hey, let's talk about uganda (again)

Postby SultanOfSurreal on Sat Feb 06, 2010 4:53 pm

so it's been a little while since the last discussion of uganda's pending legislation to kill all the gay people. to summarize that thread: most of us were able to agree it was incredibly shitty (impressive!), but some of us were unwilling to admit the culpability of american groups who funded and fueled the ugandan anti-gay movement ;_;

since that thread, most of the groups have sort of reluctantly backpedaled, saying that the bill was a bridge too far, etc. standard non-apology bullshit. but finally, a brave amerian patriot is stepping forward to defend some good old-fashioned genocide: http://www.christiannewswire.com/news/3241012954.html

"Uganda's people and government deserve support, not criticism, from the United States," said Kincaid. "They are up against the international homosexual lobby, the money of George Soros, and the Obama Administration. They are trying to create a Christian culture that is protective of families and children."

at the national prayer breakfast recently, both obama and hillary clinton spoke out against the bill. this was pretty monumental, since a group called "the family" sponsors this breakfast, and they have close ties with the politicians in uganda who are behind the bill in question.

what's more, a gay ugandan spoke as well -- with his face covered, out of feat of getting killed if he didn't: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMKY2DB1Dk0

his story is pretty harrowing -- he's been raped by the police in uganda, and couldn't report it because health officials might give his name to local newspapers. apparently ugandan papers have been running stories headlined "HOMO TERROR" and "TOP HOMOS" and such, with lists of known homosexuals. these individuals have been fired from their jobs, beaten, and worse, because of it. you should watch the video, it's really something.

Jesus Christ man.

Do you have any idea how many countries ALREADY execute homosexuals?

Why don't we talk about Singapore.... or Iran?

Correction, you only go to jail in Singapore, but Iran is famous for executing gays.. as are a number of countries with predominantly Muslim populations.

so you don't think it's worth paying attention to another nation poised to join the dubious ranks of those who execute gay people? or are you trying to say something else? what's your point here?

(wait, let me field this one for you -- you have none)

oh i see, it's only wrong to kill gay people when muslims are doing it

My point is that you're just pissing and moaning and that you would probably be opposed to measures which could right this.

Also, the fact that you're calling attention to what may happen in Uganda when it is already happening elsewhere in the world seems silly to me when you make no reference to the fact that it is already happening elsewhere.

Why don't you make a third thread with the same title about the same issue. Maybe that will save Uganda's homosexual population.

After that maybe you can work on the places where this is ACTUALLY HAPPENING.

Yeah, let's totally ignore all bad stuff and it will go away.

After that maybe you can work on the places where this is ACTUALLY HAPPENING.

Like Uganda?

Furthermore, because this is a too good opportunity to waste.

It would seem that even on that point we still aren't entirely in agreement.

I have an issue with the fact that Sultan is singling out on a place where something may happen, while it's already happening in other places in the world. In his original thread he made a big stink about how white Christians were to blame for what may eventually happen, even though they've said they're against this.

It's interesting that he doesn't seem interested in the places where this is ALREADY happening if there are no white Christians to blame...

See, it happens in other places, so it MUST be alright for a bunch of religious nuts from the US to go promote the spread of violent bigotry in other nations.

Damn Muslims.

If you actually think that's what I'm saying you're retarded.

If you realize that's not what I'm saying and you're trying to twist things around anyhow you're a tool.

Yes, Sultan does seem to single out white Christians for his lecturing; rather than, say, people of darker complexions. For example, his thread regarding the lack of bookstores in a, what he originally thought was a majority white Christian Texas town. Turns out the town is 97% Mexican-American; once that was brought to his attention, he stopped posting in that particular thread.

Presumably he does this out of some sort of hatred for white Christians and/or some idea that white Christians aren't criticized enough as compared to others? I don't know. In any event, I've commented on this particular issue in Uganda in the other thread; I'm not sure comments in a second thread are worthwhile.

Oh, another example. See, now that it white Christians are doing it, it's okay for us to criticize it! I think this is what you meant to type Timminz.

I'm fairly certain that there are not many people on this forum who would defend the barbaric laws of those muslim countries that Gabon is such a fan of, yet there seem to be a number of you saying there's no reason for outrage over some americans going to africa to preach bigotry and hatred, thus fanning the flames for barbaric laws to be brought in where they don't currently exist.

The particular religion is not the issue here. It's the fact that so many religious groups preach such hatred towards people who are different from them, and that so many people seem to be okay with it.

Preaching intolerance and hatred hurts everyone, regardless of whether religion or other justifications are used as excuses.

However, the problem is that intolerent people don't think they are being intolerant, any more than we feel we are being "intolerant" to object to child rape, murder for anything but self-defense, etc. People of Uganda and too many Right-wingers, in general, see homosexuality as a true and serious threat.

This is a key reason why PUBLIC education and public education standards in private schools are necessary for a democracy to function. As the old song goes "they have to be carefully taught" to hate. Its up to society to strike the balance between allowing parents to teach beliefs and ensuring that kids know real facts ... regardless of beliefs. (and are able to distinguish between them).

The reason the Christian Right really does deserve notice on this, in the US, is because the Christian Right has an active campaign to "miseducate" children on several fronts, including homosexuality views. They use home-schooling rules and such to ensure that their kids never hear anything but the narrow doctrines their parents feel is appropriate. Even when the parents are not specifically "anti" homosexual, etc., the parents are encouraged to teach techniques that ensure the kids do not use true critical thinking skills the way most of us do and are fully willing to accept that anything (and I mean ANYTHING) the church teaches is to be fully superior to anything anyone else says or teaches. This is not what I or most people feel Christ taught, but those kids never hear that. They never even hear that Christians, not just those attacking Christianity, think differently.

Oh knock it off. The issue here is that Sultan has decided to pick out Christian freaks to lambast rather than any other group because he has a hard on for marginalizing white Christians.

f*ck you, you ridiculous pretend lawyer

i am posting about uganda because there is currently a human rights crisis happening there that may very well end in genocide, and it's being suborned by my own countrymen. the execution of gays in iran, sudan, and elsewhere is a terrible human rights crisis too, but that's no reason not to pay attention to -- and try to prevent -- this twisted inversion of justice from spreading. i don't give two shits if it's a muslim or chrisitan initiative -- i look at all religions with fairly equal disgust, and shit like this is the reason why.

now i expect gabon to dodge the issue and say everything possible to avoid condemning the mass-murder of gay people. his idiocy and barely-concealed bigotry are par for the course. but you're being dumber than usual here. so in conclusion, shut the f*ck up and go back to pretending you're matlock
