[SCSY] New Scoring System

Postby The Neon Peon on Thu Dec 25, 2008 9:24 pm

Concise description:
  • New Scoring system...

Specifics:
  • The way score is determined now: Loser's Score / Winner's Score x 20
  • The way the score would be determined: Loser's Map Rank on that Map and Settings / Same thing for the Winner x 20
  • Why? Well, just because I come to the site... and become a major by playing 100% AoR... Then I decide to play a Waterloo for once. My skill on Waterloo is definitely not that of a major. I am a new recruit on it (for this, all simple maps count as the same). So, I should not lose points based on how good I am on AoR, and only based on how good I am on Waterloo in comparison to the other person.
  • Take an average of map-rank and score, because just being able to play on CC helps in playing any new game type. Below are some similar settings that are combined to make things more carried over because of similarity in play style.
  • All simple maps count as one map.
  • Fog/No Fog count as the same setting.
  • Fort Settings count as the same setting.
  • Standard and Terminator count as one setting.
  • All team games count as one setting.

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • Reduces Specializing. Obvious as to why... if points are based on that map/settings, then anyone who specializes will have a lot more trouble doing so, especially from the fact of the low map ranks of his opponent (so, less of a sub-type of farming)
  • Points are given away more fairly. I should not take as many points from someone on a map like Waterloo, if all they played was Classic and are a field marshal because of it. I did not beat a field marshal, I beat someone more of a new recruit.

I know that there are some missing logs... two solutions:
1. Ignore this small amount of points since it will average out in one month if not less.
2. Keep the current scoring system and add this one, then after this one goes along, get rid of the old one. (what we are doing with ratings and feedback.) Besides, the old system is kept in the new system as overall score.

Sounds interesting. Might have genuine merit. I'd have to think on it further but at a glance it sounds reasonable.

I'm not 100% sure I understand exactly what you mean Peon, but if you mean what I understand, I like it. However, I do have a few questions...

How would you determine the overall score of a player?
  • Someone's score may be high in the maps/settings he plays, but since there's many maps hes' never even played once, he would be ranked at 1000 points in those? which means when making his average it would drop because he hasn't play half of the maps?
  • If I want to have a somewhat high overall score I need to play ALL maps and get around 2000 points on EACH ONE?
  • Would it be a better idea to add the points for ALL the maps and change the rankings accordingly? In which case if you have 50 maps, and you're at 1000 points on each of them, our current 1000 points for Private 1st class would be equivalent to 50,000? That would mean to make it to Major you'd need to have 100,000 points? and Field Marshal would need 225,000???
  • Maybe there could be a way to only count in for the average score those maps/settings where you've finished 5 or more games? But then specialization would be the way to go, since playing just one map/settings gives you have a bigger chance to be good at it, and keep rising in rank on it, and since the other maps wouldn't count for scoring until you play them the best would be to avoid them?
  • Perhaps there would be no such thing as an overall score? But rather a bunch of different scores and ranks in each map? Then on your profile page you'd have the ranks as we have the medals right now, and on each game you'd have the rank for that map/settings next to your name?
  • In case the last case applies (and I'm most inclined to that one)... Who would be Conqueror? Would there be a Conqueror for each map/settings?

Anyway, I think there's a lot of future to this idea, it would change the scoring almost completely, but maybe that's not a bad thing, I'm sure those people with high ranks right now have their own maps where they win a lot and where they can keep piling up the points, farmers can still invite players to their own little maps, and who knows, maybe the farmers guild could set one person to each map/settings and farm like crazy and be conquerors of all maps, since they seem to like doing that so much...
And to the competitive player it adds the challenge of achieving high ranks in many maps and settings.

I really like this thread, and I believe it could lead to a positive end, so Farmers, if you want to speak your mind, please do so in a way we can avoid trolling, flaming, derailing and all those nasty things that often arise when the farming issue (note I didn't say "problem") is mentioned. If you are concerned about this tampering with your precious points, then think of possible solutions, rather than throwing the whole idea away please.
