Don't know, but since elementary school I've dreamed of the day this is actually common in our lives, pretty much like the TV with aromas.

I'm panning on buying one of these printers. There are few already, and in that site where you can pledge money for projects you can get one by pledging some money, a very good one apparently. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/tps ... ge-pyramid

Why resort to crime if you can get one? Why not go down to the scrap yard and getting some spare material, and then become a legitimate craftsman with everything you could ever want? It sounds easier than robbing/fleeing/gunfighting/recovering/court/prison.

Cool Technology. Does go well beyond a basic CNC machine.. and a lot cheaper. Still, I have a feeling its not quite as simple as the article makes it seem.. particularly when referring to guns (or any major metal object), a lot of the issue is the mix of metals/metal powders used, the temperature at which the parts are baked, etc.

Still... with innovation. Forget the guns.. I want my own car manufacturer!

Okay, next step, build them to use Martian soil as the raw material. Ship a solar powered self replicating 3d printer to Mars, with an extra controller to expand the repertoire as time goes on and we can have a base on Mars before we send astronauts.

I remember reading a series of older science articles that hoped someday we've have the technology for this sort of thing. It would be pretty cool.

when it comes to the blueprint for a gun i'd imagine governments could cyber-snoop and prevent the vast majority of these blueprints being used by inappropriate people.

this tech is pretty cool though. there are mechanics out in the deserts who now print themselves spare car parts and don't have to wait weeks for stupid delivery trucks. maybe you can now print a fleshlight in the comfort of your home.

I'm sure these things will find their way onto sites like the thepiratebay which have withstood (mostly American) attempts to take them down. They are files no different from mp3s, let's not treat them as anything other than that.

Maybe my country doesn't censor half of the internet. Like, you know, most of the civilized countries in the world. (Yet.)

Anyway, there's such things as encryption and secure networks. If I really want to download a file without the government knowing about it there are ways I can do that.

Cheapo models work with plastic. The professional ones can use metals.

Also, I remember reading about 3d-printers that can use living human cells as material. When they perfect the technology they can just print new organs for people who need them...

ha ha again. you think your government just sit in their chairs and allow bomb recipes and pirate media to flower? they censor things that are harmful to security and they arrest people who make illegal films online. terrorist websites, megavideo etc... all blocked.

say you download an ak47 blueprint from the internet. how do you know the blueprint code doesn't contain a government tracking bug?
say you upload an ak47 blueprint to a website. what's to stop your government instantly forcing into the website, deleting it and then tracing the uploader (you)?

you might think you're smart, but there is no way you can compete with the hackers who work for governments.
