How do I take a screen shot?

Checked here because I have been losing Iberia a lot (my fault, just checking .. lol)

BUT how do you take a "screen shot"?????

There are various methods, but simplest (it works for me in XP) is ...
  • press the "Print Screen" key whilst looking viewing what you want to capture
  • open the graphics program of your choice (even Paint works)
  • paste
  • save the image to your hard drive
  • upload the image to the web
  • post to conquerclub and use an img tag like the one below for your image to appear in your post
Code: Select all

Hmm ... even that is not particularly simple. :)

Split this from the other topic because this question comes up alot.

Vista has a new "Snipping" tool that's an all-in-one screenshot-taker, for those of you with that software.

Using my Linux distribution I just press the PrintScreen button, and can specify which file format and quality I'd like it to be and where I want it saved. Really easy.

if you use FF theres a cool add-on called Abduction where you right click anywhere on a webiste and click "save as image..." then it saves the page as an image, then you just ahve to upload it to photobucket and away you go.

heres an example of what it does:

The only nice thing about a Mac is that zooming in and out on the desktop, but Apple's really just as bad as Microsoft. All they want is to sell you stuff until you're so dependent on them that they own you.

cmd-shft-4 gives you a cool little zoomable target to move around and frame up what you want to take a pic of and then capture it... presto, SCREEN SHOT!!! and as far as mac goes, they don't sell you "stuff"... they sell you a machine that has everything loaded onto it that you will ever need. you get a pc, and you have to run around to sites to download stuff to make your machine do things that a mac does right out of the box. the only programs i have ever loaded on my machine are photoshop, skype, adium... that's it... everything else is on my machine right out of the box... add an iphone to the mix, boom! it all works (ask my old lady)... with my phone, i can't even use half the crap, because it is all PC based and you have to plug in, etc, to do anything small like adding music, downloading pics or even transferring files via bluetooth... mac's are intuitive, pc's are a load of bugs and trouble...-0

True, however I find doing a one time installation being a superior choice over multiple use of Paint. :D

So you don't mind not having any real say in what programs you want on your computer? Not being told about security risks until the official fix is available a month after it was found? You don't mind having to send in your fancy iPhone and iPod and paying Apple just to get the battery changed?
You are indeed a very strange person.

No one has mentioned (or perhaps I missed it) that Bob will take snapshots for you of maps. I don't know how you can get the image if you wanted to do anything with it other than look at it in BoB - I imagine it's probably cached wherever browsers hide their files these days....

i can take a screen shot without adding a program, and that is what this thread is about!! the rest, i don't mind... i grew up with macs, and i'm in my mid 30's, so i have no plan on going to an inferior product now. and as far as sending stuff in to be repaired, takes 2 days at most, and usually, they will just replace it for you, because that's how apple rolls!!-0

p.s.-already stated i only add products to my machine that i need for my work... ever tried photoshop on PC? talk about a joke. and most, if not all the new software for photography is geared for macs, same as most software for advertising, art direction, creative agencies, etc... if i were a number crunching CPA, i'm sure i'd have a PC... but i'd still roll the bones on CC with my macbook!!

I guess it comes down to differences in philosophy then, I prefer being able to choose and having as much control over MY computer and the programs on it as possible, that's also the main reason why I left Microsoft behind, their products didn't allow me to have the control I wanted.
You just want it to work with as little hassle as possible. For me that's merely a nice bonus.

And if this is only about taking screenshots without additional programs Apple's nothing special, SuSe Linux does that as well, probably most other main distributions as well. And you don't need to buy a specific computer to use Linux, which is a huge advantage.
