BAD advice! A lot of new people go instantly to Classic, because they know it. The problem? There are a large number of folks here who specialize in Classic Risk and who play VERY, VERY well. If you are playing an almost "filled" game (all slots taken but one or 2) and you can see that everyone is fairly low ranked (sergeant or lower), then you are probably OK, BUT if you start a game, join one with a lot of slots, etc ... watch out!
I always suggest people either start with a less popular map that plays more or less the same as Risk (gain bonuses from "continents", no "funny" attacks -- no bombardments, etc.). Examples include Crossword, Doodle (this, too, has its own special following, but it is small enough to get the hang of quickly), and many of the maps named after real places. (click on the map in "game finder" or "start game" screen and then carefully read all the explanations).
The OTHER route that works for some people is to specifically try games with unusual features. Plan on losing at first, but learn ... and before long you will be one of the "specialists" in this map. Similarly, trying a new map is a decent idea ... no one else can have had much experience (BUT, be warned, people who have played a lot of different maps tend to be able to pick up the basics on any new one more readily).
At any rate, don't worry too much about losing when you first join. Plan to have fun, watch and learn. Visit the Strategy section of forum for general tips and tips on some maps, then build on that to form your own strategies.
Overall, there are 2 sorts of players ... those who like to play and know that losing is just part of it, but still have fun AND those who want rank, acheivement and get upset when they lose. You decide who you wish to be. You will find players who are good and bad in each group, though a lot of those at the very type are of the more competetive ilk (tend to play private games, team games with the same folks, etc.) Also, though it is not always true, those who play freestyle seem to often be more of the competetive ilk.
Overall, over 99% of players here are nice, decent folks. Like everything, there are a few outright jerks. If you happen to encounter them, finish the game, put the person on your ignore list (means they cannot join a game you set up) and move on... there are plenty of truly NICE people out there!
