Recommend something thread

Postby Symmetry on Sun Apr 18, 2010 10:20 pm

Rules (edited):

1) Recommend

2) Ask for recommendations (on anything)

As a starter, I'm looking for recommendations on a good US beer. My sister is getting married in the US and I need something decent for the stag night.

Edited: I'm also looking for a decent barbecue recipe for lamb.

And a good recent kung fu movie. Ong Bak was great.

A generic recommendation, anywhere in the US - Budweiser American Ale. NOt the normal Bud, not LIght, nor any other incarnation. But the American Ale is nice.

Almost as generally available: Sam Adams, any version except the insipid "light". They also have a variety of seasonal ales, depending on when you'll be here.

Most areas have a decent local beer - in NY, Brooklyn Lager is produced by the guy who used to make the Bruce's Brewery stuff in the UK. IN NJ a fairly new brewery, Cricket Hill, makes at least three decent beers.

Where will you be? Anywhere near me, and I'll happily buy you a pint.

Can someone recommend me a good hotel in Gananoque?

There's a fine US microbrew called Natty Light. It's widely celebrated among all American beer connossieurs. Your sister would make quite the splash at her wedding if she served it.

Aside from that, though, there are none. US beer is almost worse than that of the UK. But the difference is bare. Like the difference between drinking either urine or puss from a sucking chest wound. Even the celebrated microbrews are barely palatable, mostly.

Natural Light is NOT good beer. Neither is Ice House. And I'm sorry you feel the way you do about microbrews. Many micro-breweries create fantastic beer that rival the best in the world.

I recommend Yuengling as an American beer. It's not water like most American lagers, has a decent flavor, but it's not heavy and doesn't fill you up like my beloved Newcastle will after 4 or so.. Plus it's inexpensive because it's domestic. For a guys' night out, it will work well.

Regarding the barbecue lamb, I have had great success with this recipe for rack of lamb:

Ingredients:-

* 4 racks of lamb with 3 or 4 cutlets
* 1 onion finely chopped
* 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
* 3 tablespoons olive oil
* 1 tablespoon lemon juice
* 2 teaspoons honey
* salt and freshly ground black pepper
* 1 lemon

Method:-

Prepare the marinade by mixing the onion, vinegar, oil, lemon juice and honey into a shallow bowl and drop in the racks of lamb. The honey in the marinade will add a little thickness to the consistency and make it easier to brush on - I like to marinade overnight and use a brush occasionally to make sure all the meat is getting the benefit.

Season the racks of lamb well with the salt and pepper and grill for 15-20 minutes turning occasionally. Feel free to add more marinade as baste though the cooking process.

I do not like kung fu, so I have no recommendations there.

I do not know of any hotels in Gananoque. I don't even know where that is.

I call my middle toe "Toe". Actually that's what I call all of them.

Can someone recommend a good scotch, bourbon, or Canadian whiskey? I enjoy Balvenie, Maker's Mark, and Crown Royal. Always looking for something different.

Also looking for a recommendation on good cigars.

No, I've been to many wonderful beer tastings in the finest, most elite brew houses in North America. Natty Light is always on tap and being feted by the creme de la creme of society. Symmetry will meet with only accolades and toasts for his sense of refinement and cheer if he serves Natty Light: a special beer for those special occasions in life.

Thanks, gang!

For a fruit recommendation, I HIGHLY recommend Asian pears. Damn yummy.

I recommend that you use lower case letters once in a while so you don't appear really angry all the time.

1) Beer:

The answer depends on where in the US you are going... as there are some good local brews. In Boston I like Harpoon Breweries IPA.

Nationally an Samuel Adams beer will be good. The new Sam Adams Nobel Pils is really good.

Of course your tastes/preferences matter as well.

... and of course you can find good imports. In a good irish Pub in Boston you can get a Guiness... or you can go to an English Pub and get a Newcastle.

2) Lamb:

Marinade for 4-6 hours with Soy Sauce and Crushed (Fresh) garlic.

Cook.

3) Kung Fu Movie:

No help.
