If I kissed my close male friends on the cheek I would have no close male friends... that's gay!!!!! :D

Seriously, you can't do that shit in the UK :)

UK? Betiko is French or something continental anyway....

yup i actually explained to you also the origin of this american myth. WW2, americans liberating france, and surprise! during the war, women didn't have time nor ressources for shaving themselves so things got a little bushy, I guess they didn't shower much either. So te GIs came back with a few untrue conclusions about french women because of their self negligeance during the teutonic ocupation.

Interesting fact: in 1989, only 7 million americans owned a passport. 48 millions in 2000 and 110 millions in 2012. I guess the younger generations are a bit more curious, so you could go find out for yourself instead of listening to the stupid nonsense you heard from your dad that he's heard from his dad.

call it gay as much as you want, i don't care. just don't think that 2 guys kissing on the cheeks to say hi are gay in france. they can be brothers, or cousins or long time friends.
It does bring to awkward situations though where people would all say hello to each other and there is this girl's boyfriend you don't know that well that gives you two kisses and you are like... ok i won t be rude but i don't fucking know you well enough asshole!

Yeah, most Americans are very awkward about any possibility of being perceived as gay. Even hugs between guy friends needs to be macho'd up.

Then again, I've seen this study which concluded that French men are the most feminine of the developed nations.

Here in Detroit, going to Canada used to be very simple. My family used to go to Ontario a few times a year, whether it was just going to Windsor, or visiting a Provincial Park such as Point Pelee near Leamington, or The Pinery near Grand Bend. Since 9/11, a passport is now required to visit Canada. Naturally, many more Detroiters now own passports. Doesn't mean they're going anywhere exotic; just that they wanted some poutine from Windsor.

Bollocks.

well you wouldn't hug the same way a male or a female, no matter how close. but french people don't really hug. we are way less tactile than spanish people for example. your spanish friends would tend to hug you a lot in a very genuine manner. americans do hug to say hi but just like you say, bbs in a "hey i love you bro but this isn't gay right!" kind a way. Or maybe that's just teens young adults still a bit immature.. camaraderie is ok, it doesn't need justification and it doesn't imply any kind of sexual business!

I stayed at The Pinery in Grand Bend once. Also, last week I ate a Maryland version of poutine at a pub. It was the only food I ate in Baltimore that didn't have crab meat in it. They sure do love their crabs.

In Sweden it's traditional to greet your friends with a handjob.

It's not sexual or anything, it's just how they say hi.

not true. i heard that in a swedish party a guy passed out and when he woke up a girl was performing a handjob on him. he went to report it to the police, and god, that girl is in trouble! (true story, but it was more blowin that handin)

in other notes: would you kiss your mum and dad? if so you are super gross, as for you a kiss is sexual.

So if you go t france and you have to salute a woman that is not just randomly met (hold your horses! the less ambiguous woman possible. let's just say your host wherever you are staying and that she is genuinely friendly) and she comes towards you, says "bonjour" and kisses you on both cheeks would you think something sexual has just happened? :?

but seriously... you never kiss your mother/grandmas/sisters? that is the wierdest think I ever heard! hope you were kidding.

Yeah don't worry, I'm really not taking anything too seriously since I've come back

Seriously, I will kiss my mother and sisters on the cheek. I will give a really good female friend a kiss on the cheek (or both) too. The only person I ever kiss on the lips is my girlfriend. And I don't kiss myself (like on the arms) because I'm not really that much of a self-conceited jack ass. I live in Scotland, and in our culture, guys don't kiss guys unless you're gay. There are exceptions to that, the most common being to do with football. I've played for a team and it's quite common for guys to jump on top of and kiss the guy that scored on the forehead or cheek in the heat of the moment. That sort of thing. That's just how it is over here.

Quick edit - just to pick up on "So if you go t france and you have to salute a woman that is not just randomly met (hold your horses! the less ambiguous woman possible. let's just say your host wherever you are staying and that she is genuinely friendly) and she comes towards you, says "bonjour" and kisses you on both cheeks would you think something sexual has just happened?" ehhhh no, that is absurb hahahahahahahaha!

A) kiss mum and dad
B) kiss mum, hug dad
C) hug mum, hug dad
D) hug mum, shake hands with dad
E) shake hands with mum and dad
F) shake hands with mum, say hi to dad waving the hand
G) say hi to mum and dad waving your hand
H) you don t salute your parents even after 6 month without seeing them

Yeah previous message sent before seeing this one. Here we kiss on the lips only our partner. I think i ve seen some american parents kiss on the lips their toddlers, that is very awkward for french.
But it s true that it remains strange if you have a bunch of people meeting a kissing frenzy starts, so you kiss the girls granting with hellos, then either shake hands or kiss the guys. If the guy has taken the initiative to present his hand or his cheek well you go with that. But to tell the truth when you meet a good friend one on one in the street you will most often give a homie handshake. The kissing comes most often with the multiple hellos in society, or welcoming on one s doorstep.
