Obama College Videos: Critical Race Theory

Postby Phatscotty on Thu Mar 08, 2012 5:29 pm

with a full serving of the most blatant media bias I have seen in a while...

http://www.breitbart.com/Breitbart-TV/2 ... ll%20Video CNN's ridiculous "journalism"

Why is Derrick Bell creating such a stir? Not only because he intentionally, in his own words, HID this video during the 2008 election, but also because he was the Jeremiah Wright of Academia, and he has said things like this in the past: "treason to whiteness is loyalty to humanity." and "Abolishing the white race as a social category".

Critical Race Theory (CRT) is an academic discipline focused upon the intersection of race, law and power.

Although no set of canonical doctrines or methodologies defines CRT, the movement is loosely unified by two common areas of inquiry. First, CRT has analyzed the way in which racial hierarchies are reproduced over time, and in particular, the role that law plays in this process. Second, CRT work has investigated the possibility of transforming the relationship between law and racial power, and more broadly, the possibility of achieving racial emancipation and anti-subordination.

Appearing in US law schools in the mid- to late 1980s, Critical Race Theory began as a reaction to Critical Legal Studies,[2]. Scholars like Derrick Bell applauded the focus of civil rights scholarship on race, but were deeply critical of civil rights scholars' commitment to colorblindness and their focus on intentional discrimination, rather than a broader focus on the conditions of racial inequality.[3] Likewise, scholars like Patricia Williams, KimberlƩ Williams Crenshaw and Mari Matsuda embraced the focus on the reproduction of hierarchy in Critical Legal Studies, but criticized CLS scholars for failing to focus on racial domination and on the particular sources of racial oppression.[4]

Richard Delgado and Jean Stefancic have documented the following major themes as characteristic of work in critical race theory:

* A critique of liberalism: CRT scholars favor a more aggressive approach to social transformation as opposed to liberalism's more cautious approach, favor a race conscious approach to transformation rather than liberalism's embrace of color blindness, and favor an approach that relies more on political organizing, in contrast to liberalism's reliance on rights-based remedies.
* Storytelling/counterstorytelling and "naming one's own reality"--using narrative to illuminate and explore experiences of racial oppression.
* Revisionist interpretations of American civil rights law and progress—criticizing civil rights scholarship and anti-discrimination law.
* Applying insights from social science writing on race and racism to legal problems.
* Structural determinism, or how "the structure of legal thought or culture influences its content."
* The intersections of race, sex, and class--e.g., how poor Latinas' experience of domestic violence needs distinctive remedies.
* Essentialism and anti-essentialism—reducing the experience of a category (like gender or race) to the experience of one sub-group (like white women or African-Americans).
* Cultural nationalism/separatism, Black nationalism--exploring more radical views arguing for separation and reparations as a form of foreign aid.
* Legal institutions, critical pedagogy, and minority lawyers in the bar.

I need some more explanation about this before I understand why this matters to me.

I saw that they released the video. I didn't watch it because it was "Watch Obama talk about race when he was in law school." When I was in law school I got drunk and fell asleep in my car (which obviously means I'm an alcoholic and dangerous driver and shouldn't be president). When I was in law school I took a shit in the upper deck in the law school bathroom (which makes me a vandal and criminal and shouldn't be president). When Barack Obama was in law school he had a professor he liked who supported some race theory that is virtually irrelevant (which means he hates white people and wants to kill us all and shouldn't be president). I think he also smoked pot too (which means he's a criminal, drug addict, and dealer and shouldn't be president).

Whats your point in all of this?

Obama has been involved in a racially orientated area of Academic Law, pro-Obama highlight good parts of said Academia, anti-Obama highlight bad parts of Academia...

The story/point is where now?

Glad we agree on something. He shouldn't be President.

I wondered what the point was when I heard this on the radio. I think the point is that he can't so easily alienate himself from Jeremiah Wright and all of the things he has been ducking. I mean it's one thing to try and say not guilty by association for one bad friend or whatever. But when it is a pattern of bad associations it is harder to refute. I don't think this will change anyone's opinion though. Those who knew what he was like either care or don't care. Those who don't care still won't care. See posts above.

I would think the fact the Derrick Bell admitted he was hiding this video during the 2008 campaign from the American people would be enough proof that there is damning information on Obama.

I personally think Obama is exactly what you get when your popular media contains people like Brietbart and, um, Andrew Cooper? (he popped up when I googled "Who Is The Left Equivalent Of Andrew Breitbart" lol).

Media and political bias, hype and demagogy has resulted in a political landscape that has little or no bearing on policy.

Can you explain more about this. How is Obama exactly what we get from people like Breitbart and whatever. I had never heard of Breitbart before his death?

Are you saying that Obama was put into office by the media? I am not agreeing or disagreeing just trying to find out exactly what you mean by that statement. Sometimes my skull is too thick or too full.

Im saying that the kind of candidates who will win elections are not the kind of people who will be good at managing states or countries, they are people who are good at navigating the media and political landscape.

And yes hiding the truth, but not hiding the truth from your average american, your average american prob doesnt care (assuming they can see the forest for the trees so to speak). It's hiding it from idiotic media hypers who dont care about stories, let alone policy debate, but care only about selling advertising.

Wake me up when something meaningful is released.

I agree in that I thought there would be more, and there are more tapes still to come, but this is still interesting to me and I have since began to identify what it is that makes progressives so different from honest and respectable liberals.

Barrack was 30 years old at the time of the speech (much older than the average law student). He was the chosen introductory speaker for a very racist instructor. He soon after attended a hate whitey church for the next 20 years. I don't think that your sophomoric actions when you were younger correlate as much as you'd like to think they do.

The truth is... we currently have a well educated and very intelligent President.

The public didn't mind when a candidate had a history of drinking, snorting coke and partying before discovering there was a large block of evangelical conservative voters and finding religion while squandering investors money mostly from the the middle east while going bankrupt in west Texas. It was obviously good experience for understanding the backbone of the nation's problems and a decent foundation for entering politics.

Even though the OP is entirely too vague and lacking factual details of any kind, is this a problem because --even though it's decades old-- it's more recent than a Hawaiian birth certificate? I suppose it's better than Breitbart's videos of his scatological rants while confronting "occupiers" or images of Wiener's weiner.

The man has been president for almost 4 years. I have not yet had the gestapo burst through my door arresting me for being white.

So, again, I ask you and Phatscotty - how is this video or any reports relative to this video relevant?

By the way I found an alternate explanation of critical race theory, and this one came off of a website that can't altered by the general public.

Did anything I write lead you to believe that I was explicitly stating storm troopers would raid your house?

Just because Obama has engaged in hateful activities does not mean that he can't or will not exercise a certain amount of pragmatism. I think you'll find that his radical beliefs will manifest in more subtle ways; such as when he accused the white cop of wrong doing against the black Harvard professor without even knowing the details of the incident.

Frankly, Obama has all types of flags (just like this)in his past. They have been covered up very overtly by public institutions and the media. They have been written off by his supporters that want to pretend that his past has no correlation with the present. And furthermore, anybody that connects the dots is written off as a lunatic, ideologue, conspiracy theorist, etc.

I was exagerrating. Again, I'm wondering at the practical implications of what President Obama has done in his life and whether those practical implications will affect me in any way. Similar to Presidents Bush II and Clinton, whether the person snorted cocaine or diddled an intern while in office did not affect me in any meaningful way. Therefore, those activities were irrelevant.

So again, I ask you - why should I care about this? Why and how should this affect whether I vote for President Obama (ignoring all other factors)?

That still doesn't answer my question other than that you believe that something someone did 20 years ago will affect that person's job now such that it's sufficient for you to not vote for that person and, further, spend time, energy, and resources making sure it affects other peoples' perceptions of him.

I would prefer that conservative pundits and politicians spend time trying to figure out how to make better policy decisions rather than spending time determining how racist Barack Obama was and/or is (when clearly it has not affected his policy to date).

His racism should not be discounted. But you'll notice that I think that the narrative is generally much more about his economic performance than associations and hidden beliefs where one has to extrapolate based on some speculation.

I did give you the very tangible example of the white cop / black Harvard professor. That was the first example that comes to mind. I thought that example was very black and white (pun not intended). I have my own personal conspiracy theories based on his background, actions and past subscriptions to various doctrines. I don't want to preach my own perception as an absolute gospel though.

I say this to point out that we all extrapolate much of what we surmise based on intuition and of course there is always going to be a margin for error (that'll be different for each person) in that event. None the less, if you merely just give someone the benefit of the doubt then you are essentially operating based on blind faith.
