War of Gods (working title)

Postby SlowSmith on Tue Apr 09, 2013 3:19 pm

Map name: gods (working title)
Map maker: SlowSmith
Number of territories: around 60, may change

I'm starting work on a map themed on the different religions known to man, in particular the various houses of deities. This is an interesting way to bring some knowledge of nonmainstream and/or extinct religious beliefs to people, as well as having the potential to be a very entertaining, challenging and interesting map. Anyone interested in joining me on this project is welcome to contact me - previous experience in mapmaking would be welcome. Any tips and suggestions regarding map makeup, deities and map options will be considered.

Current houses of gods under consideration:
Egyptian Pantheon
Greek Pantheon (Possibly formed by 3 generations)
Norse Pantheon (Possibly split between different houses)
Judeo-Christian
Aztec Pantheon
Hindu Pantheon

Please note that the deity selection and portrayal does not mean to place any religion, extant or extinct, under or above any other, or insult people's personal religious feelings.

While interesting, many religions have occupied the same geographical regions on earth (which is I assume your setting)

So you can either

1) have the fight be on an astral plain which the gods would battle for surpremacy

or what I think is cool but not sure if u can implement

2) have 1 or 2 general "powers" according to each religion where if you are/have chosen this religion you get these bonuses/powers if you occupy a certain territory. Not sure if u can make a territory do different things for different players or not (doubt it) but it would be cool to do so. Power territories/centres could be spots like Jerusalem, Constantinople/Byzantine, ect.

Thanks for the input, Luminous. The idea was to make the map consist of different deities comprising a number of pantheons, as well as including a few artifacts, astral realms etc. Holding a pantheon would confer a bonus, and perhaps holding certain gods and certain extra territories (like holding a god of war, such as Monthu, Ares, Thor, Michael, Mixcoatl, or Kali, along with an artifact like the spear of destiny or whatnot) would grant (autodeploy) bonuses as well.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman, is a great fictional read - but would also give you idea's for the lesser and smaller dieties if you were intrested in broadening out option for character base.

Well some ideas for a map design:
  • make starting positions for gods who stand around and attack a pool of common humans in the middle(trying to expand their influence among the populus)
  • in the middle mankind fights religious wars expanding its influence among men
  • there are neutrals among common men that can be conquered and that give autodeploys as the influence is strongest around these religious places(maybe you can call them temples or artifacts)
  • you can make a loopback then so mankind can revolt against the false gods and overthrow their reign.(bombard gods through demi-gods/saints for example)
  • as a mental picture you might imagine gods standing around a globe where the humans live on
