GB Olympic Football Team?

Postby flashleg8 on Tue Oct 30, 2007 5:02 am

The British Olympic Association says it will field a Great Britain football team in both the men's and women's competitions when the Olympic Games are hosted in London in 2012. The Scottish and the Welsh FA's are opposed and have expressly forbid any Scottish or Welsh player to enter. The English FA are keen and the Northern Irish FA say they agree also.

What do you say?

This could be a good opportunity to ask a question I've had for a while.

Great Britain, Britain, United Kingdom

What is the difference? Is there one?

From what I know, (and I'm probably wrong) is that UK is made up of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland? (something about Ireland not in it?)

Either way.. can someone clear it up?

Well the best (and by that I mean most confusing!) way to explain it is probably Stopper's (in)famous venn diagram...

Stoppers diagram is awesome. It really should be in text books or something.

As to the thread, I agree with it. FIFA have told Wales, Scotland and NI that their autonomy in UEFA and FIFA will be protected even if they decide to join the GB Olympic team. Why should GB not have a football team representing them at the olympics. Its the countries most popular sport so we should have representatives at the foremost sporting event in the world.

I've always liked the idea and think it would be great.

what about Healy. i for one would cheer on a British team as thats what i call myself(not English(even though born there) and not Scottish).

as long as FIFA and UEFA(what Titanic has already said) is ok with the countries still being individual when it comes to the World cup and European championships.

I think it's a good idea.
If you stick to that idea maybe in the next EURO qualifications you would be more of a challenge...

Lets face it if it was a GB team it would really be the Scots team picked at the moment anyway....

But seriously, I really oppose this idea. It would open up a creeping precedent to abolish the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish FA's and thus our voting and competition rights. The rest of UEFA for some time have wanted to get rid of this anomaly and this would just open the gates for their complaints. I know we've had assurances from Sepp Blatter about this - but he's hardly a man to be trusted.

SCOTLAND SAYS NO!
