Classic alternatives discussion/suggestions

Postby oaktown on Sat Oct 18, 2008 3:57 pm

Now that we have two "classic" maps in play, there has been a good deal of Foundry talk about creating more. To facilitate discussion and bring everything under one roof, MrBenn and I will be moving related discussion that strays into other areas of the Foundry into this thread.

Please note that this does not indicate that any additional "classic" maps have been approved, nor does it suggest a change in CC policy. Consider the two current "classic" maps as here to stay until you hear otherwise. The Foundry CAs are not advocating for additional classic maps, nor do we encourage you to begin working on any as we can not guarantee that they will be accepted for play. This is simply a place for discussion.

You shouldn't see this as a Classic revamp, they're simply creating new maps which happen to have the same gameplay. There's no reason at all why such maps couldn't go through the Foundry like any other new map.

OK, one way to look at this is that the circumstances opened up real possibilities for creativity. Multiply "classic" maps with the same game play could do several things.

1. Allow for real player test of various alternatives.

2. allow for variety for players who don't want to deal with differing underlying game play

3. expand the possible attractions to CC for new members

One really different idea from Dancing Mustard would allow players in the same game to see different overlays.

I just think this is an opportunity that CC should consider.

I'm glad to finally see some focused discussion on this topic. Here is my two cents worth (and I'm not really saying anything I haven't said before, just bringing it under one roof):

* I, and many others, joined this site to play a world map. I know I'm not the only one exploring other options - that is, other sites that continue to offer a 'classic' world map. This site needs a world map.

* There can be no legal issue over the broad concept of the gameplay that we enjoy on a world map. The devil is in the detail.

* If a world map is not developed soon, this site WILL suffer.

* A simple list of what criteria such a map needs to meet in order to be 'acceptable' needs to be published here. Then the talented people here that are ready and waiting can start to work.

* The idea of multiple options sounds good. The idea of being able to swap between multiple options in the same game is very intriguing.

* Six months is too long a window. This site needs something within a few weeks. Such is the speed of the internet, and such is range of alternative playing options available to us if this site continues to fail to meet our needs.

All of this is said with the most positive of intentions. I would prefer to stay here. I've made quite a few friends, and I enjoy the way the site is structured. But I'm basically here to play the game. Currently, I can't do that.

I just need someone to answer one question:
Can we use a global map of the world or not?
I and others are quite confused over this as many of us have heard that Hasbro has basically put ownership on the global Classic style map for ConquerClub gameplay.

Would someone please just tell me straight forward whether or not we can still use a global map for Classic gameplay?

With the New World Order gaining more and more influence in the world, why can't we use a global map that uses Unions instead of continents? EU, NAU, AFU, ASU, SPU, and maybe even a Middle Eastern Union. Change some attack points and/or country/territory names, and all should be good, right?

*not* a map of the world

Postby khazalid on Sun Oct 19, 2008 8:14 am

but titan, satun's second largest moon and widely believed to harbour low-level lifeforms and a viable atmosphere. ice and ocean rather than land and sea - just invert the territories from that other planet we all know and love, and give them new names!

surely that ticks all the boxes? you just have south titania and indotania at the top of the map...
had i been wise, i would have seen that her simplicity cost her a fortune

Well, they can't possibly have copyrighted the names of the continents/territories (if so, they can sue the whole damn world, since most of us live there), so, as a very basic start, here you go:

Now go and make a much better version.

wrong -- the copyright could be restrictive enough to bar a world map for the came -- that would be a matter for the court to decide if a settlement is not available

Besides, right now, we don't even know whether it is Hasbro that is threatening the litigation.

I suggest we accept the constraint that a world map is out for the time being and concentrate on several alternative overlays and see how the game play goes.

Can you just misspell the names of the countries slightly and change the shape of the world a little bit? Watch out Madagazcar, South Afrika is attacking errr assulting you.

I doubt that would be a sufficient change to satisfy copyright restrictions if they prohibit the world map layout such as that in risk.

Why not get creative and go well beyond a world map. Take the shapes and art alternatives and creat 8 or nine more on themes like political parties, gender differences, isms, etc.?

why not just swap country names about?

like all of australian countries swap with SA countries; peru becomes eastern australia, and that sort of thing :D

Or we could really screw up the names of the countries like this map:

this thread is a little silly without know what can or cannot be done. That being said, I don't tihnk anything that looks like a world of any kind would be allowable.

Yes, I agree with you. It might be more productive to look at many other alternatives.

I thoroughly agree with you, though the combination of a specifically configured world map and the risk-like gameplay may well be the issue. Nevertheless, I love that simple, clean map you created! Well done! If I could, I'd be using it now!

Another possibility, continents by treaties this time:

I have taken some liberties with the borders, (put Greece in Russia), and if a country is part of one or more, I picked whichever was best for gameplay. Also, I made up the 'Northern Islands, and gave some of them new autonomy.

If Kaplowitz gave his permission would anyone be interested in working on and imprving this map? To me it has the same feel as the original Classic but with more territories. I really don't think there would by any copyright issues here.

unfortunately the additional locations were used by hasbro as optional extras on the computer game Risk II
