Yeah but USC lost a lot of starters on defense to the draft. Now is the best time for the Bears and Oregon State and maybe Oregon to step up and take the title. I smell roses for my bears

Hey, I'm all for anybody beating USC, Florida, or Ohio State. In fact, if Ohio was nuked I would laugh and throw a party.

The NCAA doesn't need a playoff system, it needs atheletic directors with balls
big enough to actually schedule 10 tough opponents each season.

Looking at the USA Today Pre-season Top 10
and Games outside their Conferences:
  • 1. Florida - Charleston Southern, Troy and Florida International (only 4 away games)
  • 2. Texas - Louisiana Monroe, at Wyoming, UT-El Paso and U.Central Florida (6 away games)
  • 3. Oklahoma - BYU, Idaho State, Tulsa and Miami(FL) (6 away games)
  • 4. Southern Cal - San Jose State, at Ohio State and at Notre Dame (6 away games)
  • 5. Alabama - at Virgina Tech, Florida International, North Texas and Chattanooga (5 away games)
  • 6. Ohio State - Navy, USC, at Toledo and New Mexico State (5 away games)
  • 7. Virgina Tech - Alabama, Marshall, Nebraska and at East Carolina (5 away games)
  • 8. Penn State - Akron, Syracuse, Temple and Eastern Illinois (only 4 away games)
  • 9. LSU - at Washington, UL-Lafayette, Tulane and LA Tech (5 away games)
  • 10. Mississippi -at Memphis, SE Louisiana, UA-Birmingham and Northern Arizona (5 away games)
  • UR - Michigan - Western Michigan, Notre Dame, Eastern Michigan and Delaware State (only 4 away games)

That would certainly be nice, but it's a pipe dream. Why man up when you can get just as far playing against local high schools?

Why should Florida schedule an away game at Ohio State, where they'll likely see their championship dreams smashed, when they can schedule a home game against Charleston Southern? It's an inherent flaw in the system.

I can understand an SEC fan saying this, but a Big 10 fan calling the Pac10 week? My goodness. You have got to be kidding me.

Well, if they choose to do it... it would be a home and home deal like OSU has done
with both the University of Texas and University of Southern California.

Any team that misses out on the Big Dance because of the strength of their schedule
can finally quit belly-achin' and put the blame where it belongs.

The fact is, Florida would NEVER play a game in November or December up north. Never happen. Same goes for FSU, Georgia, LSU, 'Bama, Miami, or any other SEC team that's even half-way decent.

Nah... it would happen prior to the dog sled days of Winter. But if you've lived in Detroit you're aware that late August thru Thanksgiving there's a good chance for perfect football weather.

Sure there is. But, if there were a playoff system, some years in December, an SEC team would have to travel to a Big Ten campus. And the Big Ten team would have a huge advantage. Look how Green Bay (typically) does at home in the playoffs, especially against teams like Dallas.

I don't expect to ever see a Major College Football Playoff system in place because it would erase the mythical National Championship. But I would like to see some of these "powerhouse" schools meet occassionally during the regular season and settle some Conference bragging rights on the field. Which would quiet down more than just a few ranting football blogging loonies.

It wouldn't be that hard to have the top 4 teams play a 2 round playoff for the national championship. You can still play them at the bowl sites and rotate who gets the national championship game, thus keeping the bowl people happy. The argument usually comes from the fact that many of the #3 teams in the nation had an argument that they should have been #2. This eliminates that problem. Sure, teams that are #5 might bitch that they aren't 4, but at least there wouldn't be undefeated teams getting snubbed from a shot at the national championship (whether they are in the WAC or not).

If there had been a 4 team playoff last year
would Utah have gotten the shaft?

I'm 99% sure that if any team went undefeated with a 4 team playoff system they would make the top 4. Previously it hasn't mattered unless they made top 2. You could be undefeated and ranked 10, it wouldn't matter. Best Utah could hope for was a BCS bowl bid.

Florida squeeked by Alabama and undefeated Utah spanked 'em,
but a one loss strength of schedule prevailed over the unbeaten
and Utah finishes at #2.

Exactly. And the controversy with the #3 team in the nation happens almost every year. It's obvious now that Utah should have had a shot at the national championship. They can fix that with a 4 team playoff.

Utah beat some tough teams and were obviously good themselves,
but the current method keeps it interesting and fans of the game
will continue to discuss it forever.

Seven months later and I'm still stunned at how they rolled over 'Bama.
Anyone remember the Crimson Tide going to Athens to play the Bulldogs?
