Postby WL_southerner on Thu Oct 11, 2007 1:44 pm

even lo i like the crossword map we got now its only really good for 4 players, so i came up with this idea it should be good for 6 players plus

ok with room problems on crossword 2.0 maybe it might need to be
put on hold till there are more pixels to the small map before we can move on with this one, but
in the mean time i have this back up crossword 1.1 with 78 lines
(countrys )
this is a small map (600x600)

and the large map (800x800)

I think the reason that most people don't play Crossword is that it's slightly confusing and EXTREMELY easy to mis-deploy. Your new map is interesting as it has more territories, but it is also 100% symmetrical. I personally am not opposed to that, but most people around here don't like it so much.

With the low #s for current Crossword games, you should probably re-title this "Crossword Map Revamp" and put a poll asking people:

I play Crossword as is.
I Would play more if it were updated like this.
No, I don't like Crossword Maps.
Do you care?

It could always be Crossword 2.0, that way people could play the original with less countries, and the new one with more....but I do like the idea of a new map :D

Don't now why people on here don't like being cooks, remember under siege: A former SEAL, now cook, is the only person who can stop a gang of terrorists when they sieze control of a US Navy battleship.

the crossword map has the least number of games. i think that's a pretty good indicator of how many people like it. do you really think we need another one?

if this is going to move forward you should do a bit of research into why people don't play the current crossword map so you avoid the same traps. This map could potentially have all of the problems of crossword PLUS all of the problems of symmetrical maps, which many users hate.

I think the biggest problem with the original crossword map is that it's too specialized - only crossword puzzlers are likely to try it at all.

I'm not a crossword puzzler, but I try every map at least once. I think I've misdeployed far more on the Battle of Actium map in a half dozen games than on 100 or more on other maps.

I'd like to hear more about what people don't like about symmetrical maps since I've never thought of it as a problem before.

it is a problem. just look at the symmetrical maps we have available at this point and you'll see they're far less played than other maps.

the main problem is that all the games are almost the same. no strangeness in strategies. no nothing same attacks each and everytime.

umm ok

Postby WL_southerner on Fri Oct 12, 2007 6:50 am

ok lets see
aerial attack put for the idea of a revamp poll and sam and cena agree with him, good idea i look into that later
penguin said make it a 2.0 map that could work to. maybe have apoll to see what is wanted a revamp or 2.0 map but i do like your idea best penguin it gives more choices
dim and oaktown you said crossword is played lest amount this is true but all down to the frame of the mind of people, the biggest problem with crossword was a few players played it and lost and did not like it then went into chat and moan about the map and that put alot of people off playing it the same thing happen to circusmaxus,
symmetrical maps can be the hardest maps to play they are not really for the faint hearted or poor players but on the whole its down to the frame of mind
to many people are saying they hate the map and never played it, but when you think of it all maps are the same wheather if they are symmetrical or not
abel very good input your right crosswords are more for the thinking person
i wonder how many people on here do crosswords in the news papers i know i use to but my spelling is rubbish,
every one misdeployed i know have on every map i played it happens you just got to hope it go's in your favour when you do
we need more people to put there input down so please spead the word

that's not what happened. if you really think crosswords received bad publicity in chat and that's why it wasn't played then you're wrong.
crossword is simply a bad map. it's not difficult it's actually just as simple as classic. terits that border and form continents.
the main problem is the theme. and the graphic presentation.

for example Age of Merchants is considered to be one of the hardest maps around because the gameplay is different than anything done before.

and yet if you look at the stats AoM has around 2200 games per month. while crosswords has 200 games per month. that's 11 times less games. and just look through the forums for threads like "top5 hardest maps" or "your least favorite map" and you'll see AoM is present in each of those threads. heck, AoM has even been banned in a tourney because people complained it's too hard.

i guess the thing is nobody wants to fight over a crossword puzzle. they'll rather fight over some countries.

also symmetrical maps aren't hard. not at all. but the problem is they are too predictable. there's no random flow of attacks no surprising routes no nothing

according to me the yellow bridges make a lot of sense. makes it possible for adjacent rows to hit each other whereas in the original, the rows and columns can only hit in 1 particular direction

PS-my jargon on crosswords is really bad since i've never played it.... but i hope u guys get wat i mean to say?

i have played the original crossword map and have enjoyed it. The only thing that bothered me about it was that it really is only good for 4 players to battle it out on. The new map looks great - i would definitely play a 6 player game on it or even doubles. I would suggest keeping the original crossword map and making this one a 2.0 version. i have never had a problem with deployment on the crossword map but then i've done a lot of crosswords in the paper, etc. which could be why i don't have a problem reading this style of map.
In the first map the countries are blocks of words all together. For the new map to increase difficulty I would suggest breaking up the countries. Like have part of the top right hand corner all "yellow" but the rest of yellow be in the bottom left hand corner of the map. If you wanted a whole country (and the bonus) you would have to protect it on two separate parts of the map. Just a thought...
Otherwise love the idea of a new crossword map.

I still think that where possible you want to try to avoid having two terrs: 1 Across and 1 Down. Even if you are paying attention, sometimes your mouse slips and you select 1 Down when you wanted 1 Across.

More people are getting used to checking for a prefix letter/number thanks to Battle of Actium. But, Actium is different in that most adjacent terrs are listed together on the drop down. Maybe switch to Across 01, Across 05, Across 11, and Down 01. That would probably alleviate much of the mis-deployment problem.

Notice that I made the terr #s two digit, that way Across 10 won't be between Across 1 and Across 2.

I too am in favor of Tasha's idea to split up the bonus areas. Most crossword puzzles have a theme. The theme is usually displayed in the three longest Across rows and one Down column in each of the (4) corners.
