Madam Walker comes to mind- first woman to become a self made millionaire, not that her story gets told much nowadays. Note that "first woman" bit. Not the first "Black" woman.

Rosa Parks would be my other choice. I can't think of anyone else coming from humble origins who changed the face of US politics more than her.

UK wise, Mary Seacole needs a mention. Humanitarian, brilliant nurse, and an unrecognized hero until recent years.

Racist americans in action again.... Lets have a history month, then racially segregate it Go to the top of the class america! "Black History Month" why not american history month? Civil rights history month? A few points.
- Its said that "those that don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it"
- May I suggest that "those that won't let go of the past, and continue to demand special priviledges are doomed to having a not very bright future." How can you move on as a nation if each minority demands to have special time devoted to them. Why not concentrate on what unites you as americans, not the differences between you as people.

Whats next? Wierd al yankavich has an excellent suggestion - talk shows about transexual, nazi, eskimos..... Now hows that as an idea for a month. Transexual, Nazi, Eskimos History Month, celebrate and feel empathy for a truly neglected and opprossed minority!

Oh, I love it. It's cute to pretend that we've always had a view of history that was all inclusive, but it doesn't really stand up to much scrutiny. It's one of the fun things about current right wing political thought is to argue that pointing out a racial bias is racist itself. Recognising people of colour for their contributions towards a nation's history is not racist against white people. It's a recognition of the fact that they were usually left out, and still are.

Ah- a really good question. It'd be nice to know where you're coming from with those questions, but the short answer is that minorities have been left out of the traditional narrative.

By whom? I don't think it's fair to say that anyone made a conscious decision, but then nobody has a ruling role over history. I'm not sure what you'd like me to say really- you didn't really offer much apart from some very sharp questions.

So I guess I'd like to ask you a couple of questions- do you feel that, historically, the role of black women has been treated fairly? If you think the treatment has been fair, who do you admire? If not, who do you think received poor treatment from historians?

I avoided this thread as long as I could.

This "debate" should be bifurcated. The first section should include a discussion of [insert group]'s recognition from a historical perspection. The second section should include a discussion of [insert group]'s current status. Here's why it needs to be bifurcated - I don't believe I owe someone something in 2010 because of how their ancestors were treated. Nearly every race, ethnicity, and religious group has a history of repression associated with it. For example, my own ancestors have been subjugated by the Ottoman Empire and the German Nazis. However, I will not demand special status today in Turkey or in Germany because of what those peoples' ancestors did to my ancestors.

So, I'll start the discussion of each section:

(1) History

I was a history major in college. I learned of various groups' contributions to society. This is not something I learned in high school. However, I tend to think that history classes focus on leaders, politicians, and generals, most of whom tended to be the same color as the majority of the people in their respective country.

I have no issue celebrating Black History month. It is good for people to remember what our ancestors did to those who were not like them, if only to provide some small lesson on how we act now.

(2) Current

People should be treated based on what they bring to society, not on the color of their skin, their religion, or their sexual preference.

Yeah but they keep separating THEMSELVES into ethnic groups instead of mixing and creating one group. Its impossible that we don't find friction in that situation.
