Worry less about continents, worry more about getting a card every time. Worry most about eliminating losers and taking their cards.
Don't be like an egg, be like a small rock, or much better, a set of isolated medium-sized rocks.
Every turn, without fail, check how many territories each player has, and figure out if you will be able to eliminate the smallest guy this turn. If not, try to arrange things so that you are protecting a small group of his guys from everyone else, so that later, when the time is right, you can pounce.
What you are aiming for is the mid-turn set cash-in that fuels another shot at eliminating the loser, taking his cards, cashing in again, rinse, repeat.
