Dispatch Mini Issue The Annual Risk Classic Remember the days of sitting around the kitchen table with your parents, brothers, sisters, friends, aunts, uncles, cousins, and playing a good old-fashioned board game? It was a time of laughter, togetherness, sharing, growing, discovery, and camaraderie. My favorite game as a kid was RISK. My father taught me how to play when I was eight years old and I have been a die-hard RISK nut ever since. The game taught me patience and how to win and lose graciously, not to mention math and geography. But, how often do we do that anymore? With the advent of the computer age and electronic gaming, it seems as though the board game is slowly becoming a relic. Unfortunately, not only is the enjoyment of playing the game itself lost, but also the valuable time shared with those closest to you. Additionally, in today’s fast paced world, it just seems to be so difficult to simply find three hours to set aside to play a game of RISK. The Annual RISK Classic has been established to help keep the tradition of family and fun alive. Run by a staff with over 70 years of collective tournament experience, we present the Annual RISK Classic, a competitive RISK tournament that welcomes players of all ages and backgrounds who simply love to play the game of RISK. The environment at our tournament is one of friendship, family, and spirited gamesmanship. So, come and test your skills against some of the best RISK players in the world and perhaps you could walk away the champion. Carter Ruth (Risk Classic Website)
So here it is guys and gals. This new tournament takes some of the great classic elements you love and adds a twist! show: Interview With Steelhorse
Hi Steelhorse, Thanks for agreeing to take part in this interview! Where did the idea come from? -I have been involved in running previous RISK tournaments for about 10 years. The tournament I was involved in went belly up a couple years ago, and I was asked by many of its' participants if I would be willing to begin a new RISK tournament tradition. So, after a lot of thought, I decided to go for it. How did you get involved with the Risk Classic? -I didn't really have a choice. Being the Tournament Director required it...lol. But, I have always loved the game of RISK. I've been playing it since the age of 10, and been addicted to it ever since. And, I know there are so many other RISK die-hard's out there, so I thought it was something that I could do that a lot of people would enjoy and look forward to on a yearly basis. How Much work has been put in to make it happen? -Let's just say, countless hours of thought have gone into this. I knew a lot went in to running the tournament, but it's been more than I thought it would be. But, that is mainly because it is the first year. Things will get easier as the years go on. Fortunately, I have great team members that have been helping me get all the necessary details done, so that I can focus on other things to prepare. I really have a great staff...without them, I would be lost and this tourney would never happen. We have been getting together for meetings about once every 2-3 months for the past year in preparation, so the time they have devoted to this has been invaluable. Whats it like running tourneys in real life, rather than CC? -It's a blast, but a lot of work and time. But, I really enjoy the spirited competitiveness of live tournaments. And, it's great to meet new people and watch them leave the weekend feeling like they had a great time and looking forward to it again next year. All the stress and effort that goes into it pays off when it's all over. Then, it's time to think about next year. Any chance we might see some tournaments in other countries? -I would love to eventually run tournaments all over...especially in Europe, Canada, adn other countries as the demand evolves. Truthfully though, this is quite a financial expenditure. I will have to wait till the tournament is in a position to finance events on foreign soil. But, my goal is to someday hold Satellite events all over the country and/or world all leading up to the World Championship of RISK, similar to the World Series of Poker, in Vegas. But, that dream is a ways off. But, I know that as time moves on, this will continue to grow to the point where someday something like that may be very possible...perhaps a few years. Anything Else We Might need to know? -I don't think so. That pretty much covers it. If anyone is interested in playing in this year's tourney, there are still seats available. They can check out the website and register at http://www.annualriskclassic.com Thanks Steelhorse!
Next in this special dispatch edition,
rdsrds2120 has kindly consented to write us a special article on the History of risk, and here it is.
History of Risk by rdsrds2120 show: History Of Risk
As we spawn our games, gawk at maps, and contemplate settings - most of us forget the roots of the game that probably encouraged you to join ConquerClub. Yes, the game I'm talking about is none other than RISK. I'm here to take us back a bit and to go over a quick review of the history or RISK. First, let's start with the company that manufactures and distributes RISK, Hasbro:Wiki on Hasbro wrote: In 1923, two brothers—Henry and Helal Hassenfeld—founded Hassenfeld Brothers, a textile remnant company in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey. Over the next two decades, the company expanded to produce pencil cases and school supplies. In the 1940s, Hassenfeld Brothers produced doctor and nurse kits, its first toys. Hassenfeld Brothers' first toy hit was Mr. Potato Head, which the company purchased from inventor George Lerner in 1952. The toy was a smash success. In 1964, Hassenfeld Brothers produced the G.I. Joe toy, which they termed an "action figure" in order to market the toy to boys who wouldn't want to play with "dolls." The company shortened its name to Hasbro Industries in 1968. The company's promotional efforts included the catchphrase "Boy Oh Boy! It's A Hasbro Toy!" in television commercials and prints ads. In 1983, Hasbro produced another successful toy franchise, My Little Pony. The company acquired the Milton Bradley Company in 1984, bringing The Game of Life, Candy Land, Twister, Chutes and Ladders and Yahtzee into the Hasbro fold, and found continued success in 1984 with the release of the first Transformers toys. The Transformers Jumpstarters toys were the subject of a lawsuit by Hasbro in 1985 where they sued a toy manufacturer for selling toys based on their design. Hasbro won the suit. In 1985 CBS Toys (including the Sesame Street Child Guidance label) was purchased. In 1986, Hasbro acquired Playskool, which purchased Mr. Potato Head from Hasbro that year. Parker Brothers was purchased by Hasbro in 1991, and with it Monopoly, the most successful commercial board game of all time. A variety of knockoff Jumpstarters, a variety of Transformers Hasbro, Inc. is now the parent company of several subsidiaries. The toys and games produced by these companies retain their brand identity, which is an important advertising consideration. Many of Hasbro's games have been around so long that they have entered into popular culture. In 1998 Hasbro bought Avalon Hill for $6 million and in 1999 Wizards of the Coast was bought in a deal worth $325 million. Wizards of the Coast is now a subsidiary of Hasbro and has Avalon Hill as its division. In 2001 money-losing Hasbro Interactive, a subsidiary formed in 1995, was sold to French software concern Infogrames for $100 million.
Hasbro, one of the largest toy companies in the world, has certainly made some noteworthy contributions - but we're going to focus on our favorite! RISK:Wikipedia wrote: Risk is a strategic board game, produced by Parker Brothers (now a division of Hasbro). It was invented by French film director Albert Lamorisse and originally released in 1957, as La Conquête du Monde ("The Conquest of the World"), in France.
Leave it to the French to develop a war game However, on a more serious note, we can find that RISK has a history dating back to the early 1950's, as About.com reports:About.com wrote: 1950s - Parker Brothers forms an affiliation with the Miro Company in France.
1957 - A representative of Miro approaches Parker Brothers with La Conquete du Monde (French for "The Conquest of the World"), a game designed by Albert Lamorisse. Lamorisse (a movie writer and director best known for The Red Balloon) and Micheal I. Levin are co-credited with the game design at BoardGameGeek.com.
1959 - Parker Brothers first publishes the Risk Continental Game in the United States.
1986 - The game Castle Risk (played on a map of Europe) is published.
1993 - The rules for Secret Mission Risk, which had been a variant in Europe, are added to the United States edition.
1999 - A limited edition of Risk is published in France, as 10,000 copies of Risk Edition Napoleon are released. An expansion in 2000 added the Ottoman Empire.
2001 - Risk players can now conquer the moon and underwater territories with Risk 2210 AD.
2002 - Risk moves to Middle-earth with the release of Lord of the Rings Risk.
2003 - Risk travels deeper into Middle-earth with the Lord of the Rings Trilogy Edition.
2004 - Risk: Godstorm is published, injecting mythology into the game of world domination.
2005 - Risk: Star Wars - The Clone Wars Edition is published in concert with the release of the third Star Wars prequel, Revenge of the Sith.
2006 - Risk: Star Wars - Original Trilogy Edition is published. The game features three factions, each with its own victory conditions.
2008 - A new basic edition of Risk is published by Hasbro.
(Original Article) Quite a timeline! As you may notice, RISK has had quite an upbringing - with roots in America, France, and early development in the 50's. Possibly one of the most dynamic board games, RISK is not reported to have a decline in popularity, and has recently released Risk Factions, a game you can acquire through XBox live. So, as we battle through our games on CC, let's not forget to take a step back and view some of the history of the mighty game that inspired this site. For those of you attending the Annual Risk Classic, let's take this for what it's worth and be informed of the game you'll be fighting on while representing ConquerClub at the same time! show: Godd
Real Name? -Todd From? -The Chicago area How to spot him? -The old man with all his hair still! Why Did you join CC? -While playing on a different risk site, someone here was spamming the games with the CC site web page info. Took me a month or 2 till I finally checked the web address to find you all. Once I visited this site I was hooked. What made you want to play risk? -Want to play risk? if you go back to early childhood days it be found that as with all kids the game being there with others to play with on it. I may think it was one of my older siblings game left as a hand-me-down (course the game then had pieces made from wooden cubes) How much of a strategy badass are you? -I would not say badass per say, but with the circle of friends I play now on the board game I am their first target they will gang up on so they stand a chance to get a win over me. Who is going to win the Risk Classic Tourney? -Optimistically I would say it will be a battle. But if I am not the winner I would say RedBaron0 will stand to be the best choice after me (besides he is one you have to actually look up to in Real Life) Do you plan to meet other users who you have met before there? -I am sure I will. I met a few last time there, RedBaron0, Steelhorse, and very briefly happy2seeyou Who are you most scared/looking forward to meeting at the Tourny. -Not scared of anyone no matter how good one might be. will be looking forward to seeing all (even the young Gilligan) Any other stuff you think we should Know? -My CC name was a (late night in the dark) misspelling of my first name but after that I kept it (kinda fitting I think for a good laugh). -In Real Life I am working with High Energy Particles in the Particle Physics realm. -I love to play the game and always looking for a grand time playing. I was at the tourney 2 years ago and fell short of the finals by not figuring out that the player that played after my turn was going to suicide so he could go home. -back in the 70's I beat the two chess team champions of my HS while playing them both simultaneously on the very same turns -In 1990 I was a member of the winning team in the world championship paintball tournament -a several years ago I had one of the particle detectors I worked on for years launched into space by NASA -I am a Dad and married -I have surpassed the 30 year mark at the same employment place Godd
show: bristow47
Real Name? -Kim Pane From? -N.E P.A How to spot her? -You can spot me b/c I'm guessing I will be one of the few girls, but who knows... So whats your CC history? -I joined CC because one of my friends was talking about how much fun the game Risk was. He played on his computer with a software title, but not with other "real" players. I did a web search for a similar game and ended up on CC. I like the fact that you play against other people rather than a computer generated general. Where does your CC Alias come from? -My alias actually comes from "Alias" - bristow is the last name of the main character, Sydney Bristow and her SpyDaddy. The number 47 is a big part of the "lore" in that show. I thought that having a name like that would signify that I was a girl {Doesn't seem to}, draw another viewer of the show {Haven't met one, lol}, and signify spy badass-ery {also questionable }. How much of a strategy badass are you? -I wish I were more of a strategy badass but I'm working on it. I'm going with the humble, "aw shucks" attitude and seeing if I go farther than being "I'm so badass you don't want to even try to play me" Hahaha. Why are you coming to The Annual Risk Classic? -I'm coming to Risk Classic because it's close to where I live and I used to live in Bethlehem and still have tons of friends there. I am psyched to put some faces with names and play the game on a board rather than on the computer. Anything else we need to know? -I'm female and I am the business manager of a busy veterinary clinic in Northeast Pennsylvania. -I signed up to be a Flagbearer b/c I thought it would be fun, but I was actually surprised to be chosen. -My twitter name is 80Nuggets. I will tweet from there about the tourney. So follow if you wish... The tweets can be found at http://twitter.com/80Nuggets Bristow47
show: cpurcell
Real Name? -Corey Purcell From? -WhiteHall P.A How to spot him? -You'll be able to recognize me at the tourney by finding a 6'1" male with short light brown hair, and a "risk happens" CC t-shirt (thanks Andy!!!). So Whats Your CC History? -I first discovered CC while searching for local risk tournaments online. I stumbled onto the Risk TOC site, which directed me to CC. I signed up and began playing right away, but never actually made it to a risk tournament until now. After playing for a while, I grew curious about clans and started looking for one that was recruiting. My first clan membership was to the AoD (Army of Darkness), which lasted for a short while, and then I found my way to Nemesis. After joining up with KingDainII, I met my new CC family, and began playing team games much more frequently than ever before. After KingDainII went inactive, the clan almost fell apart. Some were too impatient to wait for a new leader to be appointed, and left. Others waited patiently, and pretty soon, myself and Stroop were elected as leaders of Nemesis. We later added HA as leader, but with HA on leave now, most of the credit should go to Pmchugh and Freakns who have both acted as war coordinators recently. To me, clans are the most interesting part of CC, and the main reason that I stay active on CC. Why did you sign up for the Tournament? -I decided to sign up as a CC flagbearer because I saw it as an awesome excuse to be able to play in a risk tournament. I must admit that I was also influenced by the incentives (free T-shirt and 3 months premium), but I really just thought it would be cool to finally play risk with people who knew what they were doing! Who is going to win the CC Tourney? -Hopefully someone who deserves it. It would be nice if it was me though... Do you plan to meet other users who you have met before there? -I hope to meet other users. I think it will be an awesome opportunity to befriend other serious CC players. Who are you most scared/looking forward to meeting at the Tourney? -Unfortunately I don't have any CC experience with any of the other users attending the tourney, but I'm looking forward to meeting them all! ---C

Real Name? -Erwin From? -Philadelphia P.A How to spot him? - Male. -I’ll be the only guy there using a slide rule to plan out my turns. (no not really) Other than the CC shirt, I’ll be a guy telling people about how great CC is. Why Did you join CC? -To play risk-esque turn-based strategy games. What made you want to play risk? -When I was a kid I really enjoyed Risk, but always had difficulty finding people to sit down and play. When my friend told me about CC I joined immediately. How much of a strategy badass are you? -My rank speaks for itself. I’m still learning (having played less than 200 games on/offline) and improving, but I feel I have a good sense of what’s going on in my games. I’m kind of big on the numbers and tend to play by them. I like knowing the odds of various outcomes. It’s good because I tend make better decisions, but also quite frustrating when an opponent “beats the odds”. Why are you coming to the risk classic and what made you want to sign up to be a CC Flag bearer? -I want CC to become “the industry standard” of risk-esque turn-based strategy games. I think one great way to move towards that is to tell people about CC. Seems logical to tell people who already like Risk about the “greener pastures” waiting for them at CC … Who is going to win the CC Tourney? -If not myself, one of the other CC flag bearers (Actually, I give this ~90% chance) (yes, this number was pulled out of thin air)(no, you should not believe it) Who are you most scared/looking forward to meeting at the Tourney? -I’m presently not scared to meet anyone at the tourney. But now that you ask the question, I think I’ll go back and make my personal information a bit more vague, lol -As far as people I’m looking forward to meeting, I’m not really sure who is attending other than my fellow flag bearers. Let’s leave it at, I look forward to being presently surprised by who attends. Anything Else? -I have a twitter account that I will be using to post about the games I’m in. http://www.twitter.com/ErwinPasteur Feel free to check it out, follow, etc. Flow520
show: Gilligan
Real Name? -Nick From? -New England How to spot him? -Umm...The dude with glasses? I would say the guy with the wannabe afro, but I'm getting a haircut soon. So I guess I can just say I'm the guy with the short hair? There's not many distinguishing features of myself! Why Did you join CC? -A friend showed me this site 4 and a half years ago, and have been here ever since. How much of a strategy badass are you? -My rank has gone down as I'm playing a wide variety of game types, but I was once a colonel. I've also authored two strategy guides with one more in the works. Who are you in real life? -I'm currently a student in college and I work as a shoe salesman. I like playing Pickleball (Go Google it!), bowling and board games. (or if you're too lazy http://tinyurl.com/29e5ar2 ) Why you are coming to the risk classic and what made you want to sign up to be a CC Flagbearer. -Steelhorse is a good friend of mine here on CC, and I've been wanting to get down there and meet a bunch of other people from CC as well. It'd also be nice to take a weekend road trip down to PA and see what it has to offer. I bear for CC cause I loves it! Who is going to win the CC Tourney? -Me! Do you plan to meet other users who you have met before there? -I've only met three CCers before, one of which is my buddy BarBar (RedBaron0 )so I'll be seeing him there. Who are you most scared/looking forward to meeting at the Tourny. -I'm looking forward to meeting Steelhorse. Who am I afraid of? I dunno...I'll see when I get there! Anything Else? -I don't know of anything else to add... Gilligan
show: Redbaron0
Real Name? -Mike From? -Boyertown P.A How to spot him? -i'm likely going to be one of the tallest people there at 6'4"(1.93 m for your European readers... haha) a guess a photo would help... and yes, I'm definitely that SMRT. Summer of 2007 Why Did You First Start Playing Risk? -I've always loved playing board games, my first year as a Boy Scout when I was 10 we had a winter camping trip in a cabin where Risk was being played. I was soundly defeated that weekend, but I was hooked for life. How Much Of a Strategy Badass are you? -Well I like to think my strategy is very sound, honed now through almost 3000 completed games here at CC. I have my quirks and tendencies, ask my clan mates in G1... lol, but I'll keep them all to myself for now, lest my opponents at the Tournament gain an advantage on me! Who is going to win the risk classic? -Me. Who are you most scared/looking forward to meeting at the Tourney? -I'll be glad to see my clan mates like Gilligan again, and a few others I met at the last RTOC. I fear no one. Anything else we should know? -I'm Happily married for 6 years now, no kids -Unhappily employed for WalMart... but employed is better than the alternative. Searching for work as a science teacher at the secondary level (high school or middle school) working here and there as a per diem substitute teacher. -Would you like my blood type while you're at it? (O+) RedBaron0
So there we have it folks the end of our little Mini-Edition for the Annual Risk Classic. But the fun doesn't stop here, you can still sign up for the Annual Risk Tournament on the website
http://www.annualriskclassic.com and who knows, you could be the next winner...
