St. Patty's Day

Postby natty dread on Sat Mar 17, 2012 5:17 am

http://www.cracked.com/blog/8-insulting ... ricks-day/

From an article called "8 insulting ways people act Irish on St. Patrick's day":

#7. Call It "St. Patty's Day"

Every time someone calls it "Patty's" they prove they can't get through 24 hours without thinking of hamburgers. Paddy is short for Padraig (even though the d is silent in some dialects). Pat is short for Patrick, which is an English name. You might be aware of a slight history between the two countries. It still sort of works, but it would be like calling Independence Day "Super Happy Funtime Discount Fireworking Celebration!" You get the idea, but you're still naming one nation's celebration based on the language practices of a different nation with a history of causing your compatriots to be blown up by small, badly made explosives.

So, the question is: is CC racist towards Irish people?

Discuss.

saint and day are irish words now?

In irish it is 'La le Padraig' but nobody gives a toss really

that article should be called "8 ways people act on St. Patrick's day" cos it covers just about everything.

"Irish" is not a race it is a nationality. So racism has no place in the discussion.

If you wish to discuss the negative cultural stereotypes thats another matter altogether. I am Irish and hate the holiday as it has become an excuse to get drunk and act stupid.

I think its these sort of petty or (peddy?) arguments that spoil all good times in life.

The irish should be proud to have a day in their name that takes one of the worlds leaders population through a drunken embarrassing night that they try to forget for the rest of their lives, each year. Even if it was called something ridiculous ,like St Iridiumlands day, erroneously- why take offense? Its in your honoooor

St Pattys day is a naff name (and it's short for Patricia in Ireland) but its users think that, like Paddy, it derives from St Patricks day, it's 'proper' name, a least in English. So saying St Patty is no more 'racist' than saying St Paddy or, indeed, St Patrick. Its just silly. Theres a lot more proper Irish people (ie were actually born in Ireland and have ever lived there) in England than in the US and I've never heard an Irish person refer to it as St Padraigs day. I'm sure there are Irish people who speak Gaelic who call it that but my point is that saying St Patrick is normal for the Irish here and in Ireland and is not perceived as at all racist. So saying Paddy isnt either as the name Paddy comes from the common shortening for Patrick. I've met quite a few Paddys and as far as I know they were all Patricks. There's a lot more Patricks in Ireland than Padraigs and so most people called Paddy are really Patricks, not Padraigs.

Small, badly made explosives? Clearly the writers knowledge of Ireland/UK is dodgy in several areas.

Unlike other holidays?

People who want to get drunk and act stupid....dont usually need much of an excuse.

In this case, their puke and clothes just happen to be the same color.

Ignorance is stupidity.

Ignorance is not having learned something.
Stupidity is not being able to learn something, typically basic.

The terms are completely subjective though.

You will always be ignorant to some and some ignorant to you.
You will always be stupid to some, and some stupid to you.

Its ignorant to not know that the phrase, "Ignorance is stupidity" is both ignorant, and stupid......and....ironic.

Maybe you're just too ignorant about the stupidity inherent in implying stupidity for something you're yourself ignorant about.
