Spamming to protest spam: NOT funny

Postby stahrgazer on Sun Jan 30, 2011 3:41 pm

Twice this week, I, and a multitude of other players, have been the recipients of large pm's from tournament organizers.
  • One, from an ongoing tournament's organizer, who accidentally sent "To" all entrants, instead of "BCC"
  • One purposeful, from a pending tournament's organizer, advertising a tournament

There are those who took issue with the existing organizer forgetting to BCC.

There are those who took issue with the pending's organizer sending to anyone and everyone he could find.

I take issue with neither of those situations.

I did have a problem, however, with receiving dozens of 'STOP SPAMMING MY INBOX' spams.

It's not funny. Not even from Moderators telling people to stop.

Here's what I began to send each INDIVIDUAL who was spamming to complain of the spam:

*ahem*

Please stop spamming MY inbox to tell others to stop spamming *your* inbox?

See how I responded only to you?

No, I got about 20 smart alec comments.

But at least I showed an example by sending to individuals rather than hitting "reply all" - so in addition to smart alec comments, I got some abashed apologies, too... and one "kudos" for sending to individuals rather than spam all the others who did NOT "reply all"

I receive them 3-4 times a week and when I posted about it in the GD I was told by a mod to set my mail options or whatever (keep in mind it was a Jr Mint Mod Squad Member, so hardly a mod. Much more a sanctioned spammer/repeat rule violator). Hardly a solution to the ongoing games/tournament spam. I am of the sound belief that if I did such a thing, I would be put on a lengthy vacation. So why are selective members allowed to repeatedly do this? Throw in the CC Facebook page joining in on a specific tournaments SPAM and we are at critical mass. Something should be done about this...-the black jesus

Spamming people to tell them to stop spamming is, at the very least, highly ironic.

That is what is contributing to the problem. Half the ones I received were telling people to stop.

There's some logic. "They did it, so it must be ok for me to do it". That's how Hitler rose to power...

There are certain things that only mods can do, 40kguy. You cannot threaten to ban people - you have no power. You have no real power. If you wanted to help, you should have responded to the last sender ONLY. You didn't. You knew what you were doing was annoying to everyone else, making it intentionally annoying.

Just admit you were wrong. For my part, I'm hoping for warnings at a minimum, and preferably a ban to everyone who sent more than one of the blasted things.

i just want an end to the practice. it is becoming over-bearing and is encroaching upon my CC experience. if they want to do that for tournaments that people have JOINED, that is fine. but to solicit me for tournaments, games, maps, etc, is an abuse of the PM system. CC should put an end to this, because it is at critical mass...-the black jesus

FB/Twitter has been used to promote HA's 200th tournament, the CC 5th anniversary battle royales, and some other tournaments that players have asked me to promote.

The BR's required repeat posts so that the organizers could release game numbers and passwords to the community.

I personally decided to champion and support HA's tournament. I think what he does for this site is wonderful and that this landmark tourney deserves extra attention.

I appreciate your feedback. I hope to keep a balance on FB/Twitter and am always looking for interesting things to post.

Personally, I didn't find them to be a big issue. I read the first one (from ChapCrap regarding the new tournament), realized all of the rest would be spam, and didn't bother opening them.

Keep in mind that this is the internet, you're not required to read anything here, and can walk away whenever you want.
