Fox & Hounds

Postby Halmir on Sat Dec 12, 2009 9:10 am

Concise description:
  • A new game type where all players are encouraged to gang up on one player. Sounds terrible so far huh? :) Inspired by the "one King versus 6 pawns" in Chess.

Specifics:
  • This would create a new game option alongside Terminator, Standard Etc. The host enables this option when creating a game.
  • The Fox plays against everyone else in a series of linked turns where only one opponent (in sequence) can move, whilst Foxy takes alternative turns. All players receive normal bonuses. As an example where Red is the Fox:
    Round 1
Red - 3 bonus, plays as normal
    Green - 3 bonus
    Round 2
    Red - 3 bonus
    Blue - 3 bonus
    Round 3
    Red - 3 bonus
    Yellow - 3 bonus
    etc
  • Scoring: The Fox gets double points for every player they can eliminate (hey it's going to be pretty tough for them though as everyone will want to kill them quickly!). A Hound who kills the Fox gets normal points but then becomes the Fox on the next turn.

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • A game type where you really need to think carefully about your strategy
  • chaos is fun :D

Further Options:
[*] Restrict this to experienced players only (50 games completed) to avoid points farming
[*] Restrict each player to only being able to play one of these games at once - otherwise a group of 8 devious players could set up a circle of these games and let everyone win in turn, gaining a large number of points extra
[*] Make it single points only for the Fox's kills, to avoid any inflationary aspects that double points brings (shame though!)

I like it, but no double points, I don't think that suits the game. Standard points and nice format I like it.

I agree. If we were to implement this, it would have to be setup something like a combination team game and standard game.

For the Fox, if he were to eliminate all the Hounds it would be like a standard win - [Fox gets X points for defeating Hound A, Fox gets X points for eliminating Hound B, Fox gets X points for eliminating Hound C, etc] The Fox is then rewarded for playing the game with more hounds, but is less likely to win.

For the Hounds, if they manage to kill the Fox it's like a team win. Total team points/Fox's points so each Fox would likely only gain 1-5 points from a win, because the gametype is so unbalanced.

I think the Fox should get X points in a style of Terminator.
When the fox is killed their points go to the last survivor.

In an 8 player game if all have precisely the same score
E.g. Fox 1 kills Hound 1 and 2 earning 40 points (6 players remain)
Hound 3 kills Fox 1 scoring 0 points but making it possible for Hound 3 to score points (5 remain)
Hound 4 kills Fox 2 scoring 0 points but making it possible for Hound 4 to score points (4 remain)
Fox 3 kills Hound 5 and 6 earning 40 points (2 remain)
Hound 7 kills Fox 3 scoring 20 points for that kill and 40 more for the 2 other dead foxes.

Otherwise Hound 7 would earn at most (4+5+20) 29 which would of course be unfair for him if he contributes to the killing of each fox.

You can't play this even with honour rules.

In a 4 player game, the order for round one is:

Player A
Player B
Player A
Player C
Player A
Player D

Meaning 6 turns per round even though there are only 4 players. So to play it with honour rules, you'd have to go:

Player A
Player B
Player C intentionally skips turn (1)
Player D intentionally skips turn (1)
Player A
Player B intentionally skips turn (1)
Player C
Player D intentionally skips turn (2)
Player A
Player B intentionally skips turn (2)
Player C intentionally skips turn (2)
Player D

So each "round" takes 3 rounds to play and requires players B, C, and D to skip 2 turns each.

You can't physically play it with more than 4 because players would be required to skip 3+ turns in a row and thus get kicked out.

Not to mention the points system doesn't support this being an option. At least 2 players would get screwed over in every game.

I think this could be fun but i believe that the advantage would go way in favor of the fox especially if there were spoils involved. This is because all the fox gets the same troops and has the same number of turns. If the fox gets a bonus the other team cant stack and he will get credit for that bonus every round so it is like everyone on a team having a bonus. Similarly the fox has the advantage in cards because he can get more cards every round and cash with much greater frequency. I do have one question would the fox start of with the same number of territories as the other team or would each player start with the same amount. If everyone starts with the same amount that might balance it but that would be based on the map. Also i can see this being taken advantage of if implemented where high ranks are the fox on a really complicated map with lots of bonuses and the hounds never stand a chance. Also only noobs would join as the team if it were the team vs fox because the idea of winning 5 or losing 20 is not good especially when you are at a disadvantage.

I'd think it needs to be same number of starting terrirtories for all. However it'd have to be in "Beta" for a while to prove that it's balanced, on some simple maps.

Got a quick question. What would happen if, for example, a hound accidentally kills another hound? Would that hound lose points for killing the other hound? or what?

Great idea....great as a game option. I'd play it. Let the mods determine how to award the points for this format, otherwise this one is...

The hounds kill each other as normal if they (unwisely) want to. The point of being the Fox is to get the turn bonus every time they play whilst only one opponent moves.

I think if this were to be implemented, some proper playtesting would be required - but I'm pleased that so many like it already! :D

You can't play this even with honour rules.

In a 4 player game, the order for round one is:

Player A
Player B
Player A
Player C
Player A
Player D

Meaning 6 turns per round even though there are only 4 players. So to play it with honour rules, you'd have to go:

Player A
Player B
Player C intentionally skips turn (1)
Player D intentionally skips turn (1)
Player A
Player B intentionally skips turn (1)
Player C
Player D intentionally skips turn (2)
Player A
Player B intentionally skips turn (2)
Player C intentionally skips turn (2)
Player D

So each "round" takes 3 rounds to play and requires players B, C, and D to skip 2 turns each.

You can't physically play it with more than 4 because players would be required to skip 3+ turns in a row and thus get kicked out.

Not to mention the points system doesn't support this being an option. At least 2 players would get screwed over in every game.

People wouldn' need to skip turns and risk deadbeating... they could start their turn and not deploy - an hour later they time out, and play passes on. This would have the added benefit of not taking so long as 24hrs for the 'skipped' turn...

Seems like some of you have gone so far as to talk about a format for a tournament that utilizes the concept of fox and hounds.

I'd like to see if there are supporters fo the original suggestion which asks that this be implemented as a new game setting.

I'd like to see it implemented.

Queen Herpes. Everyone who has posted in this thread has supported it. People suggesting a tournament for it means an honour based system, which isn't fair. Especially considering the points system

technically, not exactly, you can also skip a turn by 'beginning' your turn, and then do nothing for an hour (so don't deploy even)

your troops will just vanish, never to be seen again, and they wil not even add to deffered troops. and, i don't believe it counts as missing a turn as it wil just show 'player X ran out of time'

Yep, that would work.

We still run into the issue of points - the current points system doesn't support this, and we haven't hammered that out yet.

I'd be willing to play a test game with honour rules though - if it's not your turn according to F&H rules, you just start your turn and then let it expire. Anyone else interested?

That's 2 of us - it's not worth playing this with less than 4, so is anyone else interested? If we have 4 I'll set up a game.
