recruiting players, so if you are interested in putting that list together every other week, I would be welcome to add you to the team.
For the next issue (#27),
vodean will be putting together an article about why people dislike being tournament reserves. If you have an opinion on being a tournament reserve, please drop him a PM and you might see your quote in the story. Thank you to all the readers.

Optimus Prime is back in organising by amazzony show
Optimus Prime (OP), admin of CC and a long time tournament organizer, is back after a short ban with his latest tournament: The CrackerJack Invitational . Lets see what he says about Olympics, sports and tournaments.Q: February is Olympics month, have you been caught in the madness? OP: The Olympics are always fun to watch, but I find that I gravitate towards certain events and don't really watch anything other than the ones I find interesting. With the winter olympics my favorites include short-track speedskating, luge, skeleton, bobsledding, and snowboard cross. Other than that, I don't really pay much attention. Most evenings lately the television has been on to NBC to watch in the background though so I have seen a few other things here and there.Q: You used to run quite a few sports tournaments... OP: That I did, and to this day they are still my favorite format of tournament to run. Maybe someday I'll have the time to run another one.Q: ...and then you stopped so suddenly running any kind of tournaments? OP: Yep, and I felt bad for leaving the last two tournaments hanging like I did, but duty called in other areas of the website. I only had so much time to dedicate to Conquer Club and all of it was taken doing my work as admin. I served my time on a tournament privileges ban though, just like anyone else, and that was probably a good thing in the end because it prevented me from stretching too far when I didn't have the ability to do so.Q: Why did you return? And why now? OP: I decided to return for a pretty simple reason. Serving as an admin on this website comes with its fair share of perks, but it also comes with a much greater share of frustration and stress. I rarely play games anymore and I had no chance to be involved with tournaments, which truly are the best thing about this site in my opinion. I reached a point where I needed to find a little bit of pleasure and fun in signing into the site each day again to combat the administrative details and hassles that come with the job. Running a tournament seemed like a good idea and my privileges ban just expired so the timing was pretty good too.Q: So, what's up with the tournament name - The CrackerJack Invitational? OP: If I ever have the chance to create a new clan it will be called the CrackerJack Coalition, so I decided to use the word in the title for this new tournament. If you look it up in the dictionary "crackerjack" means "a person or thing that shows marked ability or excellence." It seems rather fitting to me.Q: Now, a lot of organizers surely want to know this - what does a girl (or a guy) have to do to get you joining her/his tournament? OP: It takes a pretty willing organizer to get me into their tournament. I despise maps that feature anything other than standard gameplay (or something very close) and I absolutely hate fog of war and 1v1 games with unlimited fortifications. I also don't like having to play more than just a couple games at a time in a tournament, so that is a hindrance for a lot of them as well. If you want me to play in a tournament you'll have to meet my criteria, which seems pretty snobby, but that's the kind of games I like to play, and I'm sort of in a position where I can be very selective. Q: Finally, when will we see more tournaments from you? A: For now my goal is to run one at a time. The new tournament I just announced has just filled up so my plan is to run it and see how I feel when it is finished. If there every comes a day when I am no longer an admin I'm sure I'll jump back in a little more wholeheartedly though. Q: Thanks for your time and keep up the good work! OP: No problem.
Conquer Club Olympics by superkeener show
Conquer Club tournaments almost always showcase the world’s leading sporting leagues and events. With the 2010 Olympic Games underway in Vancouver, many tournaments have been created with Olympic themes. During the last Winter Olympics in 2006, Conquer Club was just over one month old so now marks the first time that the Winter Olympics have been rightfully celebrated on Conquer Club. We have the temporary Vancouver Olympic inspired design, and many tournaments, both large and small paying homage to the games.Winter Olympics - Vancouver 2010 Tupence has been running an Olympics tournament since March 2009. There have been 700+ games completed, and more are to follow. The tournament consists of many various mini-tournaments, each focusing on the different events. Currently New Zealand, lead by FTT is ahead in both points and medal count. However, much of the tournament has yet to be played.Olympic Tournament A massive tournament organized by Iron Maid is still underway. It started in July 2008 and there are games still underway that have been ongoing for almost as long. For example, Game 3250130 is currently in Round 666 with 3 players continuing to battle for Canada. This tournament is far from over, and may still be around when the 2012 games begin in London.2010 Olympic Ice Hockey Another “smaller” Olympic inspired tournament is lostatlimbo ’s 2010 Olympic Ice Hockey. 32 players are battling their way through 2 tryout rounds to qualify for the final Round-Robin round. Olympics Part 1: Citius Olympics Part 2: Altius Olympics Part 3: Fortius Amazzony ’s massive 3-part Olympics tournament was underway for almost 2 years. The final game was declared complete on February 8, 2010 with the first tournament of the trilogy being created late in February 2008. The winners of these three tournaments are merz , CandaVespin & bamage , and Linksniper , respectively.CC Olympics 2008 A special Clan Tournament organized by Night Strike also in July 2008 has recently finished. Clans faced each other in a variety of games, hosting “225 players in 1022 games over 14 different events.” The clan Legends of War took first place with Trouts and Legion rounding out the top three. The players who organized these tournaments should be appreciated for the amount of time they out in to executing these tournaments. Also, the players who win should be respected for winning such massive tournaments.
Hi all!
Here again with the latest news from the foundry. First of all we have to say goodbye to cairnswk. He has recently decided to retire from mapmaking after completing his 25th map. We all appreciate the great contribute given to the Foundry and we wish him a great future, hoping to see him a day come back with one of his tricky maps.
For this issue, after the news section, we have the last part of the foundry special by natty_dread. Also we have a nice interview with one of the most know mapmakers on Conquer Club by captainwalrus and then we move on to the History 101 article by dolomite13. To close, the map in development section to keep you updated about the maps currently in production.
Enjoy it!

Foundry Roll of Honour Medal Competition Our dear Foundry Foreman, Mr.Benn has announced a new competition. But this time, no maps. This competition is based on creating a set of non official medals for the forthcoming Foundry Roll of Honour, so you don't need to be an expert mapmakers or to have the skill of Leonardo da Vinci to participate. If you're interested in this competition, you can find further information here: viewtopic.php?f=467&t=109517 13 Colonies and Japan: beta-testing launched Two new and shiny maps have finally made it past the finish line and into the beta-testing phase. One is RedBaron0 's Japan , an outstanding medium-sized classical gameplay map featuring modern day Japan with the look and style of ancient Japanese art. The map has been in development for quite some time, and the hard work has now paid off. Conquer Club now finally has a map of Japan, and I for one predict that this map will become as popular among the general public as it has been among the foundry collective. The other map is Industrial Helix 's 13 colonies . The map takes place at the teen years of the nation of USA, the American revolutionary war. As the name implies, it features the 13 colonies that later grew to be USA, but also Native Americans, French and British navy, and a gameplay with some quirks. Many have been impatient to see this map in live play, and no wonder, seeing how it has been in development for a full year! Congratulations and a big hand to Industrial Helix and RedBaron0!Germany Revamp - Nahezu Fertig! The Germany map revamp , winner of one of the greatest graphics competitions that the foundry has ever seen, is finally available. With this new version the problem of many players to distinguish colors should be definitively resolved and probably this turbulent revamp is coming to a conclusion. Congratulations to WidowMakers for giving us this masterpiece. Rail Africa and Jamaica Quenched Other two maps quenched for the most decorated mapmaker on Conquer Club, cairnswk . The first one has delighted all the fans of the rail series. After just over a year after the onset of his last rail version, cairnswk has brought us the Rail Africa map. Slightly different from the previous versions in terms of graphics and gameplay, for many people the best one of the series. The other map, with a good historical accuracy, bring us in Jamaica , during the second half of 1600, during the colonization of the island and its utilization in terms of trade. After doing some small clarifications in the legend, the map was quenched.
Foundry Special - The Graphics Workshop by natty_dread show
Introduction So, in the last two articles we have covered the first two parts of the journey from ideas to live play. This time we will be focusing on the third part, the Graphics workshop. When a map arrives in the Graphics Workshop, it has already been through the Melting pot where it's Design Brief was evaluated and approved, via the Gameplay workshop where the Gameplay was honed to perfection, then finally awarded a Gameplay stamp and moved over... So a map at this point has a long road behind it already. Now that we know the map is playable, it is time to make it pretty.Artistic talent vs. pragmatic design The hardest part in designing the graphics for a map is maintaining the balance between making the map look good, and making it legible and easy to understand. In other words, the balance between esthetics and ergonomics. This is sometimes a precarious balance, as some mapmakers are highly artistic and, like most artists, are protective over their artistic creation. This may cause conflicts at times, and that is why mapmakers and commentators alike are encouraged to follow the feedback guidelines. Graphics: how to make them So what are the makings of good map graphics? On the subject, RedBaron0 , one of the moderators in charge of the Graphics workshop, says the following:RedBaron0 wrote: The key elements are pretty simple: Have an idea of how to use graphics software, and don't be afraid to screw things up with it.... little mistakes teach you so much more then perfection. You don't have to be an artist to make maps either. Make what you want at first, when it looks good to you, great! Then when you post your results, and I can't stress this enough, LISTEN to what others are saying about your image, they are all trying to help. Don't be afraid to try different things!
Which is right on the mark. There are other things to consider too, such as small/large images, army numbers, army circles and whether the map should have them, and last but not least: player friendliness. This means that all of the gameplay features of the map should be clear and easily understood just by looking at the map. If the mapmaker needs to explain any part of the gameplay, it is usually a sign of failure in this aspect. A lengthier explanation can be found in the graphics guidelines. How to help with graphics So, how does a regular person contribute to the development of map graphics? Here's what RedBaron0 says:RedBaron0 wrote: Not everyone can figure these programs out, they aren't made for the everyday user, that's for sure, BUT anyone can contribute to the construction of a map by commenting in the Foundry. The more descriptive you can be the better, but simple observations work just as well!
So once again, as in the previous forums, the answer is feedback. Commenting the graphics of maps in development is usually even easier than commenting the gameplay. You don't need to understand the dynamics of the game, all you need is to say what you think looks good and what doesn't. Briefly about Final Forge So, we have now covered all the major Foundry Forums except for the Final Forge . The Final Forge is mainly for making the last small tweaks, finetunes and polishing of the map, and of course the XML. So a separate article for it would be quite redundant. Just a small overview: when the map gets awarded the Graphics Stamp, it gets moved from the Graphics Workshop to the Final Forge. At this point the map already has a large and small image, and after the move an XML file will be made. The XML is a versatile database format which has many uses, but in CC use, the XML file contains all the technical information of the map. The XML turns a pretty image into a playable CC map. Since the XML Wizard by ChipV was released, making XML has become easy. So I will not go over that any further here, anyone interested in the technical nuances can take a peek at the Foundry Discussions forum , which contains many tutorials on XML:s, and of course the thread of the XML Wizard. After the XML is done, and all the final tweaks are done, the map goes to beta testing, where every member of CC can be a beta tester. Members playing on beta maps are strongly encouraged to comment on the map, since if any flaws or imbalances are found, this is the chance to get them fixed. Remember, don't just think that "someone else will report it anyway", because if everyone thinks so then nobody will... After the beta period, and any possible fixes, the map is of course quenched, and added to the Viewing Gallery among all the other CC maps that have made it through the Foundry process.Afterword This concludes the series of articles on the Foundry forums. I hope you have had as much fun reading as I have had writing it... The main agenda of my article was to provide a sort of documentary that explains in layman's terms how the Map Foundry works, but also to give regular persons some ideas how they too can influence the development of new maps. MapMaker Profile: Qwert by captainwalrus show
Mapmaker Profile: Qwert The mapmaker qwert is one of the greatest mapmakers that Conquer Club has ever seen. He designed many fine maps, from the massive WW2 Europe to the maddeningly difficult WW2 Ardennes. While hisis most famous for his World War Two maps, he is also the man behind the Imperium Romanum, Pellopanesian War and Europe 1914. While he has since retired from CC mapmaking, his maps are still some of the most popular maps on CC. Qwert, who contributed so much to conquer club through his maps, is the subject of our first Mapmaker Profile, a new interview section highlighting some of CC's greatest talent.Hi Qwert!
I'll start off with some personal questions, then we will move toward CC.
First, where do you live? Vojvodina-Serbia While it is not perfect, your English is pretty good for someone who does not speak it regularly. Where did you learn English? i learn from TV(english movies, series),also i learn here to write english(5500 writing post),ofcourse in begining, post had many mistakes, but now i belive that im reduce that. How old are you? (feel free not to answer, if you don't want )
im still young. What do you do outside of CC? (like job, school, hobbies) unemployment(like many other people in mine country) Do you find it difficult to make maps when there are more pressing issues, like paying for food, heat, and other things? Not realy-making maps not cost me nothing, and im from start living in country who have very big gray economy, also im work in agriculture(i own small part of land)-Vojvodina its one of most fertile land in Europe, and here you can produce all kind of food, so posibility for starvation its very low(except when workers go to starvating, when dont get salaries) How did you first get into mapmaking? For this,i need to find mine first interview from Foundry newsletter to answer. Where do you usually get your ideas for maps? I dont know, maybe because i like to read history.I know for sure that map Imerium Romanum,i start to create, because someon else start creating a map who is quite inacurate, and we have debate, that map with all provinces its not possible to create, and i manage to do,and its now, very good map of Roman empire. Have you ever thought of making a map of your home country, Serbia? yes, but Serbia shape go to much vertical. A lot of your maps are based on wars, mostly WW2 but a few others also, why is this? Well this is CC risk site,so probably its best to have much more historical maps, who people understand(or something like that),and for record, not all maps its based on war-Imperium romanum map,its based on Roman empire where whas in bigest size. Is there a large Roman influence in Seriba (like roman ruins or statues)? ofcourse, all serbia(except vojvodina) whas part of Roman Empire(provinces Moesia),Sirmium whas one of Capital sities in Roman empire, and In serbia give 12 or 17 Roman Emperors. Today you have many places who have Ruins or some artefact from Roman Era-Viminacium,Traian Tabula in Danube-Felix Romuliana-Sirmium(Today its call Sremska Mitrovica, and center of town its full of roman ruins, also they discover that belove had complete coloseum, and every time where worker dig to put new road,or repair something, they find parts of roman ruins). What is it about WW2 that made you want to make so many maps about it? Do you have any personal background with the war? Well mine country whas part of these War,and they had many celebrations, movies, songs, who had influence, so its normal that these is for me very good know part of history. How do you check for historical accuracy when making a War map? Wikipedia, have big database of WWII,also when i dont find something, then i go to google,to find appropriate site, who will give me more informacions, for maps. What first brought you to the map foundry? i dont remember What was the first map you tried to make? This is something what need to be check in abandoned forum. I searched your posts, and the first map you tried to make in the foundry was actually Europe 1914 , but it was an earlier attempt. I looked at the second map you tried, and it was WWII Eastern Front, and it is of course quenched. The next one you tried, while I couldn't find the image was Ancient Egypt. You never completed this one, but we do now have a few ancient Egypt maps. This pattern continues throughout your mapmaking career; you decide to make a map and, one way or another, it gets made. Why do you think it is that when you decide to make a map, it gets made, while other people might start five or six maps before they finally get one done? When I get an idea, I go forward to create a map, and do not stop until i do all the reaserch. Then i work on the right peice ( graphics or gameplay). The current process is not good; it is slowing down the process of building maps because it is the first based on the gameplay section, and then graphs, and I think this is wrong. Graphics and Gameplay must go part of the same speed or else the new map creators lose interest, because the gameplay part of the process is not something that attracts attention when a map is in the process of creating, and then the process of creating extends, as already seen in the forum. Each mine map, had the same process that involves the same speed as the creation of graphics and play, as can be seen in my future projects (maybe in the near future), as well as ACW ANTIETAM, or the Battle of Kursk. What it the relevance of your avatar? Do the pictures in the shied represent anything? nothing relevance. What map are you most proud to have made? Hard question, every map have something what its good.Maybe,Peloponnesian War map its one step ahead, because have best Graphic(its normal, every, mine next map have improved graphic). What are some of your favorite maps by other mapmakers? Hard question-well British issle its good playabile map. Graphicaly-Third crusade,8 thought,(but for more i need to look all maps) Which of your maps do you enjoy playing the most? Well, these can split in more sections. For quads, best map its WWII Europe. Single-best map its Peloponnesian war and Imperium Romanum. All other its good for 4 and higher number of players. If i want to play hard game, then Ardennes its for that, because mine score on this map its very negative. Which is more important (in your opinion); graphics or gameplay? Why? Bouth ofcourse. If you have good gameplay, you need to have great graphic, and i try to achive that.In Historical maps(what i create),in first place go graphic stage, and then i create gameplay and improving graphic. But its totaly wrong, create gameplay, and then to create graphic, this is mine oppinion. Thanks! note: some of the answers may have been changed slightly to make them easier to understand.
History 101 - Conquer Man by dolomite13 show
Conquer Man by WidowMakers & Coleman This map is the only Conquer Club map to feature animation. and is based on the most popular video game of all time. It maintains that nostalgic feeling of a 1980's video game and successfully integrates the game play of Conquer Club. Pac-Man Fever - by Buckner & Garcia wrote: I got a pocket full of quarters, and I'm headed to the arcade. I don't have a lot of money, but I'm bringing ev'rything I made. I've got a callus on my finger, and my shoulder's hurting too. I'm gonna eat them all up, just as soon as they turn blue.
Back in the spring of 1980 an arcade video game, created by Toru Iwatani of Namco, entitled Pukman was release in Japan. The game was licensed for distribution in the U.S. by Bally/Midway. After changing the name to Pac-Man in order to discourage vandals from replacing the P with an F. The game went on to become the most popular arcade game of all time, selling 100,000 units in America alone, breaking the previous 70,000 sales record set by Atari's Asteroids. Immensely popular from its original release to the present day, Pac-Man is universally considered as one of the classics of the medium, virtually synonymous with video games, and an icon of the 1980s popular culture. Upon its release, the game became a social phenomenon and the first video game to spawn a massive merchandising bonanza, with T-shirts, jackets, sweaters, coffee cups, stuffed dolls, bed sheets, cereal, board-games, books, towels...you name it, it had Pac-Man on it. It was also the first videogame to appear on both the cover of Time and Mad magazine. Buckner & Garcia, an obscure singer-songwriter duo, release Pac-Man Fever in 1981, and the title single went gold, making it all the way to #9, with the album ranking #46 for the year. A half-hour Hanna-Barbera Saturday morning cartoon show is produced by ABC in 1982. In 1983, a new series called The Pac-Man/Rubik, the Amazing Cube Hour is broadcast featuring new Pac-Man episodes, but our yellow star must now share the hour-long show with a walking, talking Rubik's Cube.Pac-Man Fever - by Buckner & Garcia wrote: I've got all the patterns down, up until the ninth key. I've got Speedy on my tail, and I know it's either him or me. So I'm heading out the back door and in the other side; Gonna eat the cherries up and take them all for a ride.
Ten arcade sequels followed the original game, first of which is Ms. Pac-man, released in 1982. It is developed in America by Midway. It sells 115,000 units, becoming the biggest American-made arcade hit yet, and Ms. Pac-Man machines still linger in some arcades today. The other sequels are Pac-Man Plus (1982), Super Pac-Man (1982), Baby Pac-Man (1982), Jr. Pac-Man (1983), Professor Pac-Man (1983), Pac & Pal (1983), Pac-Land, based heavily on the cartoon series (1984), Pac-Mania (1986), Pac-Attack/Pac-Land (1993/1994), and Pac-Man VR (1996). After the game's distinctive theme music plays, players find themselves guiding Pac-Man around a single maze eating dots, while avoiding the four ghosts Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde, who escape from a cage in the middle of the screen and will end our little yellow friend's life if they touch him. In each corner of the square playfield is a large dot that when eaten will turn the ghosts blue for a brief period, during which time the tables turn and Pac can eat the ghosts, leaving only the apparently indigestible eyes which make their way back to the cage for reincarnation into another ghost. During every screen a treat appears for the player under the ghost-cage, in the form of fruit or a bell or some other symbol waiting to be devoured. The game is deceptively simple, with only a four-position joystick needed to guide Pac-Man around the maze, but with each successive screen the ghosts get faster and their time of blue-invulnerability lessens. Tension is added with a steady whining sound effect that increases in pitch as the game is played. Pac-Man Fever - by Buckner & Garcia wrote: Now I've got them on the run, and I'm looking for the high score; So it's once around the block, And I'll slide back out the side door. I'm really cookin' now, eating everything in sight. All my money's gone, so I'll be back tomorow night.

AoD defeats BSS in the Largest Ever Clan Challenge by laughingcavalier (AoD) show
These are the stats: • Just a few games separate the two combatants as Angels of Death secure victory over Black Sheep Squadron • CC’s first and only 120-game clan war • With just 2 games left to play, AoD leads 62-56 • Angels of Death becomes the first clan to achieve 10 clan war victories. • A challenge for everyone: BSS fielded 41 of their 43 players, AoD 39 of their 41 • AoD’s winningest players included AgentSmith88 8-3, the mantis 5-2, Zander100 7-3, murphy16 7-3, gambler21210 11-5, dustin800 6-3, and mrpicklepepper 6-3 • Both clans are onto their next challenges and they are tough with Black Sheep taking on Nemesis and Angels of Death facing TOFU And here is the story in the words of some of the key participants:littlebrother2k7 wrote: 1st i offered jp 60 games, he replied lets go for the record, i replied lets double it then
jpcloet wrote: AoD were fighting their first clan war under the new name, and were looking for their 10th clan win in their history. A 10th clan win would make them the first to double-digit clan war wins in their rich history.
Gold Knight wrote: The 120 games came from the realization that both clans had near 50 members that were all active for the most part, and figured it was an attainable goal. All clans have those "go-to" players that they'd like to see in a lot of the games, but i feel both clans did a good job in getting a good distribution of their players involved.
hiddendragon wrote: When we created the BSS we looked for groups of players who played consistently with one another and instead of gathering individual players we tried to recruit teams of players. They are all valuable.
jpcloet wrote: Two of my favourite games were on a map that AOD doesn't play very much, being Supermax: Prison Riot. These 2 games really embody what AOD has going for it. You have a player with what would be considered quite a low rank, leading a team of higher ranks on a map none of them play regularly, nor do they play as a team on a regular basis. With good communication and thought out strategy, AOD executed the game and brought home both to victory in
Game 6263885 and
Game 6246287 . It's nice to be able to put any team together and know they can compete and is one of the many reasons I'm proud to help lead such a clan.

Game 6263874 was my favourite. Always enjoy winning on Arms Race.

Game 6374178 may be the best game I’ve ever played. Crosswords doubles with me and Mr Picklepepper vs the leaders of BSS, hiddendragon and littlebrother2k7. Im not a huge fan of the map, and Mr P was going through a very rough patch of dice, but the game turned out to be great - about 20 rounds of back-and-forth battling that had about average dice for both teams. And most games have been like this, none have been completely one-sided the whole way through. Just cant give BSS enough props.
HighlanderAttack wrote: It’s great being in BSS. The players are great-lots of CC friends created in our group.

Feature Clan War: IA vs. ID by By Georgerx7di (TSM) show
Last week I wrote a special edition article on the top 10 clans (see issue 25, Power Rankings). This week I have come back out to field of battle to discuss one of the top clan wars of 2009/2010 The Immortal Assassins vs. The Imperial Dragoons. But, for those of you who just want to skip right to the TSM vs. THOTA update, I put it first this time. TSM vs. THOTA Update: The third round of the clan war was won by THOTA 12-8; bring us to a 30-30 tie after 60 games. This clan war will be decided in the final 20 games. Final round games were launched on February 16. THOTA took an early lead in an arms race dubs, but TSM has a win coming on a conquerman quads, a map that THOTA considers one of its strongest. It will be a tight race to the end. You can follow all the action, and a little bit of drama, here: viewtopic.php?f=441&t=100282 Immortal Assassins vs. Imperial Dragoons: This clan war started off with a bit of hype, many of the usual clan fanatics and regulars posting gl and making predictions. IA started the challenge with a 3-1 record in clan wars with impressive wins over AOD and BPB, and only 1 loss to The Spanking Monkeys. However some from IA seem to have become disinterested as this clan wars has drug on. ahunda wrote: That being said, this challenge here has probably been hurt by the organisational mess surrounding it. We were supposed to be done last year, but the Dragoons were late in sending & joining games in almost every single set. Our last home set was supposed to start a week ago, and the Dragoons have just started to join these games last night. Because we had to re-schedule the entire challenge, what should have been a small, tight & tense 2 months battle, is now going into its 5th month. I guess, this has somewhat dampened the enthusiasm in the whole thing.
The Imperial Dragoons is one of the oldest clans on CC, they started taking sign ups in May of 2006. Let us remember that CC was created in January of 2006. To give a better understanding, THOTA, LOW and some of the other top clans didn’t start until 2007, and most of the top clans on the site were started in 2008 and later. The Dragoons have long been considered a top clan. They have a 3-3 clan war record, but that includes a 53-47 loss to THOTA that was originally a tie until the clan war was extended, along with losses to two other top clans. They are currently in a dead heat with IA, one of the top clans on CC in the opinion of many, (see conquerors cup seeding and my top 10 in issue 25) in their clan war. Their CLA performance is a modest 41-44 good for 4th place in their division. So what is happening to the Dragoons now? Why are they having these organizational problems? When questioned about these problems in organizing games for their clan wars, the Dragoon’s leader had this to say. hwhrhett wrote: we were late, we had someone go awol for a week. real life happens sometimes. it was unfortunate, but we worked together to get it sorted despite any bickering between us in the challenge thread.
The Dragoons were very upfront about what happened, but cautioned others not to exaggerate the extent of the delays. It would appear that Lord Voldemort was organizing games, but then was distracted by that one thing that can destroy any top players CC career, real life. The Dragoons did get things back in order and the clan war is on and in full swing. The current score is 19-18 out of a total of 42 games, with the Dragoons leading. There are only 5 active games left to decide this extremely close war. Follow this close finish here: viewtopic.php?f=441&t=97750 Note, the first page is not up to date. I have an updated post for any who wish to see it on page 6 of the challenge thread. Will the Immortal Assassins prove that I was right to for ranking them 4th overall, or will CC’s oldest clan prove that they still have the goods? Here are the final 5 games, Dragoons need to win 2 for a tie or 3 for the win, IA needs 3 to tie or 4 to win. In case of a tie, there will be a 13 game tie breaker.
