Had the inset been greatly scaled back and altered to accomodate secondary elements then yes I would see an issue. But other than some minimal cropping in one corner it didn't effect any of the primary elements much at all and allowed better placement of the secondary elements.

The point is, clipping the inset looks ugly. It makes the map look shoddy, like the mapmaker just ran out of space and squeezed that inset in at the last minute. The insets, main map, title & legend should be the elements with higher priority. When the only reason to make one of the insets look bad is to give more room for other, less important elements, then priorities are not being followed.

But I'm done arguing about this, I've made my opinion clear. TBK will either take my advice or not, it's up to him.

You mean you don't want to keep arguing in circles over this? :)

Really I just want California (and others) to hit Beta so we get some new maps to play.

Some interesting points from both of you guys, but I think I'm going to proceed with the current version. I think it is the most efficient use of the space, and I like the rhythm it generates by paralleling the diagonal shape of California itself.

Honestly, I'm with natty on this one, but I respect your decision as mapmaker, TBK. I'll get the XML a-cookin' soon.

Thanks, Cadet! I look forward to seeing it.

Which reminds me, are we going to have to re-submit the XML or simply update the old post?

My girlfriend was talking to me about living in California and naming off places... my only resource for knowing where any of these places are was the mental image of this map. You've made a lasting impression :)

Let's hope we can play it soon!

I actually like the clipped inset... it would be nice if the diagonal line ran parallel to California's coast, but no biggie really.

i was thinking the same thing myself

the angled inset makes me think of a coastline & it runs along the coastline, just not quite parallel to it. a shame really.

is there a reason the borders inside the insets don't match the main map ?

I would bet that the borders in the insets were adjusted to fit the text after magnification. It would be nice to see that process reversed, by taking the inset, stripping the text and shrinking it back down to fit the main map.

Yes like this:

Then done it is. The insets match the main map and the main map matches the inset.

Look, I'm sorry if I misinterpreted your post but I was merely responding to the attitude you were feeding me. You could have expressed your concerns without using the word cluster-f*** and the eye roll.

Permiting that people don't build armies as large as 1000+ everything fits in the insets. I'm assuming that by army circles you mean the digits used to represent armies? If you mean the actual circles that some maps use under the armies, then I would tell you that you wont be seeing those on this map.

i've been looking long and hard to spot problems with this map and all i could find was a single itsy bitsy thing. the stars have a yellow stroke that looks good on all terits except mojave desert and central valley where it's invisible. this makes the stars look inconsistent all over the map.
you could change the colour of the stroke, or add a shadow to make the stroke contrasting, or even remove it completely.

other than that i really like the look and feel of the map. nicely done.

I see what you're talking about and agree.

The only other thing I noticed is the strange pixel on top of the 'S' in "Chino Hills" on the large map. When I quickly glance at it I almost think it's a dollar sign ($) rather than a regular 'S'.

See what you've done to me DiM!
