Which was the Best CLASSIC?

Postby Robinette on Tue Jan 05, 2010 2:02 am

So if you were to play a 42 territory map that bears no resemblance whatsoever to the copyrighted RISK game that is of no concern to anybody here, which map would it be?

In other words... if all 4 were up, which would you choose to play?

I never saw the original, art was sort of confusing (borders would come really close and almost touch but not quite) and the revamp is just not great looking to the eye (no offense sully).

And to say I don't like the classic map outline would be a lie, considering 83% of all of the games I've played are on it.

I gotta say I like the new revamp even better than the old classic map!

I really like the new one, though at the moment I still find the asian territories a little confusing..so many lines!! But give me a week and it'll become instinctive. I prefer the overall graphics of Sully's effort; the world itself certainly looks a lot better than the original..very sharp and clear and lack of territory lines reduces visual clutter.

So overall I prefer the new classic: I consider it to be the superior map.

I don't think I ever had a chance to play on the OG map so I'd have to say that the 2010 is the best. Because it actually looks like a "risk" type world .

Agreed on both. I'm not a fan of maps that use lines between dots, instead of actual, bordering territories. I guess I just like different places, to look like different places.

I think it's not great but it's fine. It's better than shapes by miles and it's better than the original.

I don't get the oppsition to it as it apparently looks like a rail map  ...

I think as a work-around for the copyright it's great.

Those lines on the 2010 version is quite annoying....
I gotta go with Classic 2006.
In order...
1. Classic 2006
2. Classic Shapes
3. Classic 2010
4. Classic Art

2010 is beautiful, and far superior because it's not the original, but rather an interpretation.

I think for those around for the original Classic, a large portion will select it as the best. For those than joined after, a large portion will be attached to the maps they knew, the Shapes and Art. And new players joining from here on out will only know the Classic REVAMP, and they'll come to love it.

But I definitely liked the graphic style of the original!

The original was great. It looked great. But, and this is a huge but, it's existence was a sword of Damocles looming. The new one is better because it's fully ours (or rather, sully's, who's letting us use it without worrying about that sword) while still looking like a world to conquer.

The original is my favorite, but the new one looks nice though. It's wierd, like learning a new language. When you are young, you learn your native language. So your inner voice (the thoughts in your head) are in that language. When you learn a 2nd language, you tend to convert the foreign language you hear into your native one, process it, then translate back as you speak. That's what i have to do when i'm playing the revamp. Like Manila, over by Oz. I have to keep telling myself it's Mongolia.

Time does have a way of helping that. Even so, I think the original can't be topped. The graphics, yes, but the layout was ideal.

I disagree. I usually think in my native language, but for example when writing posts in english or speaking english, I also think in english.

I was an Art fan, but the original version 1 or 2 was better by far. This new one is so meh to me. Sorry sully, I am just not a fan of the lines / dots. I like territories.

Someone should make the Vlassic Classic where the world is just one big pickle held by an ugly, talking stork with a Groucho Marx accent. That would be the best.

We have some sayings in our family, phrases like "the glorious armies of kamchatka will never be defeated" which have been with us decades, and because of which the original classic resonates with me more deeply than any replacement could. But as I enter turn 15 of another tedious squabble over aus & south am, I feel strangely at home on the new map, hinting as it does at those infinite other maps and gameplay challenges which make cc so captivating.

I like art too, I thought it was a nice idea. New one looks pretty nice, but again, should have kept art for a while to ease our withdrawal symptoms.

Not really; Lines on rail maps are, themselves, in the bonus region color, with an additional color box on each segment to indicate which part of which rail you're on, so that visually, it's easier to tell bonuses and distinguish the different attack paths/directions versus an all-one-scheme underlay with a series of all-one-color lines with a teensy weensy letter color to tell you what region you're in with a given terr.
