Welcome Comrades to the 42nd edition of the Dispatch
This issue we talk to more players than you can throw 6s on an average dice day.
In the main interview, the irrepressible
eddie2 overcomes a forum ban to give us some good advice on how to spend our time. He talks straight does eddie, you'll enjoy this.
The prolific
HighlanderAttack is in the news right now for his mega-massive 200th Tourney where he plays host to an astoning 2000+ players. We spoke to him when that was just a plan and he had recorded his own 163rd tourney win.
dowian2 tells us what it's like to play and win tourneys.
Tisha may be the first mapmaker to deliver one of the new massively mega-pixelled giant-size maps. She claims graphics are her thing - I say she's pretty darn good at strategy too.
chemefreak and
Shaneback tell us their ambitions as they join Team CC to round out the clan directors team, and
Incandenza tells us to get cheering for our clans in the Conquerors Cup final.
All this plus authoritative reviews of this month's Conquer Club highlights - reviews of the must-see 5th anniversary videos, updates on changes in the Foundry, mafia games, clan competitions ...

nagerous A 5th Anniversary Video Contest - Review by nagerous show
If an awesome weekend of Battle Royale games was not enough for you, in celebration of the 5th anniversary of Conquer Club, the entertainment team also decided to host a video contest, which any CCer could enter. For first place was the prize of a $50 amazon.com gift certificate and a years premium membership. For second place was a prize of 1 item from the CC shop and nine months premium membership and for third place was six months premium membership. So with these amazing prizes up for grabs there surely should be tons of people entering right? Well, uh… there were a grand total of 5 entrants! I have watched and reviewed all five of these and picked out my personal favourite in the below article. However, which one will win is ultimately up to the general public. At the time of publication option E has a commanding lead but can B or C narrow this gap before the competition closes? Option A – an entry by Black_Berry What impressed me about this entry was it was a unique and brave attempt from one of our younger CCers to demonstrate the finer points of how to play RISK (careful now let’s not having another law suit) online. In the video the young lad shows us how to set up a game, how to leave ratings and where to go to buy premium membership. We are also briefly taken into the realms of live chat. One criticism of the video is that it was a little on the long side. Also, some of the facts that the author states were incorrect such as when he stated that the gameplay rating was that “he had played all the games” and also when he stated that three cards of the same colour in flat rate will receive you 6 troops when it is actually dependent on the colour Nevertheless for this courageous attempt at a video I will give him a 7/10 score.Option B – an entry by Victor Sullivan A more classical entry here from Victor Sullivan with a video touring us around Conquer Club and sharing what makes this site so great. Cheesy ‘80s music aside, this video gives us a very decent all-round display of the website, its history, the forums and the games and gets bonus marks from me at least for the personal reference even if it is me getting viciously slain in the midst of a game. The video is also a little on the long side and there are moments where the text is a little bright for sensitive eyes! Nevertheless a very enjoyable video and I will award it a 7.5/10 score.Option C – an entry by Fircoal Another very unique idea here, a song about Conquer Club sung by CC’s resident Pikachu. A lot of effort has clearly been put towards producing this song and the song is also quite catchy too. If I were to criticise it as an effort I would say that the video of just displaying maps is slightly boring and more could certainly have been done with that. Nevertheless I am going to give an 8/10 for this effort. Option D – an entry by CJ Lues Similar in style to Victor Sullivan’s video, we are taken on a tour of Conquer Club. This time we are told a little more about its roots with the board game. We are also shown where to find the instructions for those new members who want to learn the ropes. There is also an amusing scene involving a battle with the dice on world 2.1. I would criticise this attempt however for the large amount of black screen and also for the fuzziness of the text, which often makes it hard to read if you don’t squint. Overall I will give this a 6.5/10. Option E – an entry by Black_Knight6 An entertaining portrayal of the clan war between TOFU and T4C, upon watching this video you will find a classic scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail in German with an amusing commentary in sub-titles. Some of the more classic lines when we seeT4C and the Black Knight lose their arms and legs in the battle but refuse to give in include “Poison Rome? Who plays on that map?” and “Auto assault! Auto assault!” For this video I will give a rating of 7.5/10 Look out for announcements however in the next couple of days as to who the winner is!

The Scum Insider Newbie Help Want to get into the Mafia scene, but don't know how to play or even what it is? Consult these threads: Mafia Information , Mafia and You , and Rules and Terms of Mafia . Too much work? Too lazy to read through everything? No worries, you can always jump right into a game and ask for other players or the game runner to help guide you. What is "Mafia"? Mafia, for those of you that don't know, is a game that generally takes place in a town, where the townspeople have to determine who the mafia (or "scum") is and lynch them via a majority vote during the day and the mafia try to kill everyone at night and bluff their way out of getting killed by the town.Mafia News Sadly, it seems activity has been slow lately, and the demand for new players is even higher, as the same old players makes for a dull re-hash of previous games. There was a rumor about a mafia threat when we all first got here yesterday, but we thought it foolish to starting pointing fingers on little basis, since supposedly no one knew anyone else. I thought the island to be a place of opportunity when I came, but apparently the mafia felt the same... Q. Good Afternoon eddie! Q. What is your favorite snack to eat while playing CC? Do crumbs get stuck in your keyboard disabling the use of your apostrophe key? Damn Cheese Nips... A. Strawberries soaked in vodka Q. Why the number 2 behind your name? Do you think it is a superior number, or is it something the hunters should know? A. Eddie would not work so I put eddie2. Also I get asked how many of us there are all the time so far eddie666 Q. Who is your favorite CC persona (you cannnot answer yourself)? A. Favourite players on site must be jmarcotte and far2ezee this is because I have played with these 2 since I started on cc Q. Of all the recently formed clans (t4c, osa, koa, aka, ra, the pack, 1st Regiment of Foot Guards) who do you think will be the most successful and why? A. I will break this down individually: T4C = should do quite well good group of players. osa = can't really comment till they have played a challenge but look ok. KOA= I should not really comment on this AKA= will be no 1 clan. RA= good group of players should go well. the pack= looks like a good group think they made a mistake facing KOA hope it has not ruined there clans chances of future challenges. 1st Regiment of Foot Guards= this clan should do well but are not realy a new clan they have been together for some time as a inactive clan playing lots of games together Q. Do you care how people perceive you? A. Not really if you know me you would understand I like to have a wind up. Q. How much like real life are you on here? A. Nothing in real life I am am easy going person that does not like people taking the piss. A.Most of the clan I fit in to most teams without any hassle. Q. What settings do you prefer - 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4? A. Any dont bother me though only thing i dont like is freestyle speed because my internet is crap. Q. What is your favourite map? A. Have a guess. Q.Who is your favourite Mod? A. lol the site only has a handful of decent mods. evil semp clapper011 eye84free most live chat hosts minus 1 all the tech guys. sug guys. there is one cant remember his name but he is a right arse. he works for the newsletter and is a entertainment and live chat mod whats his name again wait. ahhh thats it nagerious. (editors note: OI! ) Q. How are you finding your ban? A. Don't really bother me. Q. Are you guilty or remorseful for your actions that led to the ban? A. remorseful for what i asked in a challenge thread why they did not update it. there was no flame or bait involved with it and on looking at it. i can see that the pack had asked a couple of times for this to happen. So in effect i got banned for the clan mods inability to tell them to follow priv rules and update it. my post was 1 week after the games had changed hands and 2 days before aka's challenge was due to start via the pack. so i needed the info for decideing the maps to use. (editors note: ok... I guess) Thanks for answering the questions eddie2!

Tournament Executive TPA UPDATE by jrh_cardinal show: TPA Update
The time is ripe for another update on the Tournament Players Association (TPA) . To start things off, there has been a change at the number one spot on the Scoreboard . Sonicsteve (16.62 points) has recently passed HighlanderAttack (13.73), who now sits in third place, and Bones2484 (14.01), who has remained in second. These three players are still currently in line for the three General Achievement Medals that will be handed out at the end of the year, but jrh_cardinal (13.29), danryan (11.77), MudPuppy (11.73), phantomzero (11.73), and many other players are still in contention for the grand prize. Look for the new TPA sanctioned tournament every Monday. Recently, the third of four TPA Major Events started, Termination: British Isles run by amazzony and Hath . The tournament this week will be a singles format run by Darin44 , go to the Create/Join a Tournament forum to sign up before it's too late.
Meet the Tournament Winners! by Dukasaur Our first talk is with
dowian2 , the winner of the
Travelling the World with my Friends? tournament, organized by
ralphcptc . This tourney ran from July 12th 2010 to January 2nd 2011, and was a
TPA event. It featured an interesting format where players started out in Quad teams, which then had to split into two Dubs teams, and later split again into singles for the finale.
show: Interview with Dowian2
Okay, we'll start with my standard Question 1, and then we see how the conversation goes from there: What attracted you to this particular tournament? A couple of reasons, actually. First of all, I've been trying to keep my eye out for interesting TPA events. As a regular tournament player, the TPA has been a fun way to experience a few new types of games in a competitive setting. Secondly, it was an opportunity to play with some new players... I'd been in some team games with one of my teammates, slowreactor, before, but never with Denise or netspyman. Because of this (at least in part), I've joined their awesome clan so we can keep winning games together! This was an interesting format, with people starting as a team and then splitting up. How did you make the decision when it was time to spit the Quad into Doubles? My teammates left it up to me to split it as I saw fit. Since I had the most experience playing with slow, I put the two of us together. You now have 35 tournaments to your credit. Are they starting to become routine? Never routine. I always focus a bit more when it gets down to the semifinals and finals of a tournament. That said, some tournaments (like my two TPA wins, flex's NFL 1v1 2009 Season, and bart's Championship Series: 100th Celebration) mean a bit more. What made those memorable? (Just from the titles I'm guessing they were large tournaments with many games required, but I don't want to make unwarranted assumptions.) The two TPA wins because they were bigger tournaments, and the TPA added a little something extra. This one (Traveling the World with my Friends?) was also fun due to meeting my new teammates and working together... for awhile. Bart's Championship Series was memorable because it was a huge tourney, and a celebration of all of the hard work bart's done in creating tournaments. Flex's NFL Season was the tourney that got me hooked on tournaments, though - creative, well run tournament. If you haven't played in one of flex's sports-themed tourneys, I highly recommend them.I noticed the line on your wall, "If you want to play a game where luck isn't a factor, go play chess." I take it you like the random element, and the surprises it brings? Honestly, that's not really it at all. I'm just sick of listening to people complain about dice! Lol, I know. Although I think we've all done it at some point. Do you prefer the team games or the solo efforts? I like a mixture. I'd get bored if I only played one type of game. You mentioned at the beginning that you focus more when it gets down to the final. Is there some advice you could give to someone who's never won a tournament? Is there a psychology to it? Can you do better if you're really passionate about it, or does too much intensity lead to mistakes? Not really intensity, just focus. If it's a foggy game, get BOB and take snaps. Take a little more time with your moves. Consider what your next move would be for the other player(s) so you're ready to counter it. Etc, etc, etc. Also, try to avoid playing me. I'm sure some people will see that as a challenge... What are your CC goals for the future? My short-term goal is to win our upcoming clan war against TSM. Beyond that, I don't really set long-term CC goals... I just try to play games I enjoy and win them. Well, I wish you plenty more enjoying and plenty more winning! I've enjoyed our chat. Thank you very much for your time.
Highlander Attack won the
2010 CC Nuclear Championship , a tournament originally begun by dr. lucas and rescued by
Kinnison . This tournament pitted 24 players against each other, using maps of their choice. The common theme was that all games were nuclear, manual deployment, and foggy.
(I originally conducted the interview with Highlander Attack early in January. At that time, his famous 200th tourney, which he mentions here, was still in the future.)
show: Interview with Highlander Attack
Congrats on your victory in the Nuclear Championship. What features attracted you to this tournament? I always like to join 1v1 tourneys. dr.lucas was also becoming one of the better new tourney organizers (until he just abandoned them all. Luckily rescuers saved them and this was one of them.)I noticed that there is a huge list of tournaments to be rescued. Are you in favour of setting a limit to how many tournaments someone can run at once? There was a big discussion about this when dr.lucas left and abandoned 17 tourneys at one time. Mostly it is not an issue. I could go on for pages with this question. but here is what I am in favor of: New TO's have a limit for the first six months to ten tourneys ongoing at one time. More stringent policies to abandoning are put into place if you abandon. Since it is not a major issue and you have so many TO's step up to the plate to help rescue -no changes are necessary for now-but the above is what I would be in favor of. I also think a rescue should get a special medal since the rescuer is spending his/her time fixing another player's issue.I notice you have 30 tournament cups, which is the most the system will record, so presumably you have won more than that. How many tournaments have you won in total? 163 total tourney winsWow, that's pretty damn impressive. Besides 163 trophies, there's a tremendous number of tournaments that you're organizing, as well as a vast array of other achievements: Gold medals in almost every category, Silver in the rest, clan wars, general achievement awards, a high points rank. What's left? What are your CC goals? For now I have not made too many goals for 2011--but here they are: Win 100 tourneys in 2011-which would be less than last year Run my 200th tourney--make it a really large one (coming Jan 19th)-my two year anniversary of running tourneys. When I get a new PC--learn and master freestyle If time ever permits--break the most active games at one time record which I started at 1250--but it has been broken--but break it without dropping below lieutenant-and without missing any turns. (not sure if I will find the time this year though) Not much else--I just like winning tourneys and the competitiveness of them.Any way you slice it, those are some pretty big goals, and you make them sound easy. Okay, one final question: What would you say to someone like me who's about to launch his first tournament. What is the most important thing that makes a tournament rise above the crowd and be memorable? If you are going to go with your first tourney--I say make it a simple 1v1 bracket tourney 16>8>4>2--so you can get used to how a tourney works. Read the Tournament Handbook so you can properly post and understand things about running a tourney. Ask advice if you have questions--many TO's will help including me. After you feel comfortable expand your tourneys to something that you mind thinks would be a good tourney. Just don't go too big too early--let players learn who you are and who them you run a professional tourney. Thanks for the questions.Thank you very much for your time .
show: Getting Your Own Interview
One concluding note: when I volunteered for this project, I offered to interview "all of the tournament winners." How naive I was! I had no idea what a staggering number of tournaments there really are. Now I understand that there is no way I will be able to get to everyone. I intend to publish three or four interviews in every edition of the Dispatch, but even so I will probably only get to talk to about 5 or 10 percent of all the winners. My approach will be partially random and partially targetted. Some will be chosen because of their fame or amazing stats, some will be chosen because I find the tournament that they were in to be unusual or especially interesting, and many will be chosen completely at random. I will pay special attention to those that are winning a tournament for the very first time. If you are looking forward to telling the story of the exciting tournament that you were just in and want to be on my list, please feel free to PM me any time. Dukasaur .
Good morrow, gents! I am happy to announce that dolomite13 is partially incapacitated due to "unforeseen" circumstances
, so I am the Foundry Executive for this exciting issue! Given this is my first header for the Foundry section, I'd like you to put things into perspective. The Foundry is the future of Conquer Club - your commenting and input early on in a map's progress can change CC in about 9 months, when the map is finally in Beta. You can impact the future of Conquer Club by simply taking a minute or two to type up your thoughts on the topics of discussion. Want to comment, but you're not sure what's being discussed? No worries! The comment-thirsty mapmaker will always get you up to speed and make you aware of what's currently up for discussion.
Now that that's out of the way, I'm delighted and a half to present you with Issue 42's Foundry section. MarshalNey, who has been caught up in his Cartographer duties for last few issues, is back with a vengeance with two fantastic articles: "Maps Briefly (on Steroids)", informing you of the foundry activity lately, and "Foundry News", explaining all the shenanigans that are going on in Foundry. dolomite's back with Part 4 of his US history article miniseries, and Tisha's in the spotlight this issue, interviewed by yours falsely. Enjoy the fruits of our laboring fingers!
Foundry News by MarshalNey show
There have been a lot of things happening in the Foundry since the last issue- a sad departure, a promotion, a re-organization, a new mapmaking design specification, a contest, the hint of some Foundry flair to come and more! So, without further ado, let's dish out the skinny:Evil DIMwit Retires Long-standing Cartography Assistant Evil DIMwit , who was a mainstay of the Gameplay Workshop and the host of the recent Capital Competition, has decided to retire from his current position. His tireless efforts and thoughtful advice were much appreciated, and the blue shoes that he leaves behind will be hard to fill. Our best wishes for Evil D in all of his future endeavors, whatever they may be. Thenobodies80 Becomes Deputy Foreman The creation of a Deputy Foreman was announced January 26th by Foundry Foreman MrBenn , along with the news that thenobodies80 would be promoted to the position from his old duties in the Graphics Workshop . 'Nobodies' will apparently be helping to assist MrBenn directly in his duties as Foreman, as well as overseeing the newly resurrected Drafting Room . Congratulations nobodies! The Drafting Room Is Re-Animating It's back from the grave, run for your lives! Oh wait... it's just the Drafting Room That's right, the old Drafting Room is back in business, along with the cool Draft Stamp. Foundry Foreman MrBenn has determined that it might better for the process if the Melting Pot forum was divided between threads that had active map drafts, and threads that were still in the idea stage. So, consider the Melting Pot the place where the map concept develops; and then the Drafting room is where the concept takes shape as a series of rough drafts that culminate in the Design Brief and a solid, workable plan for gameplay and graphics. Still scared? Don't be, the Drafting Room is overseen by thenobodies80 and MrBenn, old hands in mapmaking who are eager to share their wisdom with all who ask. So let's give a warm welcome to the new-retro-Drafting Room!So What's That Smell? Wondering where the Melting Pot has gone to? Visit the Drafting Room , and the Melting Pot is at the tippity-top, listed as a subforum. Click on there to see new map ideas, give advice, provide support or start for yourself the creative labor of love that is mapmaking. Something Huge No, it's not Godzilla, it's not King Kong, it's... Supersize maps! After years of clamoring, mapmakers and Cartography staff alike have gotten their wish. The Foundry is now authorized by Lackattack himself to approve maps for Supersize status. The Standard limits- for those who don't know- have been 630x600 pixels for small maps and 840x800 pixels for large maps for a long time. Now, however, the Supersize limits allow a small map to have 1000x800 pixels and the large map to hold a whopping 1400x1200 pixels. And in exceptional cases, maps are allowed to go even larger. However, in order to ensure that every map made from now on doesn't just suddenly 'need' all of those pixels (after all, we've been doing okay with the old limits up till now, right?), the request for a Supersize map must be made in the Design Brief and no later . All requests will require the approval of the Foundry before going forward, so please be sure that your design concept actually requires a supersized map. If it turns out that it doesn't, don't sweat it- the Cartography staff will let you down kindly But what's the use of borrowing trouble? For now, the watchword is Victory! Hurrah for Supersize!Contests and Hot Topics Bounty Hunters in Beta That's right, there's bounty to be had in playing two new Beta maps- Industrial Helix 's South Africa 1885 , and the winner of the Capital Competition, thenobodies80 's Middle Ages . See the contest for details on how you can win a premium prize.Nifty Notices Still being tested out, but on the horizon are Foundry forum icons. Several curious Foundry folks have noticed these little buggers popping up when they go to post- of course their eyes must have been in error, as those icons are for Cartography staff only So if you start hallucinating about colorful Foundry icons when you post, just chalk it up to all of the excitement that you're feeling and kindly ignore them- and thank you comrades for your fine Doublethinking. The Votes Are In And the winner of the 2010 map beauty pageant is... Napoleonic Europe ! With an astounding 370 votes tallied, the epic map of the Napoleonic Wars came in with a convincing 60 votes, 20 more than the runner-up, Japan. Congratulations Kab, Rask and Ender on a map well played The Front Page Mr.Benn and the Foundry is wondering what folks think about the first posts of map threads. Even if you don't visit the Foundry, you've probably seen them when you clicked on the 'discussion topic' link after viewing the map from the Game Finder. So... are they confusing? Well-written? What can they use? Maps Briefly (on Steroids) by MarshalNey show
Movin' On Up Approved for Draft, On to the Gameplay Workshop- First Nations of the Americas (First Nations Combined) by Tisha The Foundry's first Supersize map. See the section on recently stickied maps, below, for a full description.Conquer Rome by Kabanellas Ambitious, historically compelling and polished as always, Kabanellas- the creator of the popular Third Crusade map and part of the team that made Napoleonic Europe - gives the CC community his latest offering about the declining era of the Roman Empire. Without a doubt, it is a large and strategically deep map.Stamped for Gameplay, On to the Graphics Workshop- The Northwest Passage by shakeycat Another beautiful, elegant map from the maker of Vancouver that depicts the legendary exploits of explorers looking for the Northwest Passage in the frozen waters of the Arctic Ocean. Wonderful, intuitive gameplay graphics grace a balanced, medium-to-large map that has something to offer both the hard-core strategist and the casual CCer.The Austro-Hungarian Empire by thenobodies80 Constituting yet another fine historical map to advance through the Foundry, from our own Deputy Foreman thenobodies80. Detailing Austria-Hungary shortly before its destruction in the Great War, this smooth medium-sized map features build-a-bonus possibility as well as standard gameplay, and an interesting victory objective of holding the Two Thrones of the Dual Monarchy.Into Beta Play- Industrial Helix 's South Africa 1885 thenobodies80 's Middle Ages New Stickies In the Gameplay Workshop- Philadelphia by RedBaron0 A nice medium-sized city map with a couple of unique gameplay features. The underdog bonus, while untried, looks like it could make this map a huge favorite- the lower you are under 4 regions, the higher the bonus! I, for one, am really excited to see how this experiment plays out. In 8-player games, for instance, it's a nice treat to toss to some poor guy who gets ganged up on in the first round.Antarctica by natty_dread and isaiah40 The map has gameplay that uses decay extensively, yet with a +1 bonus per decaying tert, it gives plenty of incentive to go out and conquer. And yet, there's no good place to keep a stack as nearly everything gets a decay. Perfect thematically for our most inhospitable continent, and I think that this map will be an interesting and fun playtest. I love that there are 16 starting positions, making each game new and unpredictable.First Nations of the Americas (First Nations Combined) by Tisha A nice showcase for the new Supersize breed of maps. There are no neutrals anymore, but given the swelled number of regions, the chances of dropping a bonus are slim. The standard reinforcements for the number of regions (and the minimum) have been modified to 1 per 4 regrions, minimum 4.Chinese Civil War by Industrial Helix Depicting the Civil War of China following the Japanese defeat in World War II, Helix's historical concept for the map is communicated quite well through the gameplay. Part of Helix's 'Rise of Communism' map pack, the Chinese Civil War map could be quite a nice hybrid of the conquest/standard map types.New In the Drafting Room- Small World by MrBenn I'm actually tickled by the idea behind this map, as its tiny size is meant to fit onto a phone screen. And it's more than just a re-hash of Classic- the lack of connection between the sides of the map, and the -1 decay on Anarctica in particular make it different. Plus, lowering the number of regions in every continent except Aussie and S. America make the bonuses more balanced, and the strategy more open and less drop-dependent.

The lead up to the war began with the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in August 1990 which was met with immediate economic sanctions by the United Nations against Iraq. The coalition commenced hostilities in January 1991, resulting in a decisive victory for the U.S. led coalition forces, which drove Iraqi forces out of Kuwait with minimal coalition deaths. Despite the low death toll, over 180,000 US veterans would later be classified as "permanently disabled" according to the US Department of Veterans Affairs (National Gulf War Resource Center; see also Gulf War Syndrome). The main battles were aerial and ground combat within Iraq, Kuwait and bordering areas of Saudi Arabia. Land combat did not expand outside of the immediate Iraq/Kuwait/Saudi border region, although the coalition bombed cities and strategic targets across Iraq, and Iraq fired missiles on Israeli and Saudi cities. Before the war, many observers believed the US and its allies could win but might suffer substantial casualties (certainly more than any conflict since Vietnam), and that the tank battles across the harsh desert might rival those of North Africa during World War II. After nearly 50 years of proxy wars, and constant fears of another war in Europe between NATO and the Warsaw Pact, some thought the Gulf War might finally answer the question of which military philosophy would have reigned supreme. Iraqi forces were battle-hardened after 8 years of war with Iran, and they were well-equipped with late model Soviet tanks and jet fighters, but the anti-aircraft weapons were crippled; in comparison, the US had no large-scale combat experience since its withdrawal from Vietnam nearly 20 years earlier, and major changes in US doctrine, equipment and technology since then had never been tested under fire. However, the battle was one-sided almost from the beginning. The reasons for this are the subject of continuing study by military strategists and academics. There is general agreement that US technological superiority was a crucial factor but the speed and scale of the Iraqi collapse has also been attributed to poor strategic and tactical leadership and low morale among Iraqi troops, which resulted from a history of incompetent leadership. After devastating initial strikes against Iraqi air defenses and command and control facilities on 17 January 1991, coalition forces achieved total air superiority almost immediately. The Iraqi air force was destroyed within a few days, with some planes fleeing to Iran where they were interned for the duration of the conflict. The overwhelming technological advantages of the US, such as stealth aircraft and infrared sights, quickly turned the air war into a "turkey shoot". The heat signature of any tank which started its engine made an easy target. Air defense radars were quickly destroyed by radar-seeking missiles fired from wild weasel aircraft. Grainy video clips, shot from the nose cameras of missiles as they zeroed in on impossibly small targets, were a staple of US news coverage and revealed to the world a new kind of war, compared by some to a video game. Over 6 weeks of relentless pounding by planes and helicopters, the Iraqi army was almost completely beaten but did not retreat, under orders from Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, and by the time the ground forces invaded on 24 February, many Iraqi troops quickly surrendered to forces much smaller than their own; in one instance, Iraqi forces attempted to surrender to a television camera crew that was advancing with coalition forces. After just 100 hours of ground combat, and with all of Kuwait and much of southern Iraq under coalition control, US President George H. W. Bush ordered a cease-fire and negotiations began resulting in an agreement for cessation of hostilities. Some US politicians were disappointed by this move, believing Bush should have pressed on to Baghdad and removed Hussein from power; there is little doubt that coalition forces could have accomplished this if they had desired. Still, the political ramifications of removing Hussein would have broadened the scope of the conflict greatly, and many coalition nations refused to participate in such an action, believing it would create a power vacuum and destabilize the region. Following the Gulf War, to protect minority populations, the US, Britain, and France declared and maintained no-fly zones in northern and southern Iraq, which the Iraqi military frequently tested. The no-fly zones persisted until the 2003 invasion of Iraq, although France withdrew from participation in patrolling the no-fly zones in 1996, citing a lack of humanitarian purpose for the operation. Additionally, following the discovery of an aborted assassination plot aimed at former President George H.W. Bush, Navy ships bombed Iraqi intelligence facilities with cruise missiles in June 1993.Somalia US troops participated in a UN peacekeeping mission in Somalia beginning in 1992. By 1993 the US troops were augmented with Rangers and special forces with the aim of capturing warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid, whose forces had massacred peacekeepers from Pakistan. During a raid in downtown Mogadishu, US troops became trapped overnight by a general uprising in the Battle of Mogadishu. 18 American soldiers were killed, and a US television crew filmed graphic images of the body of one soldier being dragged through the streets by an angry mob. Somali guerrillas paid a staggering toll at an estimated 1,000-5,000 total casualties during the conflict. After much public disapproval, American forces were quickly withdrawn by President Bill Clinton. The incident profoundly affected US thinking about peacekeeping and intervention. The book Black Hawk Down was written about the battle, and was the basis for the later movie of the same name.Yugoslavia During the war in Yugoslavia in the early 1990s, the US operated in Bosnia and Herzegovina as part of the NATO-led multinational implementation force (IFOR) in Operation Joint Endeavour . The USA was one of the NATO member countries who bombed Yugoslavia between March 24 and June 9, 1999 during the Kosovo War and later contributed to the multinational force KFOR.War on Terrorism (2001–present) The War on Terrorism is a global effort by the governments of several countries (primarily the United States and its principal allies) to neutralize international terrorist groups (primarily radical Islamist terrorist groups, including al-Qaeda) and ensure that rogue nations no longer support terrorist activities. It has been adopted as a response to the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.Afghanistan The invasion of Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom - Afghanistan) to depose that country's Taliban government and destroy training camps associated with al-Qaida is understood to have been the opening, and in many ways defining, campaign of the broader War on Terrorism. The emphasis on Special Operations Forces (SOF), political negotiation with autonomous military units, and the use of proxy militaries marked a significant change from prior U.S. military approaches.Philippines In January 2002, the U.S. sent more than 1,200 troops (later raised to 2,000) to assist the Armed Forces of the Philippines in combating terrorist groups linked to al-Qaida, such as Abu Sayyaf, under Operation Enduring Freedom - Philippines. Operations are taking place mostly in the Sulu Archipelago, where terrorists and other groups are active. The majority of troops provide logistics; however, a sizable portion are Special Forces troops that are training and assisting in combat operations against the terrorist groups.Iraq After the lengthy Iraq disarmament crisis culminated with an American demand that Iraqi President Saddam Hussein leave Iraq, which was refused, a coalition led by the United States and the United Kingdom fought the Iraqi army in the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Approximately 250,000 United States troops, with support from 45,000 British, 2,000 Australian and 200 Polish combat forces, entered Iraq primarily through their staging area in Kuwait. (Turkey had refused to permit its territory to be used for an invasion from the north.) Coalition forces also supported Iraqi Kurdish militia, estimated to number upwards of 50,000. After approximately three weeks of fighting, Hussein and the Ba'ath Party were forcibly removed, followed by an extended period of military occupation. The military history of the United States spans a period of over two centuries. During the course of those years, the United States evolved from a new nation fighting the British Empire for independence without a professional military (1775–1783), through a monumental American Civil War (1861–65) to the world's sole remaining superpower of the late 20th century and early 21st century.
Map Spotlight: First Nations of the Americas by Victor Sullivan show
Settle down, people, SETTLE DOWN. I know you're excited about the combining of the two glorious First Nations maps, and it's my pleasure to present you with this fine interview. I will be covering most of the interviews now with The Bison King's leaving, and I hope my interviewing skills are up to par with TBK's expertise in the arts of Ryan Seacrest. Anyways, Tisha has done a fantastalastic job, if I do say so myself, and I hope you enjoy the interview about her mapmaking career. I've provided the full-size image so you can see how epic it is Click image to enlarge. ‹Tisha › there ‹Victor Sullivan › Yo ‹Tisha › I'm assuming it was you trying to pm me ‹Victor Sullivan › Oh ‹Tisha › no? ‹Victor Sullivan › Yeah in LC, if thats what you mean ‹Tisha › yes ‹Tisha › what's going on? ‹Victor Sullivan › Well, so you okay if I ask you a few ?s? ‹Tisha › lol ‹Tisha › like what? ‹Victor Sullivan › About your map, silly - for the Dispatch ‹Tisha › I guess I'll let you..lol ‹Tisha › the new one? ‹Victor Sullivan › Yup ‹Victor Sullivan › First off - why? What possessed you to create the First Nations Frankenstein? ‹Tisha › lol ‹Tisha › you're so cute ‹Victor Sullivan › Aw, shucks... ‹Tisha › I don't know why, I've wanted them together before the S. America one was even quenched. Like how could you not put those two together? ‹Victor Sullivan › What aspect are you most psyched about upon beta-quenching? The first non-seasonal gi-huge-ic map? The neat sea routes? Etc...? ‹Tisha › I suppose it's kinda exciting to have the first gi-huge-ic map out, and it's definitely beautiful. I think I'm more excited just to play it...imagine some fog of war, or assassin... quads. ‹Victor Sullivan › How long would you expect a No Spoils Adjacent game to last? ‹Tisha › Play one with me when it comes out? ‹Victor Sullivan › Lol, ok ‹Tisha › it's only about 74 territories.... not that many ‹Victor Sullivan › If by 74 you mean, 127, then yes lol. ‹Victor Sullivan › When you first started making the First Nations maps, what was your original intent? Why "First Nations"? ‹Tisha › that's a long time ago, I'm suppose to remember? ‹Victor Sullivan › Lol, yes. I'm 52 and can remember stuff from that long ago... ‹Victor Sullivan › If you can't that's cool, though... ‹Tisha › I don't really like the older N. America map. I guess I was just lookin for another option, something prettier. (: ‹Victor Sullivan › ‹Tisha › and I don't believe you're 52, by the way... ‹Victor Sullivan › Lol, what? ‹Victor Sullivan › I'm a teacher - I pick up fancy lingo ‹Tisha › what was the what to? ‹Victor Sullivan › Hmm? ‹Tisha › Victor Sullivan, don't lose me like that ‹Victor Sullivan › What'd I do? ‹Tisha › focus! ‹Victor Sullivan › Lol, okay - next question... ‹Victor Sullivan › How has the Foundry process treated you through the maps you've made thus far? ‹Tisha › lol, really? ‹Victor Sullivan › Why not? ‹Tisha › The first map, Puget Sound, was a mess.. I'm surprised I stuck around to make another map at all. ‹Tisha › There was a lot of non productive meaness.. ‹Victor Sullivan › How so? What happened? ‹Tisha › The map got pushed forward, pushed forward into the Final Forge... then that's when a bunch of people came in to tell me to change pretty much everything about my map. I got to hear about how it didn't belong in the Final Forge a lot. Kinda hard when you feel like you're almost done. ‹Tisha › It all turned out all right in the end, the map turned out beautiful, but the process sucked. ‹Victor Sullivan › How were things for the First Nations maps? ‹Tisha › They were easier. ‹Victor Sullivan › Lol, okay. ‹Tisha › having been through it once, you kinda know what to expect ‹Victor Sullivan › Ah, I see ‹Tisha › the map didn't change too much from the first draft to the last.. ‹Victor Sullivan › What's your favorite part about making a map? What do you look forward to through quenching First Nations of the Americas? ‹Tisha › Victor Sullivan, I'm a girl. I like to make things pretty. I love doing graphics of maps... very clueless about gameplay. (: ‹Tisha › I just can't wait to play the map with friends. I love people enjoying my maps also... of course ‹Victor Sullivan › So how did you come up with the gameplay structures for First Nations? ‹Tisha › The bonus regions were easy to separate... as soon as you look up any Native American information. There is alot of information on the different cultures out there. I didn't do that randomly myself. ‹Victor Sullivan › I see ‹Tisha › I played a bit of escalating, and knew I wanted some deadends. ‹Tisha › it just kinda happens I guess.. with a little help from people in the map threads. ‹Victor Sullivan › Okay, I won't pester you much further Just one more question ‹Victor Sullivan › THE BEST - how does this describe First Nations of the Americas? ‹Tisha › lol, perfectly Victor Sullivan ♥ ‹Tisha › are you excited to play it? ‹Victor Sullivan › SUPA PSYCHED ‹Victor Sullivan › Thanks for being willing to be interviewed ‹Tisha › oh, I had a choice? ‹Tisha › ‹Victor Sullivan › Lol

I wouldn’t say it’s all been sunshine and laughter but it seems there are a good number who agree with the clan editor that we can have more fun by if we all try to get along with each other. So well done to each and every one of you who has sent a message of peace in the forums or bitten your tongue in gamechat and put a funny where a flame could be.
Read on – the Conquerors Cup final is headed toward a climax, the League quarters are in play, clan challenges are underway – and the two newly recruited clan directors share their thoughts on the state of the clans.

Conqueror's Cup Finals THOTA (16) vs. KoRT (17) vrs We'd been looking forward to a great final and after a fractious start it looks like we have one. Number one seeds THOTA went a long way behind in the first set against 7-ranked outsiders Knights of the Round Table. But in the second set THOTA have pulled out all the stops to narrow the gap. Likely KoRT will keep their lead for now but the scores are close enough to ensure the action will be hot. The clan leaders had this to say: Incandenza (THOTA) wrote: Confidence is high! Obviously it was a bit of a downer being down so much after Round 1, but we've battled back and at the very least have narrowed the gap, with an okay chance to tie and an outside chance to actually take the lead going into the final round. It's been great seeing rivals that wouldn't normally wish us well cheering for us and applauding the comeback, and I know I speak for all the horsemen when I thank everyone who's supported us during this challenge. And I've never been prouder of my clan or my clanmates, every last one of us are going the extra mile to leave no strategic stone unturned. Round three should be epic. I invite everyone in CC's clan community to participate in the thread regardless of who they're rooting for. After almost a year, it won't be too long now before a Conqueror's Cup champion is crowned.
Bruceswar (KORT) wrote: The mood within the walls of KORT is great. Sure they have taken back some games, but batch 3 is gonna be fierce from the KORT side and we look forward to trying to pull out this one. We are gonna do everything we can to keep fighting till the end.
2nd Annual Conqueror's Cup!! Organiser Chuuuuck is gearing up for a second edition. There's a great line-up already and it looks like there might be even more clans playing this time round. Of the first 16 clans to join up, many did not play in the first cup, mostly because they weren't around then. That'll make for some excitement in the early rounds with players and watchers alike not sure quite what to expect. There's still time to join, so rally round your clanmates and get them to sign up to take part in CC's biggest team event - click on The 2nd Annual Conquerors Cup title to go straight there. Clan League 3 : Quarter finals [04-Feb) vrs The last tie to start; first kill goes to TSM. vrs Immortal Assassins take more wins than Myth from the first games to finish. vrs An interesting match-up between two successful clans: all games joined, no players eliminated as we went to press. vrs Agents of Chaos took the early lead but Empire look to have pulled that back pretty quick.

AKA (12) V OSA (21) stokiepaul (One Step Ahead) wrote: As this clan war approaches it's conclusion One Step Ahead find themselves on the brink of a win at their first attempt with the scores at 21-12 in their favour. The 1st set of matches (consisting of 3 doubles, triples and quads from each clan) saw the OSA dominate the doubles winning each clans sets. The triples were an even affair with each winning their own sets 2-1 while in the quads the scores were again 2-1 but with OSA winning both set. While the second sets are still ongoing the results already in make for interesting reading with AKA taking a 3-0 lead in the OSA's doubles games with 1 match to finish while in the AKA's own set they lost out 3 to 1. OSA lead their own triples by 3-0 and find themselves in a great position to claim the 1 remaining win needed for overall victory on the AKA's quad match Rail Europe

Interview - new clan directors, Shaneback and chemefreak show
With clan activity increasing all the time, head clan director jpcloet has brought two new directors, chemefreak of ++The Legion++ and shaneback of Devil's Brigade onto his team. We put a few questions to them over banana daiquiris at CC Towers.chemefreak wrote: What made you want to be a clan director? I spend a lot of time here on CC and there have been several occasions where I wished I could have helped the CDs update threads and manage the clan area. So now I get my chance. Hopefully I can contribute to the continued success and growth of the clan area. Also, as for "wanting" to be a CD, I never actively sought the position. An old friend of mine from here on CC recommended me and it sorta worked itself out. I am excited about the opportunity.
How healthy are the clans right now? What is going well and what could be better? I think clans are pretty healthy right now. The Clan League seems to have run really smooth this year thanks in most part to jpcloet and
Masli 's efforts. The CCup was a lot of fun. I think a big deal was made over a rule that sort of tarnished this first effort a bit, but things should run much more smoothly in CCups to come. There are quite a few new clans popping up that look like they are going to be successful and that is great for the clan community as a whole. As far as things that could be better, I would like to see more concern on the part of certain players for the clan community as a whole. I think most players understand that clans are a privilege here on CC and not necessarily a right. So if issues like flaming, thread hijacking, account hijacking, and sitter abuse in clans continues to "make the news" some day the powers that be may just decide that clans aren't worth it and go back to the way it was before.
What will you be doing as clan director, what activities and responsibilities does it involve? I am
jpcloet 's bitch! Shane and I are technically "part-time" CDs so the scope of our involvement will probably come into focus as time passes. I'm pretty sure we will be doing the mundane (e.g. issuing clan war medals, issuing privileges, etc.) and, hopefully, some more exciting things (e.g. the implementation of the first official Leap Ladder). So, basically, I'm just here to help in whatever way I can.
What type of game do you most enjoy on CC? My favorite games are standard, escalating games on large maps with lots of players. I absolutely love the Map Blaster tournaments. Of course, clan war games are fun and the fact that we are "keeping score" seems to make those games much more intense. My favorite map is by far AoR1, foggy of course.
Why is The Legion the best clan on CC? Wow, this is a loaded question! I love ++The Legion++. Every member was carefully selected and plays an important role in the clan. I have gotten to know every member very well and gotten to know quite a few of them in the real world too. The thing that makes ++The Legion++ unique is the "family" quality that exists. If someone misses a turn or makes a bad move that loses a game, we would never consider kicking that person out of the clan. That is just not what our clan is about. We also have great leadership. Most people don't know ralphcptc is the leader of ++The Legion++ (probably since I talk so much!) but the guy has the respect of everyone in ++The Legion++ and has steered us through thick and thin. I don't think you will ever hear me say that ++The Legion++ is the best clan on CC. But, I think that we have the most fun and the most tightly knit clan on CC. (Woo Goo!) Also, I think we can hang with the best clans on CC and we always have a shot to win anything we play in.
shaneback wrote: What made you want to be a clan director? I would like to help new clans avoid the mistakes that a lot make, such as recruiting and activity requirements. Its disappointing to see a clan form and then only last 3-6 months. Hopefully I can help to avoid that in the future.
How healthy are the clans right now? What is going well? Clans are doing great. Between the Clan League playoffs and the Conquerors Cup finals the best players on the site are doing battle. Conquerors Cup 2 will be starting in about a month, which includes a bunch of clans that were not involved in CC1.
What could be better? I think there is a ton of undiscovered talent out there. There are so many players that never visit the forum or even know clans exist. We could do better at getting them involved with clans.
What will you be doing as clan director, what activities and responsibilities does it involve? Currently Cheme and I are still in training, so we don't have any direct responsibilities yet. JP has a lot of goals he wants to implement in 2011. Hopefully the 4 of us (the fourth clan director is
Masli ) are able to achieve these goals.
What type of game do you most enjoy on CC? I enjoy and will play most settings. But I have to say I enjoy team games the most. Nothing is more satisfying than coordinating with teammates to take down a tough opposing team.
Why is Devil's Brigade the best clan on CC? What I enjoy about being a Devil is the wide range of personalities I have met. We have guys from all over the world who bring diverse backgrounds to the clan. We are a smaller clan with about 15 active members, and when we recruit new members we favor personality over game play.
