Britain Embraces Kindergarten Sex Ed

Postby Juan_Bottom on Fri Oct 24, 2008 10:38 am

LONDON (Oct. 23) - It's a controversial idea in a land known for prudishness about sex — teaching kids as young as 5 about the birds and bees.
But with one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in Europe, the British government is bringing sex education to all schools in England — including kindergartens

wow. I'll agree with starting it earlier and I knew the trend would head that way but kindergarten? Really?

Hey! They could make that a movie, starring none other than DM's favorite!

Last year there was a story in the papers here - a 7 year old girl got pregnant. It's a real problem. The father was only 5. We need this in our primary schools.

To be picky - at 5 kids in the UK are in full-time school, not kindergarden (or "pre-school") - and if you actually read the story it gives you a fairly good idea of what will be taught at that age.

I am reminded of an incident when the curlson was about three, and had obviously noticed that some people have willies and some don't. In an attempt to clarify this, he asked his grandma "Do you have a willy?"
She misheard and thought he was asking about "wellies" ("wellington boots", galoshes).
"Yes," she said, "Out in the garden shed."

It took some time to sort that one out.

That is simultaneously both the best and worst suggestion for a porn spin-off ever.

Much ado about nothing, really. This is basically just teaching about respect for bodies. If its combined with some basic privacy stuff, then it is very much a good thing!

I grew up on a dairy farm. I knew long before school that we had to check for a cow riding another (a sign the one needs to be bred.. important on a dairy), had watched calves being born, had even "helped" pull a few. I even knew that babies came from bellies, but I was clueless about the rest until we learned it in school.

We don't have "kindergarten", which does somewhat demean in the informedness of your news source.

However, it does seem to be very much a storm in the form of horrible british weather brewing inside a thoroughly british teacup about proposals that will likely be nothing more than telling kids "when a man and a woman love each other very much and want to have a kid they hug in a special way". That's hardly earth-shatteringly controversial, despite the guilt-ridden consciences of the naysayers who believe that it means we're going to be broadcasting hardcore porn to poor innocent 6 y.o.s.

A US reporter was looking at the story, which mentions "Key Stage 1", for 5 and up. IN the US they would still be in kindergarden at that point. I think we can excuse a little laziness in reporting.
The UK does have pre-schools, and all kids have rthe right to go from 3 or so, maybe earlier - they were moving the age back repeatedly when I was last involved.

well in Scotland you join school at the age of 5, here in Salford(and most of England i think), you can start nursery at the age of 3. me myself(being born in August) was only just 3 when starting nursery back in September 73'.

in quite a lot of European countries they are already prepring kids for sex education and in N. Ireland and Wales, they teach it already. so it is not like it is an extreme expriment.
