Welcome Comrades to the 50th edition of the Dispatch!
This will sadly be my last edition as an executive of the newsletter as I move on to other projects but fear not as I shall continue to contribute and assist with the newsletter as a reporter when I can. As part of the special 50th edition we have an interview with the creator of the newsletter and entertainment team leader samuelc812! Among other things in the clans section, Master Fenrir returns with his popular Hardballs, in the foundry we have a review of doodle earth by Oliver FA and Dukasaur interviews Dibbler in the tournament section. I hope you enjoy reading the newsletter as much as we enjoy creating it!

nagerous Freestyle Executive [Community] Here's An Idea, by rdsrds2120 show
As ConquerClub continues to grow and mature, it does so with updates from our one and only Webmaster, lackattack. Implementing different types of updates is key to a site's healthy performance, but there's always a nice sense of community and involvement when a featured update had sprouted from a Suggestion by one of our very own denizens of CC. Whether it's Nuclear Spoils as suggested by cramill , which adds a new setting to gameplay, or the implementation of the Tournaments tab, or splitting up the Suggs and Bugs forum to make things more efficient for the site, community inspired updates help keep the site running smoothly. However, with so many suggestions from the community, it can be tedious at times to decide which should be implemented first. To shed some light onto this, a thread was started to track the Community's Opinion on such matters, and the results could be surprising to some. Here is a list of the top 10 most supported ideas from the thread:Adjacent Attacks Infected Neutrals XML Updates Account Sitting Feature Increase Player Limit to 12 Team Assassin and Terminator 1v1 Team Games More Feedback from Webmaster/Web Developer Mass Wall Clear Speed Game Round Lengths While the list is subjective, it was clear from the thread that Adjacent Attacks took the lead. Nearly every page had someone supporting it somehow, and the supporters made clear that it would be their favorite Suggestion, one notable player even offering to buy premium to help test the feature! As we move down the list, we pass some old standbys -- XML Suggestions. Long craved by the Foundry , these suggestions would give more room for mapmakers to paint in new concepts into gameplay and the maps themselves. The most recent XML Update, Losing Conditions, is inherent to the Middle Ages map just for an example of how XML Updates can help maps and gameplay become more dynamic. After having some more light in case of recent events in the Cheating & Abuse forum, more support has been established for an Account Sitting Feature to be implemented into the site. As many know, this may be on the priority list for the Webmaster already, as it seems that it is supposed to be a feature Admin would like to see sometime in the 2011 year! So with a little bit of patience, this Suggestion may be implemented sooner than we know. Another favorite of the masses is the good old Suggestion to Increase the Player Limit to 12. Some argue that this feature, however, would clutter gameplay and make it easier for farmers, but the massive pro of the possibility of 3 and 4 team Triples Matches, 3 Team Quads, and 4, 5, and 6 player Doubles games far negates any drawbacks associated with this Suggestion. Also, when bearing in mind the possibility of this Suggestion in junction with Team Terminator & Assassin games, these two Suggestions could come to complement one another upon potential implementation. However, if and when seems to be a big issue with most forum-goers in the Suggestions forum is lacking the sense of acknowledgement. Many would like to see more continual updates and feedback from the Webmaster, but whether this will come about is simply a matter of time and observance. As time passes, no one knows which Suggestion or update is about to be released, or what new exciting feature may come around. However, only continual update from many community members of Suggestions they support the most will make the Suggestions forum carry its purpose. Suggestions need support to become implemented, and it is encouraged that more ConquerClub members come around to the forum here and there and express their support. After all, that's what gets some ideas pushed through! If you would like to express your thoughts or opinions on the Special Events that ConquerClub hosts for the Community, a thread has been started to take your thoughts! A write-up will be in the next newsletter!
The Scum Insider by safariguy5/nagerous/fircoal show
The Scum Insider Newbie Help Want to get into the Mafia scene, but don't know how to play or even what it is? Consult these threads: Mafia Information , Mafia and You , and Rules and Terms of Mafia . Too much work? Too lazy to read through everything? No worries, you can always jump right into a game and ask for other players or the game runner to help guide you. What is "Mafia"? Mafia, for those of you that don't know, is a game that generally takes place in a town, where the townspeople have to determine who the mafia (or "scum") is and lynch them via a majority vote during the day and the mafia try to kill everyone at night and bluff their way out of getting killed by the town.Mafia News It has been an exciting couple of weeks in mafia. Numerous games have begun with this week, ranging from Game of Thrones mafia by Iliad to Native American mafia by Anarkistsdream. Also, Conquer Club's second official mafia is about to kick off too, Futurama Mafia by safariguy5 and CC's admin AndyDufresne, a rare find in the mafia forum has even decided to join in the fun! Will he be lynched day one? Who knows?! Mafia Callouts Calling all players interested! Some mafia games need some filling: Sign-ups: Seeking Replacements: Feel free to consult the new Replacement Thread to see what games are in need of reserves/replacements. Now get out there and investigate Mafia for yourself: viewforum.php?f=213 Advanced Roles and Strategy by safariguy5 This week, we're talking about blocking rolesThe Roleblocker and Jailkeeper What are they? The roleblocker targets someone every night and prevents them from using their night action. Sometimes, the target is informed that they have been blocked, depending on mod choice. The jailkeeper also blocks the person, but also protects them as well.Example John is a roleblocker and he roleblocks Jack. Jack is a doctor, and he tries to protect Jill. Jill is not protected as a result of the roleblock. How to Play these Roles Roleblockers can either be Town or Mafia . Mafia roleblockers tend to be pretty straightforward to play, if there is a cop or doctor claimed, block them until they are killed. Town roleblockers generally should try to block a different person every night. If they can prevent a nightkill, then they know that their night target was the one responsible and is probably a mafia goon. Roleblockers are not particularly powerful town roles, so revealing yourself to kill a mafia member is a fair trade most of the time. Jailkeepers are almost always Town . They tend to be a bit harder to play, mainly because of the difficult decision about whether to jailkeep a claimed cop or doctor. Jailkeeping a doctor tends to be a better idea as the cop usually hasn't claimed yet and the doctor is a high priority mafia target. Jailkeeping a claimed cop usually renders the cop a vanilla townie as he basically cannot gather any information. It's usually better to hope that there is another protective role to protect a claimed cop.
show: Interrogation of samuelc812
Q. Hey there samuelc812!Hey nagerous! Q. You used to be a Global Moderator, what inspired you to switch to the Entertainment Team? Do you enjoy organizing events as the Entertainment Dept Leader more than you did giving out warnings, etc., as a Global Moderator?Umm absolutely! Originally when i was a Global Moderator there was no Entertainment Team, while global moderating was ok I'd much rather be organising fun events, creating fun graphics and such. Optimus Prime had a callout for Events Coordinator and it jumped right out at me, it took me a few weeks to tell him of my interest but i eventually did and made the switch. Q.How would you describe volunteering as the Entertainment Team Head?Challenging but it has its rewarding points, putting a new event out there and seeing people playing on a new map or a new tournament and having fun between website updates is really rewarding and I enjoy it. Q. What has been your fondest experience on Conquer Club as the "Entertainment Coordinator"? The most stressful?Hmmm. Seeing the newsletter go from strength to strength has been good, and seeing events become more prominent have been the highlights for me. Most stressful would probably be leading up to and at the beginning of a special event, wondering if everything will work out properly, mistakes frustrate me sometimes but all we can do is improve haha. Q.What is your favorite part of volunteering for CC?Meeting new people is a great benefit of being on TeamCC, there are a lot of friendly people. It's also been great to develop and practice organising and creating different things which is something i really enjoy. Q.How has CC changed your life?Well i find i spend a lot less time watching TV than i used to for some reason. I used to watch all those CSI shows but they really don't interest me anymore and i spend that time on CC. I probably spend too much time on here now but it's a good experience and why not spend your time on something you enjoy. Q. Have you ever been tempted to schedule a team meeting at 8 pm just to get the Americans out of bed early? That's an awesome idea! Kudos to whoever asked this question! Q. Why Will Turner? The Pirates of the Carribean films are some of my favourites and he was my favourite character from them (pity he wasn't in the latest one) so that's why. Q. How would you describe the complex relationship between you and Orlando Bloom? If i told you I'd have to perform some unspeakable form of torture on you Q. Favourite non-Australian television show?Glee! Love the music, in some cases i think it's a lot better than some of the other music that comes out. Also the Big Bang Theory, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Frasier are also good Q. Favourite Australian television show? Ummm what Australian TV shows? I've never really been into Australian television (does that make me disloyal?). I've watched a few episodes of "Packed to the Rafters" but never really got into it, I hear "Underbelly" is also good, but again I've never really watched it..... Q. Why did you select the username "samuelc812"?My name is sam, i wanted samuelc777 for my e-mail address but it was taken and it suggested a few other options. samuelc812 was one of them and for some reason i chose it as my username here when i registered. In hindsight i would have chosen something different like Aragorn or maybe Megatron would have been good Q. What has been your favorite Special Event to run/organize?Tough one, probably the world cup events or easter up to this point. Q. Coffee or alcohol?Neither, coffee is too bitter for me and I've never had alcohol and probably never will (personal choice). Though i have tried this wonderful thing called vegemite Q. What is your favorite map-in-production?I'm really keen to see how Research and Conquer plays, it's been in production for a long time and I'm quite keen to give it a go Q.Will you make another non-Special Events map? If so, what map? If not, what map would you like to make?Someday I'd like to finish my Battle of Britain Map that i started a couple of years ago, but i don't have the time or motivation to do much on it right now. Q. What is your favorite form of entertainment besides CC?Watching movies. I really enjoy spending time with family and friends, playing games and just spending quality time with people it's great! Q. When you were in high school, how would you classify yourself then (nerd, jock, popular, etc.)?Probably the nerd Q. If you were the sole administrator of CC, what would you change (assuming you were capable of doing so)?I would hire several web developers and get them working on things that the community wants. If the community is unhappy and leaves than you have no website, so i think listening to the community more would be something on the top of my list. I would also introduce a vegemite emoticon Q. What do you get when you cross the LOTR trilogy with Kingdom of Heaven?I would imagine one of the best movies of all time, and Orlando Bloom would be a cross between Balian of Ibelin and Legolas. Something like Balleg of Ibolas Q. If you had a regular piece on the Dispatch, what would it be about?I'd love to coordinate with lack to have some sort of update piece with the webmaster. Every couple of issues he would update everyone on where he is at and what he's working on. Though that may give away the element of surprise that he tends to have with his updates Q.What part of CC would you be interested in getting into more if you had an abundance of time?Foundry and Tournaments for sure Q.If you weren't an Entertainment mod, what Special Event(s) would you have participated in?All of them! Q. If you got to pick what color the Entertainment Team is, what color would you choose and why?To be honest i would choose purple but a certain team already snagged it Q.What do you hope to see in the future, whether it be features, add-ons, attitude changes, etc...?Faster updates would be the main thing and I'm sure most would agree. Q. What inspired you to come up with and head the idea of the conquer club newsletter?I worked on the Tournament Newsletter back in the day when Gozar was heading it up and i thought it would be great to have a newsletter that covered everything. There was one for tournaments, and one for the foundry. Why not combine them all into one so that there doesn't end up being several different newsletters all looking for reporters etc. Having it all under the one umbrella made a lot of sense to me. Q. What do you think is in store in regards to the future of the newsletter? Growth, growth and more growth. Q. How do you think the newsletter has progressed over the last 50 editions?I think it's progressed really well, i like how it has evolved and even though there is more to do in order to get it to the level I'd like it to be at, i know we'll reach the goal one day. Q. Thanks for your time samuel! Thanks nagerous!
Greetings and welcome to Issue 50! Our beloved leader
jricart needed a few days off to take care of some family business, so I've had the honour of taking a crack at editing this section. I hope you enjoy the results!
My
Meet the Tournament Winners interview this month is with
Dibbler , and I must say it is one of the most dramatic interviews I've had the pleasure to conduct. Dibbler is not only a great player, but a really neat person to talk to. I hope you enjoy learning about his accomplishments as much as I did.
As the TPA season winds down, events are unfolding fairly slowly, so we decided to not have a TPA update this time around.
Angola will be back with a TPA update for Issue 51, but meanwhile he has prepared an excellent feature article -- the second installment in his continuing coverage of
Rodion 's WCCL tournament.
Sonicsteve has prepared his
Join This? Or Not! overview of tournaments currently recruiting. It examines twice as many tournaments as usual -- a reflection of just how active the tournament world has been lately. Who said summers are slow on CC? Certainly not us!
Dukasaur ,
on behalf of: jricart Tournament Executive Meet the Tournament Winners! by Dukasaur show: Interview with Dibbler
Sometimes success, like good liquor and cheese, needs to be aged to get its full flavour. Today I present to you an interview with Dibbler , who waited two years for his first tournament win, and was then rewarded with not one but three wins within a 60 hour period. From the late morning of May 31st to the late evening of June 1st, Dibbler tasted triumph three times, and judging by his comments, it tasted very good! The first two tournaments were team efforts: Map Map Master Triples Edition: Rail USA hosted by amazzony , which ran from January 15th to May 31st, and Map Master Triples Edition: Battle for Iraq! , also by amazzony , which ran from February 22nd to June 2nd. The third was a solo effort: Dueling Club by InsomniaRed , which ran from April 1st to June 2nd. Normally I start with the tournaments and my first question is always "What attracted you to this particular tournament?" but I think we're going to deviate from the norm here a little bit and start by talking about you. Sounds good. I have become very obsessed and addicted to this site. I'm on every day multiple times for many hours. I love reading the CC dispatch. Its a lot of fun and informative. It will be fun to be in it.When did you first discover CC and how? I was talking with a co-worker and good friend about how I loved all sorts of strategy games, both computer and board, and he recommended the site. At first I only played games against him 1 on 1 but I lost 2/3 of the games so we started playing doubles and it just grew from there. That was way back in December '08 and ironically he no longer plays but I'm still here having the time of my life. How long was it before you got involved in Tournaments? I joined my first tournament in March 2009 and promptly lost in the first round. I will admit that I felt intimidated by the higher ranked players at the time and it took me almost a year before I joined another tournament. In early 2010 I joined another 3 tournaments in a short period of time and again got beaten in the first round of each one. After that I took another break from tournaments. I had become a generalist, in that I was just randomly playing different maps so once I got into a tournament I would be outmatched by players who specialized in specific maps. Luck can take you only so far and I just didn't have any luck in the first tournaments I joined. It wasn't until I joined the Pig Renters clan that I started getting enough reps on specific maps that I really started to understand the strategies was able to challenge players in tournaments. I don't know about other players but I found tournaments intimidating at first. I am a very competitive person and I hate losing. Those first few losses were discouraging and I felt like I wasn't good enough for tournaments. And then suddenly, it all started to pay off.... Let's talk about some of those tournaments now. First one to start was amazzony's Map Master Triples Edition: Rail USA. Is this one of the maps that you've gotten good at? Actually alt1978 , was the one to sign me up for this tournament. I have played a bunch of times on Rail Europe and a few on rail USA but I didn't have any reps in trips and since the clan was a start up we needed to build teams and get reps on many different boards so I got recruited to this tournament. It was my first attempt at a triples tournament. Seems it was a good decision. A big thanks goes out to Dozer for signing me up, even if it was without my knowledge. I guess I need to clarify, because there are two possible translations of "reps" and I'm not sure which you mean. Are you talking "reputation" or "repetition"? "Repetition." Since most of the clan had very little experience with triples and quads we simply needed to play more games. We also needed to find out which players worked well together, and we needed to identify good maps for use as home games in clan challenges.I can see that. Pig Renters is a relatively new clan, and only began forming on January 9th. You guys signed up for the Rail tourney on January 16th, only a week later. So these events were all tied together: you were coming together as a group and working out all the snags and practicing in team tournaments at the same time. Sounds like you really enjoyed working it all out. I loved the whole new clan process. I love learning new maps and even though I had played most maps, team games usually play very different to standard and 1 on 1 games. Something I had to learn quickly and on the fly. Going into the Rail USA tournament I had no expectations other than to learn and gel with my new teammates. The results were beyond my wildest expectations. That is a beautiful-looking map, but very difficult to figure out. The next one you went to was Battle for Iraq, which is pretty much the opposite -- graphically ugly, but fairly easy to play. Is that essentially correct? I agree on the graphics part. I have always liked the colours and design of the Rail Europe and USA maps. Very nice to look at. The Battle for Iraq! map is very brown and the colours are muted so it is not nearly as nice to look at. On the game play side, there is no question the Rail maps are on the harder end of the scale. Especially if you don't have BOB. Even with BOB it is easy to attack yourself into a corner and strand troops. Been there done that. As for Iraq the strategy at first seems easy but it has its intricacies. I remember playing it for the first time and forting my stack to a Baathist and getting it trapped because you can't attack out. That was really frustrating. In the tournament the skill is in knowing how to move your troops around the board and seeing the attack paths. That was a great tournament for me and the team as we went 7-0 undefeated. You had a different team in the Battle for Iraq tournament as well. All Pig Renters again, but on Rail USA your partners had been alt1978 and f.o.b. , whereas in the Battle for Iraq tournament you brought yourself, DogAlmighty , and Gunn217 . Were there any differences in the way the teams worked? You're getting into a touchy subject here. I don't want to accidentally insult any of my great teammates, however they were different. I would have to say that my team for Battle of Iraq worked more like one entity. We knew the strategy and played as one. There was a little less discussion as we had played a couple of games before the tournament and had begun to get to know each other's patterns of play. So much of the planning was figuring out the best attack routes to get a scalp. In the Rail USA we hadn't played together and we needed to discuss strategy more. We had to figure out which plan was the best and it took more planning. That also goes to the differences in the maps. The path we took in Rail USA was much tougher. We had to come back from a 0 and 2 start in the best of five finals.I should hope nobody will be insulted; they are top-notch players all, but some teams are more naturally in tune, while others have to work at it. Still, both teams obviously got the job done, and beat some very tough opponents on some very tough maps, so all of them can be proud of themselves. While we're busy insulting people ( ) let's talk about the Tournament Organiser. I'm absolutely amazed by how much work amazzony does on tournaments, especially on rescuing tournaments that other people started and dropped. In fact, I believe the whole "Map Master Triples" series was something she rescued from another organiser. What did you think of the tournament itself, in operational terms like regular updates and clearly defined rules? I really liked the tournament set up. They were reasonably quick tournaments, which is always nice, and Amazzony would send out the next game within a day of the previous one being finished. It was nice that it wasn't single elimination but not so onerous as the Round Robin style of tournament. If we had a poor drop or bad luck in the first game we still had a chance to recover. I would say Amazzony did an excellent job organizing the tournament. I have been in a few where the first round would end and it would take weeks before the next round started. I have even been in tournaments where I would get another invite and I would think "didn't I get eliminated from that one?" I would have to check to see what actually happened, cause I forgot I was even still in. I will get first hand experience with organizing tournaments as I have started up 2 of my own.Okay, so those two were both Triples tournaments, but the third one that you won was a solo effort. Dueling Club by InsomniaRed was a 1v1 bracket tournament. Tell me some of your memorable moments from that one. This tournament was a lot of fun. I really liked the role playing aspect of the tournament. You weren't required to do any role playing if you didn't want to but because I was Neville Longbottom I just had to do a little. In this tournament you had to choose a character from Harry Potter on signup and that was your character through the tournament. Since I found the tournament late I didn't have a great selection left so I got Neville. I will admit he would not have been my first choice. As a redhead myself, I would have chosen a Weasly. When the first round match-ups were sent out many of them seemed perfect like Neville vs Bellatrix, Sirius vs Snape, Dumbledore vs Lucius, and Harry vs Draco. Since the tournament was a single elimination 1 on 1 bracket, luck certainly played its part in allowing me to win but it was a very fun tournament. The other most memorable part was that Red forgot that the finals was a best of 3 and gave out the winning trophy to Mudpuppy after the first game. It was even more satisfying to have to wrest the trophy away. Fun tournament, great organization!Lol, my next question was going to be, "Why did you choose Longbottom?" You're like the perfect interview subject -- you practically interview yourself. And I'm absolutely delighted that you got into the role-playing aspect of it! I see so many TOs coming up with great themes for tournaments and the players barely notice. It is just fantastic to finally meet someone who jumps in with both feet and really gets into it! And it wasn't just you -- I just re-read that tournament thread and it seems almost everyone squeezed in a Harry Potter comment or two. So that was quite a time for you. You had just won the Rail tournament on May 31st, and then on June 2nd you won the Battle for Iraq at 17:19:49 and the Dueling Club barely five hours later at 22:41:32. That certainly must have been an emotional high for you! It was a great time. I was confident around that time I was going to win my first tournament with Battle of Iraq but I didn't expect to win the Rail tournament after dropping the first 2 games. The team just wanted to make it respectable. As for the dueling club, again I lost the first game in the best of 3 final so to win that too was just icing on the cake. I had tried many tournaments and failed to even get past the first round, that I was beginning to wonder when or even if I would ever get a tournament win. To get 3 in such a short time was a real boost to my confidence level. My wife must have wondered why I was so happy . I even posted it on Facebook, and I very rarely post that kind of thing in status updates. Getting a tournament win was a big goal of mine, to get 3 is far above what I had ever hoped for. It's one hell of a story! I wish it would happen to me... Well, that pretty much wraps it up. Any final words: something you'd like to see more of/less of in tournaments or on CC in general? A shout-out to a friend? I know lots of people work hard on tournaments that they create and a number work very hard resurrecting tournaments but I wish we wouldn't end up with so many abandoned tourneys. If you're gonna start one, see it through even if you hate it. Its a learning experience, if you don't enjoy it don't do it again but don't punish the folks who signed up in good faith to play. My rant for the day Anyone reading, the Pig Renters are still looking for new members to fill our sty. Come have fun in the mud! Oh, one final question: So how much does it cost to rent a pig? Sorry that is between us and the customer. We don't discuss the costs in public. As they say, if you have to ask, then you can't afford to rent. Well Dibbler, it's been tons of fun talking to you! Thank you for your time, and good luck in all your future endeavours!
show: Get Your Own Interview
One concluding note: when I volunteered for this project, I offered to interview "all of the tournament winners." How naive I was! I had no idea what a staggering number of tournaments there really are. Now I know there is no way I will be able to get to everyone. I intend to publish one or two interviews in every edition of the Dispatch, but even so I will probably only get to talk to about 5 percent or so of all the winners. My approach will be partially random and partially targeted. Some will be chosen because of their fame or amazing stats, some will be chosen because I find the tournament they were in to be unusual or especially interesting, and many will be chosen completely at random. I will pay special attention to those that are winning a tournament for the very first time. If you are looking forward to telling the story of the exciting tournament that you were just in and want to be on my list, please feel free to PM me any time. Dukasaur .

This is our regular look at just a few of the tournaments currently in sign-ups:mcshanester29 is one of a number of tournament organisers who is diligently working his way through the list of CC maps, organising a tournament on each. His popular MC's List of Maps 1 vs 1 franchise has so far reached Brazil and British Isles . I'm no rambling gambler, but I wouldn't mind a bet that Cairns Coral Coast will be along sometime soon.Last Man Standing by anamainiacks is taking signups until 10th July. A series of terminator games will be held on Ireland, Madness, High Sea and Chinese Checkers until there is just one survivor. If you like to see a well researched premise for a tournament, then Journeys of Discovery - 6: David Livingstone could be for you. Fellow Devonian DaveH has created a triples tournament which embodies Livingstone's infamous hunt for the source of the Nile. Another tournament with a lot of hard work in the design phase is Swiss Style Tournament by OliverFA . Oliver is looking for 256 entrants to play in a swiss bracket style. Fewer players are needed for the wonderfully titled Pig Renters Middle Ages Grand Melee . Dibbler was looking for a further 23 competitors when I last checked. This event consists of terminator battles on the Middle Ages map - the players with the greatest number of terminations in each round will progress. The limited edition World Cup map has inspired a whole batch of events, these tend to be small and fill quickly so have a browse in the create/join thread. Note that if these tournaments are still ongoing after the map availability expires, any remaining games will have to be played on an alternative. I hope you choose to join these wonderful tournaments and if you don't like any of these then go to the Create/Join a Tournament or Tournaments Tab and take a look at the other tournaments that are waiting to be filled. If you can’t wait for one of these to fill and want to get some tourney action now, check out the Requests for Immediate Players section of the tournament forum.
WCCL Series Part II by Angola show: WCCL Series Part II
Five vignettes to get you through this edition of the WCCL tournament update.Vignette 1 If I'm going to participate in a tournament at ConquerClub , I like to actually play games, but for some reason, eight folks chose to be managers in this particular tournament. Some joined because they are leaders of new clans, some joined because they are nerds (they like fantasy football and baseball ) and some joined because they are OCD (they like to manage things, apparently). At any rate, I like to do all of the things listed above, so, managers, don't hate me for type-casting you. Anyway, it's a diverse group of CC players that chose to be WCCL managers: mc052025 (THE Clueless), dman007 (Tonka's Truck Co), TheSaxlad (Saxy's United), Icepack (Blood Farmers), pearljamrox2 (Guerrilla Gorillas), alt1978 (Bacon-ators), gradybridges (Whedon's Warriors) and Fircoal (Johto Mafia). "I didn't join right away," pearljamrox2 said, "but after a day or two I came back to it. ... I like doing drafts and auctions. I also am very aware of the CC community, and I have a pretty good idea of who is who. ... I play plenty of games normally, so this was a chance for me to have a little fun, without adding to my game load." Seems like a fair idea. And now for alt1978 's (or Nuke Laloosh 's) take: It seemed like an opportunity to sit on the bench and take notes in a notebook as some of the best players on the site played some of the toughest boards in the game.Vignette 2 It's draft time, baby! This is Dick Vitale , your favorite CC announcer here to tell you about the diaper dandies in this, the weakest of NBA drafts, err, CC drafts ever! We hope for lots of trades to spice things up. Despite all the Euros being taken early, that doesn't mean this is a weak draft - unlike the NBA version! "Well, I will admit, I didn't have a real plan," said pearljamrox2, speaking for the Cavaliers and the Timberwolves.Fircoal agreed, pulling a TrailBlazers. "Try to do my own stats and hope people did theirs differently so I could snatch all the bargain picks," she said. Not to say, pearl or Fir were the only ones, by any means, who knew there would be such chaos between the managers? I did, but then again I'm omnipresent. Anywhoo, Icepack seemed to have a plan for everything. "Actually, my draft game plan was to put up certain individuals who I knew other teams were interested in," he said. "And drive up the price - way up!." And your now annual alt1978 quote: Before the draft started, the Miami Heat were in the middle of a seemingly unstoppable playoff run, so I came with the "Big Three " approach. Had I known Dallas was going to win in 6, I may have come at the draft differently, but I'm stoked with the squad I was able to pick up. If alt is lucky, ESPN will declare his Miami Heat a dynasty, despite them not having won anything.Vignette 3 Ah, the old mid-draft change-up. It proves the greatness of any drafting manager, because it shows they can adapt to market differences. If I would've been a business major, I could probably understand this part better, but our fearless managers handled it well. "Once I hit six players, there was at least four or five rounds left," gradybridges said. "I only had 33 points. I figured people would use their money and be stuck with the privates ... turns out I was right." It wasn't just letting the low ranks go, though, it was also letting the other managers screw with each other. "After seeing the clustercluck that was the first round," Fircoal said, "I decided that letting all of the managers screw each other's prices up probably was the best idea." alt1978: I don't have a super-computer cranking out numbers in my basement, running 323 spreadsheets simultaneously like icepack, but my single print out with highlighter notes seemed to get me through the rounds.Vignette 4 Now, once you finally figure out your team, deciding who will actually play doubles, triples and quads is another matter. "Most of the players had played together before," Icepack said. "I came up with 3-4 different groups early on so we could 'test' the home games, get some feedback from players, and ended up placing most of them in teams they were already familiar with." While Icepack was thinking ahead, others waited until after the draft to decide. "I had 2 Colonels (Hook2 and seamusk), who I knew could lead," gradybridges said. "As well as benga and a strong tourney winner in shoop76. I wanted to split those players up and have them lead and use their home maps as our home maps." alt1978: That would be classified information that could damage my team's chances in later rounds -- if the details surrounding my dart board were to be made public.Vignette 5 Now that that is all out of the way, we can get down to the fact that the team I'm on is most likely going to win - shame on the other managers for failing to draft me. Anyhoo, some of the managers are excited about their prospects in the early going. "It is very early to judge performance," pearljamrox2 said. "But I was happy with the team attitude. My players seem enthusiastic about being a team, and they all seem to be helpful and responsive." Other managers are quick to point out how successful they've been, however, as their teams are rolling early. "So far we've won the round, 6-0 with three games undecided," Fircoal said. "So ... I'm pretty juiced about my team's performance." You know who is more juiced? Icepack. (Author edit: Or at least he should be, because I'm about to be 1-2 in my games, delivering our squad victory with that one win.) "We've had some luck on our side with the drops, I know some people felt that way anyway," he said. "Our performance has been great - I think a few minor changes here and there and we can be much stronger overall." alt1978: Absolutely tenacious. Overcoming a set of obstacles that would have made Candide step back and do a double take, our squad has battled back from the brink of defeat to hold a 4-3 lead with two games still sitting in the balance. OK. No more alt1978. He went from funny to cliche mode in the span of four Vinegettes. Jesus, it's like Derek Jeter suddenly took over his body. Wait, he said one more funny thing. alt1978: ... keeping them together from dastardly managers like mc05025 .
Hello, folks! Fun fun fun for Issue 50! OliverFA brings you the next "Classic"; one whose asses are highly regarded in the speed world. In addition, I've interviewed
cairnswk about his map, Trafalgar.
Aside from that, the Foundry has been slightly more abuzz since last issue, so instead of a Foundry Talk topic, I've instead given you a link to the Foreman's recent discussion topic. Also, make sure to check out the
Foundry Assistants Announcement , the
Foundry Announcement Index , and, of course,
Map Surveyors .
Victor SullivanFoundry Executive Drafts / Design Briefs [Discussion] by MrBenn Classic Review – Doodle Earth by Oliver F.A. show
Nowadays, the Foundry is plenty of life. We enjoy a continuous stream of creativity and talent. Thanks to the effort of dedicated mapmakers, new additions are quenched regularly. And many more maps are in the works. But there are also maps that were created long ago. Maps that despite having been with us for long time still feel fresh like the first day. Every day, many games are played on those maps. Those maps are true jewels that have stood the test of time. They are real Classics . They deserve our attention despite the time that has passed since they were created. Or maybe because of that.Doodle Earth by Evil DIMwit Hello fellow CCers and welcome to a new review of a celebrated classic! Today’s map is Doodle Earth . All of the previous maps I have reviewed have had a differentiating idea that added to the game enjoyment and complexity. Doodle Earth also has a killer concept. But in this case, the concept is simplicity . No special regions, no original rules, no elaborate mechanics. Just the beautiful simplicity of a hand drawn world map divided into a few regions. Look at the map. Isn't it pretty? It is said that nowadays the world gets smaller and smaller. Looking at this map, that seems to be true. With only 18 regions, that’s a small world! But don’t think that such small size means that the map lacks something. It has everything from the Classic map: A “big” Asia, a relatively easy to hold Africa, important choke points, and even the relatively isolated Austr(al)ia. It is like getting the Classic map and applying a smaller level of detail. Consequently this map is ideal for a fast game with all the elements but shorter duration, like, for example, a speed game. What? You have never tried a speed game? Maybe you should. This map is ideal for such games. The map style also deserves a special mention. Drawn like if a kid had made it, the map is everything but serious. I always laugh when I look at the reinforcement legend. All those people together holding hands. How can I attack my enemy after seeing such a peaceful image? And yet there is no other option if you want to win! It's also good to know that Sarah has a desert named after her, and that Austria is not in Europe. All these years I have been fooled by my teachers! Maybe the biggest critique that can be made about this map is that being so small, it is very susceptible to luck strikes . With so few troops, getting lucky makes a big difference. Sometimes in 8 player games some of the players never get the chance to make their first move, as they get eliminated before it’s their turn. But we all feel lucky from time to time, don’t we?If you want a simple map for a change, but with all the key elements, Doodle Earth is your map! Map Spotlight: Trafalgar by Victor Sullivan show
For big issue 50, I got the pleasure of interviewing the esteemed mapmaker, cairnswk , about his recent return to the Foundry and his revived 29th map, the Battle of Trafalgar :Click image to enlarge. Sully : Map number 29...wow. What made you come back to the Foundry after your brief hiatus post-Cricket?cairnswk : I got tied up with uni study, and probably needed to take a break from CC mapmaking. Several months ago there was some very poor behaviour on my part (and I consider from others also) which caused me to "bin" the map. It was partially complete graphically then. For this behaviour i apologise to the Foundry. Behind that all however, there was always a desire to complete this map so that the copious hours that I and others had put into it was not wasted. Right now i have the time to spend on it for a few weeks to move it along.Sully : So, the Battle of Trafalgar? What is the story behind it? And what made you think to do a map of this battle specifically? I know I've never heard of it... cairnswk : Nelson's column in Trafalgar Square in London both commemorate this Battle. I've been there & stood beside it. It gives one a real sense of British history, and the importance placed on this Nelson Victory in the Battle of Trafalgar . I wanted to do this map because of the importance of that battle, but also because it was a naval battle, and nearly all of CC's maps are majority land-based - another "stretching the boundaries" of what is possible, which seems to be one of my skills.Sully : Besides its supersized-ness and its well-known brand name, what do you think this map brings to the table that others may not?cairnswk : Thank goodness for super-sizing. The map had been previously considered too cramped with its ships and cannon and lines going everywhere. If super-sizing had not come along...who knows! It brings to the table several things:a fine addition to CC's stable of maps a unique naval battle for all naval fans/players as with every other map, another opportunity for conquest, team games, and medals the gameplay is not totally remarkable as there are only assaults and bombardments possible, but perhaps it will be epic - only beta will test that and not an anchor in sight Sully : How is this map similar and/or more different from your previous creations?cairnswk : It is similar to Pearl Harbour in that connection lines are used between "territories" instead of "the territory mass"; ships (or rather ice-cream cones as one observer stated) upon a painted sea; not a skerrick of land in sight. Setting it apart from all my other maps, i think the overall design is much more "together" but quite different than previous maps. The map looks and feels every bit nautical - the rope borders, the rear of the ship Victory in the legend, the curve of the lower right legend outline seems almost bow-like, the use of weather line and lee line in gameplay.Sully : Since February of '07 you haven't even played 600 games! More interested in making maps than playing on them, or are you a more relaxed, casual CC-er?cairnswk : The creative art process is far more challenging for me than the skill in winning games. As such I have no real desire to conquer every map or every other player. Also, there are other games that i enjoy dabbling in like the Tycoon series.Sully : Why do you like mapmaking so much that you would make 28+?cairnswk : Once again, the art process. As for 28+...if there is a niche that one can fill, then i believe one should try to do as much as possible towards that goal.Sully : Do you think cairns finally has found his mojo again? cairnswk : Ah! "The mojo". I think my mojo comes in the form of this creativity, plus perseverance in life. Some of that mojo died also when i purchased Photoshop CS5 only to find it won't run on my computer as the computer needs upgrading. So i was frustrated by not being able tom update my software process also. I don't know that its back fully, but i can only try to achieve. Getting the new idea for "The Spanish Armada " has been good. I don't' know if i want to re-visit any other of my projects in the "dead bin" - they're probably best left alone to die.Sully : Well, thanks for being willing to be interviewed!cairnswk : My pleasure!
Welcome to some more Clan action as we have the requisite round-up of events in our respective Cup briefings, Bogan rants at the injustices of the kangaroo courts as a duet to his new home, Blackknight looks at policing within clans and Master Fenrir tackles an exciting way to reach the top of the totem pole in CC.
Also, keep an eye out everyone as we reach the
Clan League 3 Finale where we have an exciting battle on our hands between 2 clans who should know each other pretty well by know after battling often over the last year, in both league and cup competitions. Agents of Chaos have jumped to favorites in popular opinion after being ranked Third in Div C at the beginning of their Campaign and while this came courtesy of comprehensive wins over Empire and Kort, Immortal Assassins have been similarly impressive in topping their group ahead of the selfsame AoC before thence overcoming Mythology and progressing to the final after overcoming The Spanking Monkey's in a tough encounter.
In the mix as well is some
Spring-cleaning in the Clan forums as we now have an exclusive sub-forum for
Challenge Requests to streamline the clan scene in a similar fashion to the Tournament forums.
Leehar Clan Executive Conqueror's Cup 2 - Quarterfinal by Leehar (Nemesis) show
Welcome to the third round of an enticing CC2 we've had so far Here's the updated bracket on events so far: And without further ado, lets get to the preview of the battles as they stand: vs The Horseman of the Apocalypse vs. Agents of Chaos - #1 Seeded Thota have it all to play for against a strong AoC outfit that have made it all the way to the Clan League 3 Finals . That double-duty may actually endanger the Agents as they'll be wary of fighting on two fronts and worried of losing in both as they must still be considered underdogs after playing in Div 2B in Clan League 2 and falling at the first hurdle in the inaugural edition of the Conqueror's Cup . However, Thota must be similarly cautious as they faltered somewhat at the same stage in last years competition when they were pushed all the way by a spirited Nemesis outfit to win the tie-breaker after a dead-heat at 20-20. Early score in this duel however? 2-1 to Thota vs Legends of War vs. The Spanking Monkeys - The Last meeting between these 2 esteemed clans was almost 3 years ago when Tsm burst onto the clan scene with a strong 34-26 victory. The fortunes of both clans have ebbed and flowed since then, with the monkey's having lost once in a mammoth 39-41 battle against Thota, and giving another strong performance in the Clan League after eliminating Top 3 clan Tofu in those Quarterfinals , before losing to Immortal Assassins in the semi's in another tense scoreline of 10-9. LoW's results have taken a different albeit still similar turn with defeats only to the self-same Thota (twice) and a blimp on their radar against Outlaws & Highwaymen, before overturning that result only 3 months later in the first round of CC1. Now they meet again, and while LoW did well last year at the same stage in the competition as 4th seeds when overcoming the then #5 in the form of Immortal Assassins, they now are in that same position against an unforgiving now #4 in Tsm, who've started well to take an early 4-3 lead. vs. Knights of the Round Table vs. Fraternal Order of Exceptional Drinkers - Defending Champions Kort face a tough challenge against Foed who pulled off the stand-out performance of the last round in upsetting 6th seeded Immortal Assassins. With Kort having started somewhat slowly in the competition but still comfortably facing off the challenge of G1 in the second round, the spotlight must most definitely now be on Foed who have a wonderful run of late in overcoming legion, aod, lotz, dbc and now IA as the feather in their caps so far. The main worry for Kort perhaps is that they haven't often been comfortable in the guise of firm favorites after their run to the title last year being mostly from an underdog role, and being upset in the Clan League Semi's against AoC. We look forward to an exciting semi-final then as the newest entrants into the top 8 take on the clan still hungry to retain their title. And again Kort is favoured with a 4-3 lead vs. Empire vs. The Odd Fellows Union - Empire who made easy-meat of Nemesis in the blow-out match of the 2nd round, face off against 2nd seeded Tofu who will be tougher to swallow yet still had a much harder time of it when pulling off the closest win of the previous round against Bofm. Tofu will be without their stand-out leader in the form of Chariot of Fire who's still on a 6 week sabbatical that should end midway through this challenge so that he can pull off a super-sub performance, while Empire should be firing on all cylinders from the get-go, and looking to get a strong start for the second successive challenge. However, much was expected of Empire at the same stage of this competition last year when they came in as 3rd seeds against then 6th seeded kort, before falling to those eventual champions, so there should be omens aplenty for this duel. Current score is tied at 2-2
Newcomers Cup Finals Jigger1986 (GR) show
With the finals of the Newcomers Cup in full swing, 3 clans all fight for the title. As mentioned earlier those three clans are Grim Reapers, One Step Ahead and The Pack. Locked in two simultaneous wars of 43 game each this grueling final has caught the attention of the clan world and things just keep heating up. All three clans were confident in victory as there has been ample trash talk from all sides and as the current score will tell, its been an exciting game. Here are the scores,Reapers(16) ----The Pack(24) -War Thread vs Very close early on Grim Reapers took an slight advantage in the first round. The Pack fought hard on their home maps and eventually pulled ahead establishing an insurmountable lead, Great war!Reapers(20) ----One Step Ahead(16) -War Thread vs Definitely the closest war of the finals. Leads are held for no longer than a day as the balance shifts back and forth. It will be very interesting to see how this one ends up, though The Reapers look to have the advantage down the final stretch. The Pack(23) --One Step Ahead(13) -War Thread vs Very similar to the GR v PACK war, these two clans fought very hard early on leading to a close war. Since then however The Pack has pulled ahead and now hold a very strong lead. Another great war, and an impressive showing from the Pack. With the Newcomers Cup winding down The Pack have clinched the title and will soon have a well-deserved trophy to go with it. Congratulations to all the finalists, and especially to The Pack and Great_Ollie on a very impressive tournament. They have dominated the competition from round 1 to the finals and are we deserving of the title of Newcomers Cup Champions. I also want to send a thank you out to Benga for hosting this great tournament. It was very well organized and I'm sure it will become a staple in CC's multi-clan challenges.
Justice - The rum rant The Bogan Deity (BoFM) show
Devoted readers, stalkers, mullet fanciers, jealous haters, and other assorted CC pederast (or as freakns would say it pet a wrist). I'm going to start this months sermon with a little story that may or may not have happened. Staying at a luxury hotel in Saudi Arabia were representatives of three well know CC clans (in Saudi on other business), they all decided to get together for a drink(something that is not really viewed as a good thing by the locals). The three of them were in the hotel room sucking back on the illegal vitamins when the morality police busted in and hauled them off to jail. The following morning they were brought before the local sheik who was in a bit of a bind as to what he could do with the three law breaking westerners. Mindful of the extremists in his area the sheik couldn't just let the three chaps walk, nor could he be overly harsh on them. Western governments don't like their businessman citizens to be locked up for lengthy periods of time for breaking minor local rules. The sheik hit on an excellent plan, turns to the first infidel foreign business man (a Canadian member of BpB) and says "I could lock you up for life for breaking my countries rules, but since it is my 1st wifes birthday I will sentence you to 20 lashes and will grant you one wish." BpB chappie thinks about it for a minute, then asks for a pillow to strap to his back. In a stroke of bad luck the bloke doing the flogging took his religion rather seriously, so hit quite hard. By lash number 10 the pillow was all torn up, and by stroke twenty the BpB's back was a bloody mess. Justice served on the first foreign infidel, the sheik turns to the next foreigner (an American member of tofu). The sheik says the same thing to the tofu chap "I could lock you up for life for breaking my countries rules, but since it is my 1st wifes birthday I will sentence you to 20 lashes and will grant you one wish." Tofu boy isn't too stupid, after seeing what happened to the BpB he asks for 2 pillows. The religious chap doing the flogging got down to it, by stroke 15both pillows were ripped to shreds, and by stroke 20 the tofu chap had a back looking like flayed steak. Justice served once again, the sheik turns to the last foreigner(an Australian member of Kort). The sheik says to the Kort chappie "You come from one of the most beautiful countries in the world with lovely forests, beaches, desserts, camels, and oil. My 1st wife listens to a lot of Kylie, and savage garden, and thinks Mel Gibson is super hot. She would never forgive me if I don't help you out. Sadly I still must sentence you to 20 lashes, but I will grant you two wishes" Kort chap thinks for only a few seconds and says "For my first wish may I please have 50 lashes if it pleases your excellency." The sheik is rather surprised and replies "Not only from a lucky country but brave as well, how excellent you Australians are" Kort chap then says "for my second wish please tie the American to my back" There has always been friendly rivalry between clans, and when things get close in a clan war often there is a lot of mud thrown. Seems to me of late things have been getting very much out of hand, and over the top. With clans letting their personal issues, sour grapes, jealously or personalty conflicts spill out from the clan arena into general, and C&A. Not kewl kids, not kewl at all. Members of the pirates have been put on notice. We the clan and clan leadership group will support them to hell and back if someone starts a fight with them, but anyone in the pirates wanting to start shit and run their mouths off in a churlish and poor sportsmanlike manner is on their own. We prefer to do our talking on the battle field, and with the amount of reputable clans that are scared to take us on, I think its working. Challenge to other clans, do the same if you have the stones. Let your game play, not what you say be who you are. Frankly I've been disgusted (coming from a man that thinks nude midget goat wrestling followed by bisexual camel porn should be prime time, that is saying a lot) with the way some members of more than a few clans (funnily enough mostly those that where on the losing side of close clan wars) have been carrying on in C&A. Witch hunts should have died out when most people acknowledged the evidence that the world is round. The naked pain that I've seen in some players posts trying vainly to re write history to make it appear that they won, touches a nerve deep inside my black thorny heart. I want to give them a hug and a sweetie, before I give them a good kicking and tell them to grow up and quite crying. This is a war game site. All is fair in love and war. If you really think an opposing clan is breaking the rules, rather than dragging shit out in public forum to try and make them look bad (hint makes y'all look like pompous windbags verging on the non functional end of the autism spectrum) how about opening an e-ticket? Easy isn't it? Logical even. Devoted fans, I have a confession to make I'm recovering from an addiction to using brackets in all their myriad forms and shapes. There is something ultra sexy about a ( or maybe a > or possibly even a [ followed by a {. I'm seeing someone about my addiction, and hope to one day be able to live with my strange addiction, I've been told to not expect a cure. So please keep me in your prayers, or sacrifice a chicken for me. No body is perfect (myself excluded, I only make mistakes to make people feel I can relate to them), clans are full of people.... Obviously sometimes clans, and their members get things wrong. Say things they shouldn't have, point fingers and loudly screamed wild abuse, when sitting on ones hands and whistling would have been better. It happens. Clans are a great way to enhance ones time on CC. I believe in less rules rather than more rules. The more rules there are, the more time you have to spend reading up on the rules when you could be playing the game. I believe that clans and their members need to have a big, BIG cup of shut the f*ck up and think. Then start acting only after they have thought a little. Yes I know there are some out there incapable of thought, the smarter clans will always need cannon fodder. I best be off now, need to take my turns in a hurry, there is a great special on the lifestyle channel about angora rabbit breeding, that I just don't want to miss
Spice up your clan - Clan Tribunals by BlackKnight_6 (TNC) show
This was meant to be a great piece of investigative journalism. For the first time in my short dispatch writing career I decided to do some research and get material from other clans before I went to print. Here was my initial question: What do clans do about internal discipline? I'm talking about several serious military CC crimes, things like repeated turn missing, like insulting the clan leaders in a game, like posting strategy on public chat by accident, like not joining clan war games. Serious stuff! We had, in the New Crusade Clan, one occasion where people started flaming on our discussion forum and things got out of hand. How do the ancient clans of CC cope with this, I wondered. I imagined great trials where clan leaders met in secret, the accused being hauled before this star chamber to explain their actions and repent or be kicked from the clan. Did the other clans have this? If so, how could the New Crusade do the same or better? So I sent out some feelers. Here were some of the answers I got back. Here's Rodion of KORT Rodion wrote: I've never seen a problem inside my clan grow to the point it needed some sort of tribunal. I don't know of any rigid behavioral rules we have other than disliking when clan members publicly state they don't like something about our clan (that should be worked privately).
Or the Great Master Fenrir himself (of Hardballs fame) Master Fenrir wrote: There is no tribunal or clan code. For the most part, whenever a decision of this sort needs to be made,
danryan , my FOED co-leader, and I discuss it via PM conversation and then implement whatever our final decision is. If a player has an issue with another player, either danryan or myself or both will receive a PM, and we will attempt to work it out together via PM conversations, as we'd prefer not to muddle the light-hearted vibe within our clan forum.
Or here's eddie2 of AKA eddie2 wrote: mine is simple we have a easy going clan the only thing ik kick players out for is if they are missing turns with no explanation they get 2 warnings then booted.
I know, I know. You are thinking "and..."? Or at least I was. All so gentlemanly, sensible, level-headed and decent. And maybe that's how it should be. Maybe not everything needs to be spiced up in different ways. When I think about our flaming incident in the clan it was handled like that with a lot of back channel communication and finally one of the members agreed to go his own way. Which left me without a column for the last issue. So this column became my non-column. A bit like an episode of Seinfeld in which "nothing happens". But it wasn't all for naught. Master Fenrir brought up another issue, a common clan problem perhaps if you fight lots of wars.Master Fenrir wrote: The largest "problem" that I've had to deal with is with the way that I organize our wars. A few wars back, a few clan-mates raised an issue with playing a war exclusively with assigned games. I started a thread in our forums to discuss the issue. Most were happy with the assigned games, but there were several who still wanted a looser way to handle things because they didn't like getting "stuck" playing only certain games. I completely understood where they were coming from.
Now, how do you deal with that? At the end of my hundredth game of D Day in a clan war I'm beginning to feel a bit stuck on Omaha Beach too! Next issue I'll have some suggestions on how to "spice up" the assigning of members to maps and wars - I hope!
HARDBALLS with Master Fenrir(FOED) show
There are many ways to achieve notoriety on Conquer Club. When you think of score, you usually first think of King_Herpes who holds CC's highest score ever, a confirmed 6,351 and an unconfirmed 6,373. When you think of medals, you think of tournament beasts such as HighlanderAttack (111, but with 209 tournament wins), danryan (125, but with 52 tournament wins), and Blitzaholic (114, but with 79 tournament wins). However, there are other less measurable ways to become CC-famous. One such way is by mastering the art of account sitting. This thought first occurred to me when I was still rather inexperienced. The first two players to ever ask me to account sit were DarthBlood and ZONDA . At the time, I was hovering around the captain rank and they were both majors. I was stunned that two higher ranked players would trust me with their turns. With only a few hundred games under my belt, I like to think that they looked deep into my soul and saw the potential for me to become one of the best account sitters this site has ever seen. They weren't alone in this insight into my account sitting abilities. Looking through a document I have saved onto my desktop, some 60-plus people have trusted me with their passwords to take their turns while away on vacation or dealing with a real life emergency. People sought me out. Was all of their requests legitimate? That's hard to say. Sixty people is a lot. Part of me suspects that several of them intentionally exposed themselves to children with runny noses, or developed dangerous intravenous drug habits just to increase the odds of getting "sick" so that I might take their turns. But back to my journey. Roughly 15 months ago, L M S went on vacation and asked me to sit his account. At this time, I was in the Immortal Assassins and he was in a now dissolved Outlaws & Highwaymen, and they were in a clan war against the Legion . This was prior to clan wars receiving tournament privileges and games with the pretty blue game labels, so they were simply set up as private games. Making an honest mistake, I sat for LMS in those games. The response was quick.Subject: ++The Legion++ vs O&H (32-28) of 60pts (Complete) Snowgun wrote: Oh, and if you guys could cover your turns with people from your clan that would be nice. Didn't think getting double teamed by you and IA was in the contract.
Hopscotcher wrote: well hello mr. fancy pants!
L M S and Fenrir are buds, so complain to a deity who cares!
Culs De Sac wrote: we just bitter.. he covered 2 turns..and his dice were insanely hot.... i think he killed about 24 troops combined and lost 3 troops total on his first go around of turns..thats insane
Snowgun wrote: Well we understand that but if you guys could refrain from it in THESE GAMES from now on that would be great.
Unless you guys
need to pull in brigs from other clans to handle us?
It seemed that the clan world was finally starting to take note. I pictured the Legion members huddled together in a poorly lit cavern discussing the war. "What do we do about this Fenrir guy?" "I dunno. That guy can really sit." "You think he'd sit for us if we asked?" I had received a small taste of sitter stardom and my thirst was not quenched. Some time later, the exact same thing happened where I slipped up and took a turn in a private war game against Mythology for L M S.Subject: Myth vs FOED 29-31 {FINAL} L M S wrote: We are looking forward to this one, should be tons of fun and very close...except we have a secret weapon.
MTIceman41 wrote: Master Fenrir covering your games then must be the weapon
Coming from MTIceman41 , an opponent who has always played solid games against me, I was flattered. I was slowly managing to spread the knowledge of my sitting skills one clan at a time. A few more wars and I might be recognized as one of the top sitters ever to grace CC with moves from more than one account. At this point in our story, we fast-forward to the recent past. I have left the Immortal Assassins and joined the Fraternal Order of Exceptional Drinkers . The clan world has also seen a rising star in josko.ri of the Knights of the Round Table clan. Rumors of Josko's account sitting abilities quickly spread during the Tofu vs Kort war . His sitting won him further acclaim when Kort beat a previously undefeated THOTA to win the Conqueror's Cup . This continued through the Kort vs G1 war leading to a Cheating & Abuse report lodged against Josko and others for questionable sitting tactics. Am I jealous of all of the attention that Josko's sitting has received? Maybe. A part of me says that the attention is really unfair, though. In the C&A thread, a large part of the complaint was that players would "leave" turns for Josko to take. I've never had anybody leave me anything. My sitting reputation has been hard earned as I patiently wait for my dear e-friends to experience some misfortune that takes them away from their keyboards. There were a few reasons given to justify this leaving of turns. One of them was severe mental exhaustion. When I first read this, I actually recoiled from my monitor and asked aloud, "What kind of prima dona, Real-Housewives-of-Orange-County reason is that?" It was then, though, that I remembered that Rodion is an attorney. Having experience in the law field, I could understand how such a career could be pretty stressful and mentally taxing, so I gave Rodion the benefit of the doubt there. However, another reason given was that they didn't have enough time to discuss their turns during waking hours. Unacceptable. If television's Dr. Gregory House has taught us nothing else, it is that you do not go to bed and leave an important diagnosis (move) to other doctors (clanmates). You take an excessive amount of Vicodin (Vicodin) until you have a moment of clairvoyance. A bit annoyed with this unfair advantage, I decided to spend some time with our Community Manager, AndyDufresne . A great source of contention within the C&A thread was which circumstances warranted account sitting and which did not. So I gave Andy several scenarios and asked him to respond.Master Fenrir, AndyDufresne wrote: Scenario : I have a hot date with a girl who is a clear 10. I've left 30 minutes to take my turns before I get ready, but then I notice that I'm out of hair wax and I need to use that 30 minutes to go to the store and get some new hair wax so that I can look fresh for my date. Can I have somebody sit for me?It sounds like a first date. Though first dates are important for making good impressions, I think in this scenario you would really be neglecting your CC relationships by even going out and not taking your turns yourself. You can't be an absentee lover in your games---they'll know it isn't you, and they'll feel like you are abandoning them for some 'new hot babe' who just burst onto the scene as a new plaything. Take my, and Stephen Stills', advice: Love the One(s) You're With . Scenario : Let's say the hot date is with twins. One is a 10, the other wasn't the favorite, so she has attention seeking issues, which makes her kind of annoying, so her personality brings her down to a 9. So I have a date with a 9 and a 10. Can I have a sitter then?By looking for a date with multiple partners, it is pretty clear that you aren't looking for a long term relationship, but something of an enjoyable quickie. While certainly something to strive for, you'll probably end up with neither of them at the end of the night, leaving you with nothing but empty pockets. If you really are that into multiple partners and quickie, really, Speed Games are the way to go. Imagine Speed Ass. Doodling all night? One after another, all to your heart's content. Scenario : Suppose that on said date, I spend a good 4 hours of the night fist pumping. When I wake up the next morning, my right arm is so sore that it’s practically useless. I could attempt to take turns with my uncoordinated left hand and arm, but this would likely result in several mis-clicks that could cost my team a game. Can I have a sitter then?First off, fist pumping is a dangerous hobby---it'll probably lead to FPS, or Fist Pumping Syndrome. I highly encourage you to leave the fist pumping for the professionals who are trained for such things. By not going out at all, and avoiding FPS, you can ensure yourself a long and health life, both on CC and in Real. Scenario : I'm walking past a construction site on my way home and a crane topples and crushes my legs. I'm still conscious, so I call 911 and the operator says that they're busy and won't be able to send me any help for 45 minutes. I could take turns from my phone, but I fear that something like losing 14 vs. 4 might push me over the edge. Can I get a sitter? While crane toppling is startling more common than one may immediately think , really what you should be doing is taking your turns. Why, you may ask? You say you are in pain? Well, over the last few decades, scientists and doctors have studied the best responses to painful stimuli. One of the most productive methods to respond to pain is quite already commonly experienced by most of us---the groan, the yell, the curse---any audible expulsion. So, not only will taking your turns help take your mind of your horribly crippled body, if you do get a few bad rolls, yell-out at how 'unrandom' the dice are, and you'll find your pain easing away as your mind shifts. Scenario : Few people know this, but I spend my nocturnal hours fighting crime. Suppose that one night, I have to spend more time than estimated to run down a particularly speedy burglar who has fled into the night. Can I use my Fen-Fone (patent pending) to text somebody to sit for me?First, as straight and goodhearted as you and your actions may be, vigilantes are not the appropriate response to crime. Though police departments, the justice system, and other related organizations may be slow to response, in a civil society like the one we all live in, vigilantes have no place. Vigilantes in fact usually endanger the more lives than they save. So the correct answer to this scenario is hang-up Kickass costume before this scenario could ever happen. You'll thank yourself. And civil society will thank you as well. Scenario : A brutal plague hits the Earth. All women except for one are sadly dead. All men except for me are left sterile. It would be a good idea for me to immediately start insuring that our population survives before the sole female survivor is captured and forced into some weird role as Goddess of Fertility in this new civilization. Can I get a sitter then?It sounds pretty dire, and probably is. But in this dark-wasteland of a world we would live in, CC would shine as a beacon of our old world, a reminder of how things were. While I agree that the continuance of the human race is key, every effort must similarly be taken to keep those beacons of our old world active and shining. If you have any humanity left in your body after this plague, perhaps rather than allowing the sole female survivor to be captured by others, or forcing her to be your own personal sex slave in the guise of human race continuance, you should really sit down and have a talk with her. What if she isn't down for being the next Eve? It has to be her choice, and by the sound of this scenario, it sounds like TMT, typical male takeover. So let her refuse, as she probably will. What will you be left with then? Oh look, there is a bright shining beacon of our old world welcoming you into its arms, and it will nurture you as civilization comes to an end, and as the Earth reclaims its independence from. Enter that shining beacon. Enter CC. --Andy
"So let her refuse, as she probably will." Andy's jealousy aside, he does a fair job of proving my point. If me consensually and tenderly repopulating the planet isn't a good enough reason to have somebody sit for me, surely not having enough time to discuss strategy with teammates is laughable at best. Except I'm not laughing. If this is the case, I declare Jokso's sitting fame to be fraudulent. And Josko isn't the only one, though, don't get me wrong. We've all heard the rumors about some players, but either not enough evidence exists to lodge an adequate C&A report, or nobody has taken the time to compile it. I would do it, but I'm too busy watching my inbox in hopes that one of my clanmates is suffering from alcohol poisoning after a late Saturday night. The bottom line is, if there is ever a list of Top 10 Sitters and any of these players' names are listed above mine, I want asterisks next to those names.
