Why am I so bad at fog of war?

Postby 72o on Mon Aug 31, 2009 2:03 pm

This might belong in Q&A instead of here, but I'm hoping to get some strategy tips.

I get waxed every time i play fog of war, except for certain maps like AOR1 or Poker Club where it's inherent in the gameplay. World 2.1, Classic, etc., what I would call "standard" gameplay maps, I get beaten like a red-headed stepchild.

What do you guys do to win at FOW?

Well in fog ya gotta keep track of who is where & as the game progresses you've got to keep track of the game log. Try not to fight someone for the same bonus area early on unless ya can beat em quick. The game can be lost for ya in the 1st four rounds especially if no one is paying attention to the player building out of the way of everyone else. & when going on the offensive make sure you have enough to beat a big stack if ya bump into one or you have enough to fort where you need to fort to protect yourself from the counter attack. & If ya want to practice fog maps do it 1v1.

You could try taking advantage of everybody not knowing what you have. Invite poeple to attack your bonus by say puting a 5 stack on the border with a 30 behind it. That will catch you opponents off gaurd. Also if you when deploying your troops, do so to where people can't tell if you did so on one country, say increments of two on the same territ.

And try having a lot of 30 stacks, that usually helps

Yeah, it seems I always lose because my opponents somehow amass hundreds of troops behind their lines. I guess that's one of the keys to fog, don't keep your actual border fortified like you do in sunny games.

I'm not thin-skinned, so you can certainly voice your opinion. Obviously constructive criticism would be more appreciated than "you're an idiot", but I'll take what I can get.

You need to pay particular attention to the game log. If you can "read" it properly you will have a pretty good idea where people are. Also you need to hide you troops where others can't see them and move them to the front only when you need them.

I disagree with this strategy. I say keep your borders in strength. You disguise it by taking away your enemies "eyes". (hold the border terts) If you make your bonus to tempting to break whats the point of holding it. I play ALOT of fog. I'll pard with ya sometime if ya want.

Taking a snapshot at the end of each of your turns might help.

Invest in a good fog horn and keep an eye out for lighthouses, they'll steer you away from hitting jagged rocks, crags and such. Best of luck, send me a postcard!

Yeah that's what I do. And just slowly take a bonus region, hoping they don't notice.

1st bonus that is held in strength will often win. Taking your sweet assed time building usually will only kill you.

I don't mean like that slow. I'm mean to the point that your not endangering yourself with weak borders, because all your troops have been used to take territories.

BTW 72o. These strategies discussed thus far are basically for non-spoils games.

get BoB and take a snapshot as soon as you can at the start of a game - helps a hell of a lot, especially in card games. if you dont have mozilla or whatever then a screenprint works just as well i guess
had i been wise, i would have seen that her simplicity cost her a fortune

I never take snap shots...I just remember where everyone is, but I don't have more than 12-15 games going at once so its not that hard. But if you can't do that or you play 30+ games take a snap shot. I also rarely play 1v1 with fog because I find it pretty pointless unless you are playing certain maps.

As far as Fog of War goes, here are a few tips:

1. Stay to the sides of the maps as much as possible: Reducing the number of areas to attack from will strengthen both defense and attack concentration, espescially against opponents with big numbers of troops next to your borders.

2.Advance in a way to strategically scout or attack surrounding territories: This can be usually done by advancing up sides or surrounding and/or taking needed territories.

3. Build up when needed: Don't worry about getting territories as fast as you can. It is much better to advance steadily with a good amount of force than to advance quickly and expose yourself to a big counter attack and taking of the gained territories and more because of the weak defenses.

4. Keep territories adjacent to enemy territories at equal or greater strength: You don't want to make your territories look easy or be easy to take unless it's a trap.

5. Go after the smaller bonus region groups first: Though they give less bonus troops, they are usually easier to get and out of the way to keep you unnoticed. They are usually good bases to start off with.

6.Keep territories in groups: If you're stuck away from the sides and small bonus regions, get together and keep as many of your teritories as you can while cautiously making moves.

7. Attack other players' strongholds: If you notice a lot of the same enemy in one paticular area, it probaly means that they're a group and you should attack that group unless it would be bad strategically. If you have the chance to prnetrate a suspected bonus region that another player looks to have gained control of(game log would help to know if they did)and they can't effectively counter-attack back then attack that region so they can't get the bonus.

Other than that, it solely depends on the situation and players as to what would be the best way to win the game.
